I absolutely love the way the mangaka draws characters and expressions, but really wish they would have been older (but then it wouldn't have worked with the plot... ).
This was a sweet story about two high schoolers, Himari Uehara and Gaku Asada, figuring out their feelings for each other and Himari was a little too oblivious to be believed when it came to anything concerning sex but for the sake of the story I just went with it. They eventually figure out that they're gay and start a sexual relationship. Them figuring out how to actually have sex as well as what exactly they like was part of the whole self-discovery thing.
***** I'm really bored with this type of story, and I need to stop implulse buying BL whenever there's a new release. This isn't a unique story, but what makes it stand out were the gorgeous drawings of the characters as well it having actual sex scenes. Okay, so that isn't really anything unique to BL, but for stories featuring high schoolers, the newer BL has a tendency to not show much... a far cry from older yaoi titles. Of course there are exceptions (like Dekoboko Sugar Days, Yarichin Bitch Club, or Caste Heaven - three of my favorites... just saying 😏) but a lot these newer stories tend to focus more on feelings and friendship, not the act of having sex.
Anyway, lesson learned. My younger self would have really liked this, but my current self found it a bit too simple. 3 stars
Where to Read: FUTEKIYA and the physical is published by SuBLime
*Original Review 5/22/2022* THIS WAS SO GOOD. This book may have solidified Minta Suzumaru as a new fave mangaka.
I stupidly love this trope of the clueless, oblivious character that is blunt and speaks their mind. And the whole "I'll help you out" thing gets me every time. I also love that Minta based Himari on someone they previously dated. That's so funny.
I loved this from the start and I absolutely couldn't put it down. Himari and Gaku were so fucking cute together. Himari was my absolute favorite. I loved how pure and innocent he was, but so bold?? The way he spoke his mind and didn't understand things was very cute to me. I also loved that Gaku and Himari were the top students and when they didn't understand something they researched and studied. So funny. Himari's reasoning for his trauma was kind of silly, but it really fit his character. This was such an entertaining read and I could see myself rereading this many times in the future. Absolutely loved it.
*Reread 6/19/2022* I just needed the comfort read so I picked this up :)
*Reread 3/15/2023* The physical is now in my hands and I immediately reread. So incredibly sweet. I absolutely love it. Gaku definitely takes advantage of Himari's naiveté, but like everything else about this is so cute and wholesome that it's very easily overlooked. He also never does anything that Himari doesn't like or want. I love them so much.
I was a very naive teen, and even I wasn't as credulity-strainingly oblivious as Himari. But that aside, this is very sweet, and is just as much about understanding who you like as it is about sex.
This is a very sweet BL manga about two boys figuring out themselves, their sexuality, and each other. There's a lot of inexperience, and a little angst, but it all works in the context of these characters' youth. The art is definitely a major strength, and I definitely will be reading more of this author's works.
esto pudo ser fácilmente un 5 estrellas porque desde el principio todo era muy lindo PERO aprovecharse de una persona (y más cuando involucra un acto sexual) NUNCA está bien y punto.
The color of youth is gold; Augh, Asada, I started to cry when you said that!! That is my most favorite thing about this manga, I told you, I'm a sucker for symbols and motifs. And the art is 100% swoon worthy too!!
No fue malo, pero no se destacó en absolutamente nada y tampoco me hizo sentir mucho sjsjsj me cansé de leer mangas genéricos que no me provoquen nada denme DRAMA denme FEELS denme cualquier cosa que me haga sentir algo.
I think this manga was my favorite by Mina Suzumaru so far! It had a good balance of sex and communication as well. I loved how the main character was clueless about himself and his best friend is the one who helps him out. I just realized how differently this could have gone if the friend didn't start to like him and it would turn out really bad as well. Finding out about your sexuality in high school is a story that is needed more. This one was fun and now I wanna read all of their works!
How’d you get your sex education during your grade school years?
In my small town middle school days, maybe around thirteen years old, I remember the dreaded and unavoidable SEX ED. We got grade 7 sex ed from our art teacher, who I remember telling us to get all our “teehees” out before we started. Then in grade 8 it was our homeroom teacher, a middle aged woman who went to my family’s church. I have a vague recollection of a black and white diagram of a vagina projected at the front of the class, and the “bad girl” in class getting yelled at for making a snide comment, and me sinking down in my seat wishing I was anywhere else. That’s about it, and this was all baseline heterosexuality.
So needless to say I didn’t pick up much in school.
Then, in those formative years, a kid I was close to showed me Digimon yaoi and I lost my damn mind. High school was a rabbit hole of Wikipedia deep dives and websites I very much should not have been accessing on my family’s desktop, and hunting for other gay boys to dirty talk to on Habbo fucking Hotel. Good God, I hope I made a habit of clearing my search history… I somehow got away with doing a sexuality survey for a high school sociology project; I was a grade 12 Alfred Kinsey, I still have the binder filled with surveys, grades 9-12. Probably not the most academically rigorous (or ethical), but I got a good grade on it. All that to say, my sex education came very haphazard, self directed and maybe not the emotionally healthiest it could have been. Which explains a lot.
Anyways, how about that boys’ love manga…
Golden Sparkle introduces one of the more unique protagonists in the annals of BL in one Uehara Himari. Himari never really got girls. When dropping him off for kindergarten, his long absent father explained it was up to Himari to protect the girls in his class, before he witnessed a little girl bully his classmate, which shocked him to his core. As he grew up, he died his hair blond and tried acting like a delinquent so people would leave him alone, mostly so he wouldn’t be drawn into the grade school intrigues of guy talk (JUGS) and romantic advances from girls. He skipped his junior high health class because it wasn’t graded, and at home he only has his older sister and mother, so by the time he reaches high school, and puberty, he’s completely ignorant to all matters of sexual health. At the start of the manga, we find Himari cleaning his boxer briefs, concerned about his nightly… emissions.
Enter tall, broad-shouldered, easy going and babely Asada Gaku. The two quickly bond, and after learning about Himari’s… predicament, Gaku gives his new friend some… PRACTICAL sexual health education.
I love love LOVED This book holy cow. I’m usually not into books involving limited world building and characters development but I actually really like how simple and forward this book was with the message and characters. The artwork is beautiful, probably my most favourite manga art style by far. If you’re looking for something spicy, funny, realistic this is definitely it.
Summary: Himari Uehara, for a first-year high school boy, knows very little about sex. Without his father at home and having skipped health in middle school, Himari is only confused when he wakes up with his boxers a mess and has no one for advice. Luckily, Himari has Gaku Asada, a new friend from high school who offers to teach him everything and more he missed out in health class.
I saw someone say that Himari could have been also aro ace. Which would have been a lovely thing to see and explore. Personally, I would have been fine if there was no sex in this. However, I loved how awkward and honest the conversations surrounding sex were between the two boys. I loved the transparency and how they researched anything they did not understand or know that much about. It melted my heart. Not to mention how supportive their friends were of their relationship. Honestly, I could watch these two fall in love with each other 10x over. So precious. Heart has melted.

The problem with a story like this, even though I enjoy reading them generally, is the question of consensuality. That is also the problem here at the beginning because Gaku immediately lends a hand where, in my opinion, more explanation on Gaku's part would have been necessary. Hidari is in fact completely clueless and it's hard to consent to something you don't know or understand. In a way, I still liked the story. It was nice to see how their experimenting slowly developed into deeper feelings.
Golden Sparkle is an innovative manga in my opinion, in the vein of Sex Education and Jack of Hearts by L. C. Rosen, as it shows two fifteen-year-olds exploring their sexualities and discovering about sex in the first place; and in Himari’s (the blond one on the cover) case, finding out about what secondary sexual characteristics and nocturnal emissions are as well. The boys, through their blossoming relationship, discover more about themselves, their feelings and their own developing bodies.
(I described Himari as greysexual because I believe he fits the general description of greysexuality quite well, as he does not appear interested in sex per se and he is instead more focused on his feelings for Gaku and their connection. He explores sex more in relation to his relationship to Gaku than out of his own interest. I am very open to hear about this from greysexual readers)
Be warned though that it is explicit and it features minors as protagonists.
