FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE BELOVED USA TODAY BESTSELLING MYSTIC NOTCH SERIES…
Discovering the 300-year-old skeleton of shipping tycoon Jedediah Biddeford in the ballroom wall is a big old hassle for Josie Waters, owner of the Oyster Cove Guesthouse. Especially when Biddeford’s descendants turn up, certain that a family legend about treasure buried nearby must be true.
Josie is too busy dreaming up the perfect cake for the Oyster Cove’s 250th anniversary celebration to worry about the Biddeford family – plus half the town – digging up her yard... until one of her guests is murdered in the guesthouse garden.
With worries that her guesthouse will get a reputation for being the kind of place you only leave in a body bag, Josie must put her detective skills to work to find the killer. Lucky for her, Nero and Marlowe and their gang of cat sleuths are also on the case.
From the old wharf, to the town common, to the guesthouse itself with its many nooks and crannies, the cats are sure to sniff out the killer… but can they help Josie stop the person behind the mysterious murder before they strike again?
A fantastic page-turner from a bestselling author, purrfeect for fans of Agatha Christie, Adele Abbott, cat lovers and everyone in between!
Readers absolutely love the Oyster Cove Guesthouse series!
USA Today bestselling author, Leighann Dobbs, discovered her passion for writing after a twenty year career as a software engineer. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband Bruce, their trusty Chihuahua mix Mojo and beautiful rescue cat, Kitty.
Her book "Dead Wrong" won the "Best Mystery Romance" award at the 2014 Indie Romance Convention.
Her book "Ghostly Paws" was the 2015 Chanticleer Mystery & Mayhem First Place category winner in the Animal Mystery category.
Thank goodness the people of Oyster Cove have Nero and Marlowe, because without these feline sleuths all the wrong people would be arrested for murder! Nero and Marlowe are the resident cats (ahem, owners) of the Oyster Cove Guesthouse, and when yet another of the guests is murdered the intrepid cats and their band of ragtag friends are on the case. Which is just as well, as the local sheriff has no clue, and their owner (ahem, slave) is too stupid to figure out the clues without a little help.
This is the second in the Oyster Cove Guesthouse Mystery series, and it's just as good as the first. Reading this book I couldn't get the smile off my face, but why would I want to? A good, fun, quick read that all lovers of cozy mysteries (and cats!) will enjoy.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was cute, cozy, and catatastic! Leighann Dobbs knows how to create the perfect comfy environment for a cozy mystery. This book checked off all my cozy mystery boxes: quaint Setting✔️ quirky characters✔️ compelling Mystery✔️ adorable animals✔️ Nero and Marlowe were paws down my favorite characters in the story. Even though I’m still not sure what to think about the cats talking to one another, I liked how smart and savvy they were. Josie, Lily, and the gang were all very likable I just wish there were a tiny bit more character development, and maybe a little more eccentricity. The mystery was fun even if it was a little convenient. This dysfunctional rude family is at the guest house and their ancestors bones are found in the walls of the house. Is there a curse? Is there a treasure? Soon everyone is digging for the treasure and then one of the family members ends up dead. And thank goodness Nero, Marlowe, and friends were on the case leading Josie in the right direction. The cats were definitely smarter than the humans in this book, especially the bumbling local sheriff. Josie was also sometimes a little more concerned about baking the perfect Bundt cake rather than the fact that people were dropping Dead at her inn. Also I have to add in that this dysfunctional families business was creating cheese sculptures, is this a real thing? I need to know! This was a quick cozy read perfect for a lazy summer afternoon.
*** Big thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***
Yes, you are seeing double today with a two for one review special. A Whisker in the Dark and A Purrfect Alibi by Leighann Dobbs are books two and three of the cozy The Oyster Cove Guesthouse series and since I read them together from my catch up pile I thought the reviews would pretty much mirror one another so in the interest of me not typing it all twice and you reading it twice I’m doing both in one go.
The Oyster Cove Guesthouse series is one that has a slight twist to the normal cozy formula of a sleuthing amatuer with it’s lead, Josie Waters, sharing the stories point of view with two sleuthing kitties who get to share their voices and also help solve the mystery. The formula is still the same though in which each book has an all new mystery to solve so they can be read as a standalone if choosing to do so.
In A Twist in the Tail we meet Josie Waters who had wanted to completely start over in life after her divorce and get away from her ex-husband. Moving from Ohio to Maine Josie purchased the Oyster Cove Guesthouse, a Victorian mansion turned into a bed and breakfast. After solving (with some kitty help) one mystery Josie has a couple more in books two and three now.
Being one that loves different of course I seek out these types of book that bend the mold of genre norms and being a sucker for cute critters I adored the antics of the resident felines as they help their clueless human (their words not mine) solve a crime. I actually like Josie quite a bit too and don’t think she’s as clueless as her pets seem to think and have plenty of laughs along the way not only due to the felines but some creative secondary characters. So I definitely do recommend checking out this lovely cozy series.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Josie Waters, owner of Oyster Cove Guesthouse was startled when her odd job man called her to the area being renovated. But she was shocked to see the skeleton in the wall he’d just uncovered. It turned out to be Jedediah Biddeford and his remains were around 300 years old. But the strange part of the story was his descendants were currently enjoying the guesthouse’s facilities and were immediately sure there was treasure buried somewhere.
After a night of guests and town residents using shovels to dig for treasure, the discovery of a body in the pond was the start of an investigation where the sheriff, along with Josie, Millie and Rose, and the cats Nero and Marlowe tried to unearth the killer. The two cats enlisted the gang of local cats – the combination of skills should find answers. But was Nero able to make Josie understand the clues? Would they discover who killed Bob?
A Whisker in the Dark is the 2nd in The Oyster Cove Guesthouse series by Leighann Dobbs and is a fun and entertaining romp with a group of investigative cats, some ditzy humans and plenty of obscure clues to keep the reader guessing. Josie’s baking skills were lacking with many a burnt offering, and my constant wish to nudge her back to the kitchen instead of being side-tracked 😊 Recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Well after reading this book, one thing is clear–humans are TERRIBLE at solving mysteries! Cats are the real detectives!! Do yourself a big favor if you are a fan of cute and cozy mysteries and check this book out!
The wrong people would certainly be arrested for murder if not for Nero and Marlowe (detective in training), a pair of felines who not only live at Oyster Cove guest house, they solve murders there! And I’ll just say, Oyster Cove might be a dangerous guest house to stay at. Murders and skeletons galore at that house!
The local sheriff is a bit bumbling when it comes to the skeleton found in the walls, so thankfully Nero and Marlowe are willing to help out, with some assistance from their human frontman, Josie. When a family happens to be visiting the very home where their ancestor’s skeleton is found, they know it is the sign that his treasure is buried on the grounds of the guest house. Frankly, I was shocked she let them dig up the grounds at all, though it was begrudgingly!
When the second body is found after the guests and townsfolk show up for an all-night treasure hunt, it becomes clear there is a murderer on the loose! Nero has Marlowe for help, but he employs a gang of other cats to help as well. It might sound weird to have chapters narrated by the cats talking to eachother, but that was all part of the cozy charm!!!
I couldn’t NOT grin while reading this book (something that was probably quite odd to the passengers on the train with me yesterday)! With tons of cute moments and obscure clues, cozy mystery fans will LOVE this book!
Thank you to Bookouture for my copy. Opinions are my own.
I am not writing any concrete review for this one, just few chosen quotes from the book, hope it won't be too spoilery. I admit the book was not too deep, not enough meat on the bone and mystery was easy enough to solve but I still enjoyed it greatly only because of 2 feline friends...
Again I was fortunate enough to read this early via Netgalley.
Sometimes one has to let others think things were one way, even when you knew the real truth. Like the fact that that Josie thought she was in control of the guesthouse simple because Millie has sold her the property, for example. Silly humans.
O how I missed these two crazies, Nero and Marlowe - "Do you think we've been too soft on her?"
Nero thought about it for a second. There was a fine line between creating a bond with your human and spoiling them to the point where they thought they were in control. "I've been taking her seat every night in the chair she loves to sit in in the parlor. You know, the overstuffed comfy one that shows off the black hairs I shed?"
"Yeah, and I've been lying on her keyboard when she wants to type, then sticking my tail in her face when she tries to move me."
"And we've been going into the dining room when the guests are in there eating, just like she asked us not to."
Marlowe and Nero - super detectives....
"Too bad the humans will never realize the key role we played in helping them find the killer," Nero said as they trotted past tents on their was to the bait wharf.
Resident mansion cats Nero and Marlowe are ready to pounce on the action again in this second book in Leighann Dobb's engaging series.
Josie Waters has done a fantastic job getting her guesthouse, the Oyster Cove, ready for its 250th anniversary. She has a lot of plans, including designing the perfect cake. She is sidelined more than one way, however. The current guests are all part of one family. There is a matriarch and her adult children, and none of them are likable, not to Josie, not even to one another.
During preparation, a skeleton is found in the walls. It is determined that it is one of the town's descendants. The body found not only had a history, but was supposed to have buried a fortune. Everyone in town, including the guest family, starts digging up the grounds looking for the fortune.
Josie is more than disenchanted that the beautiful grounds are being dug up. However, this pales in comparison to the fact that one of the guests turns up dead. Quite naturally, all of the bickering family members are suspects. For Josie, she is determined to solve this murder, while all the time wondering how two guests have died there in a short period of time. along with the discovered skeleton. Hoping to dissuade a bad reputation for the guesthouse, Josie gets to work.
Josie need not worry. As before, the ever-wise cats Nero and Marlowe are up to the task. Josie begins to see that they are leaving hints. During the previous situation, she didn't want to pay much attention to them. After all, they are cats. What Josie doesn't know is that they talk to one another and consistently leave clues for her to follow.
What a fun story! I have already enjoyed the first book in this series, A Twist in the Tail, and I have already downloaded A Purrfect Alibi, for review.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
I am in book " love" with this series! Something about Nero and Marlowe (and the other feline detectives) makes me grin just thinking about these books! The main human character, Josie, is relatable and fun. I loved the Mystic Notch series, by the same author, and wasn't sure how this would compare, however it has "charmed me"! Millie, Rose, Seth and all the quirky townspeople make the mystery entertaining, funny and cozy!
When a dysfunctional cheese sculpting family business takes over the guesthouse for a family meeting, , chaos and murder gear up. The cats and their human counterparts are determined justice will be served - along with possibly discovering the treasure a hidden map has revealed. Problem is the skeleton that is found in a guesthouse wall, with the old map, is a victim of murder and is around 300 years old. However, when a greedy family member is found dead after a night of treasure hunting, the mystery takes a modern turn.
I enjoyed the well written mystery, witty human and feline dialogue (oh, does Ms. Dobbs know cats!), the beautiful seaside setting and lovely descriptions of the guesthouse. Makes me want to pack up and visit!
I can't wait for the next adventure with the crew!
I received an ARC, from NetGalley, for a fair and honest review of this book.
I love being immersed in the world of this series and being a cat lover, I adore Nero and Marlowe and their cat gang. A Whisker in the Dark is very funny and it's a perfect read if you don't want anything too serious but would still like a little mystery. Even though this is book 2 of a series, I think it would be just fine as a standalone. However, I highly recommend reading them in order, so you get the full picture of the guesthouse as well as Josie. The books tie together nicely as well and only leave a tiny bit of a cliffhanger, although there wasn't much of one in this book but just enough to leave you wanting more.
There are also recipes in the back which is fun, and it was a nice quick read as well. I didn't guess the ending, but it may be easier to guess for the readers who play detective as they go. I am so glad I found this lovely cozy series and I'm already reading book 3 because I can't tear myself away. Highly recommend to all the cat lovers and cozy mystery fans!
I'm really loving this Oyster Cove Guesthouse series, from Josie the incredibly bad at cooking guest house owner, to her mum and best friend show seem pride them selves on being amateur detectives , to the assorted people in town who are starting to become familiar to me.
Oh and I can't not mention on a list of things I love about this book, Nero and Marlowe, two of the smartest cats I've ever seen, who along with the other others in the Cove, really are the brains behind any murder investigation and give a great insight into cat thoughts and behaviours.
Watching Nero and Marlowe try to communicate key info to Josie is incredibly sweet and funny, and I'm sure that if I had my own cat, I would be wondering just what sort of a double life it was leading.
However I wasn't keen on the guests at the guesthouse this week, all from the same family, whose ancestors used to own the property. There is an ancient curse and rumours of buried treasure which leads to people starting to wonder if a ghost really can murder a living person!
The Biddeford family were horrible, loads of infighting between them and seemed like they all had it in for each other. Despite not being keen on cheese, I was very curious about their cheese sculpting business, as I had no idea such a thing even existed, nor why you would want one!!
I had even less clue than the useless town detective about who the murderer was, I just enjoyed seeing how it all would pan out. I am really enjoying this authors writing style, it drew me in, and gave me a really quick to read and highly enjoyable story. I can't wait to see who gets killed next and why!
Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
It is so nice to be back at the Oyster Bay Guest house with Josie, her mum Rose and her partner in crime solving Millie. Also I mustn’t forget the crime solving cats Nero and Marlowe!
The family of Jedediah Biddeford, the original owner of the Oyster Bay Guest house, are staying at the guest house for the town’s celebrations. To call them dysfunctional is an understatement, they all seem to hate each other.
The renovations to the guest house are going as planned until the bones of Jedediah Biddeford are found in one of the walls! Jedediah’s family believe the family legend that he brought home treasure and set about looking for it, along with the rest of Oyster Bay.
One of the family turns up dead and suspicion falls on Flora, the world’s worst maid, it’s up to Josie, Nero and Marlowe to find the real culprit.
This is the second in the series but can easily be read as a stand-alone without missing feeling like you’ve missed any of the story. I would still recommend reading the first A Twist In The Tail just because it’s such an enjoyable book.
I am absolutely loving this cosy mystery series! I’ve been having a bit of a reading slump lately, I can’t tell you how much this cheered me up.
A Whisker In The Dark is a humorous and quirky read which features cat detectives Nero and Marlowe with their little gang of feline helpers. I loved the way that the relationship is developing between them and their human Josie, as she’s starting to understand them a bit more when they’re pointing her in the direction of clues.
I saw a few complaints about the first book saying it wasn’t a believable story line and frankly I think they’ve missed the point of these novels, they’re fun and a great way of escaping reality for a few hours.
A Whisker In The Dark is a fast paced and fun cosy mystery with likeable sleuths with plenty of twists and turns that makes it such great read.
Luckily Josie Waters has friends who stop by to lend a hand in the kitchen. Otherwise the guests at her bed and breakfast would be treated to her culinary misadventures., And the word of mouth would kill the venture before she got everything renovated. And speaking of killing, the word of mouth about the bodies certainly won't help its reputation. Still, with the resident felines, Nero and Marlowe, stepping up and providing the clues to solving the latest murder. Her guests now all belong to one family, and that family used to own the house where the BB is located. Is there a connection between them and the skeleton found in the walls? Enjoyable mystery with a touch of humor.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a cute addition to the series. Just like in the last book, I found myself giggling at the cat's commentary on the humans, and also about the case. I'm enjoying these cozy mysteries. They are the perfect escape from heavier reading.
Ms. Dobbs has another addition to her Oyster Cove Guesthouse cozy mystery series and it is wonderful! Her writing flows evenly which make it an enjoyable read. The characters are believable and interesting. And I especially like the cats, which, as we all know, run our lives. If you like a beautiful setting in Maine, great friends and family, very helpful cats, a little potential romance and a plot with some twists and turns, then you may want to read this book ASAP!
While this was a pretty good read, these could use more of a paranormal touch to give it more of an edge. We don’t find out anything about the skeleton in the wall except his name. I do like that our MC and male soon to be love interest hasn’t developed one of those super quick romances! If you enjoy sleuthing cats and witty, nosy, crime solving women, this is for you.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Boy, it is a jolly good thing Josie has the assistance of her two very smart and savvy cats, Nero and Marlowe, and their coterie of town cats including handsome Harry, the Maine Coon. With the way she finds dead bodies, if her skill as a sleuth matched her skill in the kitchen, there would be a lot of innocent people languishing in jail, including herself. Thank Bast, she has the cat gang to solve the murders and she is beginning to appreciate their abilities. She just cannot tell anyone. In the two stories, it always seems a bit odd someone so pathetic in a kitchen would run a B & B, especially one noted for fine cuisine prior to her arrival. One can hope she improves before she burns down the building. It is but a small quibble since the human characters are likeable and the mysteries are interesting. It is, however, without a doubt, the cats who rock these stories. The dialogue is always fun. Like the rest of us kitties, they understand human frailty but love the two legged creatures in spite of it- or perhaps because of it. Humans are really so needy. One shudders to think how they would get on without our guidance. Oh yes, the murder of one of the members of a family who create cheese sculptures is good but we all know, the readers are going to pick up the book to follow the exploits of Nero and Marlowe et al. As they should... Five purrs and two paws up. Looking forward to #3.
A Whisker in the Dark is Book 2 in the Oyster Cove Guesthouse Cozy Mystery Series.
I loved that the story line was about a 300 year old mystery intertwined with a current mystery. There is a treasure map, cheese sculpting, and lots of suspects. Lets not forget the beautiful coastal setting of Oyster Cove and not to mention a the town's 250 year celebration festival.
I LOVE this new series!!!!! I am a huge cat lover and I love that the cats have dialogue with each other. Marlowe and Nero and their little street gang of pawsome detectives make this book truly loveable and such a joy to read. The author knows her cats and describes them perfectly in appearance and language.
The main character, Josie, is relatable, likeable, and fun. All of the secondary characters are anything but secondary because they each bring so much to the story and the mystery.
The story is an extremely well written mystery with humans and cats both on the search for the killer.
The author crafts a mystery with twists and turns that leave the reader guessing until the end.
The discovery of Jedediah Biddeford’s 300-year-old skeleton behind a wall in Josie’s Oyster Cove Guesthouse is the beginning of a new mystery. Josie’s cats, Nero and Marlowe are on the case. The author kept me intrigued as I read this book. I could not put it down. I highly recommend this book and this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and have pre-ordered this book.
The cats are meowing again, in that eery way. Yes, another dead body… MUCH to Josie’s despair. It turns out to be old though, centuries old, so investigating this death will be impossible. It does set other things in motion: a treasure hunt. And then one of the guests is found dead… This is the last thing Josie needs…
I loved the first book in this series and I was glad Dobbs was able to maintain that high level. The kind of book that makes you wiggle with excitement. So much fun! I continued to love Nero’s POV. Oh, how superior he is! Lots of humor in this story. And WHAT a finale! I was on the edge of my seat! I loveloveloved it!
Nero (the most superior cat) has something to say: “I have been put in charge of the guesthouse, even though Josie thinks she’s bought it, but it’s MY responsibility. Mine and Marlowe’s, she’s my protégé. We have been trying for weeks to notify Josie of the dead body in the wall, but does she listen? That silly human. She keeps on thinking she owns us. As if a cat can be OWNED. But it seems the bones are old, really old, so this death doesn’t warrant a feline investigation. Our skills are much-needed though for the new case! Josie needs me - okay, US - to help her solve it. It’s quite a trick to point Josie toward clues; she’s such a slow learner. Sometimes we have to take drastic action just to make her understand. Humans just lack common sense, they are just not that advanced. And why can’t she see that Mike’s perfect for her? But she IS practical and that’s good.
And of course this book was good. I was in it! I am the best cat detective and this is the best cat cozy! So just listen to me, the superior cat detective, and buy this book!”
A Whisker in the Dark is the second book in The Oyster Cove Guesthouse series. I recommend reading A Twist in the Tail before starting this latest tale. Josie Waters needed a new start after her divorce and purchased the guesthouse from Millie Sullivan even though she cannot cook (plus cannot keep the books and lacks marketing knowledge). Josie’s cooking skills have not improved despite having Millie’s recipes (she really needs to invest in a timer too). I enjoy Leighann Dobbs relaxed writing style and the fact that the story progresses at a zippy pace (which makes for an easy to read story). I enjoy the sections told from the cat’s perspective. They are intelligent and perceptive felines who are working to train Josie. The cat’s sniff out clues that they share with the humans. It is cute that there is a network of cat’s around town who help to solve the mysteries. The modern whodunit has multiple suspects (the whole Biddeford clan) and misdirection. Flora, Josie’s maid who prefers to watch television to cleaning, is at the top of the suspect list. Millie has known Flora for decades and knows she would not commit murder. But they need solid proof for Sheriff Seth Chamberlain. Solving the mystery is child’s play, but readers will enjoy following the characters as they work to expose the truth. We are left to wonder, though, about what really happened to Jedidiah Biddeford and is there a treasure. We will have to wait for A Purrfect Alibi to get answers. A Whisker in the Dark is a lighthearted caper with quirky characters, zany antics, and madcap humor. A Whisker in the Dark has old bones, hidden treasure, friendly felines, bickering Biddeford’s, burnt bread, and three nosey parkers.
My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of Leighann Dobbs’ ‘A Whisker in the Dark’ in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second in her Oyster Cove Guesthouse series of cosy mysteries. Dobbs has quite an extensive body of work including a number featuring feline characters. I am definitely adding her to my list of authors whose books I turn to for comfort reading.
During the renovations of the Oyster Cove Guesthouse a 300-year old skeleton is discovered in a cavity wall. It is believed to be Jedediah Biddeford who legend says buried a treasure nearby. As it happens members of the Biddeford family are staying at the Guesthouse for the 250 anniversary celebrations for Oyster Cove. Overnight members of the family along with local residents are digging up the grounds in search of buried treasure. Then one of the guests is found murdered.
New owner Josie is concerned that the guesthouse will get a bad reputation and decides to investigate. Unknown to her the two cats that she inherited, Marlow and Nero, are also on the case. They round up their gang of local cats to assist.
This was a delightfully fluffy mystery including its clowder of feline sleuths. I already have the first in the series, ‘A Twist in the Tail’, lined up and look forward to reading the next one, ‘A Purrfect Alibi, coming out in September.
If you love reading great cosy murder mysteries, look no further! This is a highly entertaining, well written and enthralling story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading from start to finish. It is the first book that I’ve read by this author but I’ll certainly be looking out for more by her in future, including the first book in this series.
The Oyster Cove Guesthouse is being renovated by its owner Josie Waters and she certainly hadn’t anticipated discovering a skeleton hidden in a bedroom wall! As the remains are suspected of being more than 300 years old she didn’t expect any further trouble but she’d no counted on the descendants of the victim arriving absolutely convinced that there are family treasures buried nearby. As the family and locals endeavour to discover these treasures, the guest house grounds are being dug up and someone is murdered. This sets off another murder mystery for Josie and her cats, Nero and Marlowe, to help solve!
This is a great read, packed with humour, intrigued and potential killers. I can’t wait to read more from this exceptionally talented author and highly recommend you give her books a read, too!
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley, and this is my honest review after choosing to read it – and absolutely loving doing so!
It’s great to be back at the Oyster Cove Guesthouse where we meet up again with Josie and some other characters from the previous book and of course with our feline friends who honestly are the real stars of the show.
It’s great to see that the cats have a circle of friends who all help to solve the murder cases. They really think like people and where would the police be without the cats? Right, nowhere near the solution by far! Maybe the police should add more cats to their force? 😉 🙂
The author has painted the picture perfectly : cats are superior and humans should be glad to even be allowed in their neighbourhood and of course to wait on them. 🙂 This adds some funny moments.
If you would ask me who my favourite character is, I would say Flora. She can always put a smile on my face.
This second book is yet again a very entertaining one and has everything a cozy mystery should have. 5 stars.
Thank you, Leighann Dobbs, Bookouture and Netgalley.
This is the second book in the Oyster Cove Guesthouse Mysteries and I must have to admit this series is becoming a favorite. Leighann Dobbs has woven her magic in creating characters, both human and cat, that brings them to life. They feel like old friends that you could sit and visit with day or night. Or furry friends you want to spoil with love and treats. As Josie continues the remodeling of the guest house, a 300 yr old skeleton falls out of the wall. Did he really bring back a treasure from England ? Did old Jed kill his ancestor for finding and stealing his treasure? Or did a here and now person kill Bob? Now if Josie can only master baking for her guests. And learn to communicate with the real rulers of the guest house, Nero and Marlowe, her world might not be so unsettled. Or would it?
Absolutely fascinating story. Finding a very old skeleton is intriguing especially when it’s famous. This second book is just as enjoyable if possible, even better. I won a copy to my delight.
Oyster Cove is about to have their 250 anniversary celebration. Everyone's excited and gearing up for it. Although Josie, the owner of the Oyster Cove Guesthouse, isn't much of a cook, she's trying to find just the right sweet bread recipe for her display table at the celebration. The Biddeford family, who have a cheese-sculpture business, are staying at the Guesthouse when the handyman discovers the 300 year old skeleton of Jedediah Biddeford in one of the walls while renovating the west wing of the mansion.
The discovery sends everyone on a crazy hunt for the treasure Jedediah supposedly hid somewhere on the property, since it used to be his. Josie doesn't have time to join in with the Biddefords and others who are digging all over the grounds of the Guesthouse trying to find nonexistent treasure, until one of the Biddefords turn up dead. Then she, her mom and Millie have to prove that Flora, the Guesthouse's maid (and a great-grandma) isn't the killer.
This is the second in this new cozy mystery series and a lot of the same characters from the first book make an appearance--Josie's mom, Millie--the former owner of the Guesthouse ,Ed--the handyman, Mike--the former hunky handyman who's the new building inspector, the sheriff, and of course Nero, Marlowe and the rest of the cats.
I like Josie, but she really needs to use some common sense while learning to bake--I kept yelling at her to use a timer!! The sheriff is batting 0-2 since he again picked the wrong person as the guilty party. Thank goodness for Nero and Marlowe because the mystery couldn't have been solved without them.
This cozy mystery series with cats who are detectives is a good escape. I like that the author includes recipes at the end of the book
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of the book. My review is voluntary and all thoughts expressed are my own.
A Whisker In The Dark is the second book in a new cozy mystery series by Leighann Dobbs. Released 31st July 2019 by Bookouture, it's 233 pages and available in paperback, ebook, and audio formats.
This is a fun series, the coziest of cozies, with a guesthouse setting, a frazzled owner trying to keep it all afloat, and a crew of anthropomorphic cats who secretly think they're in charge. As with many series in the genre, the language is clean, the murder is off-scene and the slow-developing romantic interest is chaste. There are even some bonus family recipes at the end of the book.
The author is adept with characterizations and dialogue. It's a fast and easy read and will appeal to fans of the genre. It would make a good book club selection or summer read. I didn't try any of the recipes in the back of the book, but the author says in the afterword that they're from her family cookbook.
For Kindle Unlimited subscribers; this title, as well as the much of the author's oeuvre is available in the KU subscription to borrow and download for free.
The denouement isn't a shocker, but it's a fun ride for all that.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I first picked up A Whisker In The Dark I had only recently finished the first book in the series. I have read Leighann Dobbs before and like her stories which are usually very cute.
A Whisker In The Dark was ok. I certainly didn't want to put it down and never pick it up again but I wasn't rushing to finish it either. It took me a little over a month to read which is insanely slow for me.
At the Oyster Cove Guest House a skeleton is found in the wall while construction is being done. This story line is never resolved except for saying who the body is assumed to be. The second mystery in the book is who killed one of the guests. He is an adult staying there with his mother and siblings. Although it was explained who they all were I didn't really care who was who because I wasn't drawn to any of those characters so all I found myself wondering was: was it a family member or was it one of the other characters? The reason ended up being not that interesting and not to big a mystery.
All that being said I really enjoyed the other main characters in this book who are the characters who will continue in this series. Oh, and I love a good book with cats :)
Another good read. Not fantastic but good. A well thought out plot that could have used a bit of the paranormal to give it an edge or a bit more into how the skeleton ended up in the wall. Did the butler do it? The characters are good but the real stars are the cats. Terrific! She's trying hard to get her baking to the standards set by Millie but no-one seems to want her offering and now with the discovery of the skeleton it appears that it will go untested. However as the skeleton seems to be an ancestor of the family staying at her B&B there is a great interest in the treasure he supposedly buried. A treasure that has most of the town turning up with shovels to dig for. Including her guests. However the mad craze seems to have halted with the body of one of her guests being found in the pond. Was it the ghost of his ancestor or a more corporeal being that killed him? Can the cats lead her to find the real killer?
In this second installment of the Oyster Cove Guesthouse series, the skeleton of the original owner is found in the wall of the house as repairs are being made. Shortly after one of his descendants is found murdered as he searches for the long rumored family treasure, could it be the rumored curse that goes along with the treasure? That’s what Josie, Nero, Marlow, and the gang plan to find out.
I liked the first entry in this series, but found this one to be far more enjoyable. Perhaps it was Nero and Marlow, but it is definitely a series that is evolving and getting stronger with each book. a purrrfect addition to your Summer reading list.
