A point of view, a state of mind - PERSPECTIVE is everything.
A book of shared insights from one of Australia's most exceptional athletes. Ellyse Perry is among the all-time cricket greats, and the only player, female or male, to represent Australia in both cricket and football World Cups, making her international debut in both sports at the age of 16.
PERSPECTIVE is about sitting back from the world you're involved in and evaluating what it means to you. What are the important things that you know make experiences special? What are the things that motivate you? What are the things that give you joy? The things that challenge you but, ultimately, make you a better person? Most importantly, who are the people whose unwavering help and support you couldn't go without?
From the lessons of a high-performance athlete's career to appreciating the small things in life, this inspiring illustrated book features stories and reflections from Ellyse's childhood and career on the themes of dreaming, belief, work, resilience, appreciation, opportunity, balance and perseverance - and their importance in everything we do.
This empowering book is a unique view from one of Australia's most admired sports stars about what it is to be an elite athlete.
This book is broken up by values and is an interesting read, although I would have preferred more narrative. It would be an excellent book for young people trying to work out their life philosophy, regardless of their interest in sport.
such a good book!!! loved reading about ellyse perry's thoughts and the way she goes about life and cricket. Such an amazing cricketer to watch, but even more so knowing the little details that have made up her life. The fact that she's really shy and works super hard and loves training sessions more than the games. And also is super modest. Such a blessing in cricket and so glad she plays for Victoria.
Perspective is an excellent title for this read. Ellyse provides a different perspective on sport, training, family and life as compared to other books by athletes.
A very enjoyable read as Ellyse presents her views on things such as work, resilience, perseverance, opportunity, determination, support, motivation and leadership.
Quick, easy read. I feel like this book would’ve been mind blowing and near-seminal for me in my teens, as a hungry young cricket fan wanting any knowledge from elite performers. Of course, that’s years ago now… but how life has changed that now a women’s cricketer can put out a book like this. It’s a laidback, authentic type book of themed lessons and stories. Not groundbreaking for adults, and I would’ve liked a little more insight to certain points in her career, but I do feel this book will be awesome for young girls and teenagers coming up in sport.
As a lover of sport (both participating and watching), I enjoyed this insight into Ellyse Perry views on different perspectives (hence the title!) such as resilience, perseverance, opportunity, etc. She has a humble attitude which I really admired.
This book is less one continuous story and more fragments around general "themes". Still, I enjoyed it and Perry's insights into elite sport are fascinating. This is an inspiring and encouraging book for young women, regardless of their interest in cricket.
Fairly engaging, but it seemed like a lot of the photos and particularly the full page quotes were used just to fill the book out. Terrible proofreading with lots of spelling mistakes.
This young lady has impressed me ever since she was first selected for the Aussie cricket team as a teenager. She juggled playing for Australia in both soccer and cricket until in her early 20's until she really needed to make a choice between the two if she was going to become a professional committed player of one. She chose cricket.
This is an easy book to read, designed I sense for a younger audience to help inspire and motivate by sharing how Perry went from a kid having balls thrown at her by her dad at the local cricket ground to being the premier all rounder in women's world cricket. It's a delight to read, this humble champion who repeatedly honours those people who have helped her along the way. Her dad's influence is all pervading and it's clear they have a very special bond which is wonderful to read.
Each chapter is very short with one word titles, none of which are that inventive. They simply state the facts: Perseverance, Support, Resilience, Connections, Passion, etc. There are many photographs and one page memes using quotes from the relevant chapter.
It's inspiring, informative and motivational. Perry is a humble soul who recognises she is very blessed to be able to be doing what she loves doing: training and playing. She writes a lot about training which is an important for young people in particular to understand. This is where you build the resilience and confidence as a result of developing the muscle memory for the technique that is called upon in a game situation. Clearly, Perry will retire when she no longer finds training enjoyable and/or her body doesn't;'t allow her to train as well as she feels she needs to.
Perry is the local girl who hasn't allowed success to go to her head. She's passionate about furthering the game as clearly evidenced by the critical role she played in getting the 2020 World Cup to be a standalone women's event with the final to be played in front of 100,000 at the haloed Melbourne Cricket Ground.
I suspect Ellyse Perry will become a fabulous coach when she retires playing most likely with kids so she can instil in them what was instilled in her by her dad, brother and coaches when she was a kid.
If you have a talented kid in your household you might like to get them a copy of 'Perspective', it may serve to encourage them to take their talents even further.
Perspective is an insight into the mind and life of Australian cricketer Ellyse Perry. It is a series of 25 reflections on traits and qualities that Perry finds key in her personal and professional life, enabling her to represent her country in two sports at a national level.
The book is written in small, easy to consume ramblings of experiences and ideas by Perry. The book follows through, bringing in aspects of childhood, young professionalism and established careers in the Australian cricket team. The style and message is excellent for young readers, whether they be aspiring athletes or not.
While the book was very straight forward, it does feel as though it is written to a younger audience. There are pages of just quotes or images which break up the chapters. There is not much flow of the topics into one another, but they feel like individual essays, that take from the same experiences in Perry's life.
Overall, I would rate this 3.5/5 stars. It was very easy to read, and would appeal to a young audience. Each chapter feels as though it can be read in isolated sittings. It is also very motivating, and the messages behind the book would be applicable within and outside the professional athletic sphere.
This is perhaps the most obscure book I’ve ever picked up. As a huge fan of Ellyse Perry, I was curious about her mindset - especially as someone who’s been part of multiple World Cup–winning Australian teams and has represented Australia in football (YES!!).
This isn’t an in-depth autobiography; it’s more like a collection of notes and reflections from an elite athlete. What I loved most about the book - and about Ellyse - is how she emphasises, again and again, that athletes aren’t special, and how she hates being treated differently.
I could relate deeply to the joy she finds in the process - the training, which she says makes up 90% of an athlete’s journey. You start to realise that elite athletes are often self-driven, content to spend hours training and reflecting on their game without ever getting bored.
I’ll admit I was initially afraid it might go into self-help territory (which I’m not currently interested in), but Ellyse actually offers some unpopular insights about both the game and life itself.
P.S. The Kindle version sucks if you’re reading on a Kindle device — I had to switch to the Kindle app because it was barely legible.
Ellyse Perry comes across as a "good" role model for young female athletes. Talented, humble and away from controversy. Her book isn't so much a biography as her perspective on her career and life so far. Ellyse is still young and yet to retire from competitive sport. It was great she shared the joy sport can provide people, irrespective of their athletic abilities and what other benefits can be gained from sport. She alluded to the nature of an athletes life often requiring many selfish decisions but the benefit of team sport in this department. She acknowledges her family esp to her achievements and that not being defined by your sport helps keep life in some perspective. A quick and easy read but the flow is a bit mix and mash.
Such a kind and tender book. It's a humane book. So inspiring. It's a reminder about the simple small things that are so grounded and out there, but we constantly keep forgetting about them. It's a book about determination, passion, perseverance but at the same time, rejoicing and celebrating moments when you're just taking time off. It's about training with all your heart. It's about the invisible training that no one sees, but you keep doing it. To enjoy it. It's about how beautiful friendship and companionship is and those are moments that matter the most.
Reasonable insight into somebody who is one of Australia's best sportspeople, ever! Part biography, part self help book, and part generic coaching manual this needs to be read by every aspiring sports person between the ages of 10 and 15, but particularly by girls. Highly recommended for that age group and certainly interesting for all of those interested in women's cricket.
I devoured this book within a day. Perry’s insights and ‘perspectives’ in to life, sport and work are open and honest. They offer a way in to the mind of Australia’s greatest cricketer and help us to see how she got to the top of her game.
So inspiring one of the few non fictions that I actually can enjoy and connect with. As a keen player of tennis and netball I can certainly relate with the words written. Ellyse’s writing is so interesting and motivating. Def recommend to sports players and anyone interested in Perseverance
A book that tells you about the values and ideas that Ellyse Perry believes in. Wrote in a easy language, this book works as a motivation, a guide to figure out your life and ideas, sometimes. In case you are a fan of Ellyse you should try it.
I really admire Ellyse Perry. Her book is written clearly, and she has really thought about what makes her tick as an athlete. She doesn’t give much away in this book though.
Somewhat cheesy but I'm sure I would have loved it as a teenager. Now I much prefer biographies to have a bit more grit and drama. Annoying that none of the photos had captions.
An enjoyable look into Ellyse Perry’s world. Not a traditional biography, but Perry comes through with an authentic voice and insights into the cricket world.
