New Americana #4

Hart's Hollow Farm

Rate this book
For some folks in small-town Georgia, Hart's Hollow farm has seen better days. But for the Hart family matriarch, it's a home worth fighting for . . .

From the moment Kristen Daniels arrives at Hart's Hollow, the place speaks to her soul. So when seventy-three-year-old Emmy Hart asks Kristen to help return the farm to its former glory, Kristen accepts--despite her fears about getting involved with Emmy--or the two kids in Emmy's care. Then there's the matter of Emmy's ruggedly handsome grandson, who stirs feelings Kristen believed were long gone . . .

When Mitch Hart left home at age eighteen, he thought he'd kicked the red dust off his boots forever. But he's haunted by his violent upbringing and the loss of the sister he couldn't save. Now he's determined to see his orphaned niece and nephew settled in a better life. Emmy's ideas about saving the farm only convince Mitch that his grandmother is as crazy as everyone in town suspects. Everyone except the beauty helping her sow the land. Something about Kristen's spirit has Mitch sticking around--and wondering if he's gone a little crazy himself. Because suddenly he's hoping he might just find happiness in the very place he left behind . . .

This book has some cringe-worthy cliches:
- Technophobia surrounding cell phones and youth.
- A character with a vague well-paying 'city' job who can conveniently take a leave and has enough savings to make sure that the other characters never actually feel the full ramifications of poverty.
- A romantic and dramatic look at the effects of trauma that moves the plot forward without grappling with the need for the characters to seek mental health support (plz, I hope Kristen went to therapy before bringing another child into the world).
- Conventionally attractive, white, gendered, and don't forget 'slender,' romantic leads.
- The notion that family members should be forgiven for poor choices because they were doing their best (ie. Emmy enabling her son's abuse was in itself a form of child abuse).
- PG sexuality that refers to sexual arousal as 'warmth in the belly' repeatedly because we can't even mention genitals indirectly!

BUT, overall this is a charming story with a healthy romantic relationship at its core, a sincere look at the ravages of mental decline, an example of the benefits of multi-generational, communal living, and a portrait of the adoption of agritourism ventures by small farms to ensure their continued survival.

This is a touching story. It is why Janet Dailey is one of the best. There were times in the story I actually had tears. The story of life is so true. The heartache of horrible childhoods, the trying to make things better for your family and the love throughout the story is in this wonderful book. I really wished there was a movie made from this story. It would be a keeper just like this book.

Small southern town romance between a grieving heroine and a hero unhappy with having to return home due to what his family’s farm represents for him. Matriarch teetering between two worlds: past and present and refusing to let go of what’s hers. This book was heavier than I’d expected. Felt like more focus went into making things complicated and heavy initially but it worked out in the end. I got it. Enjoyed it more than I expected.

It’s a lovely story on grit and fighting for what you believe in. Kristen is afraid of building attachment as she has lost her daughter and is still grieving. Mitch hates returning to the farm as it held bad memories of his childhood. Emmy his grandmother is fighting for her land and she is confused between the past and present and is taking care of her 2 grandchildren.

There are lots of emotions involved and it is a very heartfelt and enjoyable book for me. I enjoyed the slow relationship between Kristen and Mitch.

Hart’s Hollow Farm: The New Americana Series Book 4 is by Janet Dailey. This book brings to life the feelings and emotions of what America really means. America was built by families who set out to build a new nation for their own families. Sometimes those families were related by blood and sometimes by choice. Janet takes those standards they set and brings them to life in this book which takes place on a small farm in a small community in the United States.
Kristen Daniels had come to Hart Hollow Farm to take a job. She had been out of a job and money for days and really needed this job. The farm was outside a small farming community and gave her a place to hide for a while, which she needed. She had been searching for somewhere or something all her life as she went through social services and group homes. She thought she had it when she had Anna; but she lost her daughter when she was five and had closed up emotionally. She needed the hard work on a farm to keep her from thinking of the past. Miss Emmy’s farm seemed like a good place to be now.
Mitch Hart arrived at the farm the same day. He had come back to convince his aunt that the farm was being taken by the state to build a road and there was nothing she could do about it. He wanted to get her settled somewhere along with his niece and nephew she was raising. Without Emmy, they would be best off in a foster home. He just had to convince everyone involved that this was best.
Mitch didn’t count on a beautiful lady or two feisty kids getting in the way of his decision. Emmy convinced Kristen to stay and help raise corn in one field as well as other crops. All were designed to convince the Department of Transportation to move the highway anywhere else. Will anyone listen to a little old lady who is developing Alzheimer’s?

This was a nice story about a woman who had suffered a terrible loss and found herself trying to escape from her painful memories by hiding in a life of drifting from one farm job to another. Kristin answers a help wanted ad placed by Emmy, an elderly lady trying to keep a Georgia farm running on her own as well as caring for her two grandchildren. Hesitant at first, she takes the job. She struggles with the lure of family and getting too attached to something she feels she can ever open herself to again. Emmy’s grandson Mitch has nothing but bad memories of growing up on the farm, but while working with Kristin to help save the farm, he comes to understand that those memories can be replaced by new, loving ones.

I just finished reading Hart’s Hollow Farm by Janet Dailey and wish it hadn’t ended. The characters seem real life, like they could be your own neighbors. It is set in a small Georgia town where everyone knows everyone else. You experience some of their day to day problems. The five main characters start off as five individual separate people who come together to make one whole complete family. You feel the same emotions that the characters feel. Some of the scenes actually bring you close to tears, while others warm your heart. If you have had actual experience with any of the problems in the book, you’d know that they are real and to the point. The way the characters deal with them is true to life. The scenes in the book are written so well that you feel like you are actually there. I anxiously await Ms. Dailey’s next book. #HartsHollowFarm#NetGalley

Hart’s Hollow Farm
Janet Dailey
January 28, 2020

Hart’s Hollow Farm is book #4 in Dailey’s Americana series. It is my first book of Janet Dailey’s to read. I saw a reader’s comment about it coming out soon. She noted that the book was coming out the next day. I was able to read the NetGalley copy. It was good to read and review such a pleasant family story. It tells the tale of Emmy Hart and her family. It begins with the current plot of Emmy and her farm that has gone down hill from the years of neglect. Her husband Joe passed several years earlier. Their son David could not keep up with the farm due to his alcohol addiction. His son MItch and daughter Carrie lived a sad, difficult life through the years of Emmy trying to show love for David. At the end of his senior year, Mitch went off to college to study architecture. He swore he would never come back to the farm. Carrie took the road of drugs instead of alcohol. She had two children, Dylan and Sophi but was not strong enough or mentally capable of taking care of them.
This latest chapter of the Americana series begins with Kristen Daniels heading down a hot, barren road searching for the entrance to Hart’s Farm. She saw an ad placed at a local store looking for help at the farm. She needed to speak with Emmy Hart about filling the job. Kristen had lost her position at another farm when the owners went bankrupt.
The sky was turning dark and nasty. She had hoped to arrive before the rains began to fall.
Pulling up the large house she could see that once upon a time the house had been a beautiful home that was well taken care of. She had hoped that Emmy would welcome her into the job so she could have a place to sleep and food to eat. After pulling up she heard a car’s engine rumbling down the lane. When it pulled up the man behind the wheel called out the window to tell her to pull her car around. They couldn’t get caught in the clay if the rains began. She couldn’t hear him and when he got out of the car, lightning flashed and thunder blasted the sky. The water rushed into the clay circle in front of the house. There was no pulling out now. She was trapped until the water subsided.
As I had not read about family members in the first books of the series I felt I had to pay close attention to keep up to the storyline. It was an easy plot to become involved in. I enjoyed Daily’s family journal. When I read from an author who is new to me that enjoy, I generally wonder how I missed reading her stories. Hart’s Hollow Farm was a wonderful story. It brought in the sadness as well as the joys that a family endures over the years. I encourage readers to find Janet Daily and read her Americana series. Hart’s Hollow Farm was published on January 28, 2020 by Zebra of Kensington Publishing. It is now available on the sales shelves for your reading pleasure.

Hart's Hollow Farm by Janet Dailey is a super cute story. It is a deep, emotional, heart-tugging tale. One that is highly centered on family, forgiveness, and unconditional love. Mitch is a man whose father abused him and his sister. He beat Mitch up and made his childhood one he wished he could forget. His grandma, Emmy, always believed that Mitch's father would become a better person. So, she kept welcoming his abusive father back to the farm house. But it never ended well. Mitch's sister has two kids and died. Her kids are raised by their great grandma, Emmy. Emmy is a sweet woman who hopes for the best in those she loves. She takes family seriously. Mitch wants her to sell the farm that caused him pain. The farm is down on it's glory days. But Emmy believes it still has the magic to become what she knows would be a miracle. She ends up hiring a woman to help her. The woman is running away from pain. Kristen lost her daughter due to cancer. Kristen always thought that her daughter would get better. Being around Emmy and her great grandchildren brings up the pain of losing her daughter. However, spending time helping with the kids and the farm, Kristen is falling in love with them all. She too believes the farm can be better. But it will take a lot of work, patience, and TLC. Janet Dailey creates a book with such vibrant characters. I got lost within their story. It was one epic journey with an ending that melted my heart. I look forward to reading more contemporary romance novels in the future. This writer has talent that brings fiction to life.

I receive this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

Janet Dailey brings us to Hart's Hollow Farm and Emmy Hart. Kristin Daniels makes her way here while getting away from her former life. She interrupts Emmy and a man arguing about selling the property and ends up with a job and a roof over her head. Emmy's grandchildren reminds Kristin of the daughter she lost and starts to hesitate staying until Emmy convinces her to stay for a free meal, a bed for the night, and some conversation. We meet Emmy's grandson Mitch who has come to convince his grandmother to sell the property. When he meets Kristin, she beckons something in him to come in while his past wants his to escape and never return. It turns out that the county wants to pave a bypass on her land in six months unless they come up with an alternate plan. The townspeople are divided and soon all three of them start working together while Mitch is determined to show that it is a lost cause.

Will Mitch and Kristin be able to let go of the past in time to see a future together? Will they be able to save Hart's Hollow Farm or is there no alternative but to allow the land to become part of the bypass? Janet Dailey brings us right into the story with these characters and watch them battle themselves with the past and present to hopefully have a better future. I have enjoyed Kristin and Mitch's story and look forward to another adventure with Janet Dailey. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books Zebra for this privilege.

I continue to admire Zebra/Kensington Books for revisiting Janet Dailey's Americana series (a book set in each of these United States) with the New Americana series, though at the rate of one book per year I doubt I'll see the finish of the new series. :-)

Kristen and Mitch, along with Emmy, Dylan, and Sadie, are characters that are easy to love. It's obvious that Kristen and Mitch are not just physically attracted to each other but want to be there for each other emotionally as well. Each has scars from the past, however, that will take a bit more in order to heal properly.

If there is a flaw with this book -- and there is -- it's that a lot of the past is glossed over too quickly. This book could have used another 100 pages, minimum (and I rarely if ever ask for more pages to read), to delve into the past with Emmy, Joe, and Ruth Ann, with Emmy, David, and Mitch, and with Emmy and Carrie, in addition to more time with Kristen and Anna. The time in the past could have been used as a contrast to the troubles of the present, especially where Emmy is concerned. Still, underlying threads of faith, love, and forgiveness along with the pain and uncertainty make this book a worthwhile read.

I received a copy from Zebra/Kensington Books through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

“Hart's Hollow Farm” by Janet Dailey
This is a clean contemporary romance story that manages to pack the exploration of an enormous amount of emotions into one growing season. If you feel the emotions of the character’s lives that you share in a story.. you will want to keep the tissues handy. Yes, I received an ARC of this story from the publisher via NetGalley. And this review is my honest opinion. If you like clean, honest, real world stories filled with more heart-ache than you would ever want in your own life… then this is a story for you. I cried buckets and loved every moment of this story… maybe because a chunk of my life was as a ‘farm girl’’… maybe because I have witnessed the devastating heart-ache of Alzheimer’s disease… maybe because I have lost a daughter.. maybe because my childhood home became a section of an interstate highway and the fields became pavement.
Maybe you will connect with this story, too, and your eyes will also spring a leak or two. Happy Reading ! !

This was a wonder book.
This is about Kristen, who comes to Harts Hallow Farm, looking for work for a few months, to get some money to move on to the next job. Kristen is trying to run from her painful past, and forget the great loss she’s suffered. And Mitch.. who comes back home to Harts Hallow, hoping that he will be able to talk some sense into his grandmother Emmy, and get her to sell the farm. But things do always work out how we want them too.
This was a wonderful story. And I enjoyed it greatly. The characters were written well, and you felt what they were feeling and had you hoping for their happiness. This story talks about Alzheimer’s disease, and losing ones memories to this awful disease. I’ll have to admit, those parts had me tearing up. As my own grandmother suffered from this. And it’s sad to watch a loved one, who is so strong, like Emmy in a bid story, slowly lose themselves. This book is definitely worth reading.

Very touching story of two women that are bound by loss, and help each other through tough times with the aid of one of the women's grandson. You have an older woman in danger of losing her farm, which is her main connection to her deceased husband. To help make ends meet, she places an ad that is answered by a young woman that lost her son to cancer. Together, they help each other heal and deal with the loss that they were having trouble getting over.

Kristen, Emmy and Mitch are beautifully written, with true depth of character. They take the reader on an emotional roller coaster as they each have loss, heartache, or a troubling past to get over so they can be put on a happier path.

All in all, this is a story of how family, both blood and by choice, can help you on the path to healing, and how strong bonds can be forged and help everyone find light.

An absolutely beautifully written story of tragic loss, heartfelt emotions and finding love... 'Hart's Hollow Farm' captured the essence of love, faith, hope, and the giving and acceptance of second chances.

Finding herself at Hart's Hollow Farm, Kristen, is just looking for a pit-stop, somewhere to sleep, work and get some money. She isn't interested in staying forever, but somehow between trying to help save Hart's Hollow Farm, and meeting the family, her heart becomes involved....

Mitch has no good memories of Hart's Hollow Farm, but returns adamant to get rid of the farm and take his little niece and nephew back with him to his city life. His grandmother, Emmy, has other ideas, even when her own health is frail and her memory isn't what it used to be! But soon, he finds more than what he bargained for and a reason to help save Emmy's farm....

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a honest review.

Hart's Hollow Farm was a beautiful story about love, pain, forgiveness and happiness. The story starts out with Kristen Daniels arriving at the Hart Hollow Farm for a job interview never expecting it to turn out the way it does. The same farm has been nothing but blood and tears for Mitch Hart and he really does not want to be coming back to help his grandmother. This was a story about life's difficulties and how if they don't break us, we come out of the experience a little bit bruised but open to the opportunities presented before us. I though the author did a lovely job expressing the pain that these people felt but did not wallow in, I also enjoyed the sense of community in this story.

Two damaged people come together to help a woman slowly fading away in this novel from a writer who knows how to pull at the heart. Kristen lost her daughter, and so much more, to cancer. She's hoping for fresh start. Emmy Hart is hoping that Kristen can help her get her farm- Hart's Hollow- back to a good place. Mitch is Emmy's grandson and he's got some real issue from his childhood. He wants Emmy to sell the farm. This touches on some very serious issues, including dementia and abuse, but does so lightly. The romance between Mitch and Kristen is a slow burn (and a clean one). You know, don't you, that things are going to work out but that's ok. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A nice read for a lazy day.

Janet Dailey's books always seem to touch a chord with me. Her stories are a comfortable read. You know the feeling you get when you pull out a well-r=worn, well- loved blanket and you snuggle into its warmth? THat's how I feel when I read one of Ms. Dailey's books: comfortable, cozy, and contented. "Hart's Hollow Farm"is no exception. I felt like I knew the characters. They are someone I would meet in my own home town. The story line is filled with promise and hope, with a touch of desperation thrown in to keep the story interesting.

Well written and well plotted. I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Not so much a romance between two people but a woman and the Hart family. Kristen needed love, to move on and to feel alive. Mitch needed to stop being angry at the past and let go of the grudge. But the Hart family needed faith in each other and the community. Just reading their story gives me a stronger appreciation for farmers and small towns. Although I had some concerns about Emmy's health and the logistics of a few things seemed off, it was a heartwarming feel good story. It's listed as book 4, however each book is independent of the others. My review was provided voluntarily after reading an early copy.

Today I wanted to share Hart’s Hollow Farm! This one will make you smile! Kristen arrives in Hart’s Hollow and agrees to work with Emmy to save her farm. When she meets Mitch, Emmy’s grandson, she starts to realize she has feelings for him. Mitch never thought he would come back home after his difficult past. But maybe he can find some happiness, it just might not be what he thinks! .

The romance was a little rushed to me. But you will appreciate the small town, farm life feel of this one. This is my first book by Janet Daily and it was a quick, stand-alone novel. .

Thanks to @kensingtonbooks @tlcbooktours for this copy!

This is a story of family differences and dementia that brought a tear to my eye more than once.
Mitch Hart left the family farm at eighteen and never looked back. When his sister dies and his niece and nephew may go into foster care he decides he needs to go home.
Kristen Daniels is trying to find a place to bring her peace from her troubled past. She shows up at the farm looking for work and that is where the story begins.
Janet Dailey is an author whose tales seem to sooth my soul. I feel like I am floating on clouds just moving from one page to another until the very end. Some books leave me a little tense but hers brings me peace of mind. Thank you Janet Dailey for what you do.

Mitch Hart's memories of his family's farm in Georgia were the kind that haunted his dreams. He left home for college and a career never expecting to return to the place where he grew up knowing only abuse from his alcoholic father. Kristen Daniels is running from her own memories, trying to forget the death of her five-year-old daughter to cancer that left a big empty hole in her heart. She answers a help wanted ad and runs into Mitch at Hart's Hollow Farm. The highway department wants to build a bypass that will necessitate buying out the farm. Mitch would love to see it go along with all the painful bits of his past that it holds. But his stubborn grandmother Emmy has other ideas.

Book #4 in the New Americana series is a great story. It touches on so many emotions, grief, anger, forgiveness and love. It is a multigenerational story that encompasses history, present day and includes hope for the future. The main characters are strong but all dealing with past tragedies in their lives and this story really hits on how they are able to overcome their pasts and move on to much better futures. It is an interesting read to see how the "love of the land" can hold both memories and instill a perserverence in people to hold on to what it important to them and to build a strong future.

Hart's Hollow Farm is a very well written story of a family being created from some very hurt and lost individuals. Kristen answers a rare ad from a woman looking for help on her farm. What she didn't expect is that there would be children involved. The loss of Kristen's daughter is still very painful and she thinks she should pass on this opportunity.

This is a love story set in an ideal location, for me. It may not be everyone's dream but from the ratings, it looks like there are plenty of others who agree.

Janet Dailey is always predictable in her talented ability to conjure up a story we all will enjoy!
She is the Phyllis Whitney of this era. She knows not just her new characters, but every little special thing about the location of her stories.....some of these places no longer exist....time bring change, and at 85, I have returned to some of these locales, and yes, they no longer exist...except that Janet Dailey has saved their memory in each story she writes.
Thank you, Janet Dailey.
