One mistake, and Ford lost the only woman he ever loved.
Twenty years ago, Joey walked out of his life and into a nightmare. One that shattered her soul along with all hope of a normal life—the one she was supposed to have with Ford.
After throwing himself into his career as a marine, Ford moved to Boston and, along with a blind, former Special Forces soldier, started Second Sight, one of the most elite investigative and security companies in the world. He thought he was happy.
Until one phone call turns his world upside down.
On a humanitarian aid mission with Doctors Without Borders, Joey's taken, stolen away and forced to witness a world where women are property.
Her unique skills keep her worst nightmares from coming true, but with no possibility of escape and no one to look for her, she fears she'll soon disappear forever.
Can Ford find her before she loses all hope? Or will this be his final mission?
By Lethal Force is the fifth book in the Away From Keyboard series. Each book can be read as a complete standalone, but characters from previous books do show up in future installments.
Warning: This book contains dark themes, including references to human trafficking and sexual assault. While there is no graphic description of sexual violence, sensitive readers should be aware of these themes before purchasing.

Her Away From Keyboard series will always be her first love, because that’s where she realized the characters in her head were telling their own stories—and she was just writing them down.
By Lethal Force is book five in the Away from Keyboard series by Patricia D. Eddy. I feel like I want to write this entire review in ALL CAPS! Because that’s how amazing it is! You can totally read this as a stand alone. The time line runs parallel with the previous book, Dax’s story in Second Sight. Including this book, I have now read three of the books in this series and every one of them completely blew my mind. Just so fantastic!
Ford Lawton is retired military and now works for his friend, Dax in the security company called Second Sight. Twenty years ago, Ford thought he had his life all planned out. He was engaged to the absolute love of his life and was in the military. But then he experienced the horror of war and it was so much worse than he ever could have imagined. On a three day forced leave, he almost messed up things with Joey, his fiancée, but she calmed him down. The next morning, she was already gone when he woke up and he had to return to duty.
Josephine (Joey) Taylor is in medical school. As soon as she graduates, she and Ford will be married. She didn’t even know Ford was home when she saw him that night. She snuck out the next morning to go to school and took a shortcut that irrevocably changed her life in the worst of ways. Ford had already shipped out and was unreachable. There was no way to get a message to him. The emotional trauma of what happened is too great and Joey decides to just disappear.
Now twenty years later, Ford is working for Second Sight and Joey is working for Doctors Without Borders. They haven’t seen or spoken in all these years but their love for one another has never waned. While traveling from one place to another, the unthinkable happens again and Joey is taken. With no hope of escape, Joey is forced to accept that no one will ever find her.
When Ford gets word that the woman he never stopped loving is taken, there is nothing that will stand in the way of him finding her. And when he does, he will do whatever it takes to give them a second chance. Because his life the last twenty years without her has been empty. When he finds her, and find her he will, he’s not letting her go again.
“We’re all broken, Joey. But broken isn’t worthless. It’s beautiful.”
This book! Don’t even consider being able to read little bits at a time and putting it down. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop. It’s non-stop action. I was amazed at how deep the love between Ford and Joey was and how it sustained over all these years. And it was each other that they both needed to heal. This author is some kind of a magical person with her words. I have been in awe with every book. If you enjoy gripping suspense with your romance, this book and series are definitely for you. I loved the way it leads in to what the next book in the series will be, Fighting For Valor, due out in just a few months.
I’m going to copy and paste the warning that the author added to her blurb because she said it perfectly and I feel it is important for you to know. Warning: This book contains dark themes, including references to human trafficking and sexual assault. While there is no graphic description of sexual violence, sensitive readers should be aware of these themes before purchasing.
Pretty much my reaction the entire time I went from one chapter to the next. Patricia Eddy is a 'new to me' author, so I went into the story blind. I knew it was a thriller/suspense romance and part of a series. But a trusted book friend told me that the story would stand on its own and not be lost.
Because we know I hate breaking my rule about not reading in order.
Wow! I won the ARC and really didn't know what to expect. Okay - wait. I did expect the hero, ex-military, to go save the heroine. What I didn't expect was a fabulous story wrapped around the traumatic experiences that happen in today's world. All the characters in the book are not untouched. They see the horrors inflicted by those who yield their power to get what they want. To be honest, the author could have taken the story to a much darker, much more graphic place. Yet, she gave the reader just enough to empathize with the characters and situations without being turned off by the actions.
There was a time I devoured military thrillers from Robert Ludlum, Clive Cussler and the like. That's what this story reminded me of. Yet, added bonus - a second chance romance. If the action of the storyline didn't keep you engaged, it is cheering on the MCs to find their HEA. Both were strong both of mind and heart. I leave disappointed in many romances in this tropes because there is way to much struggle that seems OTT that the characters keep themselves apart. Ms. Eddy did not disappoint. The hero and heroine's struggles felt real and not forced.
I could go into detail about what I loved in the story - but SPOILER I am not. Trust me when I say: I finished this book and clicked on Amazon to get the rest of the series to enjoy. Patricia Eddy is a talented storyteller that kept this reader engaged in the characters and action. I'm reporting for reading and ready for more.
"I love you, buttercup. Always and forever. You’re my only. My everything. And there is nothing that will ever change that."
Book 5 in a series. It isn’t necessary to read the other books to understand this one, but it would be helpful just to understand the dynamics of the team. This is a second chance love story with an older couple (early 40’s). Told from dual POV.
Characters: Ford: Ford, is a retired Marine who started a security firm with his friend Dax (ex-military Special Forces and mentioned in other books) called Second Sight. They believe that ”Breaking the law is acceptable—if it saves someone’s life.” Twenty years ago Ford was engaged to the love of his life, but through some horrific circumstances he was parted from her. After a 5 week mission in the Middle East, Ford finally receives word about what happened to Joey. He rushes home, but Joey has cut off contact and has disappeared as she tries to heal. Ford never moved on from her and now spends his time focusing on the needs of the clients of Second Sight.
Joey: Joey is a doctor who has spent the past few years at St. Jude’s hospital helping children. Twenty years ago she was kidnapped and brutalized, ruining any chance for her and Ford to have a blissfully, happy future. Joey has struggled to deal with what happened to her and still lives in the nightmares of the past. ”When I close my eyes at night, I see the faces of the men who ruined me. Until I reach for my ring. And then…sometimes…I can see the man I used to love. The man I ran away from because I was too scared, too damaged, too afraid."
The Story: 20 years ago Joey was engaged to Ford and on her way home from his place, she was kidnapped and held in a railcar with fifteen other women. The intent was to sell them, but the FBI rescued the girls before that could happen. However, after being repeatedly violated for 5 days, Joey’s life had irrevocably changed and she wasn’t the same girl when she emerged from the railcar. Among the many things that changed in her life, she walked away from Ford and started cutting herself as a way to cope. “The mind can only take so much pain,” she says, her voice hoarse. “When I felt like I was disappearing, when I couldn’t feel anything, doing…this…let me breathe again.” “Cutting let me feel something I controlled."
Joey, now 42, still has nightmares about those 5 days she was held captive. She is a doctor and working with the Doctors Without Borders program in Turkmenistan where she once again becomes a victim of a kidnapping. When Ford finds out that Joey has been taken, he will do anything to rescue her.
My Thoughts: I did not read the blurb for this story as I had previously read three books in the Away From the Keyboard series and enjoyed them all. So I was comfortable just jumping in blind. My bad.....😬 I should have read the author’s warning. Trigger warning from author: Warning: This book contains dark themes, including references to human trafficking and sexual assault. While there is no graphic description of sexual violence, sensitive readers should be aware of these themes before purchasing.
I still would have read the book anyway, but nothing takes me to the edge of my comfort zone more than a storyline that somehow involves sex trafficking. So as I hit the 3rd page of the prologue and realized our heroine was in deep, deep trouble 😬😳😬 I was already white knuckling my kindle and my heart rate was skyrocketing.
The recurring character type in this whole series is a tortured hero. Whether that is physically, mentally, or both, each book has a character that has endured some pretty horrendous situations. In this book, Ford is relatively unscathed, but Joey is severely broken.
Joey’s sheer determination and her strength are an amazing aspect of this story. She’s a strong heroine but she also has moments of frailty. She views her scars as evidence that she is damaged, too scared to trust and too weak to deal with what happened to her. That’s what makes her character so believable and I absolutely loved her. My heart broke for all that she had to endure. 💔 We are often so much harsher on ourselves and we really need to see ourselves through the lense of someone who unconditionally loves us. In this case......enter Ford.....omg 🥰🥰 Ford has so much love for Joey and believes in her with every breath of his being. Without question he accepts everything Joey did to survive both during her captivity and out in the “real world”. No judgement. ”We’re all broken, Joey.” Holding out my hand, I wait for her to place her fingers in mine. In the light from the bedside lamp, the ring on her finger sparkles. “But broken isn’t worthless. It’s beautiful.”
This story is captivating, riveting and intense. It has non-stop action that keeps you completely glued to each page. I felt like my heart rate never really slowed down and I was flipping pages like a madwoman just to see what would happen next.
This whole series has been fantastic and each book has been completely engaging. As I said in my review with book 3, my takeaway is that there is beauty in the flaws and the scars and Joey and Ford prove that in this journey.
If you love a tortured hero/heroine and some suspense and non-stop action, don’t let this book or any in this series pass you by.
Quotes: "For the rest of my life, I’ll be…damaged. But I don’t have to be so damaged I can’t function.”
"We’ll never survive if you can’t let me share your pain."
"Survive. Fight. Find a way out."
“We both made mistakes. We’re here now. We can move on. You said you wanted to start over. Starting over implies…letting go of the past. Or at least…not letting it consume us.”
"I know…there’s nothing he could possibly do that I couldn’t come back from. My scars are my own. Made by bad men so many years ago, it feels like another lifetime. And while I’ll always remember, always be broken, with Ford, I’m who I’m supposed to be."
Every time I read a new Away From the Keyboard series book I swear it's my favorite. But, it struck me that each book released is on an equal footing with the previous books. The stories are riveting in their intensity and hard hitting fast paced action and the characters are so rich and multidimensional. What sets each book apart are the powerful underlying emotions and feelings that play out among the characters. In By Lethal Force Patricia Eddy explores regret, paralyzing fear, panic, the need for control, resilience and second chance love to name a few. Ford and Joey are "it" for each other and despite being separated for more than 20 years, their love has not abated. Making that love work after so much has happened may be not be easy thing.
Joey meets Ford and they fall in love. He proposes, and then their world falls apart. Joey is abducted and rescued and feels herself not worthy of Ford any more, so she ignores his attempts to contact her, and they both go on their ways. Joey becomes a doctor, and Ford leaves the Marines, and then their lives come full circle 20 years later when once again tragedy strikes Joey. Ford swears he will be there for her this time and so begins a journey to rescue and rebuild. This story was so compelling and riveting. It kept me reading and reading until it was done. Patricia D. Eddy writes stories of love lost and love found with so much emotion and detail. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and highly recommend it.
I read all 5 books in the Away From Keyboard series and I cannot choose one as my favourite. Every single one of them is unique and unforeseeable. I found myself drawn in By Lethal Force characters and I knew from the beginning I'll love every minute of this book. Here are some things you should know about this book: damaged but complex characters, ex- military, suspenseful, passionate, emotional and romantic. This in NOT an easy steamy romance, this IS a complicated and well balanced love story where the characters have to fight hard with themself and others for their happily ever after.
Sometimes authors and book series come along, and you feel an almost cosmic shift of connection and belonging – and that happened to me with the first Away From Keyboard novel. This is the fifth in that series, and, while it is perfect as a standalone, the characters have become friends, so reconnecting with them is part of the pleasure of reading the book. I genuinely didn’t believe Patricia Eddy could top Second Sight and Dax’s story, but I was wrong. By Lethal Force is Ford’s story – harrowing, heartbreaking, exciting, suspenseful, and ultimately satisfying. Ford and Joey are real people that come alive on the pages; Joey’s fear of people makes the reader jump back when someone approaches her unexpectedly. The time overlaps with Dax’s story, which adds a layer of context and excitement if you’ve read Second Sight too. The “lethal force” of the title is a reminder of the evil that the characters face and that Eddy’s characters will continue to fight. I hated having this book end, and I can’t wait for the next.
I read an advance copy of this book and recommend it unreservedly.
This book deserves more than 5 stars!! After an argument, Joey and Fords engagement is on the line - Joey cannot continue without Ford trusting her enough to share what is happening on deployments. The night she walks away leads to a night of torture and despair, leaving only a shell of the person she once was. Walking away is the only thing she can do. But 20 years later their paths cross once again and this time Ford is there to help save her from her captors. But can old feelings come back to the surface when Joey feels so broken? Can Ford put her back together while he saves them both? This book had me on the edge of my seat form the opening pages. It had me yelling and crying all within the same chapter. Two broken souls that rip your heart out and leave you feeling battled and bruised. With beautifully written characters and a plot that kills you then puts you back together again this was an awesome book. Patricia D. Eddy stand up and take a bow - job well done.
Reading books by this author is like watching a movie on the big screen. The scenes flow from one to another and there is enough explanation to understand the plot as the charcters relate their parts. The main characters are so strong as in the previous books of this series. They are pushed to the point of breaking and yet fight to overcome any and all diversity. Joey and Ford never stopped caring and loving one another. They gave up all hope of ever finding true love. Fate intervenes for them. I highly recommend following their story to a HEA!
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this story! I would have added more but you get the idea. This was dark, not in a graphic, gory way but emotionally. Joey and Ford both had some serious crap happen to them in the past, the mental images I gave myself were probably worse than if it was written out, who knew my brain was so dark??? The sheer evil in this world astounds me sometimes, so probably why I love these guys so much! They're doing something, sometimes just little things, but they are my tarnished, worn down, slightly grey knights. I read this through in one read, and after being up since 3:30 am, that says a lot. I had to know what happened, after 20 years is there any hope of a connection? Can they at least close the pages on the past? Needed to know what happened to Joey, and Ford and and and........so many thoughts rumbling around after this. Guess my main point is, it was amazing, emotional and heartbreaking. Couldn't ask for a better story for Ford. Will be waiting in the future for more, got to be some more stories for the guys......sigh, I hope so anyway.
Patricia D. Eddy hooks you on the first page and keeps reeling you in until the last! This book has everything you want in an action packed, suspense romance.
I hold Patricia Eddy's writing in high regard but this book left me wanting in some ways, and ended up totally satisfying me in others.
The story is about two older people (and I'm using the term older because an awful lot of romance writers think if the heroine is over 19, she's ancient, blah) who haven't seen each other in twenty years but have carried a torch for each other for that long. Ford is a former Marine who lost his love, Joey, because he couldn't trust her with his secrets, his true feelings. Joey, when they broke up was a medical school student who, the night she left Ford, was assaulted in the worst kind of way. That assault has charted her life's direction since then. She has never met anyone since that would rival Ford for her affections.
When Joey finds herself in a bad situation while working with Doctors Without Borders, Ford hears of it and decides that he cannot live with himself if he doesn't try to rescue her.
That's it for the description part of this essay... if you want to know what Ford and Joey do after that, read the book. Really. You need to read the book.
I really liked this book but I wanted MORE out of Joey and Ford. I read this book twice. Once to enjoy the story and get into the meat of it. The second time I read it because I needed to understand if I was missing something. At the beginning of the book and up until probably about a third of the way through, I didn't like Joey much. Don't get me wrong, I understood her, but I wanted her to be stronger. The only thing I could latch onto with her personality in the first part of the book was fear. I understood that fear, understood where it was coming from and the fact that she overcame it eventually. But it was there, and took over her personality for a while. I look for emotion in all the characters I enjoy, and fear was resonating with her and it wasn't until the last 2/3 of the book that I was able to begin to like her, when other emotions began to overshadow the fear.
That's how I enjoy a book. I have to understand and like the characters (and keep in mind, I can "like" a serial killer character if he/she is written well). The story must be cohesive, but the characters make it for me. Ford's character was a bit more open in my opinion and I enjoyed his portion of the story, and his personality, from the very beginning. He wasn't as one dimensional as Joey at the beginning and as she grew emotionally as a character in the book, he was able to match her emotion for emotion. I loved the last third of the book, and even cried when the three women were reunited.
I had a rough time writing a review for this book. I made the mistake, during the first reading, of comparing it to the other books in the Away From The Keyboard series. I realized about half way through that I needed to jettison the other books, and once I was done, I started to re-read it and stopped comparing it to the previously published books. Once I did that, I realized this was a very good book with different characters with different emotional needs than those in the previous books. Would I recommend it? Of course, I would always recommend Patricia Eddy's books. I haven't found one yet that wasn't to my taste. But it is because I hold her books in the highest regard that I always want her to hit the high notes, so to speak. I always want her to reach as high as she can in her stories, and as deep as she can into the hearts of her characters. This book didn't quite make it there, but even at that, this author is still better than 80% of the indie authors out there today.
I want to start by saying this was a good book, and I feel like if you read all the other books in the series before this, you have to read this (although it isn't necessary, but it's nice to find out what happens to Ford and if he finds Joey). I don't know if it was the characters for me that just didn't quite do it, or their chemistry was off a little or what, but it was still a really great book. Joey is a doctor who has been working in remote regions near Afghanistan to help the people over there and she's abducted without a trace. Ford and Joey were suppose to get married 20 years ago, and when he finds out that she's gone missing, he moves heaven and earth to go find her and save her. The author does another great job taking the reader into the characters life, like we are living it right there next to them. Joey goes through hell and is still so strong, even though she doesn't think so and Ford is a strong alpha male, who finally came to terms with his undying love for Joey, and once he gets her back, he isn't ever going to let her go. When they're in Afghanistan after rescuing Joey, they're on the run from the man who kidnapped her, trying to make sure all the team members who went over to save her are safe and will make it back to the US. In this book, Joey also meets Issad, who is working for the man who captured her, but there is something that she can't put her finger on.. he almost seems like he has a southern US accent and he is kind to her. At the end of this book, we have a great easter egg/ lead up to the next book about Jackson, and how Ryker and Dax are still very involved throughout this series!
The Away from the Keyboard romantic suspense series ranks up as one of my favorite of all time. Each book is a standalone, but I am enjoying them in order. This one had me on the edge of my seat the entire book! Ford is home for a 3 day leave, spending time with his fiancé Joey. His experiences are haunting, and it’s time to go back, so Joey quietly leaves to go and the real horror begins. Ford thinks she has just taken off, but circumstances beyond her control have happened and now 20 years later history is about to repeat itself. Ford, now working for Second Sight is sent to retrieve Joey taken from her Doctors without Borders mission. When he finds out it’s her, there is no doubt he is going to do whatever it takes to save her. But will he find her in time? Will she want to be with him? Talk about a story with real issues and a romance to make you swoon. Joey has strength beyond reproach. She has been through so much, yet she finds the courage to go on, and the compassion to help others. Ford is the one you want to come get you. He is protective, strong and stops at nothing to keep you safe. Twists and turn kept me guessing and the heat had me falling in love. Love this book, this couple and this series.
Narration continues by Aiden Snow and Grace Grant. This team is incredible, each tuning into their characters and pulling out each emotion. They enhance the story with their dual style narration, complimenting each other and giving us a memorable performance.
Ford is a part of Second Sight, working alongside Dax. His heart has been spoken for for a long time by his ex-fiancée Joey. Unfortunately a stupide mistake on his part and then a horrific incident that torn Joey apart, they went their separate ways. When Ford finds out that Joey has gone missing in a hostile country, he doesn't hesitate to drop everything and put his life on the line to bring her back home.
The one thing I love about the men and women of Second Sight and Hidden Agenda is that the second one of their own is hurting and needs them, they are there putting themselves on the line. True family.
Joey has rebuilt her life from the traumatic incident that took place and is saving lives as a doctor, going into hostile, poverty stricken environments to provide the care the population needs. Until she is taken. Even when she is taken, she remains poised, calm and graceful in the face of adversity. She does what she needs to to survive without compromising her ethics. She shows time and time again her courage, tenacity and strength.
This is quickly turning into a series I love and can't put down. Each one has been action packed, full of emotion and broken yet courageous characters who deserve the best for the sacrifices they have made. This was no exception - it certainly brought the action, kept me on the edge of seat, whilst bringing the emotion around their experiences. Really loved this story.
Once again this author floors me with her writing and characters that draw me in and won’t let go. The next instalment in the Away From Keyboard series had me on the edge of my seat and rooting for the characters throughout the story. Ford lost Joey many many years ago but she is still his one and only love and thinks about her all the time. When her sister calls Ford and tells him that she is missing, nothing will stop him from finding her and this time when he finds her, he doesn’t want to let her go. Oh man what a read with characters that seem so real and descriptions of the scenery that made me feel like I was right there, jumping off the pages, page after page. The story flowed beautifully and the characters were amazing and I LOVED Ford, especially after he admits what he didn’t do all those years apart from Joey...melted my heart and makes me want a Ford for myself. Both were “broken” in their own way but their commitment and love for each other puts the broken pieces, piece by piece, back together, one step at a time. I LOVED the no drama between them, didn’t need it with everything going on around them and it was so so so refreshing. Not only that but the suspense had me flipping the pages wanting to know what happens next and the author did not disappoint. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
I have been reading Patricia Eddy's books for years and she continually surprises me. Every time I think, "She has peaked with this book! There's no way she can top it!"....she does just that.
I remember when Ford had to back out of Evianna's case in Second Sight and have waited with baited breath for the entire story. Worth every second!
I have loved EVERY character Patricia has introduced in this series and her others, but feel a bit more connected to Ford and Joey. Being and older woman myself, I love that an author--especially such a talented author--has finally recognized that not every hot hero and heroine are still in their twenties. Ford is closing in on fifty yet he's ripped, capable, and every bit as deadly as he was during his days in the Marines. Joey, though damaged, is strong, beautiful inside and out, and ready to find the woman she was before all the hell she went through.
As always, I am left hungering for more. The story and characters will linger with me, not just because this is a great book, but because it is a great book about great PEOPLE.
Open the book and find your newest friends who prove damaged doesn't mean broken. That the hell we sometimes go through, the scars we bear, make us stronger.
As she has done with her other Away from Keyboard series books, Pateicia Eddy has created an edge-of-your seat Romance. By Lethal Force tells the story of Ford and Joey. A series of tragic moments keep them apart for twenty years. Every day, they miss each other, but each believes the other won't forgive them for the past. After Joey is kidnapped, Ford does everything to save her and remedy the mistakes of their past.
I started this book late, put it down to sleep, and picked it up the next morning to finish it a couple of hours later. I simply didn't want to put it down. The action and suspense of the story coupled with the romance and history of Joey and Ford's story was captivating. This story deals with human trafficking, PTSD, and cutting in ways that are meaningful to the story. Ford's patience with Joey makes him a superb hero, the transcendence of their love adds depth to an action story. The epilogue throws in a twist leaving this reader anticipatory for Eddy's next book.
Joey Taylor was 22 when she was grabbed off the street, brutalized and was prepared to be sold as a sex slave, before she's rescued. That was 20 years ago, and she still carries the scars and PTSD from her horrendous experience. She ran back then, from her family, friends and her fiancee. Ford Lawton is now a U.S. Marine, retired. He did what he could to win back his fiancee Joey. But, instead, he is now still single and co-founder of Second Sight, a private protection service. When he gets a call that Joey and her Doctors without Borders crew have disappeared in a isolated part of the Middle East. This time Ford is not going to fail her. What follows is a tough, terrifying story that is well paced, realistic and pulls no punches. Ford and Joey are a mature, damaged and remarkable couple. Their strengths made me stick with this haunting story. I wanted them to succeed, facing down the terrors they encounter. This is a great addition to the Away from the Keyboard collection.
By Lethal Force is book 5 in the Away from Keyboard series by Patricia Eddy, and I have loved every single book! She writes beautifully broken and flawed former military characters and this book is no exception. You read read this book alone, or in order. This story is second-chance romance for two people who went in completely opposite directions. This was a very emotional journey with thrilling suspense added to the mix, making it a listen-straight-through for me. There is emotional and physical trauma endured by both of them and just when you think it can’t possibly pull you in another direction everything comes together in only the perfect way that it can and only in the way that someone like Patricia Eddy could pull it together.
Aiden Snow is the voice of most of the books in this series and he has that perfect deep and powerful presence backed by a beautiful performance of these truly complex and wonderful characters! Grace Grant is another excellent narrator and does a great job with Joey, who is equally complex and a definite bad ass!!
I received an advanced reader copy. I am voluntarily leaving a review. Ford was a Marine and Joey was in Med school when they fell in love and got engaged. After his first deployment, he was having difficulty coming to terms with what he did and seen in combat. After Joey catches him on leave, they spend the night together and that is the last time they ever see each other. Twenty years later, Ford is contacted by her sister, Joey is working with Doctors Without Borders and is missing. Ford drops everything to go find her. Ms Edy has a real knack for really developing her characters. Her former military characters have injuries and scars and demons that are true to life and not easily overcome. Her non-military characters are also flawed and true to life. This series is wonderful and I cannot wait for the next book. A strong 4.5 star read.
The story of Ford and Joey is moving and emotional. This book is written with the Prologue of the engaged medical student and Marine. Fast forward twenty years, after a misunderstanding, lost engagement, her kidnapping by human trafficking thugs, the now Dr. is on a humanitarian aid mission with Doctors Without Borders, who is once again kidnapped. Ford, now with an investigative and security company, is on the job to locate and rescue the love of his life that he hasn’t seen in 20 years. The book is well written, however, I did find the constant tears of Joey to be a bit overwhelming. There were also other personal tragedies that wore on me somewhat but that doesn’t mean I won’t be picking up the next book by this author. There is a lot happening in this story-line. I appreciate the warning that there is sexual violence and assault
This series is my first taste of author Patricia Eddy and she is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I love her writing style and the way she connects her characters within the series while satisfying our desire for an HEA in each book. Her characters are complicated, broken, loyal, strong, imperfect and absolutely hot! This story was among other things a second chance that will have you on the edge of your seat. The narration once again was absolutely perfect. I wish I had the words to describe the way Aiden Snow and Grace Grant bring these characters to life. I Love it!! This is book five in this series with an HEA and can be read as a standalone, although it does leave you with a twist that will lead you directly to book 6! I highly recommend this book/series!!
Ford left his security case the story before to rescue his only live of over 20 years. Now we go back to their story and find out where they came from, what broke them apart and what happens now to pull them back together. This story made me cry multiple times. And swoon a bit but also doubt a bit. I can't fathom Joey having nightmares every night in a tent hospital in dangerous territory. That's on me and my sheltered life I guess. I loved this two very much. Away from the keyboards of the security company and out on the wild of Uzbekistan/Afghanistan it was a different pace and a smaller group of characters involved. More focus on the story, Joey had to tell. Abducted at 23 and kept and violated for 10 days, her demons drove her away from her fiance. And now abducted again and threatened to a impossible task.... I was in head over heels.
This was a bit of a longer book. A bit different with an older couple in their 40s but I feel like that just made what experiences they had together all the more special. I could really feel how disgusting some of the experiences Joey went through. At times I just had to take break from all the violence towards her. But she was strong and found her own way to cope and survive.... for so long. And Ford, my gosh he was so patient with her, so loving and caring. He didn’t push her but was just there for her if she needed. Situated in a war torn zone, this book constantly had you on the edge of your seat with the suspense and the danger. I just wanted Joey to have a break and be safe to breathe!
20 yrs ago Josephine aka Joey, was in medical school and engaged to marine Ford, then she is kidnapped by human traffickers and suffers...until rescued by the FBI. Ford had been deployed and was unaware of Joey’s plight until many weeks later. Calls and letters to Joey went unanswered and returned unopened. Ford never heard from her again. Now, present day, Joey is on a humanitarian mission with Doctors Without Borders when she and her team of women are kidnapped...will she survive this time around? When Ford is contacted by Joey’s sister and learns that she’s missing, he pulls out all the stops and heads to Afghanistan to search. Will Ford and his team find Joey before it’s too late? This gripping story will keep you on the edge of your seat! Looking forward to the next book!
