When I took a job on an oil rig I knew I’d be working alongside rugged men, but I didn’t expect to end up with a tough-as-nails Marine as my boss, and I definitely didn’t plan on falling in love.

Whose your Daddy!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💚💛
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📙📔📗
World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎
Character development: 👤👤👤👤

The setting: An oil rig in the ocean

The Hero: Jack Stone – after leaving the marines, he is now running an oil rig. His best friend hired Summer to do welding on the rig after checking her references and previous position.

The heroine: Summer Carter – mistreated at home by her shady step-father, she gets applies for a welding job on an oil rig. She is hired due to knowledge learned on YouTube welding videos and she takes welding classes before she begins. She learns more on the job but when that position is downsized she gets a job on Jack’s crew.

The Love Story: Summer was trying to be a tough girl on an oil rig, she somehow thought she would fit in better if she cursed a lot and treated the men like they were beneath her. However, it just ended up looking like she was a foul-mouthed brat. Jack is her supervisor and he gets right away that she doesn’t want to be sent back to her parents, so he gives her an ultimatum.

This was one of the dumbest premises I have ever seen. He is her supervisor, and she was definitely misbehaving but he tells her she can either be fired and sent home to “Mommy and Daddy” or she can get disciplined by him, which includes spanking, calling him “Daddy”, and more. Sexual harassment to the extreme.

I don’t mind some BDSM in romance novels, but this stretched the concept of power exchange too far for me. Plus the whole daddy dom/little girl role playing for me always turns a steamy scene into something a bit too silly and frankly kind of gross. I end up hearing this stupid baby talk voice in my head and it just ruins everything. I know some people really like the Daddy kink but I just can’t get into it, so I like it when the title of blurb calls that out ahead of time.

Though I have to admit, since I kept reading, I did start to like the storylines about Jack’s father and his ranch and about Summer’s issues with her stepfather. I got caught up with wanting to find out what exactly was going on and wanting the characters to find out the truth. I really ended up liking the story quite a bit despite the Daddy stuff. This one is extremely steamy and has a intriguing story!

I had some issues reading this one....the story was compelling and you were able to get to know the characters. The mystery was there, the plot twist and all, but...

I had some concerns with their first interaction, in my opinion it felt a bit abusive/rape-y. What he did to her just because he couldn't help himself, she was basically blackmailed by him, either "accept" the punishment or get tossed out of the job.

I get that you "deserve" a spanking when you are out of line, but daily spankings just because; even if she did nothing wrong? WTF!?! And for all the spunk that she has to just take it?

And when she was finally brave enough to tell him her secrets he just wouldn't listen and be done with her...what about always wanting to protect her? the least she deserved after everything was sorted out was an apology...but what did she got instead? a whipping!!

For all the sense of rightfulness and all that he demanded, he sure as is not capable of that.

Summer takes a job as a welder on an oil rig to escape her stepfather’s plans to set her up with one of his friends. Jack is a former Marine and now Summer’s supervisor on the oil rig. Jack is more than happy to punish her as he sees fit, which means spankings from her “Daddy”. Will her stepfather let her go that easily however and can Jack keep her safe? Fast-paced read with of the charts hot steam and plenty of drama and suspense. I loved it!

I was very excited to read a new Piper Stone entry after her circuit-melting "Rogue", and I wasn't disappointed here. Said with love: oh my, her stories can get wet and dirty. Our hero Jack is a sexy former E-8 Texan (oh, I can hear that twang!) and Summer has plenty of ill-tempered sass to earn her daddy's discipline.

I felt the heat level here went down once Jack & Summer left the rig to head to ranch, but that's when the actual intrigue of the story starts to build, so I can really complain other than the fact that I'm pervy & just in this for the spanking.

Piper Stone is fast-becoming my new favorite schmutz author, and I will continue to follow her erotic oeuvre.

Still dern confused

Book made no dern sense to actually think a young girl college educated or not could study welding on YouTube and managed to learn enough to lie her way onto an oil rig BS!! There isn't any way that would ever work welding isn't something u can just learn over YouTube yeah u can learn the basics but then it takes a crap ton of hands on experience. Second I am still freaking clueless what the heck that was all about I know her mother managed to set a secret trust fund that she could only touch when she turned 25 or got married but none of the other stuff she said made any dern sense I just didn't care for this one at all sorry

Jacked up! Strict, hot and loving!!

Summer is a woman on the run, haunted by her past, betrayal and losses. She is a young woman in emotional pain and lashes out at those around her. A firecracker with little to no control, a mouth and attitude that sets of reactions all around. She calls out for help without even knowing it.
Jack is all dominant and knows that Summer is in need of discipline, love, control, a sense of belonging, stability and guidance. He is just the man to step up and give her everthing she needs, including spankings, hot freakin sex and a "Daddy" that will bring out the best in her and love her.
There is some danger, action, intrigue, coercion, family issues, secrets unearthed and revealed, misunderstandings, an act of great love, great characters and a story that is a hot bedtime read! What a daddy!.....sigh😉

There is a light level of discipline/age play in this book. The plot is not credible at all and starts with Summer - who is supposed to be intelligent, hiding out on an oil rig (of all places) but drawing attention to herself by being loud, rude, insulting and unprofessional. The dynamic between herself and Jack is quite entertaining and if you can ignore the glaring flaws in the plot regarding how the situation with her stepfather is resolved, it can be an enjoyable read. It is supposed to be lighthearted fantasy after all. I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an advance review copy.

This is yet another well written (technically at least) novel I was not able to finish due to a heroine (Summer) I absolutely LOATHED.
I understand this is a fantasy romance but it strained credulity that of ALL places for a person who is prone to childish temper tantrums, out of control emotions, to yelling profanities at fellow workers (for no other reason then to -sound- tough), an oil platform in the ocean seems FRAUGHT with DEADLY potential consequences. SERIOUSLY! And this is where the reader finds (& hears) Summer off the bat. Screaming/yelling profanities at her fellow welders is beyond unprofessional & ludicrist. And again, I understand she's got 'issues' & she's a 'little' & 'bratting', but to reiterate: on an oil platform? REALLY?!
I applaud the author for taking erotic romance readers to a new environment but I truly believe all Summer's proclivities, actions & mouthing off could have been handled differently. For me, Summer most definitely DID NOT come across as tough or can do: she came across as an incredibly out of control & unnecessarily aggressive heroine who was causing dangerous & UNNECESSARY distractions, frustration & anger among people doing a hard & dangerous job far from any type of support or assistance. Not to mention she lied & fudged about her experience: I am still not sure if she took -some- classes in welding or got all her welding info from UTube videos (hmmmm . . . . ).
So all this behavior (or lack thereof), forces Jack Stone (H) to 'handle' Little Miss Trouble in his quarters & over his knee, where she'll end up numerous times the reader suspects. He's Alpha, ex-military, hard, tough & no nonsense (the type of Hero I love) & he's drawn to Summer physically & her need to be disciplined & controlled.
And then, after an intense punishment & erotic session with Jack, she immediately does something in the Mess that just exacerbates division, distraction & unrest among the crew. That's where I stopped.
So, maybe Summer grows up, or calms down with Jack's guidance & discipline, but I'll never know.
Again the author's writing was excellent technically (hence the 4 stars) but the actions of Summer on a oil platform as well as her truly reprehensible, out of control & LOATHESOME (again, to ME) character shot this one down for me. However, I suspect most readers will love this one.

Great Story & Narration🎧 Captivating & Intense!

Roughneck
A Dark Romance
By: Piper Stone
Narrated by: Thomas Locklear

I enjoyed this great book, it is well written and well told with interesting storylines that are captivating from start to end. Piper Stone is a gifted author, she creates stories that are on the dark and twisted side, she’ll keep you on your toes and possibly take you out of your comfort zone yet you’ll love every minute of it. The characters are complex and well developed, of the two leads Jack was my favorite, a swoon worthy cowboy and former Marine who has a lot of heart. Summer grew on me and by the end she redeemed herself. She was running and hiding from her life and evil step father, she took a job on an oil rig with hopes he would not find her. Jack, an alpha Dom was her supervisor and he knew just how to deal with her to rid her bratty ways by making her submit to him. The chemistry between the two was smoking hot. He knew she had secrets but she was not ready to share or reveal them. Jack receives a call from his Dad telling him about a problem with the ranch so he heads home to deal with it and takes Summer along with him. He finds out his father is in danger of losing the ranch and Jack is determined to get to the bottom of things and set things right. He turns up more than he bargained for, lies, deceit and more. I love how everything plays out in this book, the story is fast paced and nicely plotted and there is never a dull moment with plenty of drama, angst, twists and turns, thrilling and suspenseful moment, heartfelt ones and some hot kink and romance. Piper Stone, thank you for another great story.

I listened to the Audible edition, Thomas Locklear is a terrific narrator and voice artist. He does an amazing job portraying the characters bringing them to life giving each their own voice and personalty as well as attitude. His take on Jack was perfection, he also did great with Summer’s too. You could hear how much heart he put into her work as he captures and projects the characters emotions in to his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧

Fabulous Plot and Delicious Heat!

Overall: 5 of 5 stars Performance: 5 of 5 stars Story: 5 of 5 stars
Reviewed: 04-14-24

Jack Stone, former marine, dominating and protective, he runs the oil rig with a firm hand, and doesn’t tolerate deception … Summer Carter, a fiery, female welder with attitude … and secrets… they are a mix like oil and water. If THAT situation isn’t volatile enough, there’s those with nefarious designs lurking about … waiting for their opportunity … Packed with intrigue, mystery, and twists worthy of a pretzel factory, “Roughneck” really delivers! The writing, the characters, the narration, EVERYTHING I need for supremely delicious romantic suspense listening is here; perfectly presented, smooth flowing, emotional, and perfect! I had more than a few “edge of the my seat moments”, both action and emotion related, BUT never drawn out overly long! The timing on everything is perfect! The story never lags, and I’m never wanting to skip parts! The characters are fantastic! All are throughly developed and clearly defined! I really loved Summer and Jack! Oh, and Riley! I’d love HIS story! I really got to KNOW the characters, ALL the characters. If I felt like I wanted to pop someone, you can be sure that WAS the author’s intent, and I’m pretty sure, when YOU listen, you’ll feel the same! This thrilling, emotional, beautiful story was dynamically and dramatically brought to life by fantastic narration! Every single character, male or female, was clearly, consistently, AND uniquely voiced with perfectly chosen, perfectly timed, emotionally compelling, character voicing! Narration that left no doubt what the characters were thinking, feeling, experiencing at any given time, truly bringing the author’s vision exquisitely alive! I loved everything about this beautiful collaboration of writing and performance excellence! Five fantastic stars!

Definitely for adults only!

This is a “daddy / baby girl” themed story with lots of dominance and submission (but with a lot of sass). It has a lot of adult language, loads of steamy detailed intimate scenes (I estimate that at least 50% of the story are intimate scenes) and violence.

There are also consensual / non-consensual acts, spanking for punishment / pleasure, restraints, as well as dominant / submissive themes throughout.

Let me say that i understand the intent is to provide an escape for the reader by highlighting discipline, dominant alpha male to take care of, protect, and make the female feel secure in all ways.

I struggled with the rating a little because the plot is there, but could (and should) be developed. There are a couple of places were the scenes need work (I.e. positions of bodies; at one location, then suddenly at another; a person was / wasn’t in the scene, but now they aren’t / are). Only a couple of grammatical issues, which made it easy for me as a reader (much appreciated).

The hardest part for me involves my background (former manager) and in the beginning she is manhandled and coerced into “choosing to be spanked” by her manager on the oil rig. These themes are difficult for a lot of people, as it is assault, forced confinement / potential kidnapping, etc., but especially in light of recent events with women and harassment in the workplace, made it even more so.

In the end, I rated it 4 stars as I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys this genre, or just enjoys an excessive amount of intimate scenes with a plot holding them all together.

Our heroine is hiding out from her evil step-father on an oil rig. Unfortunately, the term "low key" isn't in her vocabulary and she is soon drawing lots of attention from the other workers.

That is not, however, a set up for a menage. One man takes her under his control with D/S, spankings and some daddy dom action in an attempt to keep her from causing dissent among the workers. He is at least partially successful.

I am not sure what to make of this story. The writing is good and the setting is unusual, with lots of men that could support this kind of story in a number of different ways. There is a nefarious plot by the step-father, but it is too nebulous. We don't get enough details soon enough to give us any sense of danger. Instead, we get an unlikable heroine who is acting like a spoiled brat and disrupting the work at the facility with her antics. There are lots of steamy scenes, but they are not enough to make up for the overall frustration with narrative.

The result is a story that I had to struggle to read. If your interest is strictly on the daddy dom theme in an unusual setting, this story will be good for you. But if you want even a little realism and a likable heroine, you might want to find a different read.

I guess what makes this a dark romance is Jack and Summer's relationship. Overlooking the fact that Summer allowed Jack to take certain liberties that do not normally occur in an employer/employee relationship, Summer was irritating.

She seemed to lack any type of self control. Interestingly enough, the Summer at the start of the book did not seem to be the same Summer that was on John and Jack's ranch.

I found it to be very frustrating that you got these drips and drabs about Summer's step father, what he was up to, and how it connected to Summer. Added to the frustration was her unwillingness to tell Jack what was going on with the entire situation. There was a twist that I did not expect at the beginning of the book, but as you read further into it, it proves to be not as surprising.

The other interesting piece was the continuing mention of the step daughter Diedre, who never had a voice. The whole step father trying to control Summer was also kind of creepy.

Th storyline was interesting, even if it was convoluted. There was mystery, intrigue, suspense, danger, and romance. There was also spanking and an abundance of sex. It all leads to a HEA of sorts. If any of the behavior contained in this book is offensive to you, I would take a pass.

The story starts out really interesting. I personally have never read a story in which the characters work on an oil rig and expected some tension with accidents that could happen etc. The reader got like one of those and the FMC who learned how to be a welder in a class just shortly before got burned. But the injury got dropped really quickly and I just can't believe that the FMC was spouting about knowing it better all the time when she was a newbie with zero experience and was supposed to lay low...
And also there comes a point at which you just have to vomit because all this hero and honor talk makes you nauseous. There should be a good ratio about talking about it and the actual actions that show the strength of the hero. And this ratio was just really off here.

I didn't enjoy the second part of the book because it was just too much talk and so little brain and action. The characters had to articulate every little thing that was going on and were guessing around when it was really quite obvious what was happening and how the ranch and the FMC were connected.

Piper Stone writes good spicy scenes but the parts that are supposed to stimulate the brain are just too convoluted.

I really like Piper Stone's writing, and she does write this novel well as usual. But the main characters, Jack and Summer are difficult to like. Yes Jack is hot, but he admits that he oversteps the boundaries with Summer. He is her boss, and though she is a major brat, and he does apply discipline with her reluctant consent, he takes her sexually without that consent. She soon enjoys it, likes it that he is a hunk and rough, but continues to act out to get his attention. She is hiding from her evil stepfather, so you would think she would be trying to keep a low profile on the oil rig, but instead she brings intense attention to herself by throwing huge tantrums, and cussing outrageously insulting her fellow workers. And it is a wonder that she landed a job on the rig, and wasn't immediately discovered as a fraud. But that said, the chemistry between Jack and Summer is hot, the sex is hot, the discipline is hot. That part of the book will not disappoint.

Summer is on the run from her step father. A man she hates after the death of her mother, Summer saw just how evil her step father was so She took a job on a rig to hide but to also show him she could stand on her own two feet.
But Summer has got sassy mouth on her and when you are on a rig surrounded by men trying to tell them how to do their jobs it was only going to end one way. In front of her supervisor. But Jack does things differently. Jack can see she is a spoil little brat and there is only one way to treat her, a good spanking. But he gives her a choice. 1 He contacts her parents and she get a one way off the rig or 2 take the spanking she deserves and follow orders. Summer has no choice but she wasn't expecting what happened next.
Oh this is tooooo good. I couldnt put this book down and had to finish it in one sitting. Who needs sleep when you get when you get sucked into a story. This book is delicious!!!!

★ Handful of bratty wildcat ★

—>>> Summer Carter is a twenty-two-year-old welder on Supervisor Jack Stone’s rig, but her swearing, rudeness, and blatant disrespect for the other oil riggers does not bode well for their making their tight work schedule. Jack has his work cut out for him to take this veritable firecracker literally in hand himself and soon learns that she has more issues than just her nasty attitude, even though her complaints may be merited - she has big secrets, as well, big enough to run from.

When Jack is called back home to Texas to deal with impending disclosure on his family ranch, he brings Summer with him, and they indulge in themselves until Summer’s past catches up, and then there is no longer any room for her in his life as secrets and mistrust and fears are brought to light.

Super hot & steamy disciplining of a firecracker and bratty girl, who really does need him to keep her in line as well as his help.

providing a review after receiving a complementary copy from the author.

had some problems with this one.

if you are on the run and are in desperate need of your job (which she lied to get, not even sure how she managed that) why would you be going out of your way to draw attention to your self, swearing and causing fights? you wouldn't! you would lay low and do your job with out drawing notice to your self.

There was too much intrigue going on and I didn't like that his friend and ex were part all her baggage she was running from.

come on didn't all the spanking seem extremely excessive too everyone else. sound more like assault then some thing sexy.

the relationship didn't start from a place of attraction is seemed more like workplace sexual harassment.
ok so some of it was hot but just really didn't work for me on the whole.

would not read again

ONE BLAZING EXPERIENCE!!!
OH MY! Man, talk about blazing, sultry and red-hot. Piper came through with this pulse racing, smooth flowing, sizzling storyline and blazing plot that propels this bad boy to life beautifully. A rollercoaster of unexpected events and surprising mishaps catapults all of your swirling emotions bursting into play smoothly. Trials and tribulations, along with a few bumps, bruises and scrapes draw you in so deep you feel as though you're there with them. The characters are authentic, receptive and so realistic with depth and individuality they blend and flow along fluidly. The scenes are written with such realism it makes a perfect backdrop for this amazing high octane closurer. Amazing job Piper, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

What can I say about Summer and Jack? What a great couple of characters. Jack was a Texan and so demanding and rugged and Summer had a mouth on her and had such sass, they were a match made in heaven. A great read and what an interesting and dramatic story. Summer has a secret and she is running away from her stepfather who wants to control her. Jack also has secrets and so has his father concerning his ranch. A super story full of alpha eroticism, spanking and romance. Plenty of drama and intrigue to go with it. Piper Stone is fast becoming one of my favourite authors and you can be sure her books are exciting and sexy as hell.

Jack Stone is a former marine, he’s the man in charge and he has a whole crew that relies on him to keep them safe.

Summer is the new welder on the crew and she’s trying to prove she’s a tough as any Roughneck on the rig. Unfortunately she’s pissing everyone off in the process and Jack decides to take it upon himself to bring her sassy attitude in line.

He spanks her and takes her rough when she’s bad, and cares for her tenderly when she good. He also tries to unwrap the riddle of who/what she’s running and hiding from as he falls for her.

This was a great story. It had mystery/thriller aspects to the story and a healthy dose of Daddy kink to get the blood pumping.

I listened to this in audio format and narrator Thomas Locklear did a great job bringing the characters to life. Jack’s growl was a delightful treat and the female POV was consistent, strong and well done. With his versatility, this is like a full cast narration coming from one man. I loved it.

Summer is a welder on a rig and when Jack hears her mouth, the dominant in him goes crazy. What Jack doesn't know about Summer is she is on the run from someone in her past and is trying to stay ahead of them. Jack decides that she needs a firm hand and she also needs her butt spanked to keep her in line. I loved this story as it had all the feels for me. Mystery, drama, intrigue, danger and the sex is smoking hot. But can Jack keep her safe from her past? And what happens when she does run? Will he find her? This is one of my favorites that I've read of Ms. Stone's. It kept me turning the pages and I read it in one setting!! Loved it and I would love to see a story for Riley!!!

An absolutely fantastic fast-pace and engaging page turner! The storyline is well-developed, gritty, emotionally deep, well written, and relatable. There are many twists and turns, suspense, danger, spanking, witty banter, humour, and heart-racing adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This book took me on one wild ride and kept me captivated until the end. Amazing and strong characters with off the charts, intense, instant, and potent chemistry. A lot happened in this book and it is definitely worth the read.

A mesmerizing tale about a young woman on an oil rig with a bunch of roughnecks! This particular man is more than a roughneck, he is also a former marine. And there seems to be nothing he likes better than spank her bare bottom. The thing is, she likes it just as much as him! It infuriates her how much she like it. But this is certainly better than being set-up with a stuffy suit and tie by her step-father. Will Jack be able to tame this wild and mouthy little vixen; Summer? Or is she destined to be found by her scheming step-father and made to do something she doesn't want to?

This book was fantastic! The chemistry between Summer and Jack was intense. It was very hot and steamy. Summer Carter is running from her ruthless stepfather, Jonathan Holmes. She gets a job on an oil rig with all men. She feels she has something to prove and she gets into all kinds of trouble on the rig. That is until Jack Stone AKA Master Sergeant gets his hands on her. She needs discipline and he demands it on his rig. The thing is Summer seems to take her punishments in stride because she gets rewarded at the end. Jack is an ex-marine and finds that Summer has alot of skeletons in her closet. Danger is ahead. Secrets come out. Has Summer tried to deceive Jack from the start?

Summer got a job on an oil rig after studying how to's on YouTube and a little hand's on experience. She is on the run from her dishonest, manipulating stepfather and along with the man Jonathan wants her to marry, a crony of his, Christian. She runs up against, Jack, her supervisor on the oil rig, who is upset with her foul mouth and attitude, which he corrects with a spanking. There are spark between the two of them despite his being almost twice her age, but the book leads the reader into wanting to know what comes next with Summer's stepfather, Jack's father's ranch and the men on the rig...I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’m reviewing the audio edition. I have to start off by saying if not for the great performance of Thomas Locklear, Narrator I would have set this story down so fast. He so brought the character to life and I kept hoping the story would get better. For me I feel it really has nothing original. I hated Summer the main character. A little too needy and bratty for her age and supposedly experience. And I’m not too sure about Jack. He is a super strong personality and that worked but the daily behavior got carried a little too far. The sex is hot but I’m not sure it makes up for the rest for me. I received a free copy and this is a honest review.
