I was born in Ikom, Nigeria (where my parents were missionaries) and come from a Liverpool medical family, but am not a doctor of medicine. . After graduating in Jurisprudence from Jesus College (University of Oxford), I was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn. Despite qualifying as a barrister, my first love was English; this led to a PhD in English Literature at Birkbeck College (University of London).

In my academic career, I lectured and published widely on the subject of tuberculosis and nineteenth-century literature, but somehow managed to avoid contracting galloping hypochondria and turned my attention to crime fiction.

Please note this book was first published as “A Mind Diseased”

DI Gil Markham and DS Noakes have dual investigations .. both that put the Newman Hospital in the crosshairs.

Dr. Jonathan Warr, a consultant psychiatrist, went missing a year ago. He disappeared after allegations of patient physical abuse. His remains have recently been found in the woods. According to the Medical Examiner there are signs of strangulation.

Newman Hospital has long been talked about , albeit very quietly. There are rumors that some patients are checked in ... and then never seen again. Possible corruption with collusion between doctors and families who may benefit from a will .... or just to get rid of a troublesome relative?

Was Dr. Warr one of those doctors ... or did he see what was going on? Either way, someone wanted him dead.

The investigation goes into high gear when an anonymous tip points to one of their own. There soon follows the death of another person connected to the hospital. One of the mental patients in a rage .... or did she know something?

Lies, secrets, twists and turns abound on every page leading to a very explosive surprising ending. This is well written with a great whodunit. Although easily read as a stand alone, I highly recommend starting with Book 1 of this 4-book series.

A body is found and it turns out to be the body of a doctor who disappeared from a Mental Hospital a year earlier. It was assumed the disappearance was the result of depression and that he had made a new life elsewhere or committed suicide. Tests reveal neither of these was the case and he was in fact murdered.

Markham is tasked with investigating that and also a 'secret' investigation involving corruption. As is usual when Markham is around more bodies turn up and the team is up against time to crack the case before more people lose their lives.

A steadily moving detective series that keeps the readers' interest as we follow the investigation around the twists, turns and lies all the way to the surprising ending.

Whodunit Surprise

Having just finished the four D. I. Markham books, I was impressed at how well the stories were crafted. The characters are interesting and remain so throughout the series. The murderers are surprising, always a joy.
My only caution is the language, specifically adjectives, adverbs and ten dollar words. While needed occasionally, Moloney never fails to use two words were none would do. The main character doesn't stand somewhere at dusk, but in the gloaming. He nods, briskly AND decisively. The issue makes reading these great stories a bit of a slog at times.
Recommended, just not all at once!

Toxic medicine.

A well written, well plotted thriller. A dog walker finds a skeleton which turns out to be the body of a missing doctor who worked in a locked ward psychiatric hospital. The hospital has a bad history and our chief detective has been told of more scandal, patients disappearing and a senior policeman involved. As usual Inspector Markham employs his intelligence, his sensitivity and past experience in being personally abused as a child to find the killer and deal with his fey pre-Raphaelite partner who has a secret which is corroding their relationship. He is supported by his faithful Falstaffian sidekick and together with the addition of newer, younger members to the team they find the killer. This is an excellent addition to this series and highly enjoyable. Thoroughly recommended. Truly thrilling.

This book was first published as “A Mind Diseased”, which made it difficult to find, as I was trying to find Markham #4, "Crime in the Hospital". A very annoying habit of authors and/or publishers to bring out a book under several titles. Not exactly a recommendation in my book.

The story is well plotted, and well written. Fortunately less of the catholicisms, and fortunately a little less of his girlfriend. She did have a bit of a front row seat in the first three books, and this makes the whole better balanced. This time we find our intrepid duo (or sometime quartet) in a mental hospital, or in Noakesies parlance a looney bin. It takes a while, and DI Burton gets seriously threatened, but all ends well.

A scrabble players delight

I enjoyed the book for its real to life interplay of characters, the subplot of difficult personal relationships and of course the down to earth character Noakes. It is essential to read Moloney's work with a dictionary. She has a very impressive knowledge of words which are then crafted into some very memorable phrases; not in a distracting way as with Henry James but very good indeed. I would not recommend playing scrabble with Catherine Moloney. I also really like gripping British tales without American style blood and guts. It's certainly a good read.

Smart and Clever Plot

I love the Author's style of writing. This was a very interesting story and intricate plot. I am making my way through the series. I like each book I read better than the previous. Perfect reading to draw you away from the day to day. Although I must warn you the general and overriding storyline is a very dark and disturbing circumstance referencing a time in very recent history when mentally ill patients were treated very poorly. The story was reverently told in that regard. On to the Ballet!

Good Book

This series of books just keeps getting better. I love the characters and how they get along. The mysteries are excellent. My only complaint is that the author finds it necessary to throw in “bad” words every now and then. They are not needed so why are they there? I look forward to reading more in the series.

Entertaining

Another gothic tale with multiple murders to solve. Much foreboding, characters with secrets and some challenges for the relationships between our continuing characters.

Another fascinating book

Yet again. Couldn't put the book down. "Just another couple of pages" I would say, then a chapter later 😮😮 Really pleased there is another book in the series to read.

Pretty good

A death in the local mental facility . Not good. The boss , DCI , wants it solved ASAP , without any fuss and nothing to indicate close associates in the department . Weird , yet solvable .

Although I had a suspicion of the murder(s) early on in the book, I still quite enjoyed it. Some complain of the author's vocabulary, but I love that I have to look up and learn new words. The writing is beautifully descriptive and the plots are enjoyable.

This is the first DI Markham book that I didn't really like. Don't get me wrong, it was okay, but nowhere near as good as the previous three. I found myself skipping pages, wanting to just get it over with. Hoping for a better one next time.

Another great addition to the D I Markham series. A thrilling murder mystery with the body count continuing to rise with plenty of plot twists and culprits you would never have suspected. Highly recommended.

Read in record time

Another belter with its red herrings and twists, but the characters so nicely gel together like a family. The ending came too quick for me though.

The body of Dr Warr, of Newham Hospital, who disappeared a year ago has finally been discovered. Markham and his team investigate . But there have been reports of patients gone missing from the hospital. Is there a connection with police corruption.
An entertaining modern mystery

In this we know more about Markham, a man who chose his dwelling place because it had a. view of the cemetery. To watch the dawn come up over it, the ghosts of murdered ones sometimes seem more vivid for they all were still alive for him.
A Doctor Warr was murdered because of his activities at Newman. A young receptionist found out about it and was next. At a bar she had mention of patients coming in at not leaving and dared a reporter to call it in.
An on going investigation of malpractice at Newman, making it even more of a dangerous place. Good plot with murders and the danger of the team to even out another good story
