Despite being published under Viz's BL imprint, this book isn't really about "love." Or rather, it involves some love, but it sure as hell isn't a romance. That's what makes it work - there's lots of sex, but it isn't sexy, there's a guy yearning for another guy, but there isn't really love, and at the end of the day it's about the protagonist looking for a place to belong more than anything else.
It's hard to quantify and even harder to write about. It's nothing like Scarlet Beriko's other two titles available in English. But I do believe that it's worth reading.
Very interesting beginning. Despite what the blurb tells us, the first volume mostly shows Rogi's past and how he tries to get close to Akitora, the young boss of the Oyamoto clan. His motivations aren't quite clear yet. He seems attracted to him and wants to become a member of his clan, but I think there's more to it. I wonder how the very first scene in this volume ties into the story eventually. The story is quite sex-heavy because young Rogi uses his body to seduce people to get his way and get closer to Akitora but I think it works because of the setting and of how it is handled.
I do wonder what kind of role Hachi, the young man who's thrown himself in front of Rogi's car, will play eventually because we haven't seen much of him or Reika, Rogi's daughter, yet. EDIT:
The whole thing is quite mysterious and I'm looking forward to reading the second volume.
Even though the story is rough around the edges, I can't stop thinking about it. Uichi is a great protagonist. He is a wildcard who's down for anything to get what he wants. As of the moment, he's desperate to become a yakuza so he can be with Akitora. And the worst part is, I totally get him. The two of them have great chemistry together. With the way they're drawn to one other like moths to a flame, nothing good can come out of this yet I cannot look away. In addition to the fascinating character dynamics, another thing I like about the story is how brutal it is. In the yakuza world, actions have dire consequences and Scarlet Beriko isn't afraid to let terrible things happen to her characters. Uichi has been playing with fire and he gets burned in the end.
Jealousy will always have a special place in my heart, specially because of Uichi himself. He is a wild animal waiting to get caught. He's both predator and prey in his own story. There’s something self-destructive about the way he chases danger, as if losing himself is part of the thrill. He's not the kind of "heroine" you root for because he's good; you root for him because he’s raw, because you can feel the feral loneliness beneath his arrogance. The tension between him and Akitora is intoxicating, like there's barely any skinship, yet the air between them feels thick enough to burn. But it's not even just about touch, it's about proximity, the unbearable stillness before something happens. Akitora is a highly dangerous man, and Uichi loves walking the edge of that danger, daring him to lose control.
Also, the fourth chapter really struck me so much. Everything that lead to Uichi saying, We're all alone is Scarlet Beriko stripping his character down to nothing, showing that his manipulativeness, his seduction, his chaos are just masks for an unbearable solitude. The people who crave connection the most are the ones who don't know how to survive it. And, Uichi and Akitora, are trapped in that truth; circling a line they know they'll cross eventually, and when they do, it'll ruin them both.
Anyway, the first time I read this was when it was only through rough scans and there's clunky translations but I am beyond grateful for that because without that kind of hardwork, I wouldn't get the chance to get my hands on this wonderful official translations.
*Reread 8/3/2022* This was a good reread. A lot more happened in this volume than I remember. I thought a lot of these events were spread out into the second volume.
This is a prequel/sequel to Fourth Generation Head: Tatsuyuki Oyamato. You follow Rogi who's kind of the antagonist of Fourth Generation Head. The story is told in dual timelines. You get to see Rogi after the events of Fourth Generation and Rogi's past with Tatsuyuki's father.
I was able to grasp a lot more of the yakuza stuff this time especially as I've had 2 years to sit with this series and have read further on. I really love the messiness of it all. There's so much violence and sex, but it's funny and Rogi's just an interesting dude to follow. I really feel for him and I want him to be happy. I'm looking forward to getting to the end of this series and hopefully seeing when he gets his daughter and what happens with the new pet he picked up.
*Original Review 9/20/2020* Original Rating: 3 stars This is all very messy and there's a lot of sex and bondage and the yakuza talk kind of went over my head, but it was honestly kind of a fun read. Rogi is ridiculous and funny. I'm liking this much better than the fourth generation head.
Beriko DIBUJA MUY BIEN.
So I thought this was a different Manga than I wanted to pick up, so surprise story for me I guess. Yakuza and sex pretty much lol 😂 it was entertaining enough and I had also picked up the second volume along with the first again thinking it was a different series I had in mind. we will see if I want to continue to read this or not.
The art style is bloody gorgeous! I was nervous going into this because of but I did end up really enjoying this.
None of the characters are good people really but if you accept that you are reading about Yukuza with different morals and a world that is dark, it does make it easier to enjoy the story and the characters as whole...if that makes any sense.
Still, this entire series really could use some noncon/dubcon warnings!
Interested to see what happens next between the characters and I've also been enjoying he dips back into the present time so show what is happening with Rogi after Fourth Generation Head.
All I have to say is wow. When it says explicate content they mean it. It stars off with a literal bang. {lol} This book was very confusing. It flashes back and forth between I'm assuming Uichi's past and present. It was very sexually charged. I did like the heat between Uichi and Akitora whenever they were together. I don't know it just confused me. I didn't get it but I think I will pick up the next one to see where Uichi and Akitora go from here. It is interesting but very confusing. I liked it. If you like MM and Mafia then you might like this one!
I just didn’t really connect with it. The plot wasn’t gripping me and I didn’t particularly care about any of the characters, so I got bored and DNFed about two thirds in. Gorgeous cover, but not much substance beyond that for me.
A little too dark for me. It’s enthralling in the sense that the atmosphere set up here feels immersive. This story is about how Uichi got involved with the Yakuza. It contains dark themes of murder and rape. There’s a question of how much Uichi is actually controlling and his lack of upset over some of the events in the story made it even darker.
So, I’m sure, if these themes are what you’re looking for, you’ll enjoy it but it’s just not my cup of tea.
