Fiona Faris is an American author of authentic historical Medieval & Scottish romance books. She started writing historical highlander romance after she visited the Scottish Highlands years ago with her husband.
Her books have received startling reviews about the humor, the darkness and the romance they have.
She lives in Dallas, Texas with her husband and their two sons. Before she started writing romance, she experienced the various occupations: translator, dog-training, and a substitute English teacher for the most part of her life... However, nothing could ever compare to writing stories depicting the majestic and mysterious Scottish Highlands!
3.5 stars I enjoyed the story, it had a good pace with a good amount of action. I liked the main characters of Alex and his sister Rebecca. Emily, I was unsure of, I did wonder how old she was, as she did act immaturely at times. She did seem to mature as the story developed. There is danger from a number of sources that they need to be on their guard for. There were a number of grammatical mistakes that caused me to reread sentences. Overall it was an entertaining read and I will read more of this author’s work.
Highlander’s Dark Pride by Fiona Faris is a fantastic story filled with romance, intrigue and a happy ending. So far this is my favorite book by Faris. I loved the hero- Alexander MacTavish. He is a dark braw Highlander - tough exterior but soft and sweet to those he loves on the inside. “He covered her lips with his; kissing her like his life depended on it. She responded in kind, her arms tight around his neck as she pulled him as close as possible, opening her mouth and her heart to him.” Hubba! Hubba! This book has some steam scenes and some sweet romance in it as well. I also enjoyed the villain. He is absolutely someone that you love to hate. Can’t wait to read more from Ms. Faris.
3.5-4 🌟stars The love story was fine, the villain a bit over the top, but interesting in that the story was set in England during the English Civil War of the mid-17th century. This is not a setting I've noted much in the current crop of historical romance. I must admit, however, the female romantic lead was not very appealing; I found her a bit of an impulsive airhead. Good thing her wild Highland warrior had enough patience to find other charms!😉
This story would have been improved greatly by more attention from an editor and proofreader. I began keeping track of the anachronisms and missing, misspelled and incorrectly used words but had to desist because there were so many.
Alpha Male🐺🍆⛲🔪 Adult Romance💞 When Emily💃💋 Caldwell's cavalier father is made Baron, her marriage chances go up. The second oldest of eight daughters, she hopes to marry well. Alexander MacTavish🐺🔪🍆⛲ is a huge Scotsman who saved Lord Caldwell's life in a battle, and the Lord awarded him some land🏰, as he had no male heirs, only daughters. Caldwell also offers Emily💃💋 in marriage to bring the families together. Alexander🐺🍆⛲🔪 meets Emily💃💋 for the first time and their wedding👰 is just a few days away! As a marriage present and reward for his heroism, Lord Caldwell gives Alexander, Dun Alba🏰, one of his estates near the Scottish border.
Emily💃💋 will be far away from her sisters. She is also horribly spoiled and naive, throwing tantrums of despair at the worst times. Unfortunately, Alexander🐺🍆⛲🔪 is stuck with her, and when they arrive at his new estate, they find The manor house🏰 run down, unhabitable and falling down. Of course Emily💃💋 is nearly useless, and most of the cleaning falls to Alexander's sister and Emily's maid.
The book has some continuity problems, Alexander's eyes change from blue to Gray intermittently and the number of sisters Emily has goes from eight to seven to five. The story was somewhat confusing in the beginning, partly because of the addition of Alexander's sister, Rebecca, into the mix of characters. I didn't much like the character of Emily💃💋. She was childish and spoiled.
I did enjoy this book quite a bit and it's problems are minor. The book is long, probably about 5 to 6 hours of big hot Scot reading!
Interesting and entertaining story with a more realistic romantic relationship than other romance novels out there. But I found myself a little uninterested in Alexander because he wasn't lacking more sympathy for what Emily was going through. It's a light and easy read. However, the inconsistencies and grammatical errors became distracting. Does Emily have 8 sisters? 7? 6? Or 5? It's different in several places. And are Alexander's eyes gray or blue? It goes back and forth. And there were several moments when I wondered if I'd missed a page because the transition was hard to follow or didn't make sense. That lead to some confusion while reading, which took away from the flow of the story. There were also things I felt were underdeveloped... (Spoiler ahead) like when they moved to Don Alba, why isn't she attempting to write her family more? Or more saddened at the loss of seeing them as often as she used to?

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! Spellbinding! Man, talk about out of my dreams and into my car. A whirlwind of unexpected activities and surprising events catapults those stormy emotions, coiling tightly, bursting to life brilliantly. Drama, adversity and suspense engage all of your senses while a plethora of twists and turns run rampant. One exhilarating storyline and gripping plot propels this bad boy to life flawlessly. Struggling through all the trials and tribulations along with a few bumps and bruises sending this bad boy skyrocketing. The characters are authentic, relatable and realistic with such depth and individuality it feels as though you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are graphically detailed and descriptive making it easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Fantastic job Fiona, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
More 1.5 than 2. A nice Scottish soldier with a very sheltered (crazy sheltered) young wife. Silly to think any girl could grow up in those times and be as ignorant as this. Anyway, she's loyal if stupid. Story is predictable - the pretty boy is not nice; the scary boy is nice.
SETTING: 3 months after the war of three kingdoms had ended, when Cromwell and the Republicans had triumphed, and conditions were still unsettled in England and Scotland. An orphaned, landless Highlander is rewarded for saving the life of a Republican Cavalryman by being given his daughter, lands and a manor from bride’s grandfather. The bride, a refined English lady, expecting a polished gentleman, finds herself betrothed by the King to this unpolished man, the antithesis of what she had been raised to expect in a husband. How would they make this betrothal and subsequent marriage a success? MacTavish and his sister Rebecca lost their parents when they were quite young, and were left to fend for themselves. Homeless, hungry, taken advantage of because of their youth and illness, they experienced miseries far beyond any that Emily (the bride)could even imagine. When they arrive at their new home after a fast wedding, they find the manor in ruins, bandits harassing the families on the lands, and a populace fearful that the new lord will not stay and care for his new responsibilities. Emily must learn what life is like for the underprivileged and helpless of the world. Rebecca, her new sister-in-law aids her by gradually revealing the hardships she and her brother survived, setting a pattern of self-sufficiency and gratefulness for the blessings that are present. CRITIQUE: I enjoyed the storyline, the characters of MacTavish and his sister Rebecca. Emily grew in this story from a pampered “princess” to a more mature woman able to contribute much to a happy home in a far more primitive environment than the one in which she had been raised, and had come to expect was her “due”. Sex was the glue that bound MacTavish and Emily together early on, and few details were omitted, making this a work for mature audiences. There were twists and turns leading to sudden tragedies, which keep the reader turning the pages. In the epilogue, there are new threads added, which are likely followed up in a subsequent book, as they tend to raise anticipation of another story, which I eagerly anticipate.
I am currently at 58% of the book. And there are a few parts that I have really enjoyed mainly the main characters. On one hand we have the strong Highlander hero , Alexander who lets Pride lead him in most things who is looking to better his life for himself and his sister Rebecca from Year's of homelessness and struggles by marrying a overly cosseted English lass, Emily who is one of several pampered and protected daughters of an English Lord.
As a wedding present they are given a tumbled down estate that they must work at repairing and setting up a life. There are a few obstacles 1 in being a Suiter for the Lass that had caused some previous problems between the newlyweds. And this Warrior follows them and continues to test them and the strength of their marriage.
I have read a few reviews where the heroes sister Rebecca is praised as being strong female contrasting heavily to the heroines weaknesses and ignorance. And although Rebecca is strong in of herself I strongly dislike the obstacle she creates and coming between husband and wife buy her sheer presence alone and Alexander's deferential treatment to her over his wife. Where he has complained his wife is not taking a leadership role and in the same sentence asking his sister what should be done around the house. This shows a great weakness in character on Alexander's part. And my major problem with the book so far.
On the same note Emily herself is Young and immature and has not experienced any real living outside of her protected family bosom. I felt more allowances should have been given for Emily in that case. And desperately hope that reparations and maybe even a comeuppance is coming further down the line for Alex's treatment differences between sister and wife.
However Emily's continued rash immaturity was frustrating at many times. I just wish the author had done better at conveying why it is we're being lead to not like Emily and adore Rebecca when I am feeling quite the opposite. We shall see if this is rectified to my satisfaction further in.
What a hoot this story was. I loved the insipid heroine Emily for her naivete but found that underneath she was willing to become a better person than she was. She did indeed have prejudices against the Scots as she was English. But getting to know her new husband Alexander was an enlightenment. Towards the end she realized the meaning of true love and that was what she was getting from Alexander. She knows by how she had behaved all along she did not deserve him. But she was determined to prove herself trustworthy to him. Alex was a warrior through and through. There was only one thing that softened his heart and that was his sister Rebecca. They lost their parents when they were young and had to grow up on the streets. They have known hardship their whole life. They always had each other. Now that Alex was married, he made room in his life and heart for Emily. She kept messing up a lot. But I have to say she always strives to help out where she could and was not afraid of hard work. She had a lot of adjusting to do because she lived as a "princess". Alex was patient and accommodating to her. He did have a temper but he never would physically take it out on any woman. Trust was their problem. It was always one step forward and two steps back. I loved the overall story of Emily and Alex's romance. How they put up with each other, got angry with each other, how they passionately made up with each other and got to learn more about the other every day. I definitely did not like the villain of the story. Phillip was a slimy sneaky two faced deviant evil murderer. Each time Phillip tried to foil anything and everything Alex was trying to build with Emily he had to become even more deadly and dangerous than ever before. This book kept my attention from page one till the end. The extended epilogue did not tie up some loose ends but I am hopeful the next book will pick up where this one left off. An excellent read and I highly recommend it.
Emily is quite content in her home with her mother and lots of sisters. Though born second, she seems to take on the responsibility of helping their mother with the needs of her sisters, even her older sister who is dead. As their father is a soldier for the crown, the ladies and house staff are kept busy with running the household. She's not at all prepared for the news that her father is coming home with her husband to be. Alexander, a Scottish highlander, has been a soldier since he was tall enough to seem if she. He and his sister, Rebecca, have been orphaned since an early age, with Alexander keeping them fed and cared for as best he could. He saved his commander's life in the battlefield, and showing his gratitude for the brave soldier is offering one of his daughters as Alexander's wife. He's only a little more prepared than his wife to be. Too bad Scotsmen have the reputation of being frightening enough for Emily to faint when they're introduced. Wonderful characters and plot. Very enjoyable read!
Emily has always dreamed of marrying an English gentleman. When she finds out she's to be married when her father comes home with the king and men who fought with her father and the king she sees Phillip and believes he is to be her husband until her father announce she is to married the man that saved his life, Alexander MacTavish who is a Scotsman and huge and scary to her. She calls a barbarian. They don't get off to the best start. On there effing day she has seconds thoughts and runs off with Phillip, but she realizes she has to go back but before she can Alexander finds them and brings her back. They get married and leave for the new home her father gave them as a wedding gift. Little do they know Phillip has plans of his own. Emily and Alexander start to trust each other, but their trust is tested over and over. Great story! Waiting not so patiently for Fiona's next book. I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.
This was a good story and I enjoyed reading it. The only thing that bothered me was why would Emily's father not send along soldiers with Alexander, his sister and Rebecca? To send his daughter to a place he hasn't visited in a long while without knowing it's condition and not sending men with them for protection just didn't seem like her father cared for her welfare. No matter how good a soldier Alexander was, he couldn't protect Emily, his sister and her maid from a gang of outlaws without help. I understood that Emily was very sheltered but she was very immature too. To run off on her wedding night no matter how impulsive she was, just seemed too immature for a daughter brought up to know her duty in that day and age. Other then that, I found the story entertaining and enjoyable.
Something that is always important to me is that I like the characters otherwise it’s kind of hard to root for their HEA. So I liked most of the characters but unfortunately I never warmed up to the heroine, she just seemed immature and selfish and I really expected that to change as the book went on but it never seemed to. The hero and his sister were awesome and I really enjoyed them! I was also a little disappointed with the inconsistencies like how many sisters does Emily really have 🤷🏻♀️? And this may seem petty but there was a seen where Rebecca and the steward Mr. Cook sat next to each other at dinner talking, when next they meet (later in the book) they say they have never been introduced. I think the reason that stood out to me was because I really liked Rebecca and I kept trying to guess who would be her love interest. I’m happy the next book in the series will be her story.
Alexander MacTavish, a Scottish Highlander soldier saved Lord Caldwell's life on the field of battle and is awarded Emily Caldwell as his bride along with the King's blessing to help unite the England and Scotland. Phillip is a 3rd son of a Lord and is looking for the easiest way to get land and money 💰without having to work and tries to steal Emily away on her wedding night but Alex catches up with them and gets her back. Phillip is a scoundrel that hires brigands that have tangled with Alex and has them help kidnap Emily from the Inn that she is staying at overnight with Alex, his sister Rebecca and a servant on their way to Emily's family home for her father's funeral.
This book totally rocked....5🌟’s Another amazing highlander romance by Fiona Faris! I loved the realities and challenges of life and marriage interwoven throughout “The Highlanders Dark Pride!” The main characters, Emily, Alexander and Rebeccas’ emotions were so expertly crafted I could empathize, cringe, laugh and feel their joy along with them! Top all that off with an arranged marriage, add a villainous snake .....Philip Bristol and some brigands and you’ve ticked all the boxes of a great book! I’m hoping that Rebecca gets her own story! She has so much spitfire and determination and there is so much that could still happen.... I got an early copy of this book and this is my honest opinion!
I adore Fiona Faris’ novels. That being said, there were quite a few grammatical errors and words in places they don’t belong. This made me go over sentences 2-3 times to figure out if it was me or if the sentences were odd. I found Emily to be an insipid dunderhead throughout the story unfortunately. You need better editors Fiona. Someone that will catch the errors before the book is published. I did enjoy the storyline and hope Alexander and the forthcoming baby help Emily feel more confident.
No said an arranged marriage would be easy, especially not when personal prejudices are involved. This story did a good job marrying a Scottish soldier to a sheltered English noblewoman. At first, I didn't know if I would like Emily I was shaking my head at her decisions. However, she grew on me. Emily and Alexander's interactions were genuine and not always filled with flowery words. They truly struggled to make a go at this arranged union, despite the interference from Philip. Loved Alexander's sister and can't wait to see where her story goes.
An excellent read. I don’t rewrite authors book. I leave it to them. I tell you the emotions that the book evokes. Get ready for a whirlwind of emotions. Get ready to slap somebody for their behavior. Get ready to yell yay when things start going right. Get ready to enjoy sensual sexual writing scenes. Get ready for a surprise ending. I’m usually pretty good at guessing endings. But not this one. And I’m looking forward to a sequel. She has developed excellent characters. Can’t wait to see another book using the characters
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. This is another exciting and entertaining historical romance by this author. Once again, the author treats us to a spellbinding and intriguing story which is fraught with danger, betrayal, violence, drama, loyalty and, of course, heart- stopping romance. Intriguing and engaging characters pulled me into the story right from the start and the many twists and nonstop action kept me reading long into the night. The plot was complex and satisfying and the touch of brogue throughout the story added authenticity. A fantastic read.
Emily is the oldest of her eight sisters. Living a sheltered life her and her new husband started their journey to their new home with his sister. Alexander saved Emily's father life. He is being rewarded with a wife and an estate. Upon their arrival they were devastated to see its condition. Rebecca and her brother knows what it's like to have nothing, living in the streets trying daily to survive. Commander Phillip is determined to sway Emily to leave her husband. When bad news reaches Emily and Alexander there is only one thing they must do.
This is the best of this author's books so far. Each one has gotten better and this shows that this author has reached a maturity in her writing. I really enjoyed this story. The characters are very well developed, the plot was believable with lots of twists and turns. The story flowed easily and smoothly from scene to scene. Keep up the good work, Ms. Faris.
This book was a fast read for me...that's my favorite kind of book. The story of Alexander and Emily starts when he saves her father on the battle field so he gives Alexander his daughter and a worn down castle. They learn to love and trust each other rebuilding and dealing with brigands. And Phillip who wanted Emily. If you like action and suspense with some romance thrown in you'll enjoy this book!
Alexander a soldier has no title nor a place to call home. The King compensated him by marrying into titled household. Emily was ready for her to be married off to her father’s choice but she never expected him to marry her off to a Barbarian. Will Alexander be able to handle the young and impulsive Emily?
This was my first Fiona Faris read. At first it was slow going and I had a dislike of the two main characters, but I persevered and continued on. I am glad that I did. Even though it took me a bit of time, I slowly warmed up to Alexander and Emily. I thoroughly enjoyed the book overall. I love a good Scottish romance and this turned out to be one. I look forward to reading more of this author's books.
What happens when a proper young lady is promised in marriage to a Scottish highlander? This Emily and Alexanders story. She is home sick and unacustomed to hard work and rough conditions. He is hard working and thinks she is spoiled and wanting a fine English gentleman. Somehow they find their way thru many hardships and find love for each other. A sweet story with some heat, danger and mystery.
I really wanted to enjoy this book. It had all of the components to make a very enjoyable romance. Emily managed to suck all of the life out of the story. She took the “sheltered lass” to a whole new level. Fainting and screaming throughout the entire book. Alexander was not quite the hero either. He had good intentions, but seemed to get hurt at every altercation. The stars are for the bedroom scenes. At least they got those right.
The hero saves a father's life his reward the eldest daughter's hand in marriage. Throw in a monarch and a scoundrel, a sort of kidnapping or two, brands and a ruined castle. What you end up with is a mix up of a story that just never seems to quite come together for me. The intimate scene were fairly well written. Double line spacing between paragraphs was irritating.
Having a fondness for Scottish themed romance novels, this one being a free download made a tempting offer. The style of writing and story pulled me in. The ending was a little abrupt however. The promise of a free "epilogue " sounded like some closure, but revealed another short scene that is supposed to lead into the next book in a series. There is a free download to another short story of hers, which I may read someday.
