Victor Loshak #2

What Lies Beneath

Rate this book
Some secrets don’t stay buried.

Three elaborately staged victims. No clues. A public verging on panic.

FBI profiler Victor Loshak heads to Kansas City to hunt another serial killer. But something about this case is all wrong.

The three corpses lie posed. Face up. A glove laid to cover each right eye.

The victims seem to be selected at random. Suburban. Upper middle class. Squeaky clean. It doesn’t make sense.

A piece is missing from this puzzle.

If Loshak can find the missing link that connects the victims, he believes he can solve the case. The obstacles are many, however.

And the cryptic note someone left under his windshield wiper? It warns him that danger lurks all around.

They bury it, and they bury it, but it won't stay dead.

As Loshak digs deeper, uneasiness seems to creep over everything in the city. Paranoia. A sense of dread.

Everyone he encounters seems to be keeping things from him. Concealing something.

He gets a visceral sense of the lengths people will go to hide their sins. Bury them.

When the suburban veneer finally strips away, all the dark secrets come clear one by one.

But nothing can prepare Loshak for the shocking revelation this case unearths.

Because what lies beneath the surface? It changes everything.

This pulse-pounding thriller will have you holding your breath until the final page. Fans of James Patterson, John Sandford, and Lisa Regan should check out the Victor Loshak series.

E. M. Smith came by his redneck roots honestly, his barbwire tattoo dishonestly, and his sobriety slowly. Recovery isn't a sprint, according to his friends, it's a marathon. That's probably why he turned into such a fitness geek when he quit drinking.

You can call him Mason if you want to. He just uses his initials to seem professional.

Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the authors but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.

Scratch the surface, reveal the dirt

In an affluent suburb of Kansas City, a serial killer strikes. With several bodies already discovered, Agent Loshak is called out to consult on what appears, on the surface, to be just another run of the mill serial killer murder case. After he and Spinks settle in and meet the local PD, he receives a mysterious message that ultimately leads to a person who can provide possible insider perspective in the otherwise tight-lipped upper-class echelons. When even these efforts are thwarted, Loshak realizes that there may be more to this case than what is presented. As more questions arise and go unanswered, Loshak is stumped, until a survivor appears that potentially has information that will break the case wide open. What Loshak discovers will challenge not only his skills as an agent but could also recalibrate his moral compass.

What Lies Beneath is the newest in the Agent Victor Loshak series by Tim McBain and LT Vargus in collaboration with fellow author EM Smith. Picking up not too long after “Beyond Good and Evil”, Loshak and Spinks continue their unlikely partnership as they travel to Kansas City. Still acting in the capacity of consultant, Loshak is called in to assist several involved jurisdictions as they try to piece together anything that will help them catch their killer. But the profiler’s reputation precedes him, and he gains a few starry-eyed fans as well as the ire of the officer in charge. As usual, there is very little to work with as collectively, the victims all seem unrelated but Loshak knows that a common thread exists; that the victims have been chosen for a reason. Once the pieces slowly start to come together, he realizes that this case is way bigger than just one serial killer. There is a justification behind the crimes and one that Loshak is finding it increasingly harder to disavow.

Although I really miss the Darger/Loshak combination, I am really starting to like this series as well. Loshak is becoming a fairly complicated guy, and it is good to see McBain and Vargus bring a certain depth to this character that may not have been apparent in previous novels. Spinks continues to add color and comedy with his random Illuminati outbursts. If these two become a regular duo, I can’t say that I would be disappointed. As usual, the killer’s point of view is also represented, and this is one aspect of many of McBain and Vargus’ novels that I like as it allows the reader to really get into the mind of the “bad guy” so to speak. What Lies Beneath to takes this concept a step further by actually providing a background and a storyline surrounding the murderer. Once I got to this point in the story, the killer quickly stopped being the bad guy for me and simply became Dylan. Dylan’s back story and the back story of those around him took center stage and what used to be a “good guy v. bad guy” story with all the usual players became tuned on its side. I truly have never wanted to see the bad guy get away so badly than I have while reading this book.

All in all, What Lies Beneath is another great installment in this series. While I am still hoping for a Darger and Loshak reunion in the future, I would also love to see Spinks finds a way into those novels as well. It will be interesting to see what is next for the duo in future books.

I really have missed these books. Having recently read a Darger novel, I jumped over to Loshak to see how he's coping and I was not disappointed.

On the trail of an assassin who appears to be putting hits out on people, this book has a few little twists of its own. Minus Darger, Loshak finds himself partnered up with a couple of colleagues that he has to grow to like, although it also appears that one of them is already a fan! The story switches between the police and the killer, detailing what is taking place, the thought processes and the fallout from actions that are taken. The pace is even throughout and the characters as usual are well thought out and fit in nicely. There are some gory elements, although this is more concerned with the excellent reasons behind the killings and the way everything branches off. I found the book great to begin with, but after the first twist I absolutely loved it.

I'm sure I've said this before, but if you like crime fiction with great profiling and some colourful characters, you need to read a Darger or Loshak book. The extra pen / brain of E M Smith was a welcome addition to an already amazing series.

What Lies Beneath is one of the most compelling books to date by these authors. This gripping story expertly weaves a terrifying premise into a larger tapestry of moral and emotional mine fields with horrific implications.

The Violet Darger and Victor Loshak books cover topics ostensibly about serial killers and mass murderers, but they are also artfully painted against a backdrop of the paranoia of modern life so familiar to anyone living in the United States today. Those familiar with true crime will find the topics explored in this book to be frighteningly relevant.

One of the things that drew me to these authors in the first place was their ability to tackle complex issues beyond the typical scary story level of entertainment, and this book is a perfect example of that. It’s exciting and scary but it’s also something that’ll challenge your assumptions about the reality of the world we live in and what kind of person you might be be in this type of situation.

"Right" and "wrong" are things a lot of us take for granted but as this book demonstrates, the lines between them can get blurred pretty quickly.

I can't go into more detail without spoilers so I'll leave it at that. I very much enjoyed this one!

Just when you believe you know who Victor Loshak is, you are dealt a hand from left field. This latest Loshak book has him pursuing a serial killer in some upscale residential areas, along with a reporter/author/FBI consultant. Once again the authors have crafted a story filled with more twists and turns that keep their reader guessing what is coming next as the "goal posts" keep shifting. This story is a true page turner and I couldn't put it down until I had finished the final line on the last page. If you are a Loshak fan, this is a must read, if you are new to Loshak, grab this and then go back and read the previous books one you are hooked on this series.

This book is heartbreaking

First, I have lived in the area of where this takes place, so I know what the police are really like. But you just never know who is corrupt do you? This book has the "so rich I don't have to walk if I don't want to, " and then some. It's creepy that they chose Dupont suicide as part of the book. Everything about it is creepy. I'm really trying to write this review and not give anything away so you can not sleep. I'm sorry but I don't feel bad about any of the murders. I highly recommend this book because it hits home and it happens all over the world. I don't think that they have a better book out. This is the top book. I'm not sure how they are going to top this and have readers so invested.

Mysteries surround every community. But the horrors buried deep by old money, the good old boys network, and corrupt politicians threaten whether the case can be solved or whether any and all facts will be destroyed along with the victims, witnesses and any remaining evidence. There’s too much at stake to leave any one behind. The scary truth reminds us much of today’s political fiber. It’s a very good book leaving you thinking about moral judgement calls.

Great Read

I had some trouble getting all the characters sorted. I remember when the characters were listed at the beginning, giving who they were and how they were related.. The story kept me up when I should have been sleeping but I could have read more! I would like to know more about child trafficking. It sounds horrible . . .makes you wonder what's going on . . .and what can be done to stop it. If only...

Love this Series

I really enjoyed how this book unfolded. A series of murders that were laid out for the police to find is what brings Victor and his friend/writer to this small town for Victor to profile the killer. Some VERY unexpected turn of events occur, leaving Victor to make a last minute choice
which surprised me! The conclusion was startling of this page turning thrilling tale! I can’t wait for more of this series!

Meh

My least favorite Darger or Loshak book...
No particular reason other than the plot and ending, which I won't spoil.

Scum of the Earth

Loshak has to work some chilling cases, but this one is the worst. You might think that when rich white folks have enough millions, they would enjoy it and maybe even share their good fortune. Or, you might think that some could buy protection and put themselves so far above the law that they can treat other human beings like disposable fodder for their sick games. Scum.

Im a big True Crime fan and this hit the spot for me as well. I also love the dynamic of the detective and the reporter. Plus the detective character is written very well, I can see him fully in my mind.

Good light read, but plot is complicated enough to keep your attention as well. Love it.

Don't miss this worthy read

Unexpected, was what was found beneath the elegant home of the latest victim. But who would bury the children there? Seemingly unrelated suicides kept occurring and FBI profiler Loshak didn't quite know what.to make of it all. Don't miss this one. The plot only becomes thicker before resolving itself in a surprising ending.

Unbelievable

I really like these author's. They have a group of series that have different characters. I like all there different series. I like this FBI character the best. He isn't the average FBI agent. Fast paced stories with lots of twists and turns. They give him instincts that are usually real close or right on to the situation that he is dealing with. Will be reading more of this series when it comes out. Thanks for all the entertainment.

A different kind of twist

I first met Victor Loshak in the pages of a Violet Darger novel. His mysterious behavior then has colored my picture of him as a human and an FBI agent. In this novel Loshak keeps turning the cases he is involved with over and over in his mind, but the pieces don't fit. Finally, his he makes a decision that I think will forever change him

Great book

You’re following a FBI agent and a reporter on a confusing murder case where the clues, when they come, don’t seem to lead to a killer. By the time you understand who the killer is and why he kills, the case becomes even more confusing.

What lies beneath

Another great crime novel that keeps you guessing at every turn. Just when I think I’ve read “my favorite” story involving Agent Loshak, along comes a crime mystery to top the one before.

Well Victor Loshak went from one extreme in Beyond Good & Evil Book 1 to another extreme in What Lies Beneath Book 2. If you read Book 1 you will know what I'm talking about. I found myself rooting for Victor in this book, I think he is missing Violet Darger. This book had 5 stars going into the last 3 or 4 chapters and lost a star at the end. I found the ending a little anticlimatic. I miss Victor and Violet's banter and the excitement that Violet brings to a story. I'm glad Victor did what he did, but I'm torn about him making himself judge and jury. L.T., Tim and E.M. roped me into the story in the prologue and kept me guess what was going to happen next. The suspense was there, I did figure out little bits of the story, but missed the bigger problem going on. There were a couple of secondary characters that I wanted to be bad guys and involved in what was going on. In the end I felt bad for the killer and wanted him to be okay. I know L.T., Tim and E.M. have decided to take Victor and Violet in different directions, I hope they bring them back together. In my opinion this book is worth reading and is a good second book in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader's copy.

A serial killer is murdering the richest and most influential men in Mission Hills area. The killer is like smoke, slipping in and out of homes without a trace like they come in though the mere cracks. The only clue a glove, lying across the face and covering one eye.

Loshak arrives with journalist Jevon Spinks who is assigned to him while writing a book on the agent. Along with local Detectives Hank Presser and Rainie Wilson they work try and solve these murders. Other than they have been murdered by the same person there seems to be no link.

That is until someone starts leaving messages. Someone who seems to know an awful lot about the murders. Not just about the murders, but why they're being committed.

These 3 authors = a triple great book - great writing, great characters and
and great story. I’m drawn in with the beginning words of a shadow, his thoughts while slinking around. It’s downright creepy as it sets the stage for ‘What Lies Beneath’ to play out a horrific story. Loshak is on the job with a new partner to find a killer. (He has thoughts of Darger, does he miss her?) He uncovers so much more to keep pages turning from one unbelievable discovery to another and another, till the big twist at the end. I liked the end and I didn’t like it. Loshak didn’t like it either, too many loose ends. This calls for Smith, McBain and Vargas to tie up those ends with another book. I will definitely read it and I recommend this book as a must read.

This recent Loshak thriller has everything you expect from this trio of writers. Lots of juicy details keep you flipping the pages, Loshak in all his quirky glory, and I loved seeing more of Spinks in this installment. Twists and turns keep you wondering how it’ll all turn out. These guys always bring lots of reality to their gruesome thrillers. This one was as gutsy and graphic as a bunny being run over by a semi...over and over again. The main focus of this piece dealt with with a truly horrific topic. I was quite happy with the ending because true justice was served up in a not so nice way.

I've been reading Smith, Vargus, and McBain for a while now, and What Lies Beneath is easily one of my favorites. This story was absolutely gripping and had me itching to discover every new turn. It really gets to the heart of a lot of complicated issues, making it feel deeper and more thought-provoking than some of the authors' other works. All of that combined with the top-shelf writing quality and knack for intrigue make What Lies Beneath an unforgettable read.

Another great book in the series. I really like Loshak. He’s smart but not supernaturally good at solving crime or anything. These books are just fun to read & you get that Loshak is a good guy without the authors beating you over the head with it. This story dealt with human trafficking so it was relevant to current events. Looking forward to the next installment, but can’t help but hope that Loshak & Darger work together again at some point.
