The Portals of Tartae: The Land with the Two Moons

Rate this book
In the first book of The Portals of Tartae saga, Olivia Halin plunges into an enchanted land to discover there are Portals between the worlds and that the fate of the world lies in her hands.

Olivia lives in the small city of Leve, a place with kind people and unnecessary fences where nothing really interesting ever happens. She is unaware of the mysteries of the world and dreams about a life of adventure.

Until she falls into one.

Olivia falls into another land, a place with magic and two moons gleaming in the sky. A world of warriors, sorcery, and secrets that she needs to uncover.

Once in Tartae, where old magic is still very much alive, Olivia learns more about who she really a witch and warrior. She embarks on a dangerous journey through enchanted forests and sinister castle ruins, but fortunately, she has the help of powerful witches, wizards, mythical creatures and the ancient Clan that vowed to protect the Portals.

Now Olivia’s mission is to reconnect with the mighty Portals so she can destroy them and reestablish balance in all the worlds. Should she fail, evil will spread as never before, nature will perish, and the world will change forever.

The Portals of The Land with The Two Moons is a remarkable tale in fantasy literature—a tale about friendship, greed, ancient forests, the strong power of nature, and magic. An epic adventure full of likable characters that take place in a meticulously crafted realm. Author Marcia Soligo has a unique voice and a melodic storytelling style, giving the narrative a delicate but powerful tone.

Great lovable characters. Very adventurous.

I really enjoyed this story! The characters were likeable. I loved all the good characters. The liked how boring the main bad guy was, because it was unexpected. The unique dark characters were pretty grotesque/eerie. The story is about 2 senior teenagers who live in our world. Olivia is living a lonely life with a grandma who is never home. Her parents died. She has a best friend named Trevor. He lives with his Dad since his mom died. So they are relatable. Olivia works at a bookstore where she reads during her downtimes. It can be a pretty boring job. They accidentally fall through a portal & end up in another world. A world with 2 moons. You have to read this intense & amazing adventure these kids go through. Did I mention they've been there before, but don't remember a thing? See what I mean find out how crucial Olivia & Trevor are to the keeping this new world safe.

After connecting with the author on Facebook, I was extremely excited to dive into The Portals of Tartae by Marcia Soligo! Marcia graciously sent me a signed copy of her wonderful novel, and I have to say, it was such a pleasant surprise!

The novel is about Olivia Halin, a young girl who is suddenly thrust into a seemingly unknown world, named Tartae, with her best friend, Trevor. Olivia and Trevor soon discover that there is something strange and magical about this world with two moons. The two go on many adventures in Tartae and are tasked with a huge challenge that puts the fate of both Tartae, and their own world, in their hands.

Honestly, if I were describing this book to someone, I would say it is similar to The Chronicles of Narnia, only it’s more modern and ultimately higher quality! The Portals of Tartae gives the reader that same whimsical feeling, that you get when you experience another world through a book. However, there were so many ways in which this book raised the bar for portal fantasy.

First of all, the writing in this novel is poetic, and absolutely breathtaking at certain points! On top of that, the themes throughout the book of conquering evil and appreciating nature (among others), are so inspirational and are flawlessly intertwined with the plot. This book has so much depth, that I feel as though I could read it again and find countless more hidden treasures within its pages!

Additionally, the characters were very likeable in so many ways, but Olivia truly shined as the protagonist! From the outset of the book I felt as though Olivia was very easy to relate to. Her feelings were similar to feelings that many people experience in their lives, and I soon became invested in her story. Soligo clearly put a lot of work into developing Olivia, and all the other characters in the novel.

I also enjoyed the little romantic details of Olivia’s life, but I appreciated that the romance did not overtake the plot of the story. Similarly, I love that Olivia’s best friend is a boy, and that their relationship was both deep and platonic. While I occasionally enjoy the friends-to-lovers trope, I think it is used a lot, and Olivia’s relationship with Trevor felt perfect in my opinion.

Overall, I think The Portals of Tartae is a highly underrated book that has the potential to become a modern classic portal fantasy novel! I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to read and review this wonderful hidden gem, and I hope many others get the chance to discover the magic that I experienced while reading this book!

This enjoyable fantasy is my first experience with this author. I definitely recommend checking her out! Have you heard the theory that other worlds exist just a step away from our own? Do you believe in alternate worlds? Could you have visited such a place as you slept?

Oliver and Trevor live near one another and are best friends. Olivia is an orphan. She works is a used bookstore. Trevor is a college student whose father expects much from him. Their lives seem quite different, but they share something few others do.

As the two sleep, they visit another world, Tartae. Tartae is quite different from their everyday world. The technical advances they are used to don’t exist there. But Tartae has something we don’t, magic.

Tartae holds portals to many worlds, not just the one where the friends live. Any place that has great power also has someone that wishes to exploit it. Tartae is no different. One man wants to use the portals for his own ends.

Walking home one day, Olivia and Trevor fall through a hole filled with darkness. Their destination is Tartae. However when they arrive, it is without their memories of the place and the allies they have made there. The two are integral to the effort to keep the portals from being used for evil.

How can they possibly help their friends when they don’t remember any of the battle skills, they have spent so long acquiring on their nighttime visits? When they don’t remember their friends, or how to wield magic?

A fun adventure with a lovely style

I’m always up for a portal fantasy so a fantasy about portals seemed the perfect fit. And what a fun time it was! I’m looking forward to continuing the adventure in Tartae!

Olivia and Trevor are fun main characters and it’s nice to have a platonic pair. I don’t dislike romance but you rarely see two friends go on adventures without it turning that way so that was a refreshing element!

Likewise, the pair work well off one another. Trevor is impulsive, Olivia is patient. Olivia is courageous, Trevor needs convincing. It helps them compliment each other.

There’s a lot of telling. There’s a lot of exposition dumping. But…it works. By all accounts, it shouldn’t but it does. The only way I can explain it is that it is reminiscent of Narnia. The way the prose is written sounds like someone telling a story to their child and it works, amazingly, but mysteriously well!

I read this book based on The Biased Bibliophile’s recommendation, and I was hooked from the very first paragraph! I’m thoroughly impressed that this is the author’s first novel considering how wonderful and high quality it was. The writing was smooth and flawless. I really liked all the characters, particularly Trevor with his funny and nervous humor. The ending definitely left me hanging, so I sure hope there will be a sequel!

A magical adventure

A charmingly told tale of two friends thrown into a magical world where they are torn between wanting the reality of home or to discover more about the strange land of Tartae, because it seems Tartae might just be where they belong. Looking forward to what happens next!

Slow and kind of boring. Too much telling and not enough showing in the writing. Lot's of grammar issues. Weird and abrupt transitions also.

For my clean readers: violence
