She publishes under two names in Japanese, that spell the same but are written with different characters. - 硝音あや: for shōjo manga - しょうおとあや: for BL manga
On her 16th birthday, orphan Himari Momochi inherits the ancestral estate she’s never seen. Momochi House exists on the barrier between the human and spiritual realms, and Himari is meant to act as guardian between the two worlds. But on the day she moves in, she finds three handsome squatters already living in the house, and one seems to have already taken over her role!
I have to start with the smart, smart plot!! I LOVED how now we are exploring what it means to be the Omamori-sama... We think we understand what it means to be one with the Nue... but this volume throws a bomb in that and we come out the otherside with some pretty ominous conclusions for Aoi. The masked spirit was a really great villain and yet also makes me feel so sad for him... I LOVE that dichotomy.
The dream sequences were very intriguing and I think the art really shines in this area. The battle sequences were not as dreamy this time as the dark nature of the nue companionship is shown through the art. There wasn't really forward movement with Aoi and Himari's relationship so much as a companionship that is shown through the simple frames they share. For the first time we see Momochi House more for the character it is rather than a creepy and beautiful setting.
The authenticity that grips us by the throat is the fact that if this master and shikigami of a year can have such a powerful bond... what will happen to Himari and Aoi? Ise and Yukari and Zushi and the other ayakashi that have gotten close to Aoi... what of them?! This fear has come from 10 previous volumes of authenticity that has sucked us in and made us care!!
The connection between this previous nue and Aoi creates this incredible tension! Since the entire volume is about this previous nue as Aoi comes up against a problem and as he works through those difficulties more and more problems crop up. At one point you are as shocked as Himari at what happens!! We see that in the next volume we'll probably learn about Amane and his shikigami... and we are dying to get a glimpse at the possible end for Aoi at the same time...!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art
Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. It has not influenced my opinions.

With the introduction of the Dark Nue, Shouoto doesn't hold anything back in a climatic volume that has some of her best art and material of the series so far. As a reader, I now know how far Aoi is willing to go to protect his bond with Himari, and a glimpse into the past offers a great view of a nue and shikigami relationship that took a turn. I was engrossed in the battle and how Shouoto built multiple reveals. Writing this review now has me thinking about how the series ends. Where will Aoi's humanity go from here?
First Read Review (August 3rd, 2018):
Oops! It took me almost a year to get to the next two volumes. But when Viz is one step behind the Japanese release schedule, it's bound to happen.
Anyways, this story arc is fantastically dark. The masked spirit is an interesting new character to focus on, especially since post Aoi and Himari confessing their feelings opened a window to future conflicts not regarding them. Shouoto isn't as merciful to some of her characters this time, and Hakka isn't just comedy fodder like I was worried he'd be. He's a useful shikigami whose powers may come in handy for future events.
Onto the next one! I'm excited to see what happens next. Hopefully we'll get to see some more pretty spreads like this:
This series continues to progress in a very positive way for me. I am really enjoying what they are doing with Aoi's character. The progression with Aoi and the Nue is a beautiful tug of war that I love watching unfold. I am very much looking forward to what will happen coming up. We are really starting to come into a lot more knowledge about Momochi House as well, and I am HERE FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t think the lucid dream element of Himari’s part of this arc is emphasized as much as it should have been. It could have been a more interesting angle to tap. The opening pages have a kind of inception vibe. The idea that Momochi house maintains a memory (and physical history) from The Nue and their shikigami of the past creates an interesting new challenge for Aoi and his internal conflict between obedience to his role and his freedom to choose love. There are lots of amazing looking panels in this volume and some great opportunities for Aya Shouoto and her assistants to show off those beautiful character designs with all of the splash pages. I still think the action bits are fairly staid, but the heavy use of blacks creates some engaging contrasts between old and new Nue.
We are learning more about the Nue and the history with the Momochi house. Its so interesting! Each Nue apparently is different, I originally thought maybe the same Nue would connect with different humans. The lore seems really deep and right now I feel like we have a lot to figure out in 5 volumes.
Will Aoi get out and have a HEA? What will that mean for his spirts bonded to him? Where is the bad guy spirt? How will they defeat him? What does the revelation about how far from human Aoi feels play towards the conclusion of this story?
The thing that is annoying but not taking points off for... if you LOVE HIM, why are you hitting him when he is showing you affection and attention? Its such an odd Shoujo troupe
After a long and tricky battle with the dark nue, Aoi has figured out a better way to defeat the dark nue since the first shikigami of the dark nue has appeared. Thanks to Aoi, Himari, and Hakka they were able to peacefully defeat the soul less dark nue. The first Shikigami of the dark nue learned that his hatred and despair was what fueled the dark nue and once the incense burner was broken the evil was purged from the dark nue's body and the lesser yokai that was the previous Nue entered the Dark Nue's Vessel and he comforted his first Shikigami and asked him why couldn't he just let him rest in peace to which the first Shikigami cried.
Holy cow! Another Nue shows up calling Aoi an imposter. And Himari is impacted by the darkness that the new/old Nue brought with him. I like the little guy in the episode who summons Himari a couple times. And the ending! And Aoi's revelations! ah. What is going happen going forward? I'm a bit worried how the story will go. Interesting how the guardian of the gate is now a (uh shikagami?I can't remember the exact word) that is crazy too. And should be a bit more wildness to come. I look forward with apprehension to this story.
Well that was a rollercoaster of emotions. Making me think Aoi had died, my heart just stopped. Also feeling bad for someone who literally just tried to kill him. Damn all because he missed the Nue before him.

Did a massive re-read/catch up with this entire series. Beautiful artwork and the story was just as good as I remember it (and it kept me up until 2 in the morning so that's always a good thing...)

This book was really interesting and I enjoyed the romance. I think Himari has started to grow on me..and I'm starting to like her bravery and kindness instead of focusing on her more reckless aspects.
There's another house guardian, which shouldn't be possible, and spells big trouble. You also get a little more background about how the guardians work, but it ends in more questions.
I LOVE this series so much! Aoi and Himari are so cute. I can’t handle their adorableness. But man, this one got dark and intense. For a moment, I was really shocked.
