The hearing and the preaching of the Word during church is worship, but if we are honest it can be hard to focus during the sermon (even a good sermon.) This is true if you are young or old, new or seasoned. Noteworthy Sermon Notes is an elegant aide to help you actively listen while the sermon is preached.
Inside is: -More than 150 pages for you take as many or as little notes as needed -Setup in a grid format. You can write big or small, diagram or doodle, whatever will help you focus -A short chapter on how to take notes, how to outline and other focus tips -No distracting games or decoration -Top corners are ready to be folded down so you can refer back to a special sermon or signify the beginning of a new series
Josh Hamon is the author of The Real Martin Luther, the most fun introduction you'll ever read to the Reformation and the man who started it. Hailing from the best coast he writes while riding the ferry each day.
Witty and sometimes too sharp, he's the husband of one, the father of three and is always thinking about getting another tattoo.
What a marvel in this modern age, the author can review their own work.
I wrote Noteworthy Sermon Notes for my son. At my church children sit in the whole service starting in the 3rd grade but at that age, he can't focus for an entire sermon. So I did what any mediocre parent would do, I went on Amazon. I did find plenty of sermon notebooks but nothing that I thought would help my son actually listen. Instead, there were lots of books with decorations, a few with games and almost all had very little room for actually taking notes. So I gave him a regular lined notebook. He wasn't taking any notes.
"What's wrong buddy, why aren't you taking notes?"
"I don't know how to take notes." Man, I am a bad parent. So we work on how to take notes, he still isn't taking any notes.
"What's wrong buddy, why aren't you taking notes?"
"I don't know which notes are the right notes to take." Oh no, he feels like these are notes for a test. We talk about how note taking, in this case, isn't to help you study for a test, they are to help you be an active listener. I don't even care if he ever refers back to them, I just want to him focus during the sermon or at least stop yawning every forty-five seconds.
All of that lead to creating Noteworthy Sermon Notes, it starts with a short chapter on note-taking and other focus tips. The rest of the pages are simple graph paper so you can write big, write small, draw, even diagram as needed. Games and decorations not included.
An unexpected bonus of your children taking notes during the sermon: Last Easter our pastor was preaching on why Jesus had to die, it's a great sermon. My son's notes are not great. For whatever reason what the pastor is saying isn't getting through to him. Since he's taking notes, I can see that he is woefully misunderstanding the sermon. This is wonderful because now we can talk about it instead of the wrong information secretly sinking in.
(Shameless plug, I make uncommon books for uncommon geeks, please check out my first book The Real Martin Luther for the most fun way to learn the whole story of Martin Luther.)
