As the fifth volume of a manga my rating is affected by the previous volumes! See my review of volume one... and my review of volume two... and my review of volume three... and my review of volume four...

On her 16th birthday, orphan Himari Momochi inherits the ancestral estate she’s never seen. Momochi House exists on the barrier between the human and spiritual realms, and Himari is meant to act as guardian between the two worlds. But on the day she moves in, she finds three handsome squatters already living in the house, and one seems to have already taken over her role!

The art surprised me in this volume by playing around with weight. There are so many darker frames and the story has gotten subtly darker as well. I feel like you can see the transition in the art and it's gorgeous! I am prone to the lighter tone of the story but if we want the tension ratcheted up then we need to let some darkness it. In any case you can see the mangaka is going about her art very deliberately in whatever way will suit the story... for example, the final frames were so stark that they became almost painful with how sharp and raw they were!!

The tension in this volume was ratcheted up so high actually that I almost can't take it! Right now I'm on tender hooks with that ending and also knowing that someone is out to cause serious problems. I really love how her school life is constantly brought into the story so that Himari's two worlds collide. I really didn't expect such real world problems to come into play and all through her friendship with Hayato.

I really love how this glimpse into Yukari's past is being used to further a rising threat in the present. Besides that I enjoyed how Yukari could be the hero for the chapter. Aoi and Himari's relationship takes a darker turn in this volume as well that fuels the problems in another chapter. These felt spot on to me. Plus the darker tone in their relationship suited the story as a whole. You certainly feel the mangaka is NOT winging it but has firm control on her story.

Kasha being brought into the story was a tad confusing. I wasn't really sure what everything meant, though I'm sure this was more foreshadowing for the future story arc. I'm totally jazzed that the preceding volumes all seemed to be built to come to this part of the story! That's exciting and I look forward to learning more about these curses. This volume was just jam packed with plot, plot, plot. In future volumes I hope this infusion of plot mixed with character relationships is kept balanced.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

BOTTOM LINE: The potential is building steam as we head into volume 6!

Volume 5 continues Shouto's storytelling excellence as we get to the point where Himari is deciding if she will admit her feelings to Aoi. At the same time, someone or something is meddling with the Ayakashi in very terrible ways. The Nue is going to learn some hard truths from demon Kasha in return for calling in a favor.

Story: Yukari's ties to the dragon god help Himari and the Nue heal springs that have been polluted. At the same time, Himari learns of Yukari's tragic life as a human. Meanwhile, the Nue and Aoi are puzzled by the source of the polluted streams (and other curses). When Aoi goes to Kasha for answers, the demon plays more of his games.

There are three arcs in this volume. The first deals with Yukari's past and healing a cursed water spirit. The middle is about Himari's school friends and a dare that goes bad. And the third involves Aoi researching curses from the first two stories.

As always, the illustration and layout work is superb - Shouto really is at the top of her game. And the gentle nature of the story (as overused as the word is, this is best described as 'lyrical') continues to be the hallmark of this particular title. The last chapter ended on quite a cliffhanger - I look forward to seeing where Shouto takes the story from here. Reviewed from an advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.

Hands down, this is my favorite Aya Shouto series to be translated. This volume sheds light on Yukari's past while setting the stage for the story to delve deeper into matters of the heart. How human is Aoi after ten years in Momochi House? It's probably something both Himari and we readers ought to be asking ourselves.

When it comes to this series, I seem to have a love/hate relationship with it. I adore the art style. Shouoto definitely knows how to draw all of the pretty anime boys. What I keep not loving is the depth of the characters. One of the things I love about reading manga, is the deep exploration we get with the characters. This one feels very surface level so far. I'm going to give it a couple more volumes to truly make up my mind about it though. It's a bit of a struggle bus for me.
That said, I loved getting to know a little more about the origins of some of the people around Aoi and Momochi. It's interesting to see their backgrounds, and that gives us some insight on why they behave the way that they do. The couple like moments in this volume were quite nice as well.

Wow. That ending was downright cruel. The rest of the manga was fun, I suppose. It just felt like a filler. I’m disappointed.

Every time I look at the Nue’s face and then look at some other guys’, I’m like “oh wow, the Nue looks funny. Oh wait. That’s not him.” It’s a terrible let down. I’m not a fan of the stereotypical “same faces” in anime/manga that occurs so much. This is why.
• You see, the Nue is super fabulous. But with the “same faces” syndrome, ALL the guys are fabulous or elegant. It really removes the fun out of it.

I checked out Vols. 1-5 from my local joint-use library and I love reading this series.

My Review...

I love the nice blending and color tones of the front cover for volume 5. It really makes Kasha stand out in an old-fashioned ayakashi era feel. He looks handsome and mysterious in that pose. Although, I am in a slight irritation and wondering what he has planned next sort of phase. I am currently in between either liking him or not as this story is progressing well. I definitely like his character though; he is nicely created and his personality is okay.

Going past the cover, I like the first couple of colored in pages of the book. Aoi in a kimono full color was nice to look at and the next page with Aoi, Yukari, and Himari fit perfectly with what happens later in the volume.

I had mixed feelings of how I thought Yukari had become an ayakashi in volume 4, but volume five was able to explain to me with his backstory and I was glad it did.

For some reason, I feel like I have heard something about the seven waterfalls and Ryujin a water dragon before, but I do not recall where though.

Anyways, Yukari's past was a shocker and I was surprised that he was a human sacrifice for Ryujin. I wasn't that surprised that Himari would vote herself to help out, but I can see how Aoi is worrying even more about her now.

I could feel Aoi's strong emotions for Himari throughout this volume. Although, it seems to me that Aoi might be fighting his feelings for Himari. I just love the scenes where Aoi gets so close to Himari that he embraces her gently and tells her to always be careful and shares his feelings of worry to her. While he slightly hints that he will protect her and that no harm will befall her.

After the fiasco with the almost cursed Ryujin and the peace restored to the waters. I was sad that Yukari's past was so lonely, but he was beautiful as a child to grown up now. I also was confused at first as to why he said that he ate human flesh. When actually, it was the compassion of the noblemen that raised him to try and protect him. I was glad that Yukari met Ryujin and became a water serpent.

I am starting to feel like loneliness is a trend that is going on throughout this series and is slowly fading away as Momochi House is filled with warmth and everyone together creating peace.

I now feel that Yukari and Himari are even closer friends now that she has an even better understanding of his past. She is slowly working her way into the hearts of others.

Throughout this volume, I can clearly read and feel Aoi's mixed feelings for Himari welling up. There are hints of jealousy and him finally noticing his inner feelings. I just remember that he is innocent before Himari arrived and these are all new feelings for him to discover.

Himari seemed to be doing well at school, but I came to be irritated by Nomoto and her friends' actions and words toward Himari. I felt that it was good that Aoi, Yukari, Ise, and the lower ayakashi to give them a fright. I not sure if their being nice was true or not near the end. But, they gave some nice advice about confessing their feelings of love to the one they like. Although, I'm glad that Hayato is still nice and caring.

The scare dare was unexpected and trouble arose. For some reason this volume, I slightly hoped for Himari and Hayato as a couple because he has a nice personality and his eyes are nice. So, I probably wouldn't mind if they had to kiss to break the curse, but reading more than it leads to their love consummated in death, I almost changed my mind. The ayakashi from the mark on Himari's hand is kind of cute and creepy looking to me.

I was happy that Kaha made another appearance and had a longer scene. Although, I am wondering which candles the Nue affected and what happened to the person whose life is part of it (one blew out, so I am assuming that that person died...?).

It surprised me that it wasn't Kasha that is causing all these problems for Himari, Aoi, and the rest. In fact, it being a human was really shocking and now I am anxious to find out who and why.

My heart went into another shock of surprise when everything started to come down peacefully, with still the matter of the curse at hand. But, Himari finally properly confessing to Aoi made me super happy and I have been waiting for Aoi's reply since the accident I love you form HImari with the box that is now a pillow for Kasha.

Seeing Aoi's face change into a genuine smile made my heart beat and my own smile upon my face. I almost thought that it would be mutual feelings after so many hints throughout five volumes. Sadly, it ended with Aoi saying, " Himari." "I'm Sorry." "I can't see you in that way." I had the same confused expression as Himari did on the last page of the volume. Now that their relationship seems to be progressing in a way with a disappointing reply to her feelings.

I was not disappointed with this volume and I got a lot more than I expected from reading it. I am even more curious on what will happen next with the relationship between Aoi and HImari and how this end with effect their friendship. I am still shipping them together though (AoixHimari), while they try to get past these obstacles of their love. In addition, I wonder how Aoi intended to lift the curse off of Hayato and Himari. I felt Aoi's worry of jealousy as he checked Himari's hand to make sure that the curse was still there and that she hasn't kiss Hayato yet.

I am really looking forward to the next couple of volumes to read. I would recomend reading this series to anyone who seems interested and I love this series.

[1.5 gwiazdki]

2.5 out of 5

For some reason I just found myself not really enjoying this volume even though I’ve loved it in the past. I put this down three or four times and took two days to finish it, even with it being a normal manga length. I’ll continue the series in a few days and hopefully will enjoy the rest of my read.

I don't relish the thought of reviewing just one volume in a manga series. The story continues and one volume isn't complete without having read those that come before and after it. Having said that, I certainly wouldn't have purchased any of the volumes if I wasn't extremely interested in holding on to this particular tale.

This is the first manga series I've splurged on. I love the artistry and attention to detail. The plot reached out and trapped me. Fantasy, adventure, mystery and young love are packed into one powerful punch of easy reading. The main character shows sincerity and determination in every action she takes. Her love interest exists between two worlds. She's looking for a way to free him. Along the journey, they help the supporting characters solve other problems.

I'd recommend this manga to anyone aged 12 and up who enjoys Japanese mythology and sweet romance. I'm not sure how many parents read this kind of material so I hope that's helpful. I also suggest doing a bit of research on the historical and cultural topics this manga touches on. I always enjoy learning about different cultures and manga is one way to have fun with it. So I'd recommend this series to anyone who loves learning about Japanese culture and mythology. I've read up to Volume Six and can't wait to get my hands on Volume Seven. I hope you'll give it a chance!

In Volume 5 of The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Himari's classmates urge her to go on a "scare dare" to a place with a mysterious laughing rock. Himari's new friend Hiyato is also urged to come. Aoi, however, doesn't like this plan.

"Scare dares" (though I have yet to hear it called that) seem to be popular in a lot of shoujo manga I have read. But I really felt this particular trip was creepier than ones I have read in other series. I also loved that you get to see more emotion from Aoi in this volume, though Hayato still comes across as your simple, boy-next-door type, who happens to be quite popular now that his bad luck seems to have disappeared. The tension between the three characters, however, is what really makes this volume fun!

Hayato Hidaka and Himari Momochi has been cursed with the fate of a human because no one has noticed the seal on the "laughing rock" from the oh so told tale of the love mystic. Aoi is against the idea of the scare dare on Renge Pass, and he gets very much so upset whenever he finds out they went and got cursed on Renri Pass.

Aoi forces himself to go and get help from the high level Demon Lord Ayakashi, Kasha. Aoi finds out that a human is involved and finds out that Kasha is very irritated that a human is playing around in his territory.

Himari Momochi confesses her love to Aoi and he looks very happy to hear that she loves him, but instantly tells her with a smile, "I'm sorry. I can't see you that way Himari." Such a sad day for our beloved Himari.

This would definitely be a 4 star if it wasn't so frustrating. Himari made the same stupid mistakes again, as if she hasn't learned anything in the past 5 novels. I don't know how Aoi has the brain capacity to live with her, but he does and has thankfully told her that it wasn't okay to keep doing things he told her not to (although she probably did.) The curse with the kiss thing was so stupid and Aoi going through such lengths to stop it from occurring is too much of an overreaction. One of the only highlights of this book as Yukari's past, which was much more touching than anything else in this book.

Chissà lui come l’avrà presa …🤔

With Yukari's shocking revelation in the last volume, I was wondering what this volume would bring, and yes, we do get his backstory here. In a way, I was relieved to know it wasn't what I thought, but in another way, it was heart-breaking to learn how he was brought up, as a spy to infiltrate a court, and his betrayal thereafter. When all of them go to cool off in the summer to a hidden spring tended by Yukari, we also come across the dragon who is like a parent to him, and who has been affected by a curse. The dragon's reasoning for giving him a life as an ayakashi was also quite heartening; I also loved the exploration of loneliness in humans as well as ayakashi, as well the differences in relationships.

The other arc was about Himari's high school class doing a test of courage thing on a local haunted hill, but Himari inadvertently getting caught up in a curse along with Hidaka. At first, I thought it might be an over-the-top way to introduce a love triangle (especially since both Aoi and Himari have realized their feelings for the other), but the mystery of the curse turns out into a significant plot point that ties into something more threatening. I was a bit surprised by Himari taking initiative, too, and so far the relationships in this have been taking interesting turns.

I almost thought we lost Zushi to the spirit void with his conspicuous absence last volume, so it’s nice to see him back. A little beefcake bathing in this volume... The water dragons are my favorite bit ‘natch! I’m still not vibing with Aya Shouoto’s art. The series isn’t high on action, but there are far too many panels with characters in repose. But, I like the direction and I enjoy the spirit stories each volume. That big ghost rock is sure threw in a monkeywrench!

Well that was a volume! Loved learning more about Yukari's past and how he became a water spirit and why he came to momochi house. Such a sad back story but so much brighter of a future. The storyline was so well done. Plus the artwork was fabulous.
Then we get the test of courage with Himari and her jealous classmates. It can never be simple and of course there is a curse. The last scene was good!

It's great to binge-read manga like these...until you run out of them. I know there are more volumes published, but I have been borrowing from the library and this is the last one I had. It left on a pretty good cliffhanger.
I like that we are seeing more of Himari's school life, it is good that not everything revolves around the Demons/Ayakashi.
This was another good volume in the series and I do look forward to continuing it.

This volume has so much emotional moments with some background on one of the characters and the artstyle ugh!!! I love it so much!!!!!!!! There are some creepy/horror moments in this volume but I dont think it is anything that young teens cannot handle. There also was a lot of plot that was involved this time especially towards the end 😨need to continue on ASAP. Because of these points, I have to rate this volume a 4-4.5 out of 5 stars I'm really excited to read more from this series!

Alright, this volume gets an extra star for that awesome chapter about the water dragon. That was phenomenal. The romance drama, though, still needs work.

However, the thing that's got me most interested is Aoi's past...or Nue's past and how Kasha is involved. Because there's something going on there that's not so simple as rival ayakashi lords.

This series has 16 volumes.
