Covert Vengeance

Rate this book
Revenge came at a heavy price.

Valkyrie hacker Amber Brown is deadly in her own right, but her preferred weapon is a keyboard. So after her teammates left her for dead, she took her revenge the way she was trained to—swiftly and brutally. Except one of her targets might be innocent. To right that wrong, Amber vows to rescue the at-risk Valkyrie no matter the cost, and this time she’s working alone. So when a sexy stranger shows up in the middle of a firefight and announces he’s been sent by her sister, it’s going to take a whole lot more than his word to make her trust him.

Chasing redemption may prove deadly.

Elite gun for hire Jesse Cordova lives on the edge of the law. When a new job offer sets off warning bells, he digs deeper and finds the startling truth. The woman he’s been tasked with capturing is a secret government assassin, and Amber Brown is unlike any target he’s gone after before. But bringing her in opens them up to a whole new level of danger, pitting them against one of the most ruthless assassins in the world. Now that the sexy Valkyrie has stolen his heart, Jesse will risk everything to see their mission through—knowing that the only way this ends is with one of them dying.

“Hey, man, I don’t know your situation with Amber,” Bautista began, “but here’s a word of advice from a guy who’s spent the last three years living with a Valkrie.” He paused, gave Jesse a pointed look. “These women? He shook his head. “Don’t ever - and I mean ever- get in her way or try to control her. Just don’t.”

“Had to find out whether you were going to kill me or not.”
A reluctant grin tugged at his mouth, and he let out a low chuckle. So ballsy. “Hell of a gamble, belleza.”

Rating 3.5/4 stars to Covert Vengeance

Covert Vengeance is the perfect title for this book - it brims with savagery and vengeance.

What I liked:

1) Kaylea Cross brings us lots of action and suspense with the Vengeance series! I love that it was dense with action and suspense!

2) Fractured Honor, which is part of Cross's Crimson Point series leans a little more on the romance with a minor level of suspense, but this series is apparently, completely, a female-strong, staunch with autonomous female brawn and brains - with warrior women known as the Valkries (manipulated and bred into governement assassins). I had no problem with the romance taking second place because i love some action!

2) I love a good, well-done, steamy love scene. There are a few in this book but the romance doesn't overwhelm the vengeance plot. The first romance scene between Jesse and Amber though, was smoking! So well done and seductive it left me fevered.

What I didn't like/concerns:

1) This book is the second in the series - which i knew when purchased - but i soon found myself like a lost pup, dropped in a world of action and trying to understand what i was missing. The reason for this, i understood, is that though this book is said to be a 'standalone' it hinges heavily on a longer-running arc, not just from the first book in the series, but i also understand that it has links to a separete series that precedes this one, and therefore a longer running arc. Only, it's more that a mantle is passed from character to character so that we have a chance to explore each character's predicamants and intense struggles with any romantic notion. So, this isn's a 'standalone' per se because it belongs to a larger narrative. There is, however, enough detail and exploration to guage the why's and what's of what happened that preludes the present story, so it's not a labour to roll with it. I can definitely see readers becoming enthralled by this series, but i was a tad disappointed to realise that this is more of a 'stepping stone' series - each book brings you closer to a united plot concept - because i was only really looking for a standalone read.

2) I was looking for a bit more with the final fight scene - it would have topped this story nicely.

To get the most out of the series, I highly suggest starting reading the first book, or even reading the series that precedes this!

Deciding on a rating was very tricky because i liked the story, the retribution, the savagery, the intense plot, the intrigue and clandestine operations but i didn't know how to feel about the missing pieces which made me anxious of what i had missed and whether i was receiving a complete picture.

Well damn, I enjoyed the hell out of this!
We all know I love a good kickass female lead and that was most definitely the case here, Amber being a Valkyrie.
I loved the plot, the execution, the sizzling tension between the leads.

I can't wait to read more of this series!

Received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Another winner in this series! Fully action packed while still giving us romance. This picked up right where the first book ended with Amber on a mission to right the wrongs she may have committed. But this would totally work as a stand alone because Kaylea Cross does a good job of catching you up.
I can't wait for the next book!

Good lord, I love to read romantic suspense! Love to sit at the edge of my seat wondering how in the hell the couple is going to get out of the mess they find themselves in and fall in love while they’re at it! Add in the fact that the female lead is a kickass assassin and I am all in!

And that’s just what I got with Covert Vengeance, book 2 in the fantastic Vengeance series. I loved meeting Amber in Stealing Vengeance and just knew she’d be amazing. She’d been through hell—and somehow managed to get revenge too—but she may have taken the revenge a bit too far.

Amber’s out to find out the truth—no matter how unsafe and potentially deadly the outcome. But she’s not alone. Jesse Cordova is right by her side—and he’d rather be no where else.

As Covert Vengeance’s story unfolds, and when the truth is finally revealed, will Amber and Jesse pull off their rescue op, or will one of the world’s most deadly assassin take them out? Honestly, I wasn’t quite sure! Seriously, there were times when I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough to find out if they were safe—and still falling for each other. **eye brow wiggle**

I really loved Amber and Jesse together. They were fun, sexy, smart, dangerous, sassy, and all around awesome. Add in the rest of the Valkyries and the men in their lives and the fun just doesn’t stop. They’re like a big, dysfunctional family who deeply loves each other, even when they drive each other crazy. I’m so enjoying this series and cannot wait for Explosive Vengeance to release in October. ~ Missy, 4.5 stars

I’m taking extraordinarily long with a Kaylea Cross book, which is unusual to say the least, which really meant that ‘Covert Vengeance’ was a massive disappointment on a scale that schocked me, seeing how Cross used to be a staple of mine.

The series of avenging women out for blood is an intriguing one, but thus far, I think I’m simply reading variations on a theme about closed-off, distrustful and distant women who operate alone (aren’t bred for relationships and commitment, naturally) who finally find someone to trust—after a series of suspenseful events that typically involve some life-or-death scenarios. Like ‘Stealing Vengeance’, ‘Covert Vengeance’ traverses the same blurred lines of conspiracy theories and secret dealings though it’s a lot more toned down here without the particular rough edge that I associate with suspense writers.

Cross’s Valkyrie characters didn’t seem to carry the cloaking weight of tragedy or angst that I’d expected them to have; instead, Amber and Megan felt like brashly petulant characters bulldozing their way around to kill everyone who’d wronged them, to the point where they trampled over their own partners in their blazing self-righteousness to be judge, jury and executioner.

Jesse/Amber as a pairing was as well, a lukewarm one that felt forced and emotionless (though Cross does write steamy scenes) and a connection that, like Tyler/Megan, was made with inexplicable near-instant love—somehow, they are right for each other because they have similar occupations—because this is after all, romantic suspense. In short, I just didn’t feel it and no amount of espousing a character’s beauty/strength/determination—traits that could as well, be negatively interpreted as headstrong, foolish and plainly TSTL at times—helped change my mind about them.

Maybe the Valkyrie sisterhood is one that Cross attempts to highlight, though the bonds weren’t so tangible that I felt moved by them; neither did I even like the women characters at all, much less Amber, which kind of defeated the whole point of the book and the romance which was clearly meant to take centre-stage.

The action scenes are fantastic, as always for a Kaylea Cross book. It's all the angst and the heroine martyr that just mucks up a good action-suspense book. I didn't like the heroine, Amber, and the whole save the sister Valkyries who were trained killers from childhood by an evil government program stuff got really, really old.

Amber is on a mission to rescue and secure the remaining Valkyries, but she is now the target of a baddie, Yuri Stanislav, because she killed his baddie Valkyrie girlfriend, Zoya. Never mind that Zoya and Yuri set up Amber to die and she barely escaped. Yuri has issued a contract on Amber and Jesse, a mercenary with a moral code picks it up, but decides he would rather play ball with the good guys this time. And, Amber is just soooo hot, especially when she is in warrior mode.

COVERT VENGEANCE continues Amber’s story, who we met in the previous book, as she tries to find more of their fellow Valkyries. Amber isn’t used to working with a team and she’s especially not used to trusting others so things aren’t easy between her and Jesse. She definitely puts him through a wild ride before she realizes he’s on her side. I liked this one but I also felt like all the extra time spent with Megan (Amber’s sister and the heroine from book 1) made it seem like COVERT VENGEANCE wasn’t as much about Amber. It’s not unusual for Kaylea Cross to build up other characters through her series but this time it felt too much like it was taking away from the main couple.

A page turner

This one was even better than the first, especially after getting attached to all the characters, so seeing them do what they do best will always make me smile. Looking forward to seeing what happens when they catch up to the crazy.

Riveting romantic suspense…

I think my heart is finally slowing down after the action and tension that blew up this emotion-filled spy-filled, intrigue of a romance. Yes, there was definitely a lot going on, with a variety of characters bringing their A-game as Amber was forced to face her past and make decisions about her future…

“She dealt in life and death. She had no business dreaming about frivolous things like romance or a future…”

Amber had one main goal in mind and she was not going to let anything, or anyone, get in her way. She had family again and she would do anything to protect it. She was used to being alone, though, and being forced to partner with Jesse made her angry and just a wee bit cranky. And man, she only got edgier and more kicka**, if that hardly seemed possible. There was chemistry and a give and take that could have been harsh if there wasn’t that thread of emotion bubbling under the surface for them both. Watching Amber deal with life-threatening situations without blinking an eye, but totally confused by the feelings she couldn’t get a handle on… Well, it was a beautiful, and entertaining, thing to watch. And Jesse? Well, he was ready to keep pace with Amber each step of the way. Protecting her but never standing in her way or taking away the independence she had fought so long for…

The romance was heating but so was the dynamics between this hard-a**, ready for anything, deadly group. This was a high-stakes game with a lot for everyone to lose and they were determined to win. And the telling was a roller-coaster ride from start to finish! Lots of questions answered but this group’s mission is far from done and I, for one, can’t wait…

The second book picks up with Amber after her escape and wanting to hack and find out who is setting them all up. Meanwhile, the man responsible has put a hit out and one of the men taking the assignment is Jesse Cordova who when he spots Amber remembers her from years ago from a training exercise. He was attracted to her then and still is. Instead of killing her he changes his mind and tries to help her but it takes some time for her to understand what he is trying to do. She is used to working alone, and the training exercise from the past did not end as she planned. Now she has mixed emotions because she was programmed not to have emotions, but finding her sister and also another Valkyrie is stirring up something inside of her and she does not know what it is. A good story with lots of action and some romance. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

Staying covert😁

We meet Amber in the first book of the Vengeance series, whereby she finds Megan her sister she thought long ago deceased! Being told she might have turned information about a fellow Valkyrie who might be innocent over to be killed...Amber sets out in an attempt to rescue her.

Jesse is a mercenary and takes on odd jobs. When he receives a job offer with a big money value attached he’s instantly suspicious. Contacting a friend for information, he finds out more about his target and takes the job, hoping to protect her even knowing she might not need it😍 But when they see each other across the way...the chemistry and attraction sizzles💕

This story was amazing and it was action packed from the absolute beginning❣️ So much going on and I absolutely cannot wait to meet Chloe next.....I reckon she will make things go off with a “BANG” 🔫

To be honest, I have to say I struggled to get through this book. While a fan of other books by Kaylea Cross, I simply didn't connect with the heroine, Amber. But I will admit this is the first book in this series that I've read so maybe that was more of the reason for my struggle.

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH ONE OF A VARIETY OF SOURCES. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

I've not read much of this author's works, but I can say that she does have a way of weaving suspense into a story that is so subtle, it is a complete surprise when things unfold. The same is true of this book! However, for me, it just wasn't as good as the first installment.

I think the biggest stumbling block for me was Amber herself. She was so closed off, it made it difficult for me to relate to her, let alone connect with her! Now, I get that a good portion of that was her training, but it also seemed like she was too closed off to even connect with Jesse, let alone have a romance with him! However, I did see that her relationship with Megan was evolving and growing, so I still hold out a lot of hope for her!

I liked Jesse as a hero for Amber. He could go toe to toe with her world and not blink. I liked how secure he was in his skills, and yet still had a moral compass to guide himself by. I found it to be rather unique combination, and an engaging one!

The story was definitely action packed and suspenseful, but I think it rather squeezed aside some of the romance of the story. Granted, I don't think either Jesse or Amber were the sentimental sort to go for a prolonged romance, but I felt as a reader that the romance felt a little too "wham, bam, thank you, ma'am".

There's enough dropped throughout this book that I definitely want to read the next book in the series!

Amber and Jesse.

I'm really loving the Valkerie series 2 books in and I am beyond hooked.
Amber is a kick-ass assassin but then so is Jesse...lol 2 people who thought they'd never be able to have a true relationship find each other and figure out just how far they would go for someone they truly love.
It's great to catch up with old favorites and I love all the new characters as well, the action and adventure are as always highly entertaining, gripping and suspenseful.

For quite a bit of this book, I wasn’t sure if I’d continue. Like the first book of the series, the characters aren’t especially well developed, so I wasn’t that interested. It improved after a while, such that by the end I was happy to start the next book. The Valkyrie concept is good, but it hasn’t lived up to its potential yet. I read the ebook. 3/5

Wow! What a pair in the kickass Amber and the hunky Jesse! This is a terrific second story in a series filled with excitement, danger, intrigue, romance and thrilling characters. As assassin, Jesse, is tasked with bringing in the elusive Amber he gets more than he's bargained for and soon these two are fighting to stay alive and to keep their hands off of each other. The attraction is sizzling! I love these Valkyrie stories with the fierce women and plots that keep me on the edge of my seat with the fast-paced suspense and steamy romance. And the sightings of old friends from previous stories/series is terrific. Yeah, Alex! As usual with this author, the writing is stellar, the characters are to die for and the bad guys get what they deserve. I look forward to the next installment featuring these awesome women, their fabulous sisterhood and the sexy alpha men they attract. This author never fails to entertaining and this story is no exception. Just spectacular! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.

Amber is a hacker Valkyrie and is looking for a woman who she may have accidentally sold her whereabouts to the enemy. Amber was on an op and the team double crossed her and left her to be captured. Now she’s determined to find the other Valkyrie women and get justice for them. Jesse is a hitman and takes a job, to either bring in or kill Amber. But he believes something is fishy so he calls a friend and finds out a little about her. They rescue another Valkyrie and take her with them to England, to meet up with the others and come up with a plan to take down the man who has a bounty on Amber’s head. Amber has always been alone but now Jesse has wormed his way into her heart.
A badass woman who is dangerous but more so on a computer. A man who kills but never innocent people. The sparks fly when they get together but can Amber let her walls down enough for Jesse to get through? Excellent story with action and sex. I love these books because I can get out of my head for a little while. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

I am really getting invested in this series. The characters continue from book to book allowing the reader to really get to know them and feel their story. Amber intrigued me in book one and I loved her personal journey. Jesse is one of my favorite male characters I have read. The women in these books are strong, but the men have the strength to support them. As the team continues to search for their own, we get a lot of action, suspense, and plotlines that feel like there is something bigger at play that is being revealed at the perfect pace. The romance is steamy and sweet. This is what romantic suspense looks like. Highly recommend!

This is my kind of romantic suspense! Amber is a kick-ass heroine with lots of layers. I love seeing who she becomes when around her sister and now with Jesse. And Jesse... he is great. Total book boyfriend material. I wouldn't have complained if there was a touch more focus on the romance, but the suspense makes up for that. There is lots of action and intrigue in this one right from the beginning. I also adored that scene towards the end with Megan and Tyler -- what a nail biter! Looking forward to #3!

This is Amber and Jesse's story and picks up right after Stealing Vengeance. Amber is a master hacker and after realizing a mistake that she may have caused, she is out to set it right, Jesse is hired to track down Amber and when the two meet, the chemistry is hot. Filled with action, witty humor, members of the Valkyrie posse and their loved ones, makes for a terrific story. I totally enjoyed this one. An awesome read! 4.5 stars*****

Covert Vengeance picks up where Stealing Vengeance left off, in the new series, Vengeance . There is a new couple but the overall feel with action and romance is similar. The Valkyries don't expect to have relationships, to be free enough or trust anyone to stay with them.

The setup also mirrors Stealing Vengeance as the guy comes from a more normal childhood, went into the military but has family. The guy in both books is a bit insta-love and all in the relationship very quickly. I'm really not used to this.  I have had the woman be unwilling to commit before though.

Jesse and Amber were a great fit and are stand up people, for assassins. Jesse knew something was fishy with this contract and made some calls.  The way he handles the situation was unusual, but shows a lot of integrity.  Amber is putting herself at risk to try to rescue someone, since she caused them to be captured. She is also looking to be part of the team tracking down all the other Valkyries.  I'm looking forward to seeing how that progresses, and now we have 2 couples as part of the team. So we can see them and enjoy their progress together.

Keeps getting better

This is the second book of Kayea’s new series. This series focuses on the Valkyrie we have already met and introduces new, amazingly strong and resilient woman who as young orphaned girls were obtained by the government for the Valkyrie program. These young girls were then trained into lethal killers under a strict and unforgiving program.
We get to characters of past series (hello the very sexy and well aging Alex Rycroft) which is the first reason this book is awesome. The second are the amazing women you have met and the new Valkyrie you will meet. The plots are thoroughly engaging and of course the new sexy alpha males who have to learn to step back to protect and win the hearts of these lethally trained intelligent powerhouses. If they don’t, these women will and do to set them straight. I am extremely antsy for the next book
P.S. if I had any issue, it is with the wait between books. Kaylea, a powerhouse of the literary world, keeps offering strong stories I love getting lost in. Please Keep them coming but can I beg for a shorter duration between releases 🙏. And of course thank you Kaylea, I think your brilliant so just ignore my little pout above.

in the first book, Amber sort of the villain of the story. well the second book is better than the previous one. it has a real villain, a thug a former Russian mafia who seek revenge towards Amber after she killed his girlfriend, Zoya who was a Valkyrie too.

usually a hacker play the part as the brain of the team but not Amber. from the beginning, she is a kickass warrior who knows how to use her guns and blade. imagine having that kind of skills and a brilliant brain. she is a perfect operative.

Amber tried to save Hannah after she thought that Hannah was innocent but she sold her out to the enemy. luckily she met Kiyomi and it turned out that Hannah was a dirty Valkyrie. it make Amber relieved and she could concentrates on to finding the other Valkyries.

met jesse. he is a perfect match for Amber. he also a hitman.. a former military man who takes a job as a hitman because he see so many times that the bad guy always bending the law

their chemistry was insane. he pursues her and shows her that they deserve a happy live too.

this book almost perfect. the action the romance proportion is balance

like to see the Manor

Emotional and full off guilt and turmoil. Amber is determined to find Hannah, still not sure if she was responsible for betrayal or had she sold her out by mistake. This is tense and intense, there are some moments that are powerful, full of action or emotions running havoc as Amber fights her feelings and training where Jesse is concerned. But she is also coming to terms at being reunited with her sister after thinking she was dead for years. It's a rollercoaster of planning, chasing and escaping, then a climax that had me claustrophobic at the scene. Twists and turns and fabulous characters, interesting plot and a steady to fast pace. A little romance is added in as well as new friendships. I think I spotted a spark somewhere with other characters as well so I will be keeping my eyes on that. Fabulous read.
