Kelly DeMarco is out of Marcus Chapman’s league. When they met in high school he was besotted with the blue-eyed goddess, but she never gave him the time of day.
High school is now over and the tide is turning.
Five years later, Kelly is job-hunting and the best she can find happens to be Marcus Chapman’s personal assistant. He is thrilled by this second chance and determined to win the beauty’s affections, but Kelly has no intention of falling for the “class clown.”
What you’re looking for can be hiding right in front of you.
In spite of her resolve, Marcus’s playful charm begins to chip away at Kelly’s protective veneer, and she starts to realize that tall, dark, and mysterious isn’t a requirement, and sometimes Mr. I Don’t Think So can actually be Mr. Perfect.
Will Kelly’s obsession with keeping up appearances push Marcus away, or will he have enough drawing power to convince his favorite girl that honest love can outclass anything?

Marcus Chapman has been in love with Kelly DeMarco since their school days. So imagine his surprise when her resume shows up on his desk, especially since she comes from money and doesn't need to work.
Kelly didn't expect to be sitting at Torrence Records, completing a job interview. Her friend, Isla, was the one who sent in the application under Kelly's account. When she gets the job, she decides to go along with it. Besides, it will get her out of the house where she has been moping over her ex-boyfriend, Fletcher, for months.
Kelly almost changes her mind when she discovers her boss is the Marcus Chapman from high school. She knows that he will ask her out and when he does, she blows him off and tells him she doesn't want to date anyone at work. However, when Bryce, another manager, asks her out she automatically accepts, much to Marcus' disappointment. He knows Bryce's reputation and he makes a bet with Kelly: If Bryce sleeps with her and then dumps her, which he is known for, then she owes him one date. After that, if she doesn't want another date, he will leave her alone.
It did take me a while to get into this book. I think it was because I was wishing I had read the other books first. That does not mean it can't be read as a standalone because it certainly can. It would just be better for me had I read the previous books.
Looking through Marcus' eyes, it was kind of sad to see him pining after a girl who was out of his league and who had rejected him for so long. His character was sweet and funny, definitely my favorite. I loved the way he burrowed under Kelly's skin, making her take a closer look at her life and they types of guys she goes for.
Everything was so laid back with Marcus. One of my favorite scenes was the first date. He was all about seeing the real Kelly and not the designer store heiress she has to be around everyone else.
Troublemaker was a fun read and you will find quite a few good songs throughout the book. I recommend this to fans of New Adult and anyone who likes an underdog story.
Thanks to Melissa Pearl for providing me with this ARC
I received an ARC of this book from the author for my honest review!!
I was totally unsure of this book for the first little bit...technically I'm not sure how much of the book, b/c I read it while waiting at the airport....which I guess means I was totally sucked into the story, b/c I finished it in honestly just a few hours. I was totally sucked in by sweet Marcus, but I couldn't always understand his infatuation with Kelly. I was NOT sold on her until later on in the book, and I'm not sure if I ever was 100% sold on her. I'm not saying she's not an interesting character, and doesn't have her own sympathetic plights, but I guess I just loved Marcus so much that she never seemed good enough for him, you know?
So after all that, how did I still come up with 4 stars?? Well, a lot of that was with Marcus. While his judgment sometimes came under question, he just never failed to make me smile (and occasionally cringe) at his antics and just fantastic outlook in life. Reading about his history and infatuation with Kelly really was cringeworthy, but I liked the man he became. It was nice to read about a guy who's a little bit dorky and unsure of himself, and not the usual 100% unattainable hunk. And I guess in the end, despite my reservations about certain parts of the story (the steam scenes were up and down for me, parts great, parts meh), the good parts just outshone the rest. I guess part of me is still waffling about making it a 3.5 stars, but I just had such a big smile on my face for good parts of it that I say screw it! It's my review, I'll do what I want! :P
I still need to go back and reread books 2-4 of this series, but I enjoyed getting a little bit of Chaos cameo in there, and catching a glimpse of Jimmy (and hearing about Nessa). And let me tell you, if you're a fan of Chaos, there was some fantastic news at the end of the book about that...
Ms. Pearl just knows how to write an easy to read story with likable characters. And if you've ever been a fan of the underdog guy, then this is truly the story for you. I even liked that he was a little bit on the shorter side, b/c I married me a shortie and they are underrated.
"Music could get me through anything. I couldn't necessarily sing in tune, but I could mouth the shit out any song on the planet. I wasn't a bad dancer either."
Troublemaker is the 6th book in the Song Bird series, but can totally be read as a stand-alone. Troublemaker follows the story of Marcus and Kelly. Marcus has had an embarrassing crush on Kelly since high-school. But, Kelly has never seen him as more than a dorky looser. Kelly had no way of knowing that one day, her snotty ways would catch up to her. You see, it's been 5 years since high-school and Kelly is seeking a job of her own; one that has nothing to do with her family's legacy. The only catch; Marcus would be Kelly's new boss. Despite their past, Kelly decides to take the job and hopes that the two of them can remain professional.....Marcus has come a long way since high-school and it seems almost as fate has finally given him the chance that he's always wanted. However, Kelly has some tough walls that have to be broken. Marcus has to somehow show that he's not the guy that he was in high-school and that he deserves a chance. Will Marcus finally get the chance he's always wanted? Will his dream girl be worth all those years of pinning?
Overall, I found this book to be a quick and enjoyable read. The characters were frustrating and entertaining at the same time. I will be first to admit that I really didn't like Kelly. It took me a while to warm up to her. I didn't like how snotty she was towards Marcus and for the life of me, couldn't see what Marcus saw in her. That being said, she did eventually grow on me and I found myself rooting for her to give Marcus a chance. And once she did let her guard down, what she saw in Marcus was what she least expected!
Troublemaker is fun read, told from dual points of view. You can easily read it in one sitting. It has lots of funny moments and sweet romance. It has some drama, but not too much. I liked the message behind the story; to not let your past dictate your future, that people can change, that some people deserve the chance to prove that they are worth it.
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review8
*3.5 Stars* The Songbird Series is one of my favorites because it's comfortable. The writing is always easy to read, the characters feel familiar and are engaging, and the music element gives the stories that little something extra that makes them that much more enjoyable. Troublemaker is a great addition to the series with a couple I was rooting for and an excellent soundtrack!
Marcus is a manager at Torrence Records. He's an affable guy, loyal, honest, and hard-working. I loved his goofy grin, his determination to make people smile and laugh, and his kinda nerdy personality. (In other words, kinda like my hubby. ;) Things are going well for him and then his high school crush turns up to interview for a job as his personal assistant.
Kelly is something else. As the heir to a fashion company, she was raised in a cold home with certain expectations placed on her. Basically, she's always felt like an ornament. She does let a few close friends see the real Kelly, but she hasn't introduced them to her world. And Marcus is *not* her type. Too bad she'll be working for him and he's determined to change her mind.
Marcus was a sweetheart! I liked that Ms. Pearl had the story be about a guy who's been in love forever with the unattainable girl. I had a hard time connecting with Kelly because of her haughtiness. She's so entrenched in social status, seeing people according to where they fall in social circles, how they look, how they dress. It rubbed me wrong, especially considering the expectations her parents placed on her were chafing her. It took a really long time for her to grow a backbone and to realize what she could have with Marcus. Because Marcus - he always saw the real Kelly underneath all her window-dressing. It's a good thing Troublemaker is told using dual POV so that I could connect with Marcus - and see Kelly through his eyes. I did eventually warm up to her though and I was fist pumping when she finally stood up for herself against her parents, and fought for Marcus.
I have to mention how much I loved Ms. Pearl's use of music in the story - not only in Marcus' job but as an important element in both Marcus' and Kelly's lives. They use it to communicate - and it added this layer of fun to their story. Now Ms. Pearl has me anxious for the next couple's story - and I get the pleasure of going back for a few I missed in between.

Kelly comes from a very prestigious family and can't seem to escape her famous last name no matter where she goes or who she sees. Kelly always does what her family tells her to especially when it comes to her controlling mother because she knows she can't make any waves or else suffer her wrath. This makes it extremely hard to know who is really Kelly's friends and what guy really sees her for her.
Marcus has grown into a sharp dressed, handsome guy who works as a band manager for a big-time record company now long gone are the days of him being a dorky loser following his crush Kelly around trying anything to get her attention. Marcus never seemed to be on her radar unless she was trying to keep her distance. Kelly had zero interest in the class clown and besides she knew he'd never fit into her world.
Come Today, years later Kelly walks into Marcus's life looking for a job as an assistant not knowing it's him who'll turn into her boss. Gone is the dork, love struck class clown and now stands a charming, cute, well dressed guy in a high position job. Kelly resists at first to accept the job because she fears he'll resort to the old Marcus and start making plays for her yet again. She isn't keen on having to relive that nor having to reject him again. Kelly knows it would make work that much more awkward but Marcus vows he's changed and can keep a professional work environment with her if that's what she wants.
Little by little Marcus and his sweetness creeps into Kelly's heart and before she knows it she is seeking him out and wanting his strong arms around her, yearning for his kisses all over her body making her crazy and want more. All is never easy nor runs smoothly... Kelly's life is complicated!
Who will Kelly choose Family or Marcus?!? Can these two make a relationship work?!? Will LOVE blossom between Marcus and Kelly after all is said and done?!?
Marcus is a band manager with Torrence Records. Kelly is set to inherit Fashion Empire. Marcus has loved Kelly DeMarco since the moment he laid eyes on her in high school. Kelly ignored him and was mean to him but Marcus loved her anyway.
Kelly wants real world experience, she wants to do her own thing, find her own boyfriend and she does not care about the FAMILY BUSINESS.
Kelly gets a job working for Marcus and at first does not realize it is the same NERDY Marcus from high school. But they have both changed and Marcus is charming and cute now. But he still is very much in love with Kelly.
Determined to make Kelly smile and laugh Marcus takes things at a good pace until he can get Kelly to take a chance, trust him and open her heart and mind to new possibilities.
Kelly is afraid and needs to trust Marcus and these new feelings she is feeling when they are together.
Kelly has to choose between life of a wealthy, bored, marrying for the good of the family girl or a life of smiles, happiness, laughter, safety, and love.
Loved this story and the fight that Kelly has internally from the beginning to the end. Growing up in a certain society and trying to fit into that lifestyle when you never feel like you ever have. I loved it.
The Underdog gets his girl and a rich girl gets her life as her own~ I love anything having to do with music so this series is fantastic. I have only read Fever and now Troublemaker but I plan to read the rest. I need to write a review for Fever because I absolutely loved it!! Melissa is fantastic for linking a song playlist with her books. It helps to get in the story and feel like you are truly there. I completely understood where this girl was coming from. She didn't love her life but didn't know how or if she could change it. The hero had "love at first sight" but couldn't reach her before high school ended. Years later he has the job, the body, and life he wanted except that girl. Fortune is in his lap because his co-worker wants another assistant and he gets to interview the one who sends a picture. Crazy friends of the girl applied for the job on her behalf putting the picture in her file. Life works in mysterious ways. Read the book and the rest in the series to find out more.
The thing I like about Melissa Pearl's books are they are a good escape. This book is an easy read and very enjoyable. I received an ARC for my honest review.
It is more than just a contemporary romance novel. It touches on issues that everyone deals with, such as pleasing your parents and people judging each other.
I felt myself rooting for Marcus as the nice guy, and how nice guys finish last. It reminds me of how much emphasis is placed on appearance instead of what a person is truly made of. The old lesson of sometimes a pretty package contains unattractive things comes to mind.
I highly recommend this book for a quick getaway from life. It would be a perfect beach read. I also loved the reference to songs (both past and present) throughout the book.
* I received this book in an exchange for an honest review.
A fun and sweet read with the opposite clichèness of a plotline. This story is definitely refreshing. It is about the main guy - our hero chasing after the girl rather than the girl chasing after the guy. I simply love it!
I love how goofy Marcus is. I love everything about him. He is seriously dreamy and so sweet. He makes it his main goal to make his one true love, Kelly constantly happy. And Kelly, the cold, and perfect wealthy daughter on the surface that you always see is the usual trait of the guy in any other book.
I think the author or the story wants us to get the message that not only hot, tall, handsome and wealthy can make us happy for the rest of our lives, but also the opposite.
I felt sorry for Marcus for being so obsessed with a girl that always treated him rudely. When Kelly got hired to be his assistant at Torrence Records, she was determined to keep things professional between them. Even though she secretly thought that he was funny, she knew that he would not fit into her wealthy family's lifestyle. Therefore, she didn't want to give him a chance.
This story shows that everything isn't always as it seems. Everyone deals with issues in their private lives that affects the way that they view the world and treat others. Ultimately, we should do what makes us happy without worrying about what everyone else thinks.
**I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.**
Really enjoying Songbird Series and how the stories and lives of the characters weave together. You can read it as a stand alone but reading them in order you see more than if you read them alone.
I loved how Marcus never gave up on loving Kelly despite her misgivings about them being together and how people show themselves to the world isn't always who they really are. That the right person for you isn't always the one you imagine
I just LOVE this series ♡ With every new book Melissa Pearl makes me fall in love with her characters all over again. I did not know what to expect other then Marcus being the band manager and it took me totally by surprise how my heart melted for him. He is more your boy next door than the broken hero and I love love love how he sees the real Kelly.
„She's got this magical smile that hardly anyone has seen (…) it's a thing of absolute beauty.“ „I'd choose you every time. You're the only girl I've ever wanted.“
Marcus and Kelly have a little high school history and even though I sometimes wanted to scream at Kelly to just open her heart and let Marcus in, I did understand the struggles that held her back. And as much as my heart broke for Marcus, it hurt for Kelly too and I couldn't really be mad at her. This is what I love so much about this series– the emotions and feeling like being part of the book and Melissa Pearl's writing style, her words and pace just make the pages flow by. And I love that she has playlists for her books you can listen to on spotify while reading.
Because of all the trouble Kelly puts him through and Marcus never giving up on her but although don't taking her bullshit or selling himself short, Marcus is definitely one of my fav bookboyfriends 2016 ♡
I have enjoyed everyone of the Songbird novel and so far, I'd say Marcus is totally one of my favorite songbird hero. He's just so sweet and thoughtful and the way he loves... he's very ideal. Though physically speaking, his looks might not be very ideal. Actually, I think the reason why I liked him the most was because of this. He's not your usual, tall, dark and handsome kinda guy. In fact, I'd say with the way Kelly treated him, he's pretty much ordinary looking. But whatever her lacked in his physical looks, he definitely made it up with his personality.
Kelly on the other hand, I find her personality was not very much justified. I find her very shallow with her choice of men although it could be attributed to the fact that she's used to acting in the way other people expected her too. I was just hoping that her reasons for some of her actions were given better light. Like that scene at the pool for example. She said there's reason why she did it but it wasn't showed very well.
But it was nice how she made up for all of it in the way she came to her senses with her parents and stood up for her feelings for Marcus.
All in all, I still really enjoyed the story. And the songs! I loved all the songs and how it was played into the story.
This is Marcus' story and tells how he has been in love with Kelly since High School. To be honest, I couldn't understand the whys and wherefores of Marcus' love for her, as she seemed to be a real snippety madam to me. However, the joy of Melissa Pearl's writing is when she takes a character and turns them around, and you end up cheering them on. This is what happened to me with Kelly.
This is a quick, fun, and also introspective book. Kelly has to figure out if she is prepared to act for who she is and work for what she wants, or if she is going to be an empty figurehead. This is not as easy as it sounds, and she definitely has her work cut out for her.
With characters that are both lovely and others that are instantly dislikeable, this story is fast-paced and smooth. Well written, with no grammatical or editing errors that I found, this was a delight to read and a wonderful addition to the Songbird series. Definitely recommended.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *
Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Jan 31, 2016
Marcus & Kelly's book Troublemaker is book number six in the Songbird series but it can be read as a stand-alone. I absolutely love this series and this book was a lovely addition to it. I really do love books that involve music in it one way or another- it's makes it all that much more enjoyable. Jelly becomes Marcus' assistant and I have to say I really do love it when this happens. This is one of those NA series I highly recommend. It's so enjoyable to read and it works as an amazing book to escape into. If you guys haven't started this series, I would definitely recommend it.
A review copy of this book was provided to Reads By Rose in exchange for an honest review. My reviews will always remain unbiased, truthful and respectful.
Love at first sight isn't always made of fairytale goodness! Sometimes it takes time and maybe second chances to truly get what you want! Marcus has grown up has an amazing job as a manager for rock stars! He's not the dweeb he was in high school so when Kelly his high school crush wants a job in his office he jumps at a second chance to woo her! But can they over look that fact that they are still so different, that they still come from two different worlds; can love be enough to surpass all the oppositions in front of them?! Melissa Pearl writes amazing beautiful books her songbird series is wonderful!! I love traveling thru each book and seeing familiar characters lives unfold!
Troublemaker was a really fluffy read. The characters were well written and I often found myself smiling at how sweet everything was. It was a predictable but comfortable read. One of the highlights of the story was Marcus. He was really unlike most male leads out there. He's a genuinely nice guy but what made him really standout was his humor! He was goofy and sweet and pretty much perfect. If you are looking for a light hearted escape and a new book boyfriend who is sure to make you crack a smile, Troublemaker is perfect for you!
This is the first book in the Songbird series that I read and I loved it! I loved this story, especially Marcus, he's a guy so sweet, funny and lovely, he goes all out to cheer people around him, sometimes forgetting his own happiness. Kelly is really a troublemaker, and in some parts I came to hate her for everything she did Marcus suffer, but at the same time, her life was not easy, always having to keep up appearances for the sake of her parents. A very well written story! With fun and some sad, but beautiful parts.
I liked the book and finished it in a day. The story is cute, well no Marcus is cute and sweet and I loved his growth. And I liked his family as well who are supportive and fun. And Kelly, I liked and disliked her depending upon how she treated Marcus :P Kelly is Marcus's high school crush and have been enamored by her but she don't return his feelings and mostly try to avoid him. Which is quite hard as he is persistent lol. But the story is after college life. And Kelly makes an entrance as Marcus's assistant. Well you could imagine what happens if not check out the book, it's a fun read.
I couldn't put this book down! I loved Marcus, his sweetness, goofiness, his strong and determined side. Kelly was hard to like, and hard not to like. I couldn't help but want to convince her she was stronger than she thought she was. I really enjoyed reading their story, and watching as they each found out more about themselves. This story was sweet, sexy, honest. and kept me wrapped up every last step of each of their journeys.
This is the first book I have read from Author Melissa Pearl and it won't be my last!
There were times in this story when I felt really bad for Marcus. Kelly could be pretty mean at times. But, there is a reason for this. This was a really good book and when you put it all together , it makes perfect sense.
Awesome plot too.
****I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.****
Even though it took me ages to read this due to school work and exhaustion I really enjoyed it. I'm definitely a sucker for these kind of love stories, and Kelly's story was such a fun journey to follow. Not to speak of what a teddy bear Marcus is, I just wanted to hug him. This was definitely an enjoyable read if you like stuff from the YA/NA genre and are up for a really cute love story.
When Kelly met Marcus in high school he fell in love with her but shI wouldn't give him the time of day. After 5 years Kelly is looking for a job and she so happens to land one as Marcus's Assistant. Kelly has no intention of liking him but will Marcus change her mind?
I received a copy of the book for my honest review. I absolutely loved this book. It was amazing
This is a great continuation to the songbird series but can be read as a standalone without any confusion. Very sweet romance about second chances. Geeky Marcus has a second chance at landing his dream girl once he's grown up and started his career. Melissa's writing makes it very easy for you to fall in love with the characters.
Story Line: 4 stars out of 5. This book was such an entertaining read for me. I love, love stories. They make me feel light. It also makes me jealous sometimes. The characters get to find someone that is perfect for them. It makes me want that. I was jealous of the main female character in this story. She found someone perfect for her.
Marcus is the band manager for Chaos. (The band from the last novel, True Love. Didn't write a review for that one.) He now had to deal with two new gigs on top of Chaos. His one client was easygoing and his other client was a brat. His assistant, Marcia, also told him that they had someone new applying to the company. He was floored when it was his old crush from high school, Kelly Demarco.
Marcus and Kelly live in two completely different worlds. She is a stuck up rich girl. Marcus is an easygoing guy who isn't as rich. Still Marcus, had a huge crush on Kelly. He didn't care that they were from two different worlds. Throughout the book he wanted to get to know the real Kelly. He wanted to see her happy. He saw the pain in her eyes when she first started working at Torrence Records.
Kelly, on the other hand, wanted to keep her walls up. She didn't want to Marcus to get to know her. He also wasn't her type of man. She loved tall, dark, and mysterious. Kelly also had a painful experience in college that caused her to become the way she was. Plus her mother and father were not a good example for her. Her parents had a loveless marriage. Since they owned a fashion empire they had a lot of appearances to keep up. Kelly's mother basically turned her into an ice queen. Kelly honestly didn't have a lot of confidence in herself. Still, Marcus, did not give up on her. He kept asking her on dates until she couldn't refuse.
When she finally let him in she found herself falling in love with someone that wasn't her type. Eventually she opened her heart and in the end they had the best romance. A lot of the moments in this book were really cute. Some of them were really frustrating. I had to shout at the book a lot because of some of the decisions made in the book.
Characters: 3.5 stars out of 5.
Marcus- I really adored him. He was super quirky. I loved that he sent morning songs to his coworkers to get them going. I loved the choices that he made throughout the book. I felt my heartbreak when his did. I was happy when he was happy. I connected with him more than I did with his counterpart. At some moments, he reminded me of myself especially because he was a geek back in high school. I think I was pretty geeky at times myself. I loved reading his point of view. He was the best character in the book.
Kelly- She annoyed me through most of the book. It's mostly because of her parents and her upbringing. She made so many stupid decisions in this book. I wanted to go into the book and throw the book at her. I wanted her to see how she was acting. I felt she was a spoiled brat. Yes, it was because her mother shaped her that way. Her mother basically wanted to control her. She let her mother control her through most of the book. She grew on me in the end when she finally started making the right choices. I also love that she stood up to her mother finally!
Caris- She was the worst character in the book to be honest. She was worse than Kelly. She gets a special mention because she was one of Marcus' clients. She felt like she could do anything that she wanted. I wanted to slap her in the head. Her mother gave her everything she wanted. She was just as spoiled as Kelly. She tried to get her way all the time. I'm glad about her fate in the end of the book though. She eventually got herself dropped from the label.
Favorite quotes: "You are petrified of falling in love. Now, you might not be ready to tell my why, but I want to prove to you that love doesn't have to be treacherous. Love is supposed to make you happy, make you smile and laugh...make you feel safe."
"No, I'm saying that because you are an amazing man, and I don't want anyone to ever make you feel otherwise. You are a catch, Marcus Chapman, and you deserve a girl who wants to claim you as her own and let the whole world know about it."
"You stop worrying about what everyone else thinks and listen to your heart. It gives you the freedom to go after the things that really matter to you."
Writing style: 5 stars out of 5. I love Melissa Pearl's writing style so much. Her books keep me engaged. I can't wait to read the next story in this series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
6.) Troublemaker (Marcus and Kelly): "What you're looking for can be hiding right in front of you." - Cover
"I know I'm not the suave, sophisicated guy you're used to, but I do a thing or two about women. For instance, I know they need to be treated with respect, and respect without honesty is worthless. So yeah, I am going to call you on your bullshit. You are afraid. You're petrified of falling in love. Now, you might not be ready to tell me why, but I want to prove to you that love doesn't have to be treacherous. Love is supposed to make you happy, make you smile and laugh...make you feel safe."
"I have something really important that I need to tell this man and it can't wait, because he does need me. You need me...just as much as I need you. And I'm sorry I wasn't willing to fight for us. I was afraid. I couldn't fit you into my world. All I could see was one obstacle after another, so I gave up. But I realized today that it doesn't matter whether you fit or not, because I want you by my side. You make everything better. Being with you makes me so happy. I love you, Marcus. I love you, and I'll tell anyone you want me to because I am all in."
This is another great book in the Songbird series, I feel like I keep saying that but it's completely true. Once again Melissa Pearl has give her readers more lovable characters to root for and of course fall in love with. By the end of this novel you'll be happy and excited feeling all the emotions of love can happen for the underdog so never give up.
Becoming the manager of the newest hit band "Chaos" is a huge career step for Marcus Chapman, he has new responsibilities and is ready to take on his job full force. Marcus is establishing himself and is now a man who is far cry from the stumbling nerd he was in high school. The only thing Marcus lacks in life is that special girl, because for him there was only one girl that had ever been it for him despite her constant rejections. So when she comes into his office one day for an interview, its Marcus realizes now is the time for him to have the power over her and try to win her over. Kelly DeMarco wants change and believes she will find it by working outside of her parent's clothing empire. But when Kelly realizes she'll be working for the clown of a boy from high school who followed her around incessantly she wonders if the job worth it. Marcus has a lot to prove to Kelly, one of which is that he's worth her love, while Kelly discovers what love is, who she is and who her Mr. Right really is.
Overall, Love this next novel in the Songbird series! Marcus is that underdog you want to just jump up and down for. I loved how caring and persistent Marcus was, sure he seemed creepy in HS with his following Kelly around but he matured just fine. Kelly is relatable for anyone who is set adrift in life and looking to remake themselves. Her determination made Kelly someone to admire since she sought ways to improve herself outside of depending on her family's wealth. Now it's Marcus and Kelly's love story that will have you believing love will prevail, even against your ideals of the "perfect" someone. So if you are up for another great novel with romance as the guy tries to win over his dream girl with the help of songs and charm all the while she's trying to rebuild her life and figure who is Mr.right for her, then you'll love this book.

This is my first book in the Song Bird series and I liked it. I'm not a fan of love triangles which is why I kind of avoided the earlier books, but when the author offered this one as an ARC, I figured why not. I like other books from the author, I just wasn't in the mood to read another love triangle. This is not one of those, but I have to say, that by the time I finished this, I felt more sympathy for the plight of nice guys everywhere. Marcus was one of those nice guys who spent the tail end of his high school years in love with the most unattainable girl. He went out of his way to get her to take real notice of him. Sure, she knew who he was, and that was someone completely out of her league. Fast forward five years and Kelly re-enters Marcus' life. Hired as a personal assistant to him and another talent manager, he figures now is his chance to show her that he is and isn't the same guy. On the one hand, kudos for being persistent. On the other? The man puts himself through so much to get the girl. And she was just so damn shallow that I struggled to understand why any man would bare that much of his soul for someone who was stuck on looks and prestige. It wasn't until much further in the book that you realize how much influence her parents had on some of those decisions, but it wasn't all on them. She finally had to realize that she is her own person and that her choices are hers and hers alone.
Although to be fair, Marcus kind of brought it on himself too. Part of me wondered why someone would put themselves through all the rejection for someone they thought they knew. I really liked Marcus. At times he came across a little mushy, but very genuine. Kelly was interesting. I didn't like how she treated Marcus, but as the story progressed, I came to realize that she could definitely be worse than what she was and she definitely had her soft spots when it came to her friends.
Overall, a good story even if I think in reality, odds of this actually happening would be rare. It takes a lot for someone to bend as much as these two have (both in their own way).
