There’s nothing she won’t do to save the man she loves—even if failure means hanging from the gallows beside him. Life at sea comes with a number of risks, but, as far as Kara is concerned, they’re risks far more favourable than the horrors she escaped from on land a year ago.
When out-sailing an Evradian ship proves to be impossible, the crew of the Plunderer find themselves on the losing-side of a bloody battle. Slaughtering and sinking them isn’t enough for the Evradians—an example needs to be made on land if they hope to put an end to the pirate threat. As the only one to have successfully evaded capture, Kara is all that’s left to keep the man she loves, as well as the crew she calls her brothers, from hanging from the gallows in three days.
Kara finds herself back on land, all alone, faced with everything she despised and an impossible mission to take the men out of an impenetrable fort. But, a year at sea changed plenty. No longer the helpless young girl the Evradians knew her to be, their failure to account for her could very well be their undoing—and the key to their survival.
Kyra Gregory writes new adult fantasy novels filled with heart-warming found families, slow-burn romances, court intrigue, and a little bit of bloodshed. While she enjoys making her characters suffer she also enjoys writing soft moments, flourishing friendships, intimate romances, and characters who strive for home and peace. While dark at times, her books are perfect for readers who crave emotional depth and a slow build in their fantasy.
She lives on the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta and is usually spending time with her husband, son, and dog when she isn’t writing and publishing novels or jotting down ideas for her next.
I think I like this one more than the first one! We got to know Kara more and she became a stronger, more empowered character. I felt like the conflict among the crew was very realistic given Jared’s choices. Same as the first a bit slower paced but more of a plot line/story this time vs slice of life. Interesting to see where the story goes but again, no big cliff hanger thankfully so you could end here as well.
