Icehome #6

Devi's Distraction

Rate this book

It's hard to make friends with the other women at the Icehome camp when you'd rather be dissecting the local fauna. Which is why I'm surprised when one of the big, brawny islanders asks me to help him make a prosthetic leg. I don't know N'dek, but since I'm a scientist, he wants my help. And while I'm more into dinosaurs than anatomy, I love a challenge!

As we work together, I come to see that N'dek's not just clever and determined, he's also protective and sweet. And he kisses like a fiend!

He's a distraction I don't need... but he might be everything I've ever wanted. Too bad he says he's going to resonate to someone else...

Ruby Dixon is killing it with the Icehome series. She is bringing her ‘A game’ and it shows in this wonderful intertwined, spin-off series. If you have been following my reviews then you know how much I adore Ruby and her writing. Aliens have never had so much appeal until she began writing her take on them.

(I think this one is my new favorite.)

Devi was a college student when she was abducted by aliens. She talks about how dedicated she was to her schooling and how it upset her grandmother. She was suppose to be getting married and be having children while she was young. Her career needed to wait. Luckily, she made the right decision not going down that path because now, like I said, she has been abducted. Staying positive on a new planet isn’t easy, but she has found her niche dissecting the local wildlife – to her new friends’ horror. She’s an outsider, but she isn’t willing to stop doing the one thing she loves just to fit in.

N’dek was literally just a bump on a log. He sat around the fire constantly until his pal ran off with his mate, leaving him with no one to drag him around. He just sits and listens to everyone talk about the games they will be competing in. It is suppose to help relieve some of the tension and build some stronger friendships. But how can he even participate without his leg. That’s when he gets the crazy idea to make a prosthetic. There is only one person that is smart, and quiet, enough to help him – Devi.

It has been a while since I had really swooned after one of Ruby’s barbarians. Well, N’dek just broke dry spell for me. He’s lovely. I really loved how much he loved Devi.

Devi is so filled with joy, with a love of life. I need that. I want that. I feel whole when I am near her.

It might be many turns of the moons before my khui wakes, if it ever does. Until then. . . I want Devi. And I do not care if that is wrong.

“But I would rather have you for one day than regret it for all of them.”

Totally swoon-worthy, right?
While N’dek brings all the feels, Devi brings all the laughs.

And there’s Bridget and A’tam. They flirted, they slept together, and now he thinks they’re married and she thinks he should die in a fire.

You’ve seen porn. You saw Game of Thrones. This is just another penis.

You put the two of them together and it is magical. This is a must read if you love paranormal romances – or just Ruby’s writing in general.

Overall Opinion: This series is a good one for when I want to step out of my box and to help me with a book slump. I wasn't disappointed. I liked both characters and they seemed perfect for one another. My biggest gripe is probably that there wasn't much conflict and it was a little too...easy. I know many many readers will love it just for that though! It was enjoyable. I wouldn't say I loved it or hated it, it was a little better than "just okay" 3 stars for me.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Devi and N'dek's story. They know each other around camp, but N'dek seeks out Devi when he needs help making a prosthetic leg for the one that he is partially missing and she is the smartest and most discrete of the human females. They form a friendship that quickly turns into more. However, N'dek has a feeling his resonance is coming and with another female, so they both are hesitant to start anything up between them. There are some sweet moments, some suspenseful scenes, and some sexy times...and they get a HEA ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Devi and N'dek's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and thought it flowed well.

Instalove: Kind of. They move quickly in the feelings department.

H (Hero) rating: 3.5 stars. N'dek. I liked him, but I feel like we could've gotten a little deeper with his character.

h (heroine) rating: 4 stars. Devi. I liked her. She was strong, smart, and sweet!

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Not really

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes, but very mild

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: No

Possible Triggers: Not really

Closure: This had pretty good closure, but I wanted a little bit more if I'm being honest. I'd call it a HEA though .

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

Another good story!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 😌😎🙃😮

The heroine: Devi - she is a paleophysiologist and is very interested in the flora and fauna of her new world. She is a bit of a loner and likes to spend her time on the beach dissecting the animals she finds and the ones that are washed up on the beach.

The Hero(es): N’Dek - he is of the strong arm clan, which means he has 4 arms. He was injured back home and lost part of one leg below the knee. He has been kind of a grouch and a bit lazy, feeling sorry for himself because he was such a strong hunter and he felt that he couldn’t contribute anymore.

The Story: N’Dek sees that Devi is intelligent and asks her if she can make him some sort of prosthetic leg. He doesn’t want anyone else to know in case it doesn’t work out. So after everyone else goes to bed, the two of them work together on their project and get to know each other.

After Bridget makes an offhand remark, N’Dek thinks he will soon resonate and he figures it will be with Bridget. He wants to know more about human females so that when he does resonate he will know how to please her, so he asks Devi about humans. They talk more and more each night and get closer.

These two were very cute together and I liked the romance between them. I liked how N’Dek is surprised that Devi doesn’t look at him like he is less of a man. Devi is such a nerdy girl that she is adorable, especially when she starts talking about the animals she dissects.

Like the rest in the series, this book was told in dual points of view via dual narration. The narrators are Sean Crisden and Felicity Munroe. Felicity’s voice is perfect for Devi and especially cute when she goes on and on about her work on the beach. Sean has a nice deep voice and his pitch and cadence work well for the alien males.

N'dek lost part of his leg in a hunting accident a few months ago. He feels like less of a "hunter" and spends all of his time sitting around the fire doing nothing. At the beginning of this book, he decides that he wants to walk again, so he asks Devi to make a prosthetic for him.

Devi misses her family, but she's excited to be on the Ice Planet. She's interested in fossils and anatomy, so she spends her time examining whatever washes up on the beach.

I was worried that this book would have a bit of a love-triangle because of the hints from the last book, but it didn't. Both Devi and N'dek were only interested in each other and it was really sweet.

It was nice to see more of N'dek's personality after he started to except his limitations and worked to improve his life. I liked Devi most of the time, too, but she annoyed me when she yelled at Tia and made her cry.

On a side note, I'm kind of tired of reading books about people hanging out on the Icehome beach. I want something more to happen.

Before reading:

I am as excited to read this as I am for that cover...that cover!!

After reading:

Rating:
5 stars - I will give it a 6 if possible...

Trigger:
Too much (and maybe slightly inaccurate) dino and Indian culture information. It is not a trigger but some people like me find it mildly annoying...

Short review:
I might be little obsessed with this series. But on my God! it's so good. Indian geeky girl stangentend on alien planet, yes please.

Review in image/gif:
Oh, to show you how obsessed I might be

Recommended:
Yes, but part of the series - not a standalone.

Aftermath: (possible spoilers)
While I might be annoyed, with some South Indian girl calling her grandmother 'nani' (they never call them 'nani' it is 'awa'), Devi's character is geeky and so adorable. She is funny without trying, smart without showing. My kind of gurl...

Cute story, but SUPER slow burn. N'dek and Devi made for a perfect pairing.

Quick synopsis: N'dek is one of the islanders in the Strong Arm clan (the dudes with 4 arms) who lost one of his legs during a hunting trip months before arriving on the frozen beach. He has mostly felt sorry for himself since, and he is tired of the piteous looks he gets from others, especially the human women as he believes his one-legged status ensures he will never find his mate.

Devi is a researcher that is trying to make the best out of her stranded on a frozen planet situation by studying the various alien forms of life and trying to determine which are related and what characteristics they share or differ. Most of the other people on the beach think she's a little off her rocker, but when N'dek asks who the smartest of the human women is and Devi's name is given, he approaches her about helping him fashion a false leg so that he might be able to attract a mate as he has a feeling that he will resonate soon. Since others have said Bridget will probably be the next human female to resonate, N'dek thinks that she will likely be his mate so he must be ready to provide for her. But Bridget doesn't seem to have the kind of affect Devi has on him, and he can't resist giving into the passion he feels for Devi with kisses and touches that leave them both breathless. What will happen when N'dek resonates to Bridget? Will Devi find happiness with another?

Plot --- 3/5
Main Characters --- 3.5/5
Supporting Cast --- 3.5/5
Steam Level* --- 3/5/5
Violence --- nothing overly graphic or major
Language --- yes! (lots of f-bombs and c-bombs)
POV --- Dual

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

Dr. Devi Balasubramanian has always been a loner as not many people share her love of all things fossils.

As a Paleontologist there really isn't much call for her skills in this new world except Devi feels that by examining the current life form biodiversity washing up on the beaches she can contribute value, though her fellow tribemates don't yet realize how that could be.

Words. Words. Words. All the human females do is talk words that confuse N'dek though why he should care is the mystery. Having lost part of his leg, his value to his tribe as a hunter and a potential mate for the females is long gone. His only purpose now is to tend the fire pit and wait for the fates to end is misery through death.

It is only when one of the human females mimics having the horns of his fellow hunters that an idea comes to mind. Creating an artificial leg that could help him walk again and be the man he once was. He just needs to find someone who is smart enough to help him achieve that dream.

* * * *

In this the seventh installment of the "Ice House" series N'dek finally gets his story. I have long wondered why the idea of crutches was never introduced for N'dek as for the most part he was dependent on J'shel and the others to cart him around all the time. I'd be depressed too if that was me. A proud warrior hunter who has standing in his community forced to be carried and could only tend a fire. Totally agitated as his fellow tribe never did anything other than enable that.

OK. Onto the actual story. For the most part it's an evolving romance story line between Devi & N'dek. There's angst. There's evolving sexual feelings that I liken to a baseball game (first base, second base, third base, and eventually a home run). There's even a love triangle of sorts angle. What there isn't is a meaningful action-adventure-twist-crisis for the characters to deal with. To clarify, there is a hurdle to deal with but it really doesn't have much meat to it.

Secondary characters. This would be the only concern I'd have for any potential new reader to the series. There is a core cast of characters who each get their own book/story but each installment can be read as a standalone as long as the reader realizes they may lose some degree of understanding individual character profiles. Only new character in this story is kaari, which I would definitely not see wanting as a pet myself.

In all actuality this is one of the better installments written by this author in recent times, I enjoyed the back and forth interactions between Devi & N'dek as they came to realize they really didn't need resonance to validate their relationship, though it sure does help. 😘

Devi is an outsider in the Icehome camp. Her interest in dissecting and understanding the local beasties isn’t very conductive to building friendships…it seems to make the other human women squeamish and baffles the alien men. N’dek knows that his missing leg makes him useless and unappealing to females. He cannot hunt and provide, so who would want to be his mate? However, when inspiration strikes, he knows exactly which female will be able to help execute his plan to regain his independence.

My heart gives a massive sigh of contentment when I think about Devi’s Distraction. This book was satisfying on a couple of different levels. We have the two outsiders coming together and finding belonging…and then also realising that they were never really outsiders. And we have N’dek taking control of his destiny and finding ways to embrace life with only one leg. This book packed a lot in a short number of pages – Devi’s Distraction was under 200 pages.

This book has Dixon’s signature mix of humour, adorable alien male antics and red hot sexy times. This book also set up some of the other characters in Icehome and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this small human-alien village!

One of my favs in the Ice Home series! I loved these characters as a pair (the world weary cynic with the wide eyed idealist is a great combo) but I also loved the journey that each of them went on as individuals to become the kind of people who could be happy together. I loved seeing N'dek making peace with what happened to him & how Devi supported him as he adapted to his prosthetic leg

I am not sure how many times I’ve reread this book at this point, because it’s my fave of the Icehome series. Both of these MCs are well fleshed out and feel like outcasts. Devi is autistic coded and info dumps nonstop, which I adore. N’dek is an amputee in a world where he’s never seen a prosthetic (that he recognizes as one), Devi’s blunt sunshine-y energy is everything he needs and he grounds her while still supporting her passions. They are absolutely perfect for each other.

Spice: 3.5/5

Triggers: depression, mention of abduction, grief, animal attack, hypothermia, threat of drowning

OG review: Devi is manic pixie dream girl 2.0. She has such a passion for science and is unashamed of it. N’Dek went through so much healing and accepted her completely for who she was. I loved that the author addressed depression without shying away from lack of hygiene being a common issue. It is painfully difficult to do basic things when your brain is sick.

This is one of those cases where the summary of the book really doesn't do it justice. From what I read, I assumed that it'd be a complicated romance with, again, a lot of angst to get through before the good stuff, but oh, how wrong I was! This is just about the sweetest, fluffiest, most terrific friendship-to-romance story in this series so far! Next to Willa's Beast, I'm definitely calling it out as my favourite and adding Devi alongside Willa and Veronica as my favourite heroines of the Icehome series!

Like more or less most people reading this series, of course N'dek was one of the characters that I was the most curious about, since he is, after all, the moody and sulky one who doesn't say much. Pairing him up with the "nerdy" scientist girl was a brilliant move on Dixon's part, I say, and especially with the hook to get them together!

The whole "resonate to someone else" plot point was something I thought I'd really hate, but I went into this book deciding to bear with it just because I was curious to see what kind of story N'dek would have. At one point, we do have sort of a love...pentagon going on, but it's more hilarious than angsty and really just makes me love both Devi and N'dek all the more. They're a couple that you'll actively be cheering for from start to finish, and it's great that they have the backdrop of the beach games to kickstart their relationship and interactions with everyone. It's just...awesome!

As a final note, I'd also like to give a shout-out to Devi's character overall, which I felt was really well developed. I mean, each of the female characters have unique personalities and whatnot thus far, but so far Devi's only been mentioned as the girl who never shuts up, and so I really expected her to be annoying. Kudos to Dixon for making her lovable and interesting instead!

Onward to the next book--and possibly more or less everything that Dixon's written so far, haha!

Devi’s Distraction is book six in the Icehome series by Ruby Dixon.

Dev is smart, intelligence, and well rounded. Instead of wallowing on being stuck on the ice plant she focuses her energy on learning about all the different animals. Her interest in the wild life makes her an outsider in the Icehome camp.

N’dek is missing a leg. To him that makes him useless and unappealing to the females. He’s been depressed since he lost his leg, but now he wants to live life again.

This was one of my favorite reads. My heart sighed with delight and contentment. We have the two outsiders coming together. They find belonging and home. Dev and N’dek work together to make a prosthetic for N’dek and he finally take's control of his destiny. I loved the budding romance and how sweet they are together.

It’s got Dixon’s signature writing with duel POV’s, humor, sexy aliens, and spicy times. It sets up other characters in the Icehome. I can’t wait to read on. I recommend this series and any Dixon book.

I think I’m done with this series. This book was just ho hum after a few other of the same. The problem is that since mates are chosen by the whole resonance thing there is a large chunk of conflict potential that is just not available. The stories are always going to fall into a pretty limited set of constraints. There is not even a pretense of a chance that the H/h are not going to end up together. Plus no one ever resonates to someone they honestly don’t like. No true loves are broken up by a resonance to a third person. It’s just here are these two pretty nice people who might have a minor squabble but then they resonate and have wild monkey sex and a baby, the end.

All that is not to say that I haven’t had a great time with this series but I think I’m moving on now.

Devi’s Distraction, book 7 in the Ice Home series is now one of my favs in the series! I loved Devi and N’dek together and that they fell for one another before resonance too!

Devi, so far the only Indian woman on the planet and a scientist! Her fascination with the plants and animals on the planet was everything. Her discoveries were super intriguing for the world. N’dek is from clan Strong Arm and is tired of missing a leg, tired of others pitying him, and having to be carried around like a kit. So he decides to ask Devi for help, and she is able to make a prosthetic leg for him. Along the way they become friends and start to fall for one another and I loved seeing it!

N’dek thinks he will resonate soon and wants Devi’s help in understanding human women better and what they like, but as soon as he starts asking her questions he realizes he wants to know what Devi will like. Devi is equally fascinated and open with N’dek about how their anatomy is different here than earth men. I liked that N’dek finds Devi’s scientific pursuits fascinating and loved how she treats him as just another male. This was a sweet one with resonance coming a lot later in the story!

Devi and N’dek’s story! Devi is a scientist so she is enjoying the new creatures and ice age period of the planet. N’dek befriends her because she is smart and could help make her a prosthetic leg without telling anyone in case it does not work. They are such a cute couple and I love that they decided to be mates before resonance kicked in. As always, this is just a feel good happy love story.

This one was interesting because it seemed like both Devi and N'dek were misfits. Devi because of her fascination with where they were, almost a dream come true to study all the things around her and N'dek due to his wallowing in a pity party for loosing his leg.

I was happy when N'dek realized that he could make a leg, that by doing that he could be more mobile. I loved that he asked Devi for help, she was the perfect person with her intellect. I liked the friendship that they developed and how they were able to surprise the rest of the tribe when N'dek showed up walking. I also loved that N'dek was able to compete in the games and won handily.

The ending to this one was perfect, loved that both Devi and N'dek resonated to someone they already cared about.

Another Steamy Sci-fi-Romance-Adventure by Ruby Dixon!

Devi's Distraction is among by favorites of the Ice Planet Barbarians and Ice Home series. It is so hard to pick an all-time-favorite, because Ruby Dixon does such a great job of making these characters real and different, along with unique challenges that each resonating couple must overcome.

A socially out of step heroine...

I adore Devi, a scientist-nerd who is socially out of step with the rest of the humans, but who is also innocent, sweet, and kind hearted. Her excitement over the anatomy of the dead creatures she finds washed up on the beach is endearing as is her cup-half-full way of dealing with suddenly finding herself stranded for the rest of her life on a planet far from home. She throws herself into the new life with excitement about learning all she can. She knows she is different and accepts that about herself. Rather than bemoaning that she has no close BFF’s, she chooses to focus on experiencing all the new wonders and possibilities.

An injured hero struggling with a recent disability...

N’Dek of the Strong-Arm Clan immediately tugged at my heart strings. On an ill-fated hunting trip with his clan brother J’shell, N’dek narrowly survived a battle with a crocodilian-like kaar that bit off one of his legs before J’shell finally killed it. Not long after that, their volcanic island exploded in a devastating eruption that plunged what was left beneath the ocean. Survivors of the island clans swam to the icy shore, where they joined the humans in their struggle to assimilate into a new life, a different native tribe, and an frigid environment so different from the steamy jungle island that was their home.

Still suffering physical and emotional pain from the loss of his leg, and humiliated by his need to be carried everywhere he would go, N’dek spends most of his time morosely staring into the flames of the main camp fire. That is where he is first noticed by Devi, who begins to pull him out of his depression by speaking to him without pity and treating him normally. When N’dek gets the idea to try and make.a prosthetic leg for himself, it is Devi he confides in; and, she is eager to apply herself to the challenge.

Their steamy romance will warm your heart (and more)!

I want to keep going and tell you about the great story, but no spoilers! If you are already a fan of Ice Planet Barbarians and Ice Home, you will love Devi's Distraction. If the series are new to you, I recommend starting with Ice Planet Barbarians. If you love steamy romance with human women, alien men, and sci-fi survival adventure stories, then you will likely join the legions of adoring Ruby Dixon fans who eagerly await each new book, as do I!

I’ve finally reached IPB/IH books I’ve never read before 🥳🙏 that being said, this was fine… I’m still listening to these on audiobook while I work so I’m gonna be honest that I don’t pay as much attention as I would if I were actually reading 😅 but I liked quirky, misunderstood Devi. Truly the planet is a treasure trove for the science-inclined and I have a soft spot especially for paleontology because I work at a paleontology museum so kinda fun to imagine alien paleontology😅 I also liked that N’dek finally took charge of his life and was able to see past what happened to him and find value in himself and want to live again after losing his limb. They were a fun pair and I like that N’dek is so supportive of Devi’s arguably useless profession that grosses and freaks everyone out 😌 #truelove
