Meleah Bowles is Co-Founder of Earn Spend Live. Using her feminine wiles and maybe a touch of black magic, she tricked her partner into moving one block away from her mother with their two dogs and even a ferret for a little while. She and Elise have known each other for years, but only recently discovered their undying love for each other. She has a BA in technical writing from The University of Central Arkansas.
I love this book. It’s a beautiful journal that has hints and tips and challenges to enable all of us to spend less find online and more time in the real world. In this day and age we all need to detox from technology and this guide helps you do it in an easy and manageable way with a hand journal to keep track of everything. I will be buying a physical copy of this book once it’s released so that I can start filling it in properly.
I loved this book! With my job being all-consuming, I have recently tried to focus on "unplugging" from work and focusing on home life when I'm home.
This book focuses on the general addiction that people have to technology - not just work life balance. But I found the tactics applicable. This journal is interactive and helps guide you through "detoxing."
I also LOVED the illustrations and graphics in this book! It was so pretty and calming and I think it really added to the book.
This book was fun, informative, easy to follow and overall had a great message! --------- The publisher granted my wish for an ARC, I am so excited!!
Really great workbook for those who want to write down their digital detox - comes with other prompts that relate. If you are a fan of their other workbooks (Common Cents and You Goal, Girl) you will like this.
Thanks to NetGalley and Rock Point for the ARC of this book! All through college I studied Communication and we talked about the pitfalls of technology all the time. The sleepless nights. The anxiety. The scroll addiction. Meleah Bowles and Elise Williams Rikard have felt this tension and created a workbook to help the process of a digital detox. What does a digital detox look like? It's different depending on the person, but in its essence a digital detox is limited social media usage. This workbook offers tips and tricks to keep your detox on track. Overall, I loved this workbook. It makes a digital detox feel attainable. The authors create a firm basis to start and gives you the motivation to finish. If you're over the social media stress, check out this book!
I found this book really interesting and thought provoking.
I loved the journaling prompts in this book and the alternative ways to spend time away from social media.
I feel like this book could help a lot of people as technology really is taking over people’s lives and as the book says, even a little time away from it can help a lot.
As much as I loved this book, I did feel some of parts were a little bit repetitive.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to spend a little bit of time away from social media and focus more on themselves and improving their lives.
“From a self-esteem standpoint, it stands to reason that comparing yourself to every perfect selfie, every snapshot of someone’s life or lifestyle blog is just fuel for the critical voice in your head.”
I really like the look and feel of this book from the hardback cover, the elastic bookmark, calming color scheme, and I appreciate the large, nicely spaced font which makes for easy reading. This is a true workbook in that there are plenty of places to write down notes, journal, create goals, challenges, and worksheets to manage your detox plan including a habit tracker. The book includes an introduction, acknowledgments, and a resources section, and the following chapters: digital detox defined, slow and steady, minimalism and mindfulness, optimizing your offline options, maintenance mode, ready set detox, and journal it out. My favorite is the maintenance mode chapter which includes tips such as turning off push notifications and forgiving yourself if you slip up and getting back on track. It also includes a suggestion for using the Pomodoro technique to limit your digital time.
The authors foster a kind and gentle zen-like approach to detox, focusing on alternate activities such as mediation and journaling. They don’t expect you to go cold turkey on avoiding digital activities. Instead, they recommend a slow approach to make lasting changes. They also support individual goals, rather than a one size fits all plan.
While there is so much I like about the layout, the message, the tools, and style, I would have liked more content. For me, this is a three and a half star read, rounded up to four stars.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks to Amazon and Rock Point, an imprint of the Quarto Group, for providing a review Copy.
This is the best book... workbook... journal I've read so far regarding the toxic effects of being constantly connected. The authors go about it in a very light, humorous, and healthy way. They never make you feel like you are a bad person, or that you are wrong. They just want to help you get your life back, as in off the screens and into the real world.
The reasons why a digital detox are necessary for good physical and mental health are provided in clear and simple terms. This isn't a textbook to slog through. It's clear and to the point. Too much screen time or digital time harms our mental health, our work, and our relationships. Overuse of technology can harm our attention span and relationships, disrupt our sleep, and even has the potential to harm our children.
Even with the previous paragraph highlighting many of the negative aspects of constantly being connected, this book is by no means a downer. It is actually very positive and uplifting. It encourages, gives ideas, and hopefully makes you laugh.
Here are a few quotes from the book: "Open Facebook and someone is either getting engaged or sharing opinions no one asked for." "Pop over to Twitter and you'll be bombarded with celebrities yelling at other celebrities for not doing (red: tweeting) enough to solve the world's problems." And my favorite, "What are you going to do with those three and a half hours a day? The time you usually spend looking at what your friends are eating could now be spent doing literally anything..."
The workbook includes plenty of room to answer a plethora of questions to help you on your detox. Things like, "Why I should detox", "I'm detoxing because", and my favorite, "How did I "Go Outside"." There are also questions asking how many hours a day you use various devices, along with a small assortment of challenge sections like "get off the grid" (for example go full dark for a certain period of time).
If you want to explore how much time you actual spend in the digital world, but don't want to be lectured and just want something light, yet attainable, I think you'll really enjoy this little workbook. The goal isn't to remove yourself from the digital world forever, rather it's to help you reconnect with the real world, find yourself again and learn to practice moderation when you are engaged digitally.
Overall, enlightening, fun, & useful. I am more than pleased.
Life Unplugged; A Digital Detox Workbook by Meleah Bowles and Elise Williams Rikard is about how to spend less time staring at a screen and the benefits that it brings. It also tells you about the downsides of looking at a screen.
It gives suggestions for ways you can do this, such as making notes in a notebook rather than on a laptop or tablet. It also gives you suggestions and challenges, such as making the effort to write to a friend rather than sending them a message.
I thought this was a good book if you're looking for suggestions on how to look at a screen less. The challenges were a fun way to do this, so you could see the difference it made to you.
Life Unplugged; A Digital Detox Workbook was published on 24th December 2019, and is available on Amazon , Waterstones and Bookshop.org .

I received a copy of this book through the Amazon Vine program in exchange for an honest review.
This is an interesting idea! This book is a guide to digitally detoxing by reducing screen time and dependency on technology. The book suggests things that you can do instead of scrolling on your phone, such as volunteering or joining a club. It also talks about ways to be accountable and goals you can set for yourself.
The book also has a tracker so you can follow your goals on paper instead of logging them in your phone. It's an interesting idea, although feels a bit overwhelming to start.
This book came to me right when I needed it! I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to find ways of being less dependent on my phone, This book / journal helped me do just that! I love that this is a way to keep track of progress as I detox from digital over-use. The pretty graphics were an added bonus!
Thank you to NetGalley and Rock Point for my copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy, so I can start filling it out!
Um lowkey i already knew all this from articles and stuff bc i wanted to lower my screen time so this was giving amateur blogger But i entered this not knowing digital detox meant actual detox like get off the grid fully unplug no devices at all Thats not happening what do u think this is THE STONE AGE I NEED TV AT LEASTTTT bro please BABY STEPS this did motivate me to get off my phone and write a letter and go along w some of the activities tho
A great book for those who wanted to detox from social life and phone particularly and the workbooks is cherry on top with all those tips . I definitely feel like it's a must book for everyone because everyone need a peace life away from all hustle bustle of our life.
While the topic is a timely and an important topic, the book is not well written. A little juvenile and under researched. Basically a blog entry with lots of pages for notes and full page quotes. Not worth the money. No real new information, no ah-ha moments...
Life Unplugged by Meleah Bowles is a great workbook to help us unplug from modern techonlogy and live a free life from our screens!!
This is a super book and one I will be sticking to as it makes life much easier being away from screens!! Full of tips and helpful advice that are well written adn helpful.
Thanks to Netgalley and Quatro Publishing/Rockpoint for the ARC. My review is my own opinion.
