As soon as I read the title of this novel, I knew that this was an adaption of Perry Mason's Case of the Dangerous Dowager, by Erle Stanley Gardner. And what an excellent adaption it is. My only complaint is that Prabhudayal is portrayed like Holcomb from those novels, adamant and idiot, which he is not. But I guess being only second novel in Sunil series, Prabhudayal's character hadn't fully formed in SMP's mind. But the story is very good and mystery of excellent. Keeps you guessing. You easily miss the very vital clue, so easily. It's given at least three times and you miss it completely. What I don't understand is why did Ramakant had to be a club owner, he could easily have been a junior reporter for that matter a detective itself like Paul Drake. A detective friend is more easily acceptable than a club owner who sends his employees on detective errands. Anyways. The adaption is as usual very good and the book is most recommended, what less, it's just read for Sunil series fans!
Sunil ke pass kaalavati nam ki virdha ati hai jo apni poti ki juan khelne ki lat mein likhe 7000 rs ke pronote ko muralidhar aur dinanath se hasil karne ke liye yacht par bhejti hai isse pahle ki deepa ka pati ravindra use apne irade se hasil kare Fir.. Sunil series ka dusra novel bahut hi dilchasp aur shandar hai Apne chhote se sanskaran mein faltu bataon aur fujul varana se bacha gya hai Yehi vajah hai purane novels ki padne ki Apne Pichhle novel se ek lambi uchhal hai standard mein AUR Maja ata agar pura novel jahaz par hi khatam hota . Par fir bhi Yeh shandar pathniye hai
An extremely wealthy, aged lady called Kalavati approaches Sunil Ckahravarty, crime reporter and part time detective, to help her bail out her grand daughter Deepa. Deepa, who is married to a man called Ravindra, has an addiction for gambling. The addiction has left her indebted to the tune of Rs. 7,000 (a staggering sum in the mid 60s, whent he novel was written).
The problem is, Deepa has signed an IoU in favour of casino owner Murli. Her husband Ravindra, who is out to get a divorce, intends to use the IoU as evidence in court to establish that she is unfit to be a wife and mother and thereby get custody of their only child. Kalavati requests Sunil to get buy the IoU without Deepa knowing about it, so that she can teach her granddaughter a lesson.
As it happens, the casino is owned by Murli and his partner Dinanath. Relations between the two are strained and Dinanath is out to break the partnership at the first available opportunity. After an abortive attempt at buying the IoU, during which Murali is thrown out by Dinanath, the later approaches him to help break the partnership, an offer Sunil turns down.
Sunil returns to the casino to have a second shot at getting the IoU. Things go out of hand when Murli is found dead in cabin and there is enough reason to suspect all the characters involved. In trying to protect Deepa, Sunil ends up becoming one of the prime suspects. Can he get to the bottom of it before his nemesis, the incorruptible Inspector Prabhudayal nails him?
Samudra Mein Khoon, only the second novel authored by S.M. Pathak- way back in 1964- is an intriguing mystery, but not suspenseful enough. The surprises, twists and turns that would become his hallmark are conspicuous by their absence. Nonetheless, this is an excellent work given that it was penned by a young man of 24, still finding his feet in the world of crime fiction.
To sum it up: this is a good novel in its own right, but by no means a great work.
