A Curse threatening to break free. A deadly rivalry between Covens. An eldritch monster hunting students.
Sylvie Asleton must prove herself worthy, or lose magic forever and with it all hope for survival.
Even with the threat of expulsion and being treated like an outcast, Sylvie refuses to give up her dream of learning magic.
After a brush with tragedy, she realizes being a Witness comes at a steep price. And anyone who allies with her is put in the treacherous crosshairs of monster and Magi alike.
Sylvie needs to rely on her Coven and a hefty dose of luck if she’s going to catch a monster, or there won’t be a Brookmoors to be kicked out of.
Coven of Glass is the riveting second installment in the Brookmoors Magi series, a dark urban fantasy with a deep magic system set in a hidden world rife with supernatural creatures, fantastical vistas, and ancient structures with a mind of their own.
My name is James T. Callum and I’m not going to talk to you in the third person or make it seem like I’ve got some publisher or editor who has a bio on me.
I'm always available to talk, connect with readers, fellow authors, and lovable book nerds:
This is just me, talking to you, the reader. I’m no different than you, I love reading and gaming just the same as everybody else.
In fact, I’ve loved reading for as long as I could remember. From the very first fantasy book I read, The Wizard of Earthsea, I was hooked.
For just as long I’ve also been an avid gamer and DND player (as well as other tabletop RPGs). Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Illusion of Gaia, and on through the years as stories and graphics became better and better.
You’ll be able to find hints of inspiration from all sorts of RPGs and video games in my works. From the Final Fantasy series to Warcraft, Age of Empires to Anno, and games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Because who doesn’t love a little cosmic horror thrown in for fun?
These games (and countless others) have inspired me ever since I was a kid, and they continue to serve as my muse now that I’m much older.
Writing has always been my greatest aspiration and with your help, I hope to make it a full-time job. At the time of this writing, I still work a day job like most people. It is only thanks to Patreon that I was able to dedicate some of my spare time to writing.

Move over Harry Potter... Sylvie Asleton and her coven of misfits are taking over. This story is magical overload. It keeps getting better and better. James T. Callum's world building is fantastical. He paints a very detailed picture of Brookmoors with its expanse landscape and grand architecture. His character development it top notch. Each Character is unique with their own set of complexities, their own opinions, and their own personality. They are well developed and multidimensional. Relationship chemistry whether it's amicable or explosive vibrates right off the page.
The plot is intriguing and suspenseful, with great pace and well developed ideas. The writing style is rich, lively and full of action, you will find yourself easily drawn into this magical world, walking beside the characters, experiencing their journey.
I think my only critique would be with the story's flow. While it flows well most of the time I think it would be more harmonious if the author held back just a bit on the details and left room for the readers imagination.
I enjoyed this book. I recommend it to any fans of J. K. Rowling, Cassandra Clare, Madeleine L'Engle, Philip Pullman, or C. S. Lewis. I believe it has all the makings of classic.
The truth has been hidden from Sylvie since she lost her family. Now, she finally has a chance to become the Magi she always wanted to be. Learning magic at Brookmoors Academy is a surreal and incredible prospect for Sylvie who is used to weathering the worst.
But Sylvie’s ability to attend this magical college hidden in another dimension hangs by a thread. Treated like an outcast, with the threat of expulsion hanging over her head every day, she needs to prove her worth to actually be able to stay at Brookmoors and not be cast back into a magicless world.
This urban fantasy is rich with world building, diverse supernatural characters, intricate magic systems and character development in the form of an emotional journey to find your place in life. The writing has immersive detail that is comparable to the likes of Wheel of Time.
I’d recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy and remotely enjoys Harry Potter and the Magicians.
An amazing read that simply does not get the attention it deserves.

The book is great. I loved the constant building of Pyx's and Sylvie's friendship but it was great to see that in her time of need due to unforseen circumstances her and Ptao could build a friendship. It is enchanting to see Sylvie finally gain the life she should have had was it not the curse of the Shrike.

I can see that the book is getting a little better, now that the Shrike's Curse is taken care of. However, they have revealed that it would not go away. I think that explains, later on, there's less dialogue somewhere in the end. Though, the author has managed to have a balance between narration, dialogue, and description.
However, I feel like some of the stuff were not necessary, because I see that the story was too descriptive, taking too much of the page or so. What's worst was that it was too soon too reveal that Pyx was an Enferri. The author could've revealed it at some point in an interesting way. Lastly.there was not much excitement in the story. Usually, it's Sylvie hanging out with her new friends, even though it's part of character development. Although, it would be nice if there were some excitement from here and there.
I also think it was unnecessary about bringing the dean in the story, because in the first book, the dean promised he would tutor Sylvie for his powers. But in the second book, he only appeared toward the end, where he was awarding Sylvie a medal for saving the school. And instead of the dean tutoring Sylvie, it was one of the teachers that was helping her. So that also disappointed me the most.
Overall, I enjoyed the bit of humor and how characters are diverse. I do hope the author will continue on his writing journey and that he will continue to improve each day.
