The Deception

Reuniting with those who were lost is bittersweet as society begins to recover from the effects of the Solar Crash event.

***

When a CME that dwarfs the Carrington Event engulfs the world, Len - a businessman with next to zero survival training and experience - sets off to find his wife and child. Emerging out of the heart of Chicago, he will face dangers of all types and experience both the heights and depths of humanity. His survival depends solely on his ability to learn on the fly in this twisted new hellscape of a world.

From the #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus and author E.S. Richards comes a fresh new take on the EMP/CME story. With characters that are learning how to survive as they go - and finding some unlikely teachers along the way - they represent the true "everyday person" who isn't a hardcore prepper or survivalist, something unique and exciting in this genre.

Solar Crash is a 6-part series that will be published monthly.

Thank goodness this is on KU! I figured I had nothing to lose, but time. And lose time I did. This one also ends on a cliffhanger, but I'm done. The ridiculousness of this 5th book was SO over-the-top.

Len and Amy finally come together at her friend's home, but her friends aren't there and Amy believes they're on vacation. James is ecstatic to have his dad back, and Harrison just sort of wanders around because he's uncomfortable with Len's family.

Harrison is also worried because there is no sign of anyone in the community of Grand Haven, where Amy's friends lived. So, as a matter of course he has to go explore. This is not a bad thing, but what the author came up with to explain why everyone was missing was just STRANGE. Perhaps he was on some good drugs? A psychotic neighbor, Rebecca Brown, somehow knocked out, or somehow or other, got the entire community into her basement, and locked them in a cryogenic chamber that malfunctioned and ended up suffocating them all instead. Yep, you read that correctly. At this point I, literally, threw my hands in the air.

Dixon, miraculously, finds Mary. Mary, coincidentally, manages to outrun a falling skyscraper, and runs right into his loving arms. Sigh, hearts and flowers.

Harrison manages to convince Len and Amy that they HAVE to leave her friends home because... There may be something in the ground or water that will affect them. Apparently we're supposed to believe Rebecca Brown poisoned one or both? Harrison talks them into going to Canada with him to find his daughter. No further mention of Aubrey in this, at all.

Amy gets kidnapped when our "heroes" Harrison and Len allow everyone to stop for lunch. Our very smart prepper, and now devoted husband don't hear 7 people come up on them. 7 gang members? These guys are not black ops, Army Rangers, SEAL's, or Special Forces. But 7 of them sneak up? But, never fear. AFTER a couple guys take Amy, Harrison and Len take down the other 5!

In another coincidence, Harrison and Len find themselves talking to 2 women who were also kidnapped by these bad guys and help them find a way to rescue Amy. Because these ladies, who are threatened with bodily harm, if they act out in any way, will of course help these 2 random dudes rescue 1 women. Who cares about the other 49 or more, right?

At the end we don't know if the rescue plan works or not as we're left with yet another cliffhanger. At this point book 5 is the last one available in this series. I don't care if they rescue Amy or not. I'm done.

Short but exciting book 5. It was a bit disappointed in Harrison and Len as I think their situational awareness should be a lot better at this point. This has a good set up for book 6.
