Pain and grief are a constant part of my life nowadays, all made worse by my untreated depression. When I’m forced out of bed to go to a party with my sister, I meet Caesar—and everything changes.
Caesar is flamboyant, social, and fun to be around. He shows me what I’ve been missing, both in and out of bed, and for the first time in years, I feel alive again.
But my depression’s getting worse. Not to mention the fact that I fancy someone else. This thing with Caesar is just fun. Until it isn’t.
The blurb is very misleading. Romance was only a small part of this story. Matt and Caesar really clicked. There was some good sex. Unfortunately, the relationship building never got past pouring the concrete foundation. Most of the story featured Matt and his mental health struggle. Caesar, even though he had a major health problem, was not developed. Matt's family played an important role. At the end, I was left with a feeling of happiness for Matt.
How did this book even get published? To me this read more like rough first, unfinished draft. It was fragmented, messy and a lot of it didn’t make sense. Things were left out, unexplained and just…
This felt like book 2 in a series, there were a lot of unexplained references to the past - that I felt were never really explained. It was expected of the reader to already know of it all with the barest of hints. In the beginning I liked this as a lot of authors have these huge info dumps to get everyone up to speed. So when that didn't happen I was happy - I would get to think a bit for myself. But this felt like writing the past yourself. Sure conclusions can be made, but I would've liked some more backstory.
And where did that ending come from? Did I miss a book in my book? Needless to say - move along and find something better to read.
This book covers many sensitive subjects. Matty and Caeser meet at a party and just click. Matty is battling depression while Ceaser is hiding something important. Emotionally draining but very well written.
At first I was scared for Matt and then I felt his pain. Losing a parent is hard to accept at any age, but for Matthew, losing his dad so suddenly only advanced his already depressed state. Matt was a cutter and gay except no one knew.
Caesar sees Matt at his mates party sitting alone and decided to offer him a drink. Well that drink led to conversation and to them leaving the party completely. They end up spending the whole weekend together.
Matt has issues that are exacerbated when Caesar has a gran mal seizure. He has a psychotic episode that lands him in the A&E. Through all of this the book takes you through the why's. Family support is strong in this book. It's about real life and I want to see where TT takes this story.
TT no novellas please. Keep this story with full length novels cause it's too much of an important theme to minimize.
I voluntarily received an advanced reader's copy and leaving my honest review for this meaningful must read story.
This is a dark emotional book with a lot and I mean a lot of pain and angst. This is not the first book by this author I read and I know she addresses the most difficult subjects. I thought I was prepared for the emotional upheaval, but I didn’t expect this. Her descriptions, sometimes in grueling detail, stay with you for a long time.
The author counterbalances the darkness with much needed brightness. The help given without restrictions by friends and family, the love and support of his boyfriend, makes this also a book of hope and optimism. It shows that is important to acknowledge your darkest feelings and that there is light at the horizon.
The book is well written with crisp, clear language, that makes quite an impact. Good character development and a steady pace without being rushed.
If you are looking for a light and easy read this book is definitely not for you. But if you are up for a deep emotional story I highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Holy emotional roller coaster ride. Let me see if I can put together what I felt when reading this: beautifully tragic, heart-wrenchingly amazing, horrifically stunning. It was all of these things. A yin and a yang. Tragic yet beautiful, dark and light, sad and happy, lonely and loving. To sum it up in a single word......perfect. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
