Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

An entertaining volume. Very little reading but a whole heap of action. Making this one of the quickest reads I have had in a long time. The only thing i am a bit dissatisfied with is the fight between Goku and his the happened between arc in the Cartoon series is left out. My favourite line from Vegeta is "You are not a bad person, but you are a terrible father." I think even Goku's biggest defenders would not be able to defend his parenting skills. A great action-packed volume and even a bit of Beerus in action.

--

EN The battle against God Zamas finally comes to an end — in a way as unexpected as it is spectacular, after reaching levels of power and development never seen before.

Now, Son Goku tries to convince the God of Everything to organize a tournament bringing together the greatest fighters from all universes, something that deeply displeases the God of Destruction, who soon finds himself caught in a true Battle Royale between all 12 Gods of Destruction.

This volume concludes the parallel world/time travel story arc and begins another tournament where the stakes are huger. I can't say I loved how it all ended especially when you're hoping that it would take a cleverer turn for the better. The upside is definitely some of the battle sequences that beautifully drawn and make it all worthwhile.

Where things are headed next aren't that exciting as it continues to drink, rinse and repeat more of the same but with new characters. I do hope that it will be the beginning of something interesting.

The end of one arc and the beginning of another. The Zamasu conclusion feels a little rushed, with a deus ex machina win which could have been done from the beginning. It wastes no time and immediately jumps into the next arc which promises a far more entertaining tournament with new faces and power levels.

The end of Goku Black!

So Vegeta and Goku face off with everything they have on Goku Black. Even Trunks helps to see if they can fight all together and beat Goku Black. In doing so Goku black makes one big move, and the heroes might be truly FUCKED. How will they win? Also, we got the Tournament of Power starting. All the heroes from different universes coming together to face off. The destroyer of universes all plan on getting rid of some universes who lose!

This was pretty fun. I actually liked that Goku and Vegeta had to win in a different way than usual. Also the power tournament is sounding fun and excited to see who will be joining this one. Trunks goodbye is both touching and well crafted. Actually this volume in general was solid all around and no real bad things. I'm excited to go to the next arc! A 4 out of 5.

The conclusion of the Zamasu arc and the start of the Tournament of Power, hyped for it, all these new deities being added to the Dragon Ball mythos are really fun to read, I like the way the universe is expanding and is pretty obvious that Goku will eventually become a God himself, onto the next volume.

Okay keeping up with most of the momentum of the previous volume, I absolutely loved the all out near impending doom aspect with zamasu, that being said (without spoiling anything, I think that was one of the cheapest overall copouts I’ve ever witnessed) I can’t say entirely for sure but I’d argue this has to be the shortest volume so far because just as curious tension riles back up in the final chapter, it’s over.

The conclusion to the cluster fuck on a time travel plot in Dragon Ball Z/Super in general

Is it better than the anime?
Yes it is

Toyotaro didn't just give us a good old DB fight but also definitive ending to future Trunks arc, He also bring back Akira Toriyama's strongest character...

...for half the chapter :/
description

Yeah we get what we get. But he did give us some epic Goku vs Zamasu solo fight that we didn't see on the anime and some stuff.

description

description

He also get rid of the Future Trunks SSJ RAGE bullshit and stick on the Classic SSJ 2.
description

Also "Look at that" Vegita moment
description
description

Also the ending here makes more sense just saying
description

description

That it, not much to say actually. Well not much to say in this because this is dragonball and this the reason why dragonball is popular because of its simplicity. But then if rather choose dragonballs plot compare to some(yes I said "some") YA I've read for the past couple of years that ends up becoming a best seller for some reason.
description

I choose dragon ball
[image error]

Why?
Maybe because its first introduction to anime. For many people, Dragon Ball shaped their childhood and introduced us to this kind of stuff. Epic fight, Power-ups and planet killing death lasers. Dragon Ball (if you dont dive on it that much). Is a anime without negativity and misconceptions, its just all about the story and the characters that gives a thrilling action and for me sometimes that enough(for me I guess).

Those stars are only for Zeno. And for some fight scenes, which continue to be a delight. But apart from this - there's nothing I liked about this volume.
Goku continues to be portrayed as a stupid oaf thinking only of fights. Chi-Chi is nowhere to be seen, ever. All the elements that made the original DB unique and heart-warming are completely gone. What's going on? Has Toriyama begun to secretly hate his own creation? Is this all a big middle finger pointed toward the readers? Or is it just an emotionless cash grab, the spirit of DB blithely exchanged for the avalanche of money from movies, anime, mini figures, card games, video games, all the rest of the gamut of franchise media?

I do like Zeno, though. Even though even he/they are later shown as ruthless children looking for something to end the boredom - where's the purity of heart in that? - they remain surprisingly cute.

With the revelation of the last Volume (that a Lord of Lords can't be fused for more than an hour unless they have be declared officially in that role), the battle continues, with Goku pushing harder and harder until Fused Zamas separates. When the separation finally occurs, Trunks is able to step in with his sword and separate them even further, ultimately killing Goku Black. But why can't our heroes stop Zamas? Goku has a solution: Lord Zeno. The childlike emperor of the whole cosmos is summoned to stop Zamas once and for all. One snag... this Zeno is the parallel universe one... more on that soon...
In the aftermath, everything is worked out and our heroes go back to their lives. Vegeta is getting in one last training session (Bulma is pregnant with their daughter) with Whis and Beerus, and not only masters Super Saiyan Blue (just like Goku did in the fight with Fused Zamas) but in a sparring match against Beerus, he's actually able to land a punch!
Goku also decides that he's ready for Lord Zeno to enact his Universe Tournament idea, so he gets Future Zeno and brings him to be friends with our Zeno. This puts Zeno in a good mood, and he approves the tournament... but first he wants an exhibition match between all the Universe's Gods of Destruction. We get to see all of them, but not too much. Can't wait to see how this battle goes at the beginning of Volume 6!
Recommend... though the story is feeling slightly repetitive. Hopefully this will resolve with another tournament...

They came close to death and failing so many times in this volume. I don’t know what it is about Goku but that guy has some amazing luck and amazing timing. Even when he screws up.
I’m a bit sad for Future Trunks and Future Mai who lost everything - but at least they’ll get to have a new life in a semi normal world.
The Gods of Everything are trouble. This Zen-Zen as Goku calls him especially. In the strangest way. I don’t know if I find his face innocent or creepy.

Future Trunks Saga

Easily my favorite arc in Super, had a few nice changes from the anime version. Like there were so many twists turns and reveals in this, quite a few of them caught me by surprise and a good one at that!

Zamasu I just loved him in this, straight his introduction he wasn't taking any nonsense, not even from the supreme kai. The fact that there were two of them in this and it was explained so much better, with one being from universe 7 and the other being from universe 10, it just made so much sense. Also that fusion wow, it looked sick, now we didn't get the roided purple version but this one brought so may sweet surprises with him, I loved it.

We didn't get to see much of Vegito in this but for what we did get was awesome. Have I got any criticism of this story? Well it would have been nice for Trunks and Mai to have interactions with someone else on their earth, yes it was nice seeing them together and getting fleshed out but we don't get a feel for what it's like being a human in that situation. I know a lot of people have a gripe with them being together being that she was full grown woman when Goku was when he was a kid but the way I see it is they revert back to a child in mind as well as body, she is just more aware of stuff like her feelings.

I also adored the fact that Trunks super saiyan 2 was as strong as Goku's super saiyan 3 and that he he to use god to get the upper hand. It just goes to show you, that you don't need all these pointless transformations, you could just perfect one until it is that strong. Saying that Goku using a perfected super saiyan blue was very cool, unlike the anime. Super saiyan blue is a beast in the manga yes it has a huge drain in stamina like 3 does but it's so much more powerful. I also like the call back to the universe 6 arc with Vegeta this time using god and blue, switching between the two to get the upper hand on black.

Now that I think of it the ending is kind of weird and rubs me the wrong way, Trunks decision doesn't really make that much sense, he could easily stayed with our main cast but instead he decides to go back to the past, it's a little weird. I get this arc was full of fan service moments but it would have been great to have it around for a bit longer, it's not like this series is actually doing anything with kid Trunks and Goten, like Gohan they've just been pushed to the side. Unlike Gohan I don't actually think of those two unless they're on screen to remind me that yes they are in fact still here.

My final thoughts, I absolutely loved it, it was a blast to read!

This was a great volume as we have the duo fighting what seems like an endless stream of Zamazu and how its happening is anyone guess but then comes Goku's ultimate plan in calling Zeno-sama and he does and saves the day and the ending felt abrupt there but then again good call and the arc with Zamazu was really good and fun and he turned out to be one of the better foes the Super warriors have faced and then Goku befriending Zeno-sama and meeting with him and the other gods of destruction regarding the TOURNAMENT OF POWER, the multiversal martial arts champion. It was epic and so well done and seems like the next arc will be good and Beerus fighting just wow! The art was spectacular and you could feel the tension too!

At risk of starting discourse, it's interesting that people act like Goku was suddenly a selfish, bad father in DBS when he wasn't in Z, because, like... he was. See that time he made his preteen fight an unnecessarily difficult world-threatening conflict for the sake of character building.

There is something wild about him baldly stating "I don't know when my children were born" in this issue, though. WOOF.

That aside ZAMASU MY BELOVED RIP KING GONE TOO SOON--

I decided to jump back into Super... and this volume is where I left off; the conclusion of the Zamas arc. It's rare there's an enemy the Z Fighters can't defeat so that was an interesting turn. This is also the set up for the Tournament of Power amongst all the different universes. Goku is just so dumb and I hate that; like when did he become a meme? He was always a bit naive, sure. But he loved his family in the OG and here he is just so dumb...like asking why Vegeta wants to be their for the birth of his child instead of training. Like everyone in this series just has a one-track mind and it's dumb. I hate it.

Ok, on to the next!

With the start of Volume 5, Goku is still taking on the immortal Zamas. Unfortunately Goku is running out of strength. The story is actually turning from bad to worse for Goku and his friends.
There are again a lot of cool fights and twists in this one before this arc finally comes to an end. In general I am very satisfied with this story arc, although it was maybe an unusual way to finish off the main villain. Not something I expected and what I would have preferred; I would have liked to get an actual finish by Goku or Vegeta and not the way it turned out as it did. Still good tough ... The upside is that all the battle sequences were nicely drawn so far.

With the end of the Goku Black story arc, there's also a new arc to start: "The Tournament of Power" saga.
Goku wants to start training again and goes back to Zeno (and Future Zeno) to ask when his promised tournament is going to take place. This sets things in motion for the next arc; a tournament between the different universes. This will be a fight for their survival as each losing universe will be erased from existence. It starts of with an exhibition fight between the Gods of Destruction from the different universes. Hence, we get to see Beerus in action again.

Cool start so far!

Read this on the toilet.

Like the very first volume of Toyotaro's manga, this one feels pretty much worthless. The struggle against Zamas is nearly invalidated by the fact that the back half of the volume is light-hearted multiverse tournament setup stuff.

The entire manga feels like a fast-forwarded version of TOEI's anime, and this volume suffers from it. We don't get the silliness of Zamas turning into the planet or whatever, but instead we just get a handful of Shadow Clones who stand around before Goku remembers the Zenos button, and that's that. There are some unspoken hints at Ultra Instinct, Goku attempts to use Hakai against Zamas, and Vegeta "completes" SSB on his own after the battle, so some neat shit happens overall, but otherwise this is basically "we can't beat Zamas, so let's use Zeno as a plot device" followed by brief slice-of-life and "let's introduce all the other GoDs and Angels at once." Somewhat sloppy.

There's a hilarious bonus chapter at the end. After Zeno destroys Trunks's parallel universe, he and Mai have no home to return to, and so Bulma lets them crash at Capsule Corp. Gohan, showing signs of his father's absentmindedness, asks Trunks when he's going to go back home, after having saved his universe (Gohan not knowing that Zeno erased everything), prompting Trunks and Mai to seek a -new- parallel world, as we see in the "main" chapters in this volume. Fuckin' Gohan telling Trunks to say hi to his Bulma, good God!

****

EDIT (09/17/2024): Re-reading this, I'll bump it from Three to Four Stars. The back half is pretty comfy, even if it's still a bit of a whiplash from the Zamasu Arc.

Toyo still kinda sucks at action (too many speed lines!), and it's unfortunate the manga looks like it will indeed resume eventually instead of ending gracefully after Toriyama-sama's passing.

I started re-reading Super in honor of Toriyama, then fell off again because Toyo kinda sucks. But the flame has been rekindled by hype for Sparking Zero!

4.75 Stars. A surprisingly good end to my least favorite arc in Dragon Ball. I much prefer the manga version to the anime's handling of Zamas. Goku summoning Zeno never truly rubbed me the wrong way in either version but upon reading it it does feel a tad bit phoned in. The rest of the volume was fantastic I've been excited to get to the god of destruction exhibition match for a very long time. Can't wait to see how that goes.

Dragon ball super volume 5 is about when Zamazu and Goku black get the upper hand versus Goku, Vegeta and trunks because Zamazu and goku black fused and became super strong so Goku and Vegeta try their best to defeat the fused Zamazu and Goku black so i reccomend this book to anime fans or dragon ball fans to red this.

I really enjoyed this volume on Dragon Ball super, in this one we see the demise of Goku black and Zamasu. This is done at the hands of Zeno, Instead of Vegeta or Goku which is something I like because it shows that our two heroes aren’t always the strongest in the universe. That they do have to rely on outside forces to solve problems that are greater than ones that they can face and take care of on their own. It does create a complication however for Trunks and Mai because now they have no home sense Zeno destroyed the parallel universe. Although never say never because Emperor pilaf found a way for Trunks and Mai to time travel again, Whis also explains that they can just create another parallel timeline with two Trunks and Mais. That is the end of the Goku black storyline, then we start the Tournament of power storyline. Goku has been living a peaceful life as a farmer he’s getting bored and he decides he needs to start training. In this particular chapter Vegeta has returned to Earth because Bulma Is about to give birth to their second child. And here is where the truth bomb is dropped Vegeta calls out Goku we’re being a terrible father, because Goku doesn’t understand why Vegeta wants to stay and see his child be born. He goes why I wasn’t there for Gohan and Goten’s births. But Vegeta is correct, Goku is not a good father and Vegeta is proving to be the better father and husband out of the two of them. I like the one Line he says I’m definitely correct here definitely. Because he’s not wrong. This volume ends with Goku getting the tournament started and a pre-tournament with all 12 gods of destruction fighting each other. I look forward to reading the next volumes to see the rest of the tournament.

T1 = 5/5.
T2 = 4,5/5.
T3 = 4,5/5.
T4 = 4/5.
T5 = 5/5.
A+ dans le bus!

Ostateczna walka z Zamasu!

Rozwiń go w najtrudniejszego przeciwnika, z jakim bohaterowie do tej pory walczyli. Ups, nie wiadomo jak to wszystko zakończyć? Na cheatach! I to hardych.

Czy go lubię?

Here we get the ending of the Zamas / Black arc and the beginning of the tournament.

While the ending of the Black arc could have been handled better, it was still an improvement over the anime. My main gripe with the anime’s ending was the handling of future Trunks’s display of power. It just didn’t make much sense.

One thing the anime did much better was some of the character interactions. The scenes with Gohan and future Trunks were excellent and served to show future Trunks that Gohan had found happiness in this timeline. The anime simply did this better.

Like the anime, however, the manga still had future Trunks leave for another timeline - which just doesn’t make much sense when Mai and future Trunks are still going to have doppelgängers in that timeline; might as well stay in the main timeline.

Anyway, we also see the beginning of the tournament of power - or rather the seeds for it.

So basic right now in my book Zeno is the god of everything and he is playing chess he gets bored and thinks about getting rid of a universe and leaving only 4 universes but then Goku (the main person in dragon ball) shows up and asks about a tournament of power which Zeno and his future self agree to then they bring all the other gods and angels and tell them about the tournament that will happen soon in 40 hours from this point on. And my opinion on the book is that it is good and I really like the book and all the people and gods and angels in it but I hate Zamasu cause he be doing too much in the book and he is just a bad kAI(god) and Goku black is the same person basically Zamasu but better and he has the same bodie as Goku and he is evil and also a kai(god) and also I'm on page 164.
