From the author of Secret Lives of Second “a can’t-put-it-down novel . . . for every woman who’s had to mend a broken heart and get even” (Redbook). Newly separated from her lawyer husband, Caroline James heads to the spa for a makeover and a massage, looking for a tonic to her battered pride. Instead she encounters Eleanor Hampton, the ex-wife of her spouse’s law partner, a woman so bitter she makes Medea look like Anne of Green Gables. Watch your back, Eleanor tells her. You won’t believe the stuff they’ve pulled. When Eleanor turns up suspiciously dead in her hot tub, Caroline opens the Pandora’s Box of documents the vengeful socialite has sent as proof of the firm’s unscrupulous divorce tactics. Between fighting her divorce proceedings, raising two children, and mending her broken heart, Caroline sleuths her way through upscale La Jolla, California, to unravel the truth. For the first time in a long time, she feels truly alive, if only she can stay that way . . . “I loved it!” —Janet Evanovich
Caroline James, 40-something wife of a very successful lawyer, finds her husband no longer loves her and he wants out of their marriage. She is devastated, as are her two teenagers. An acquaintance, Eleanor Hampton, the ex-wife of one of the law firm's partners, warns her that she will get screwed on a settlement as the firm will help her husband hide money as they did with her divorce. Eleanor tells her she has proof of this and will send it to Caroline so she can see for herself. And then Eleanor is found dead in her hot tub, a supposed suicide, the victim of pills and an expensive bottle of wine. A box of papers arrives at Caroline's home and Caroline tries to read them but finds the information confusing. A neighbor takes Caroline to hear David Sanchez, a speaker on selling short, and Caroline hopes she can convince this financial wizard to read the papers. At first, Caroline and David don't hit it off but she finally gets him to review the papers as she becomes more and more convinced that Eleanor Hampton was murdered by her husband. Caroline gets into deeper and deeper trouble as she tries to unearth more information to prove her suspicions.
Absolutely one of the best books I've read!! It's very funny in at least half of the book, but very interesting and serious as to the protagonist following clues to the mystery she was investigating. I loved, loved, loved this book!! And highly recommend it!!
