Short overview/review.
What a strong and sweet heroine. But, I did have some problems with her kidnaping of the hero's nephew. The rating went from 5 to 4 for that reason.
The hero I loved!!!
The storyline was interesting and had me very engaged till 2:30 AM. 😂
Nice to read a Historical Romance that more true to the time period and not feel like a contemporary Historical. Yep, I went there. 😬

Finally we get Leo's story. Head spymaster for The League. Leo Duke of Carlisle has fallen in love with the last person on earth he should love. Bridget O'Malley was a Fenian agent who kidnapped the young 8 year old Edward Duke of Burghly. Bridget pretending to be a governess named Jane Palliser put a gun to Edwards head. Oh I can't forgive you Bridget even if the gun was empty. You emotional scared a child. How could Leo even marry her? Edward is his nephew.

This story was hard for me to read because I had already formed my opionion of Bridget. The story is well written. Great cast of characters Love the Hot and eroctic sex scenes. I loved Leo the Duke of Carlisle's character. But I just couldn't like Bridget. Which is why the story gets 3 stars instead of 5 stars. Bridget being the Lead Female character of the story just didn't work for me. She is always plotting and planning to betray the very people who are protecting and caring for her. She is a villain. Yeah I know her half brother is being held in prison. But why trust the Fenains who have murdered people and wants you to murder people and a child.

He’s Gruff , stoic, opinionated, full of confidence, and very Ducal .
He’s also the most enigmatic man she’s ever met and she’s falling for him despite her determination not to .

She the enemy, a Finian , not to be trusted , she’s also beautiful , sensual, the woman of his dreams , a banshee he can’t shake , and he doesn’t trust her .

Can two people so different, fighting for opposing sides , him for his country, her for her beliefs and her brothers freedom, ever be happy together ?
This is a really wonderful story , full of tension but also some very tender and stunningly beautiful moments, two people from such diverse backgrounds trying to understand and trust each other.

I adored this book!
Scarlet has written with such passion for these characters it had me totally spellbound, I couldn’t put it down .
The whole story was beautiful and so touching , it brought tears to my eyes .

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Spoiler Alert below...

Wow, this is one of my new favorites from Mrs. Scott. The premise for this story is so exciting. Bridget, a good person, trapped in an impossible situation makes the only choice she thinks will save her brother. It is a decision that would be hard to forgive. Leo, duty bound and intrigued by Bridget, does what he has to do. Two people who shouldn't come together do against all odds. Leo and Bridget have sad backstories, though vastly different. The passion between these two is irresistible and I got swept away. SPOILER: I was surprised at how easily Bridget was forgiven by those she betrayed even though she deserved to be forgiven, in my opinion. She really needed to atone for her naivete! You already knew about the kidnapping attempt if you read the first book. If someone tried to kidnap my child to deliver him to a madman I would never forgive nor trust them again, no matter how desperate they were! I guess I'm just not that big of a person!

This book is up there with Sweet Scandal and Her Lovestruck Lord. I loved the angst. The captive situation is SEXY! I was rooting for Leo. He turned out to have a big heart (as all of Mrs. Scott's heroes do)! I loved this book and would highly recommend.

If you haven’t already read Book 1 in this series, do not read this review further.

This story stretched implausibility beyond the breaking point, to the point of insult, because there is simply no setting - even in Romancelandia - where this plot works.

Our hero, Leo, is a secret agent for the British government, and his job is to disrupt a group of advocates for Irish home rule called the Fenians. This group is dangerous - we learned in Book 1 that the Fenians assassinated the heroine’s husband, whose name is Ara (and up to that point in time, her husband was also the only father that Ara’s young son, Edward, had ever known). This background is important.

After murdering Ara’s husband, the Fenians in Book 1 decided to target Edward, as well, and who was sent to protect them? Clay, Leo’s BROTHER (my emphasis will become relevant later). He is also a government agent, as well as Edward’s real father. Well, Clay and Ara reconcile and Clay is thrilled to learn he has a son. Toward the end of Book 1, though, we meet Bridget (using an alias), the heroine of Book 2, which is the novel I’m actually reviewing. She is working with the Fenians, and she unsuccessfully attempts TO KIDNAP EDWARD. What was the plan? Not to hurt him, she swears! She was just going to turn him over to the man who SUCCESSFULLY CONSPIRED TO MURDER HIS STEPFATHER. Leo stops her, saves the day, and all is well.

Except Leo doesn’t take Bridget to jail. Instead, he stashes her in his house because he wants to fuck her, but (obviously) falls in love with her and - Jesus take the wheel - marries her. Marries the woman who kidnapped his nephew and was going to hand him over to a murderer. The author wants us to hand wave that fact because she was operating under duress. Yeah, no. Sorry. Can’t do it.

And you know what the author does to resolve the narrative tension that SHOULD have opened up between Leo and Clay, as well as Leo and Ara? Nothing. Not one darned thing. Ara and Clay just fairy godparent forgive Bridget for stealing their child with the intent of turning him over to one of the folks who plotted the murder of the man who raised him. And we don’t even see the scene where this miracle of forgiveness took place!!!!

There is no world where this fairytale resolution of a massive problem makes a drop of sense. Leo and Clay don’t even fight about it! The situation is just magically fixed. I can suspend disbelief with the best of them, but I cannot enjoy a story that requires me to abandon every functioning brain cell that I possess.

The thrill, the excitement, I could not stop thinking what is she thinking, what is he thinking, what is she going to do next, what is he going to do next. When I needed to stop reading for the night I did not know where I wanted to stop. Leo and Bridget had vast differences in their beliefs, which caused them to be enemies and fighting on opposites sides. The combustion of heat between them was thrilling.
This is one of the first books I read by Scarlett Scott, but it will not be my last.

The Duke of Carlisle is not having his best day. Arriving at his brother Clay's for Clays wedding, drunk, out of sorts and despondent, he finds himself at odds with what he finds there. Nearing midnight, he runs into, literally, a young woman - a beautiful young woman who calls herself the governess to The Duke's nephew. The Duke, Leo by name, is thunderstruck. His work with the Home Office or The Special League, has not been satisfactory. The Fenians, Irish rebels fighting viciously for Home Rule were responsible for the brutal slaying of his future sister-in-laws late husband. In his cups, he becomes somewhat maudlin when the governess tells him her name is Jane - a name that still haunts him. More, he is becoming aroused at the mere sight of this woman - not a good thing all things considered. He does not dally with the staff! She on the other hand, is haughty in her perusal of him, noting his less than sober state and the fact that he smells bad. However, even in this drunken state, Leo has sharp eyes and feels something amiss when she speaks to him. A secret? The hint of an accent he can't quite place?
He asks again for her name and again she responds with Jane - the hated name from his youth. The name that taught him love was not real and he had nothing but The Home Office in his life - that and his duty to his country and to protect The Duchess of Burgly, widow of the late Duke of Burgly, and the woman about to become his sister-in-law. Leo loved only two people in his life, his brother Clay and his step mother Lily Ludlow, mistress to Leo's father and Clay's mother. So much going on in his life he hardly knows how to take it all in. His desire for this mysterious governess and the surety that she harbours secrets. He does know that this woman has feelings for him, feelings she is fighting to keep down. She must. For her own sake and the sake of someone close to her.
During the wedding breakfast, Clay mentions that there have been arrests made in Dublin - news that has the governess spilling her wine from shaking hands. They have no clue that she, in reality, Bridget O'Malley, is their enemy and a dangerous one at that. She cannot let them find out what her mission is or that special someone in her life will die.
The road these two must travel is one of deceit, hatred, danger and a forbidden love. Bridget knows she must act soon before she herself is also caught in this vicious web and if that happens, all will be lost. Historically correct re the Fenians - this is a captivating tale of hardships, wickedness and desire. I loved every page and could hardly bear to put it down. Do read it for you will not be disappointed. Thank you Scarlett for another wonderful read!

The Heartless Duke is the second book of the series, The Legion of Dukes. These men are soldiers and warriors who fight the Fenians for their country. When Leo, Lord Carlisle returns for his brother, Clay's wedding, he meets Miss Jane Palliser. She is the new Governess for Ara and Clay's son. He finds her quite lovely. Leo is married to his job and doesn't feel he could love a woman. Lord Carlisle finds out that Jane is really Bridgett working for the Fenians. When Bridgett is caught doing something terrible, Leo takes her prisoner. He gets part of Bridgett's story about what she is doing and why. She is too afraid to tell everything she knows as someone important to her could be killed. After talking to someone in the Home Office, he marries her. They love each other, but can they trust enough to be together? Why would he marry his enemy and who is she trying to protect? She just can't trust him. I loved Clay and Ara's story in the first book. I adore Lord Carlisle and Bridgett. This is the best new series that I have read in a long time. The Legion of Dukes are tough men who love with all their hearts. Can't wait to read the others in this series. I am very excited about it. I received this book from the author for a honest review.

A wonderful wonderful book as always by MS Scarlett Scott. Till date she hasn't dissapointed me. I loved Leo ' s n Bridget 's unusual love story. It's the story of the duke of Carlisle n Bridget, an Irish women working for home rule. I was eagerly waiting for Leo's story ever since he had made his first appearance. He is the leader of the league. He is a ruthless, emotionless man who has had a difficult childhood. He trusts too few people. The bond between clay n Leo n between lily n Leo was very emotional and heartening. Leo is our typical alpha male with demons of his own. Bridget is a strong woman who has seen a difficult childhood. She loves her brother very much and wants to save him. it was very interesting to read how Leo n Bridget fell in love with each other. They had their share of ups and downs. It was difficult for them to trust each other. The love scenes were awesome as always. Don't want to give any spoilers. It's another winner by MS Scott. I loved the book immensely. Waiting to read strathmore story

Let me first say that I am a fan of Scartlett Scott. This book though, I just can't.

He is supposed to be this hardened leader of a group of cutthroat defenders of the crown and he is easily led astray by his libido. The woman kidnaps his nephew, puts a gun to his head and all he wants to do is bang her.

Excuses are made that the gun wasn't loaded (ask that 8 year old if that made a difference to his fears, or ask his parents).

The reason behind the marriage is laughable and the story itself is unreadable.

I understand this is romance, but I like stories that are at least realistic, whiny weak heroes and selfish "banshees" of a heroine do not make a good story and this is an absolutely horrible one.

Heartless Duke is the second book in Scarlett Scott’s League of Dukes series. I loved the first book, Nobody’s Duke (it was one of my top reads of 2022), so I was very excited to continue on the series! And no surprise, I really enjoyed this one too! This has a true enemies to lovers set up with even a captor/captive situation happening!

Leo, Duke of Carlisle, is headed to his half-brother’s home for his wedding (his brother is the hero of book 1) and there he meets, and is immediately entranced with, a governess. Bridget O’Malley, is pretending to be a governess while actually planning to kidnap her charge! Bridget is a trusted member of the underground organization to gain Irish independence and when she kidnaps her charge, who happens to be Leo’s nephew, Leo gets involved since he’s the leader of a secret branch of the Home Office tasked with keeping the peace. This is what leads Leo to having Bridget locked up in his house in a sort-of house arrest.

I loved the tension and energy between these two. I really enjoyed seeing an actual enemies-to-lovers setup here and a captor/captive setup in a historical romance is always a treat! I liked how he calls her her “Banshee”, how they end up getting married, his sweet relationship with his stepmom (aka his father’s mistress who he sees as his mother), the caretaking scenes when he gets sick, and the overall chemistry and steam between the couple! I did love the first book more, but I do really enjoy this author’s writing. I did like the hero more in this one than the heroine, while I get her motivations for the kidnapping, I do think it went too far and she didn’t seem to have to make amends for her actions that much.

Whew, that was intense and wonderful and I am still reeling from this story. I love stories that intertwine families into the stories. The addition of family members and showing how they love and respect each other and will do anything for them is so wonderful to read about. This story has such a dynamic relationship with the brothers and their mother. Also, having a strong woman like Bridget starring in this story was brilliant. Unlike some stories, she never gives in even when seduced by the ultra-swoon worthy Heartless Duke.

Don’t let the tissues get too far away at the end of this story. Just saying.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

Another enthralling read in this series. Leo, Duke of Carlisle, is used to being in control and has sworn off falling in love. However, many of his attitudes are forced to change when he meets Bridget O’ Malley, a Fenian and his enemy. They have an instant attraction before Leo finds out who Bridget is and her intentions. There is quite a battle of wills between them and many tense moments. I was often wondering what would happen next and how the situation would be resolved. I’m now looking forward to the next on the series.

Strong sexual story

If reading any thing with coarse sexual language isn't your thong , then don't buy this. But if you enjoy a strong, sexual male this one is for you. We definitely read Leo's thoughts and darkness. Nothing kinky. And Bridgette learns that she has a passionate nature and he awakens it. I like stories that have a plot beyond the H and h. This has that.
I've already preordered the next book since I like Griffith and want to see more. Cullen deserves a story too.

Passion Mystery Danger

As with all of Ms Scott's books there is a mystery that begs to be solved, passion to warm the coldest of hearts any enough danger to keep you turning the pages. The characters are ones you have been introduced to in other of her works plus the addition of a few others. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book in this series and can't help but wonder if Cullen will get a story of his own. Thanks again for sharing your gift with your fans!

A trail of lies

Bridget was loyal to a fault desperate to save her brother she dared almost anything! Leo was driven to eradicate the evil Fenians and all their kind! Two very opposites who definitely shouldn't be kissing! Leo has a love hate relationship with Bridget! He knows she's the enemy yet he can't keep his hands off her! Bridget has yet to realize who to trust! It's almost too late in this dangerous game of cat and mouse! A must read!!!

Heartless Duke is book 2 in the League of Dukes series. The characters were well written and the story is the type that is difficult to put down. :) Leo’s character and story was vaguely foreshadowed in book 1. Leo and Bridget have a tangled past but watching their story unfold is pure passion. Scarlet Scott is an excellent historical fiction writer with strong attention to period details. Her books are always an enjoyable read.

When love conquers a crusty, opinionated Duke, anything is possible.
Love or lust between an Irish Fenian rebel who is for Irish home rule and the Duke who is the head of the Home Office’s semi-secret group, the League of Duke’s, who are ferreting out the spies and rebels.
How love makes all bets off and a Duke contemplating resignation as leader of the League.
Good, steamy read.

Leopold, the Duke of Carlisle, is leader of a specialized group of agents working for the crown against the Fenians, Irish rebels. Their responsible for the brutal slaying of his future sister-in-law’s late husband and its job to keep them safe from the Fenians. Leo is not having his best day’s he’s arriving at his brother’s wedding in the middle of the night to only be met by a beautiful young woman who happens to the governess to The Duke's nephew.
Bridget O'Malley a trusted member of the underground organization sent to kidnap the Duke’s nephew posing as he’s governess by day and at night she has easy access to all forms of information for the rebel cause or someone she loves will die. Leo and Bridget have vast differences in their beliefs making them to be enemies and fighting on opposite sides.
Bridget is drawn to Leo the most enigmatic man she’s ever met and she’s falling for him despite her determination not to. Leo is quite fascinated by her, she’s the one woman he can’t shake and he can’t trust her. He knows their more to her than meets the eye, he hears a slight accent he can’t quite place and a secret he means to unravel and determine who she is by any means necessary. There are too many lives at stake is she a friend or an enemy? I loved this story of the heartless duke and the fiery rebel clash in a fierce battle of wills. 5 STARS!!!I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

"Your name." He meant to ask her in the form of a question but was not very adept at polite conversation. He led his agents. He hosted depraved fetes at his townhouse. He did not speak to governesses, pay social calls, or whirl about at balls. He was a machine."
Thus the meeting of our hero, Leo, the Duke of Carlisle, leader of a secret branch of the Home Office and Bridget O'Mallery, posing as Governess, going by the name of Jane. But she is the enemy, a member of the Finians, Irish rebels who had been responsible for a murder of someone close. But he does not know that at first.
Totally taken with her beauty, her sultriness and a woman he cannot shake, he feels she is attracted to him too. But she is hiding secrets, he knows it and she is the governess which is off limits.
Amazing. That is what comes to mind as I turned the last page of this story. Leo and Bridget are both complicated and have their own demons they are battling. But family is important to both of them and as they end up dancing to their passion, how can it turn out? Drawn together but should not have been?
Scarlett Scott has written a phenomenal story with indepth characters full of strong emotions that it will have you smiling and teary eyed at the same time. She has become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to the next book in the League of Dukes in great anticipation!

He’s a relentless rake, as cruel as can be in fact totally heartless. He’s Leo the Duke of Carlisle, leader of a secret branch of the Home Office charged with keeping the peace amidst great peril and upheaval. By day, he hunts anarchists and murderers with savage intensity. By night, he rules over London’s darkest, most depraved souls.
Bridget O’Malley, a trusted member of the Fenians an underground organization to gain Irish independence. She is a on a mission & is posing as Jane Palliser governess to the young Duke of Burghley.
When Leo & ‘Jane' meet sparks fly, their attraction can't be denied, then she becomes his prisoner.
WOW what a book! Whilst this second in the series could be read on its own to fully appreciate it I’d recommend reading the first. I was totally engrossed & captivated from start to finish. The characters are extremely well portrayed. Leo is a complicated person with hidden depths but he is devoted to his close family. Bridget raised her brother Cullen & is prepared to do anything to help him. The true joy of this book was the interaction between Leo & Bridget, their verbal spats so good & entertaining & their attraction sizzled.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
