Jadwiga Dąbrowska, dream-eater, wakes from her own murder in a bizarre mirror world, chained body and soul to a terrible being, the Shadow’s Face. With no choice but to obey the Shadow, she must contend with forces outside her understanding, fighting in a war that will never end.
She can’t be sure that her freedom was a fair price for her life.
Kim Reed has spent years searching for a lost friend, but her search is interrupted by war. An ancient wizards’ Circle is reaching for power, backed by black magic. With her own magic atrophied and her past making her an object of suspicion, she is not ready for politics, war, or spies manipulating her dreams.
All she wants is her friend back, but there are Shadows standing in her way.
USA Today bestselling author M.R. Graham is a native Texan who traces strong cultural roots back to Scotland, Poland, and England. A mild-mannered PhD student during the day, Graham transforms at night into a raging Holmesian loremaster and rabid novelist. Though passionate about all scholarship and academia, Graham's training and true love lies with anthropology, particularly the archaeological branch. Also, steampunk and vampires.
I was very happy to have this one to read right after I finished the Medium, the first book in this series. M.R. excellently continues the web she wove in the first book. She continues with a really good story, one I haven't come across yet and this time covers more of the wizards aspect of the series. She also introduces a Mora, a paranormal entity I have never heard about and made a great addition to the story.
Kim really comes into her own in this book and shows to be the heroine she really is. She is strong, yet trusting, determined and caring, a very complex individual that thankfully all makes sense. She seems the driving force and even though this book is about the Mora, it does cover more about Kim than the Medium did. I was also happy to read more about Lenny in this book, with just some glimmers of hope for him.
The Mora, oh boy, where to start. Just like Lenny, this is someone, you can't help but ache for. She seems to really have gotten the short end of the stick and really suffers with seemingly no way out. The ending leaves you where you were left with Lenny in the first book.
Daniel also gets a lot of time in this book and I wonder what he is about. So far the author has not released a lot of his mysteries and I am curious to see where she will take this one. I will definitely keep an eye out for future books since I really enjoyed the series so far.
I have received this book from the author for an honest review.
My favourite vampire, Daniel, has returned, along with my favourite wizard, Kim Reed. MR Graham is a true story teller - her characters are deep and dark, sometimes with a hint of tragic and her plots are darker and laced with the macabre. But there is a human-ness to these paranormal souls - one can't help but feel for some of them and absolutely abhor others. I was sucked into the story (once again) following Kim on her quest to find Lennie, while dealing with the issues of her overbearing family and Daniel, who is looking for asylum and hoping that Kim will help him. We're introduced to Jadwiga, the Mora, who is in the center of the story, a puppet in a war for power and powerless to do anything but obey the voice in her head. This is one series that I hope will not end, at least any time soon.
The Medium #1 - My first read by Ms. Graham, and I liked and hated it. I'm bored by most vampire stories but this finely crafted story kept my interest, although I had to take two weeks to read it. It's wordy with repetition and I needed breathers from the intensity and darkness. Ms. Graham took several themes and combined them into a substantial read using vampires, ghosts, mediums and a few other paranormals. Add heavy doses of insanity, cruelty (nothing graphic), loyalty and other thought/behavior patterns, coupled with a large range of emotions. The characters develop throughout the story adding to the tapestry of the storylines. Ms. Graham took several common, overused themes and made them fresh and original. Imagine a vampire/medium as a kidnap victim. The reader actually feels sorry for him as well as frustrated by his thoughts and actions. The vivid descriptions place the reader in the story without any graphic, gory details. There's room for how gory the reader wants the violence. The dialog is well written and it's wonderful to find a book that's properly edited. Clean with no vulgar language. 4*
The Mora #2 - This book starts six years after The Medium ends and was much easier to read. This book, like the first, has great storylines and characters that make reading the series interesting and substantial. Some of the characters that were dropped along the lines in Medium are back continuing beside new characters. More of the paranormals are added to the mix and there's travel outside of TX and MA. This book does better with the wordiness that I found with Medium. There's still the psychology and originality with the storylines and characters. Clear, vivid descriptions, good dialog and clean with no vulgar language. I contacted the author to review her books after reading The Medium. 4*
The Mage #3 - This book starts with Kim's past in 1985. Without giving away spoilers since this is a review and not a book report, The Mage continues with the interesting storylines, the strongly defined characters and the intrigue and psychology. Well written and well edited; clean with no vulgar language; vivid descriptions kept the reader immersed in the pages. While The Medium took me a long time to read, The Mage flowed quickly but I'm also heavily invested in the series by now. I contacted the author to review her books and received this book through Booksprout. 4*

While very creepy and dark, along with somewhat depressing, this book is a great follow up (2nd in series) to the first book if you like that kind of thing. This intense story is another page-turner.
