Whisper Lake #1

Rate this book
Stand-alone Whisper Lake romance, complete with HEA--and plenty of heat and heart along the way!

There is a thin line between love and hate. For Allison Walsh, that line was a tightrope hanging a hundred feet in the air, with no safety net to catch her if--or when--she fell.

Ali was barely treading water after losing her big brother, who was her hero and best friend. His sudden death left her to raise her twin nephews when the man that was supposed to share the responsibility with her went MIA after the funeral.

Kade's MMA training made him a champion, but it never equipped him to fight off the one force beyond his control: his feelings for his best friend's little sister. He's sure his demons mean he's not good enough for her, but he's going to do everything in his power to conquer them.

When the sexy, tattooed fighter shows up on Ali's doorstep out of the blue with a bag hanging over his shoulder and a smile that would make a nun blush, he seems different. But after all he's put her through, Ali's not in a forgive-and-forget kinda mood.

Will Kade prove that he's the man worthy of Ali's heart and trust, or will his past sins determine their future?

R A T I N G: 3 stars for writing duo Melanie and Shawna's Whisper of Love

‘The past couple of hours felt like she was in a dream she couldn’t wake up from, she just wasn’t sure if it was a nightmare or not…she was leaning toward nightmare. Kade, who appeared oblivious to her internal turmoil, turned up the radio and started singing along to Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”.
Yep, this was definitely a nightmare.’

After Allison Walsh’s brother died she was left to pick up the pieces: the business, the grief, the demands, and the responsibility and weight of two teenage boys on her shoulders. What one nephew deals with in a way of repression and studiousness, the other does with blatant turbulence, and Ali is left to manage the expressions of grief in her household as this new role of parental figure becomes a backfiring mess of trying too hard and failing miserably as everything now hinges on the two permanent additions to her life.

But Ali wasn’t solely in charge of the caregiver’s duty; Kade Jameson McKnight, MMA fighter, bold man of bad antics and best friend to Ali’s brother was also bound by duty to offer the same, but it seems this role of co-parent meant bolting out of town without another thought to him, because that’s exactly what Kade did when he abandoned Ali and his legal responsibilities.

So Ali was left to place her life on hold. She’s strong and she’s enduring, but overrun and overworked, Ali is riding every inch of tension and pressure which comes with the her heavy fortune. Grief still follows Ali everywhere, the only propelling force being her inclination to stay strong and be strong for her nephews. But when Kade nonchalantly strolls back into her life with the aim to make amends for his neglect, he realises that his mistakes aren’t easy to accept, mirrored through the people and memories he left behind - it’s going to take a lot more than seamless integration, especially where his best friend’s little sister is concerned.

To live in the shadow of her brother’s image is not easy, so when Kade invites himself back home and immediately puts her long-suffering efforts to shame without even trying, Ali’s not content to make his life any easier, even if she still holds a flame for her big brother’s best friend.

‘Whisper of Love’ isn’t a bad book by any means; it’s a well thought out and well-written, solid story but it was just a tad too tame and mild for me, missing that dazzling quality. I really like the small-town ambiance run by the town’s answer to the Needlepoint Mafia (this was a nice touch), the main character riddled with the unpacified doubt that she’s failing in this crucial role of bringing up teenagers, the male hero with a past inebriated with thoughtless deeds but fighting for something a bit heavier and heartier In the name of our female protagonist, Ali, and how the expressions of grief have affected all parties involved by the passing of one man.

If you like sweet stories of true love, life and family with a bit of pain and hardship, a bit sad with a lot of heat, and a dashing man who works for his mistakes you might like this book of small-town hopefuls, heartache and meddlers.
If you also like variations of the ‘brother’s best friend and best friend’s little sister still holding a torch’ romance you might want to try this.

‘Whisper of Love’ is a story of love, passion and pain, and while this offers a nice dose of steam, it’s blended with the importance of family values with the whole unit experiencing something that equally separates them as it does bring them together. And sometimes a helping hand from a edgy flame of the past with the best intentions are enough to lighten the load.

‘Part of what Kade had learned over the past year was to try and accept the things that he couldn’t change, have the courage to change the things he could, and the wisdom to know the difference.’

Trigger Warning: Discusses alcoholism and rehabilitation. Former childhood abuse. Swearing and detailed sex scenes.

Love the dedication message for the simple reason that I forget authors are also die hard fantasists that understand our reader enthusiasm and desires!: “The entire Whisper Lake series is dedicated to all the romance authors out there give me endless hours of escape, entertainment, and therapy!”

This was a sweet, fluffy little romance. But the plot was much like every other sweet, fluffy romance. If you want a nice diversion this might fit the bill.

There were a few things that annoyed me. Major spoilers:

MMA Fighter Returns

Just not liking MMS fighter books. He and heroine were named guardian of two boys after her brother does and he goes on a bender and takes off. When he sobers up he goes into rehab and has been sober for a year or so. He comes back like some kind of hero to the two teenage boys who have been having major issues. One is too good and one is unruly and getting in trouble alot. The heroine who has basically been breaking her neck getting food on the table and paying the bills has not been doing anything but raising those boys. One twin just treats her awful and then is nice to hero and I just wanted to slap him. The heroine has loved the hero secretly for years and he has been a total manho the whole time even though he had feelings for her of course. Gag me. I hate that. But when he went to rehab he stopped in surrounding anyone that moved and I think he had been celibate that last year too. He comes back, they play house and fall in love. There's a lot going on and the author writes well but I just don't like that type of storyline. There was a Happy Ending and I would read this author again.

The blurb is better than the book itself.

When the plot is common it's the way that the authors write the story to make it different from all. But unfortunately, this book lacks uniqueness.

All I read are about how the main characters think that the other one is sexy or how they lust about them but I didn't felt the connection of the proper build up of their relationship.

I can't say that I enjoyed this book. I skipped reading some parts and just forced myself to finish it,

I FOUND THE BLURB MORE APPEALING THAN THE CONTENT

A sweet childhood friends to lovers romance with plenty hot moments in the mix.

My first book by this author who I discovered while browsing books available in KU.

The story was touching.
Ali had lost her parents, then years later her brother in an accident leaving her with shared guardianship of his two sons along with Kade who was her brother's best friend.

Following the funeral Kade who is an MMA fighter or was, went AWOL leaving Ali to look after two teenage boys alone.

The blurb drew me to this story, hot MMA fighter, but there was no action with regards to that, the fighting was a part of his past by the time Kade came back on the scene turning up at Ali's door.

Kade returns a year on from the funeral after claiming he needed to sort his life out which doesn't go down well with Ali who has been struggling raising the boys alone when they were also supposed to be Kade's responsibility too.

WHISPER OF LOVE is a good story with a happy hea, it lacked angst and I just didn't like it being third person, I couldn't connect with the characters and I've found that's normally the case with third person, it's more of a story than feeling like your with the character on their journey.

Should this author consider writing first person dual pov I may read another.

Whisper of Love hooked me immediately. The characters were well written and the storyline was relatable.

A single mom due to circumstances beyond her control, Allison is doing the best she can raising 2 twin teenage boys. She's at the end of her ropes looking for a life vest when her first love and co-parent shows up unexpectedly.

Ali is a sweet caring women who loves her nephews unconditionally. She hasn't had it easy the past year and a half but she's always been there for her nephews. My heart was breaking for her. She wore her emotions on her sleeve at times but also knew when to keep them hidden.

Kade has been in and out of the boys life for years. He was their fathers best friend and grew up with Ali. He's been given a gift that he found overwhelming due to his addiction but knew he had to be a better man to be part of their life. His journey to be what the needed was longer than he wanted but knew he couldn't be with them any less of a man.

Ali and Kade past friendship helped these two build a solid foundation for the future. While it wasn't easy they were able to work together towards love and a future. I appreciated that we weren't given any unnecessary drama or angst. While the storyline may have seemed one note it was well written and explored a full range of emotions.

You can hate and trash all you want, but I'm always up for an instant family trope and I'm no even sorry about it. It's the 14-year-old me obsessed with the Life as We Know It movie (no, I'm still not over that movie and I probably never will, ILY Katherine Heigl!!!)

Oh my! Ali and Kade were absolutely amazing! I loved every little thing about these two! They had me smiling throughout out the whole book! I’m glad they had each other after everything that happened! I loved how protective Ali was of her two nephews! Those boys definitely kept her on her toes! I loved the little family they had with one another! So happy that nothing really changed with Kade around! The ending was perfect! Can’t wait to go back to Whisper Lake soon :)🧡

The second chance love stories are so bittersweet because there usually are hurt feelings at the background, but there is also that amazing hope of love conquering it all, and that is what brings so much joy and jubilee into the stories and to the lives and minds of the readers. I absolutely LOVE it when the hero comes back to town, with his feelings already developed towards the heroine, his intent clear, he is willing to do the hard work to win her heart again, and he is willing to grovel if that is required to be together with the love of his life. And Kade, oh my word, he does it all, he is all that, and so so much more.
It is not often that I am so connected to the characters and to the story that I would be in tears from the very start of the story, but Ali and the boys had me sobbing for them. I was a mess for the first three chapters, wishing I could just step in with a six pack of Half Baked, give Ali a big hug and help her around the house.
Ali is resilient, strong, fun, sarcastic, protective, loving, kind-hearted soul, and I admired her and her spunk so much, even though right at the beginning it was missing a bit because life had given her trouble and sorrow with a pallet full instead of a spoon full.
Kade had had his own troubles in life. He had grown up close to Ali and her brother, they shared the same story of parental alcohol abuse and neglect. His life and career at the MMA had taken a downhill spiral, he had failed with his responsibility, but he was here, he was sober, and he wanted to change his life, and be everything Ali would allow him to be to her and to the boys.
Ali and Kade have chemistry between them that is hotter than words can tell. They get each other, they understand each other, they know each other, and they are just perfect for each other. I loved the honesty, the openness, the palpable emotions streaming between them.
The secondary characters in the new spin-off series, the twins, Jess, Ethan, they all contributed to the story and I can already tell, this is going to be another hit series from the author. It is not a secret that I'm in love with the stories Melanie Shawn writes, the romance always has me smiling, sighing, and swooning. The characters speak straight to my heart, they have me laughing, and in tears, the friendships are dear and deep, there's just so many feelings, and deep emotions involved, along with the hottest love scenes you can pen out, and yes, it is not just sex, it is always loving, and there are feelings involved, and those scenes are intricate part of the plot developing.
What an amazingly emotional and entertaining start to the new series. Ali and Kade won my heart over from the very first scene, and I kept rooting for them to find the way to their HEA all through the tale. There were tears, there were smiles, there were deep, profound emotions, there were mistakes, and loss, and loving, and life, and I loved every moment of the story, wishing I could have lingered a little while longer as I can't wait for the next installment of the series...
An unputdownable, poignant story that I finished in one sitting

Melanie Shawn is always a one-click for me and what a great start to this new Whisper Lake Romance series! I loved this small town romance!

Ali Walsh is still reeling more than a year and a half after the unexpected death of her brother, Patrick. Not only was he the one who basically raised her due to the fact their mother was an alcoholic, she was also left co-custody of his twins, KJ and Ricky. She's doing everything she can to raise the teenagers, keep the house in order and keep the family business afloat. The only person she isn't taking care of is herself, but that's pretty tough when everyone is relying on you.

Kade McKnight was not only Patrick's best friend, he was also a very successful MMA fighter who got out of Whisper Lake as quickly as he could. Admittedly, he didn't handle Patrick's death well, so badly in fact that he made a scene at the funeral and then basically disappeared even though he was given co-custody of the twins along with Ali.

Eighteen months after Ali had last seen him, Kade shows up on her doorstep. The last thing she wants to do is to let him in, but her nephews are so excited to see him that she doesn't have a choice. Ali has endured a lot of loss in her life and the last thing she wants is for Kade to come into her nephews life and then disappear again. There might be a big part of her that would be devastated if he was to disappear again as well. Will Kade stick around and will long simmering, and unspoken, feelings between Kade and Ali finally make it to the surface?

I loved everything about this book and the added ways that Patrick still found a way to be involved even though he was no longer living was brilliant. I enjoyed KJ and Ricky because they were boys who were dealing with a lot of feelings and also just trying to be teenagers. Another winner in a fantastic stable of books by this romance writing duo!

Wow! What emotion! Allison not only has to deal with the loss of her brother & step up to to raise his twin sons, she has to deal with the fact that her brother's best friend, & her crush & co-god parent, has fled out of their lives. A situation that was hard enough for two people to handle together & she has to do it by herself & question herself the entire time. Then he thinks he can walk back in a year & a half later as if nothing has happened? It's all she can do to keep her head up.

Kade can't believe it. This couldn't be Allison. "The sunken cheeks, the haunting dark circles beneath her eyes, and her skeleton frame told him she hadn't been eating or sleeping. Guilt punched him in his chest & stomach". He really thought she was better off without him for a time. What had the boys put her through? Could he fix this?

I loved Kade & Allison as a couple. They each have their own issues but they have to get past in order to present a united front in raising the teens. Allison is determined not to give into her feelings since she doesn't want to be hurt again. Kade is trying to show Allison that his feelings are sincere. I really enjoyed this storyline. I went from crying in one section to laughing in another. Kade's past comes back to affect him in a side story. Trust me, you'll want a box of tissues beside you & plenty of time to read this one from cover to cover!

This book is so good and touched my heart. Patrick has raised his sister Allison Walsh. Kade Jameson McKnight is his best friend and they have been like brothers. Patrick’s father was an alcoholic, and the Walsh’s mother was an alcoholic. Patrick was a single father to two boys, Ricky and KJ. Sadly Patrick died and left custody of his boys to Alli and Kade. Kade was an MMA champion and was a player. Unfortunately he was not there to help Alli out for the first year and a half. The boys just turned 13 and giving Alli a hard time. She is run down, lost weight and doesn’t get enough sleep. Her doorbell rings and when she goes to answer it, there is Kade. She is angry and hurt that he just popped in with no warning. The boys see him and ask him to stay with them.

I felt so bad for the twins, Alli, and Kade because of the death of Patrick. They all handled it or didn’t handle it in different ways. I was glad to see Kade there to help out and change the dynamics some. Alli and Kade had such sparks flying off them, I’m surprised anyone around them didn’t get burnt! This is a touching book on how death affected loved ones and the love that came from it all. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.

Whisper of Love takes place a year and a half after Ali's brother, Patrick unexpectedly died leaving her with a set of grieving teenage twins to finish raising. She has been struggling to keep her grief separate from the boys since she knows that they don't seem to be taking the death any better than she had been. Kade was Patrick's best friend and he disappeared after the funeral even though he was the other legal guardian of the boys.

When Kade shows up unexpected to Ali's house, the twins are ecstatic but Ali just wants to know how long before he disappears again. This story ends up tugging at your heart strings when you see all of the characters still struggling with their own demons and grief while helping each other get through all of the changes in their lives. There is an underlying theme of forgiveness and letting go of expectations that was handled with grace and honesty. The two main characters have to both grow and let go of their painful pasts in order to forge into the future they both deserve.

I was so excited to read Whisper of Love, the first book in Melanie Shawn’s newest series. I started the book and read straight through without a break. I am totally in love with Ali and Kade, I feel sorry for Ricky and want to wash KJ’s mouth out with soap. To say that I think this is my new favorite series and that I can’t wait until the next book is an understatment. I laughed and cried through the entire book. I also have my hopes of who will be the next story.

The story of Ali and Kade is not your typical best friend’s sister book. All though they have a history together, mostly of bickering...they also share a love for one another. Spoiler alert: I think my favorite two parts are the home video that Kade found of Patrick and that the two boys knew it all along.

This HEA is not one that you want to miss but you might want to keep the kleenex handy.

I loved this book! It is a touching, steamy,
& emotional story. Ali, Kade, & the twins Ricky & KJ, lives had been affected by an unexpected tragedy. Ali & Kade, were
left custody of the twins. But, for the past
year & a half, Ali has raised the boys, alone. Ali, Ricky & KJ, still grieve terribly over the loss of their brother/father.
Until Kade rides back into town.
He's been through his own hell, for the past year & a half, & has come out ahead. Kade see's how exhausted Ali is.
He's ready to step up, & do the right thing
for her, the boys, & his best friend, Patrick.
Ali & Kade have always been secretly
in love with each other. But will Ali ever forgive Kade for disappearing?
Their chemistry is off the chart.
The emotions, & their chemistry pulled
me in, & kept me hooked, till the end.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!!

This book is the beginning of a new series and it truly is a touching, heartbreaking but also heartwarming story.
After her brother’s death, Ali Walsh becomes the guardian of her two young teenage nephews. Her life is no longer hers, the boys are barely coping and she is struggling to stay afloat.
Over a year after the death of her brother, his best friend, and the other person named guardian of the boys, Kade, shows up at her door. She is furious with him. But Kade had reasons for his delayed appearance. But that delay devastated Ali .
I loved that the author reminds us that while life throws us curveballs, it also can open doors that will bring us happiness. That when you find someone that loves you and offers unconditional love , you need to treasure that person. Especially when they become “your safe place”.
Can’t wait for the next book in this series.
I voluntarily read this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Another great story. Emotional and sexy and sweet.
Ali has been raising her twin nephews for the last 18-month. She has also been trying to deal with the loss of her only brother, the twins dad Patrick. Ali wasn’t named the only guardian of the twins however. Kade is also guardian of the boys. But to be a guardian you must actually be around to take care of them. Kade has been gone since his best-friend’s death 18 months ago.
Ali has had a lot to deal with. She was so very close to her brother and his death has really taken a toll on her. Add to it the fact that she is also now in charge of their family business and guardian to the twins who are having their own issues dealing with their father’s death. KJ (who is names after Kade Jameson) idolizes Kade which Ali can’t stand as he walked out on her and the twins after Patrick’s death and she has not heard a word from him since. Ricky is the other twin that looks identical to his late father and is having a hard time with looking in the mirror and seeing himself looking like his father who he misses terribly.
Then one day out of the blue Kade shows up at the house. Ali is so taken back. She is angry and hurt. Kade is there to make things right and explain what’s kept him away all these months. He is also ready to admit his love for her.
Can Ali handle how Kade makes her feel? Can she handle knowing he wants her as bad as she wants him? After all this time of him being gone can you let herself get involved with Kade and except that he wants forever with her?
This is such a great story. Very glad I got to read it. Read to find out all the juicy details of Ali and Kade.

AH-MAZING! start to a new Melanie Shawn series! I read it straight through today with breaks only to eat! Kade was WONDERFUL, especially after you found out about his last 18-months. Ali was an absolute sweetheart, nearly at the end of her rope. The best friend's sister angle had a twist in that they were verbal sparring partners from way back, AND they both had feelings that they didn't share with anyone else. The VCR tape was FANTASTIC and made me cry sad and happy tears! The twins are awesome kids. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Kade and Ali have know each other all their lives, what with Kade’s best friend being Ali’s brother. When tragedy strikes the friendship turns cold and Kade runs.

When Kade returns the fire is reignited.

The story was easy to read and sucks you in from the first word. Kade and Ali are easy to love and even easy to love together.

I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is book 1 of the Whisper Lake series.

A really enjoyable read and I would highly recommend.

I really love this new series!! When Allison Walsh has to bring up her brother Patrick's twin sons, she is devastated and barely functioning after his sudden death. When Patrick's best friend Kade Mcknight comes back to town a year and a half after his death, he comes back to mend fences and to be with the only woman he has ever loved...Allison. I really love this friends to lovers story...these two were so broken that it took the love they had for each other to fix there broken hearts!! WOW!! Words escape me in trying to describe how much I loved Ali and Kade while reading Whisper of Love by the amazing Melanie Shawn, the first book in their new series A Whisper Lake Romance. After the death of her older brother, Ali was left to raise her twin nephews while the man who was to share this duty has been missing since the funeral. Ali’s was overwhelmed with all of her responsibilities, barely existing. Then, one day a knock on the door brings the missing best friend of her brother. Kade might have been a champion MMA fighter but he was ill-equipped to handle his feelings for his best friend’s little sister. His always thought he was not good enough for her, but he was going to do everything in his power to prove he was the one for her. After all he put her through Ali was not in a forgive-and-forget mood. Ali’s road to finding herself again and Kade’s road to redemption were not easy to navigate but well worth it in the end.

Through their amazing and vivid writing Melanie Shawn did an outstanding job tackling this emotional story and struggled to put the book down. I enjoyed the way the authors wrote scenes showing the true feelings Ali and Kade have for each other. I also laughed at the antics of the Knitting Mafia and their control of the town. I appreciated the support the friends of Ali and Kade had for them and the boys. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the next story in the Whisper Lake series.

Hands down the best book I have read in 2018!!! I cannot wait till the next book in this series. Ali and Kade's story was amazing. Two people together after some unfortunate situations but they sure find the best of it. They grew up together and when Ali's brother passes away they find themselves co parenting but Kade doesn't come to help till 18 months later. Ali gives him a hard time but Kade isn't willing to let her go. He is going to stick around and make the family he wants.

Loved my first visit to Whisper Lake. Got the feels for another great series. Loved the love/hate angst and chemistry that Ali had for Kade. He really did come in the picture to be a knight in shining armor. Loved the twins too. The always helpful Ricky and troublesome super protective KJ. And we all need the best friend like Jenn. Can't wait for my next visit to the lake.

Ali and Kade have loved each other for years....neither told the other and when the unthinkable happens and they have to step up to take care of teenage boys, Kade flakes and leaves Ali to do it all. Kade gets his act together and comes back to claim the women he loves.....I loved the small town setting. This is a fast funny read and I can’t wait for book two.

Whisper of Love was absolutely wonderful. This story touched on all of my emotions. Ali is struggling to raise her twin nephews after her brother Patrick passed away. Kade was Patrick’s best friend and Ali’s first love. Kade is also the twins guardians as well but played a disappearing act after showing up drunk to the funeral. Kade shows up on Ali’s doorstep a year and a half later and throws Ali off balance. Ali doesn’t know whether to be happy or upset that Kade is back. While Ali struggled raising the twins, Kade was fighting his own demons as well. I loved the heartfelt moments between Ali and Kade. The hurt and the obstacle they overcame tugged at my heart strings. What a wonderful start to this new series.
