Vaughan W. Smith is a fiction writer from Sydney, Australia, who explores big life questions through story. His favourite genres are Fantasy, Mystery, Science Fiction and Thrillers.
Sometime ago I set out on the Hidden Wizard series, 1200 pages later it's done. That’s a lot of words, almost half a Peter F. Hamilton book.
If you like your adventures board shouldered, firm buttocked, slashing and fornicating their way across fairy tale lands in pursuit of wine, women and wonga, hidden palaces with soaring minarets and unpronounceable names, a cast of thousands with intertwined plots that jump and twist with each paragraph then you should move along, this is not the series you are looking for.
This is a by-the-numbers fantasy yarn. The writing borders on ‘not very good’. The story wanders. You wont lose any sleep to cliffhangeritus.
Yet I enjoyed it all. I was always happy to pick up and continue. I didn’t lose track of the plot or characters. It was a bowl of porridge, nutritious and easy on the stomach. These books wont strip, whip and leave you tied to a tree. They will have your slippers and a hot mug of coco waiting next to your comfy chair by the fire.
Over 1,300 pages contained in this 4 book series, The Hidden Wizard by Vaughan W. Smith. He didn't even know he was a wizard. When he finds out he must save the world from the blite, he embarks on a journey to learn how to use his wizard abilities. He must endure three trials to improve his abilities. In his future are many hidden mysteries involving friends and family he will learn.
The entire story is cleverly constructed with interesting and challenging adventures. Not unlike binge watching a long series, the reader will be immersed in a magical world with magical friends and enemies for quite awhile as the mysteries unfold.
This story drew me in and kept me interested in finding out what happened next. Alrion, the son of a Blacksmith is pulled into an adventure that will test every aspect of his being and what he thought about everyone around him. Can't same much without giving away parts of the story. But Alrion turns out to be a wizard as he quickly finds out and so much more along the way. He meets a number of people along the way that are pulled into his adventure as they try to find out how to defeat the all encompassing blight threatening to take over everyone. A very good story that even when you think it is done continues a bit more as the story may yet continue?
I did enjoy the series but found the beginning forced into a fast time line. Maybe a short narrative before the wizard is discovered, tested and sent out on an impossible task would have read a little easier but after you get passed that the story is very engaging and difficult to put down. The only other issue was the mis spelling of the same words through out the story and a few sentence’s that didn’t make sense. So better editing would have made this a more enjoyable read. However I would still recommend reading it
This series so completely kept my interest that, by means of several nights of minimal sleep, I finished it in a week. The characters were so engaging and the story so compelling that I could not wait to find out what happened next. The author did a great job of keeping the future unpredictable yet managed to keep each book a stand-alone story that would not leave a reader lost if they only had one book in the series available to them. That's an accomplishment all in itself.
The end was so disappointing most of the last book was edging towards a massive battle.Alas he decided to put more into the main character, which left it a little flat,in my opinion hence the four stars. As a result I will not be reading his follow up book, also the characters names were strange. But for the most I did enjoy the book as stated before, the final battle should have been more intense. And the transformation from the blight explained in the battle, not as a afterthought
If I was a new reader of fantasy quest I am sure I would have given this series a 5 star rating . The combination of the group's dynamics had some nice twists . The father and mother being supporting participants was wonderful. The drunken monk ,Certan, not only gave us an eay transition in location but also he was used to impart some life lessons ,well played author well played . .all in all a good read .
So many aspects to this story, magic, sword and sorcery, escapades on a massive scale. Once I started reading it was hard to stop, always looking forward to pick up the storyline again. I tend to read before bed, but a mistake in this case, had me awake for hours past time to sleep, but no regrets. Strong characters following a smooth storyline that encourages you to paint a thousand pictures with your imagination
This trilogy is quite long, yet kept me intrigued beginning to end. I was glad to find a new version of the expression of evil, not two but three kinds of magic, and romance without requiring sex. Of course the good guys win in the end, yet there is still a need for watchfulness. There are a few surprises that I absolutely did not see coming. Very enjoyable fantasy.
Enjoyable story and characters! I was hooked until finished!
I really enjoyed Alrion’s adventures and the other characters. Some might have been better realized but that is an opinion based on who I enjoyed reading about.
I had a tough time not trying to finish these 3 books in 3 days! I am sad to see the end of the books and that world for now but did enjoy how it ended! Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
Brilliant set of books, lively characters and endearing story line. There's scope for a set of similar stories, following the tales of other hidden wizards. Great reading and interesting fight scenes. Would recommend this series whole heartedly. Gary Challenger.
I enjoyed the world and characters in this series very much, especially the two types of power or is it three? I had difficulty with phrasing that struck me as awkward maybe from cultural or language differences. I stumbled over quite a few which slowed my enjoyment.
Awesome Read....I liked the story line and the wizard theme. It was a happy ending but a little long. Well written. Once started, I could not put it down for long.
Well done. Looking for the next installment. The Hiden Wizard will be a good sequel to this series. Can't wait
I say it was a fun read because the story is about wizards riding horses and traveling from forest to desert to snow caped mountains but talking to each other in modern day ways. The closeness of family and friends is a really great message and makes the whole story.
Nothing wrong but a lot of unnecessary plot. Could have been done in 2 volumes. Characters spoke way too calm and polite. Not normal speech. I skipped a lot going from first couple of paragraphs in a chapter and then reading the last few to easily get the gist of the story.
The ultimate fight between good and evil. A young man is giving the impossible task of curing the world of evil. He meets friends on the way and learns about his family's history. A great read.
This is a wonderful epic tale. Well written throughout the entire story. One thing I liked is that there were no shortcuts taken with the plot lines and every question was answered.
This was a really good series, easy to get lost in for a few days. The characters were engrossing and there were plenty of twists and turns to the story that totally surprised me and left me guessing right to the end.
As the write-up states a awesome adventures awaits those who take the time to read this tail to the end. Defiantly not what you perceive at first, but the story evolves with time. Reading shows hidden things that become pivot to the end.
An original plot as far as I am concerned. The characters are very well defined some difficult to lose. Thanks to the author for the late nights. Next adventure is when?
I really enjoyed the story but the writing seems stilted and the character development was sort of stunted as all the protagonists seemed similar and the the antagonists the same. Needs more flow in his writing but great imagination.
Good story line. Grammar, wording, diction need a good editor and work. Sometimes difficult writing style. Continuity can be confusing. Ignore that and it’s a fun read.
Mr. Smith did a great job of making this journey worth while. His attention to his characters, ability to weave the story, and continuity between books made this a great read. I quite enjoyed his ending and look forward to what a might be.
A great set of fantasy books that takes you on a journey through a world of magic. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. Loved this series and I look forward to more from this author.
My favorite character? Everyone. I've never read a better coming of age book. It's incomparable. The Hidden Wizard rates as one of my all time favorite book and I've read thousands. Download it, and enjoy
The story was full of twists and turns, many were misleading making for unexpected surprises. Though sometimes the story became muddled and hard to get back on track. All in all I enjoyed reading the entire series.
I found it to be a fascinating story and the volumes were enough to tell the tale completely and yet not drag it out unnecessarily. I couldn't wait for the current book to end so I could reach for the next!
I really enjoyed this series. It was activating and had the right amounts of twists and turns to keep the interest going. I think if there are more journeys for the members in this group, they would be enjoyable reading
