AUGH the tension was so high in this one!

If this was that intense I’m not sure the climax will live up to this!! It sort of feels like the series is wrapping up, but I get that vibe from all the volumes.

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

As the 9th volume of a manga my rating is affected by the previous volumes! See my review of volume one... and my review of volume two... and my review of volume three... and my review of volume four... and my review of volume five... and my review of volume six... and my review of volume seven... and my review of volume eight...

On her 16th birthday, orphan Himari Momochi inherits the ancestral estate she’s never seen. Momochi House exists on the barrier between the human and spiritual realms, and Himari is meant to act as guardian between the two worlds. But on the day she moves in, she finds three handsome squatters already living in the house, and one seems to have already taken over her role!

This mangaka continues to wow me... each volume is so, so powerful! The art is unexpected and gorgeous and I love that she NEVER forgets to give our characters the happy moments that make life worth living!! With the end of Aoi's family past arc we get such a moment and Himari really shines... she contrasts the ayakashi selfishness and self-centeredness with such selflessness!!

We get a glimpse of how Ise has changed from knowing the human Aoi and boy is it beautiful even as it fostered misunderstanding!! I LOVE when story does this!! It is so authentic to life and I just want to see more and more moments like this, where we see the effects of relationships in our life. GAH!! And I was touched how Himari's persistence with his family sure paid off with them... Her concern with EVERYONE is her super power!

The tension is super special in this volume as the romance is taken to the next level... We were engaged totally with Aoi's family arc and we are totally stoked with how that concluded... And now we get to understand Aoi's motivations with regard to staying in Momochi House as the omamori-sama... This was so unexpected even though both Himari and the reader were given clues in earlier volumes.

Kasha is a welcome edition to the volume as his wager pays out and he presses the nue further... It always seems to me that he is helping while also pressing buttons, I can't wait to learn more about Kasha as we proceed in the series... My favorite moment of the volume's plot is the ayakashi fireworks!! This mangaka so excels at taking the story places where I'm NOT thinking as a writer at all but TOTALLY as a bystander wishing to ayakashi everywhere that I could be IN the story...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

BOTTOM LINE: GO GO Aoi and Himari!! Where will this story take us NEXT?!

Re-Read Review (February 20th, 2023):

There were plenty of twists surrounding Aoi's past, yet the pivotal one is so well-crafted. I'd give too much away if I wrote beyond the word misdirection. My points below about this volume potentially being the final one still hold true. Even with the promise of Hakka and Kasha looming in the background, Shouoto ties up the loose ends from this arc and establishes the romance readers who have stuck with this series up to this point have been waiting to see blossom. It's a nice change of pace from the last few volumes having cliffhangers.

Family plays a key role in this arc. Beyond Momochi House serving as a found family of sorts, getting more depth on Himari and Aoi's past shows how intertwined they are and how they've taken what was important to their pasts with them into the present. How their names are read in Japanese, in particular, is a nice touch. Props to the translation team for handling that well. Having some Japanese classes under my belt also helped me understand the significance more. Shouoto likely planned that from the start.

First Read Review (October 19th, 2017):

Now Aoi's past arc is officially laid to rest. I spoke too soon for the last volume, but that's all right. The ending worked really well and we got a twist that I didn't even seen coming. It's nice to see Aoi back in his human form and the surprise party was super sweet and adorable.

SPEAKING OF THE PARTY, HOW IT ENDED! GIRL, YAS! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT CONFESSION FOR TWO YEARS! WOOT WOOT WOOT WOOT!

*ahem*

Shouoto managed to wrap up this volume well enough that it could have been the last one if she wanted it to be, but we're not done yet! I'm excited to see where this series will go next, with its beautiful art, good story arcs, pretty male characters (though Himari's cute herself), and fanboy factor.

This series continues to progress in a very positive way for me. I am really enjoying what they are doing with Aoi's character. The progression with Aoi and the Nue is a beautiful tug of war that I love watching unfold. I am very much looking forward to what will happen coming up.

This was a long and anticipated wait for this book. This story line is about how Himari finds out about Aoi's past to fix him beyond the state of the Nue. Himari and Ise are successful and Aoi returns to his normal state. Himari urges Aoi to see his family for one last time before he loses the chance and Aoi reassures her that it is okay and he thanks her.

Himari has decided to throw a welcome back party for Aoi since he has returned to his normal self. Everyone in Momochi House helps her out and she gets to learn about her parents from Aoi and Yukari. Himari is overwhelmed with joy and sweetness as she holds that information dear to her heart. Himari compares herself to a sunflower and is happy to mention that she would like to be cheerful like the sunflower.

Aoi has helped light the Ayakashi fireworks and has admitted to Himari that he loves her and proves it to her by giving her a sweet kiss beneath the fireworks. How sweet.

Ise looks so cool. 😍

This volume was so soft, that ending with the kiss OMG what will happen in the next chapter? And what about the cute guy at Himari’s school? Of course the main couple is Aoi and Himari- but what about himmm??? 😭

“…The kanji for Himawari or “sun-flower”… can be read as Aoi, or “Mallow that faces the sun”?
A flower that faces the sun with Aoi… that girl said.. she wanted live her life like a sun-flower.”
You could say it’s fate.

Review of volumes 3-9 (review of volumes 1-2 here)

We knew I enjoyed this. For a series I picked up only because it was pretty and I found 13 volumes together on the library shelf, I have been happily surprised by how much I've enjoyed this. And I said as much in my review of the first to books, but also acknowledged that it was a bumpy start to the story, with little explanation or lead-up.

Once the set-up is done, however, it really gets going. The characters remain endearing, and the books cover not just the backstory of the magical house inhabitants, but also show Himari interacting with classmates who would have been Aoi's as well...if he wasn't magically bound to Momochi House and magically erased from everyone's memory.

There are still some odd spots--the demon antagonist, Kasha, pops in at seemingly random moments and messes around with people, for little purpose I can find. (He does have an obsession with Aoi-as-the-Nue and proving that...he's more ayakashi/spirit than human, I guess? He's enigmatic and frustrating to read about because it's not obvious that he's the main antagonist, or even that he has a plan for something.)

The story keeps going with a good mix of focus on side characters, both human and ayakashi, and advancing the main plot: Himari's love for Aoi and her determination to set him free from being the Nue, allowing him to leave the house and rejoin human society.

(Aoi, for his part, doesn't seem to have an opinion on this.) (Very curious.)

And while I love Aoi--he is designed for maximum unthreatening teenage sweetness--in the past few books, he's actually been one of the weaker characters, story-wise. He doesn't take much initiative and is mainly content to let Himari organize things and pursue her goals.

Now as volume 9 finishes, we finally reach a spoiler that we all knew was coming. Himari's already confessed her love, Aoi is sweet, so finally . F I N A L L Y

It's a good point for that to happen, really. This is a 16-book series that has kept the story going without any real dead/super slow spots, nor has anything been drawn out too long. This even happening as we begin volume 10 means there's a good amount of time left for a relationship to develop. And maybe Aoi will start being a bit more active. PLEASE.

I was able to check out volumes 6-10 from my local Joint-Use library before the new Year of 2019. I was looking forward to continuing with this series.
I was shocked to find out that Aoi's sister was a twin. But, I felt a slight irritation and disappointment that the twin was actually a leaser Yokai that took over the life that should've been the real Aoi's. Although, I did come to terms with it and I felt bad that the ayakashi ended up being extinguished by kasha. Thankfully the real Aoi wasn't dead, but he was erased/forgotten by his family. It was suc my a tearful and heartfelt moment that Aoi's dad still somehow remembers him because the name Aoi lingered for some reason to him. I hoped that Aoi could've been with his family, however, I came to accept and be satiated on that he choose to move on with his life after accepting his past. In the end he still wanted a family and got a new one instead. I'm so glad everything wrapped up nicely and they celebration at the end was cute. I fangirled and was so happy to have Aoi's final confession reply honestly to himari as an ending. This was a part in the series that everyone secretly hoped and wished for. I was happy to find out more about Himari's past and her parents.

This one was so good! We get more into the family and Aoi is back!!! and the ending!!! AH!! <3
But more drama ahead for sure. (We also learn why it is so import to Aoi to protect Himari) (OH! and we learn more about Himari's name- 'light of great distance')

I had to keep the book until I did my review so I could write down a few things that hit my heart.
"But Aoi tried to hide it and wouldn't tell me anything." "Boys often hide the truth to make themselves look stronger."(p. 120).

"'Ise did you know the Kanji for Himawari, or 'sunflower' can be read as Aoi, or 'Mallow' that faces the sun?' 'I knew that.'
'A flower that faces the fun with Aoi, that girl said she wanted to live her life like a sunflower.
You could say it's fate.
Oh dear have I said something dreadfully human?'"(p. 148-149).

"Himari, or 'a light of great distance'...'May your light extend over great distances' In a diary your parents wrote the meaning of your name.
...I'm protecting the light your name is based on and you've been protecting me all this time. Thank you Himari"(p. 150-154).

Aoi's family arc gets closure in this volume, as we see how the 'Aoi' of his family was created. The theme emerging in this series is about the co-existence of ayakashi alongside humans, instead of the former disappearing from the neglect of the latter, and this book nails that well. Aoi's life with his family was difficult, and you can't really blame him for forgetting that past, but it is also about him letting go of it, and overcoming it. Himari having brought back his memories at the cost of her own treasure box was pretty much expected since she loves him, but Yukari helps her recover some of it by telling her a bit about her family's history that they found at Momochi House. While it doesn't exactly give the whole picture, it gives us enough clues, and more insight into Aoi's bonds to the house, and why he, as a child, took it upon himself to be the Nue. Later, we get sweet moments between them when she organizes a welcome back (since he can now transform back to his human form) party where they have a feast, plus some special fireworks! Himari's pledge to free him from the house becomes stronger and while I still can't get where Kasha fits in all this, I can't wait to see where this story takes us!

Adorable! it is the best word i can use to describe the relationship between Aoi chan and Himari chan. Their love story is like all the other great anime couples of all manga history you want them to get together and they have to go through so much before you can ever see their happily ever after which sucks in and of itself. Aoi who is basically a demon in a human boys body is adorable all ways around and is a good anime crush to have ( i know i do) and you hope from when you start this series that he is able to have the love interest every protagonist male lead deserves and when i read this series i can see that it is going in the right direction. Lets just hope that while the story continues that the love between Aoi and Himari continues to blossom and endure.

This last volume was cute but really underwhelming. I enjoyed the added information about the leading female character which I needed more info on but I just felt like it was just a filler in between the last volume to this one which is adorable but felt like it was too cutesy you know? Anyway the artstyle is still adorable and has a ton of unique details especially the fireworks scene (if you've read you know what I am talking about. If you haven't look forward to the scene if you like fireworks/maybe dragons??) But other than those points I really enjoyed this volume as well and I recommend it for people of all ages who like cute demon stories. Because of these points, I have to give this volume a 4 out of 5 stars.

In Volume 9 of The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Himari and Ise learn the meaning behind the mysterious message that was left at Momochi House at the end of Volume 8. Himari also learns more about her own family.

This volume was definitely an emotional rollercoaster, both sad and sweet at various times. But I definitely like how it portrays human relationships with ayakashi--and not just in a romantic sense. I also really like how the author plays with names and kanji characters. Definitely one of my favorite volumes of the series!

I'm just going to say, that the relationship between Himari and Aoi is getting trickier chapter by chapter.
This was a volume full of discoveries and sacrifices and let's just not mention the feels and the wonderful-insert sarcastic voice here- cliffhanger that I'm sure that left more than one reader with wide eyes and a dropped jaw.

For some reason, I feel that some aspects expressed in this volume are still quite misleading and I hope that my suspicions won't be spot on in volume 10.

So many feels jam packed into one volume. We finally get the conclusion of Aoi's background story. And some insight into Himari's parents along with her true name. All coming together to finally give me the scene between Aoi and Himari I have been waiting 9 volumes for. I cannot wait to see how these two grow along with everyone in Momochi House. Hoping one day Himari can lead Aoi on the path back to being human.

I feel like a lot of the background of Aoi is explained and explored. It very interesting and has a lot of heart. We get even some caring history between the characters. The end was really sweet and I wasn't expecting that but it makes the next volume even more interesting.

I do hope we continue to break from the formulaic they tell her not to do something, she does it, and then needs to be rescued.

The best Aya Shouoto series. The other licensed series seem to fall apart in the narrative, but I love this series. Aoi and Himari are endearing and compelling characters and I love the artwork. This volume completes Himari's quest to return Aoi's past and bring/turn Aoi (trapped as the Nue) back to himself.

The thrilling conclusion of the hunt for Aoi's past. This was great! Kasha got to play an actual villain...we get some closure on a couple of things...we find out about Himari's parents...and they find a (convenient) way to retroactively explain why Aoi likes Himari so much.

This series has 16 volumes.

The story has been a little slow in many ways, but the last two Volumes (8 -9) have been more interesting in connecting Aoi, Himari, and everyone together. I appreciate that the story isn't always cheery, but I'd be hard pressed to sum up the story in any meaningful way and that annoys me.

Oh my, that cover art. The arc ends in sweetness overload! But, it is a trial getting there. Aoi’s past is laid bare. Himari’s sacrifice last volume gets returned with interest. But damn that Aoi is alway running hot and cold...
