Such a weird book. I read it last week at the Kitakyushu Manga Museum. The story is basically about this superhero who is flying around the world, looking for people who are starving, and then feeding them his own head--which is made out of bread filled with sweet bean paste. He first gives half his head to a guy starving in the desert, then leaves him there! Then he feeds the other half of his head to a boy lost in the forest. He actually rescues the kid, though.

Then in the end he gets a new head from a scientist who shares Anpanman's face.

Apparently Anpanman is historically the most lucrative fictional character in Japan's history and has made over 52 billion dollars. And apparently he was created by a Christian who wanted to show some Christian values through the character. I don't know, I just thought the story was a little creepy, but it's interesting to consider the character from a deeper viewpoint!

The original Anpanman story. Really gets to the heart of the caring and sacrifice that go into heroism.

Yanase is not afraid to show kids a headless Anpanman.
