Cirsova is one of the leading lights of the revival of pulp writing, science fantasy, and the short story as an American art form.
This issue contains a solid, diverse (truly diverse) set of takes on "Tales from the Crypt" style horror, California Sun 1960s sci-fi a la The Outer Limits, a little Burroughs, a little Clark Ashton Smith, maybe some Heavy Metal, the works. It's old school but not old times, if that distinction makes sense.
So far I’ve only read the main novella, Halcyon, but found it very impressive, with almost the feel of a Leigh Brackett, dealing with men of war who’ve seen and done and experienced much, and who find healing and a new mission on a world in a sci fi universe that has a decidedly fantasy feel. An impressive start and I look forward to reading the rest soon.
