Kaylin McFarren has received more than 70 national literary awards, in addition to a prestigious RWA Golden Heart Award nomination for FLAHERTY'S CROSSING - a book she and her oldest daughter, New York Times/USA Today best-selling author Kristina McMorris, co-wrote in 2008. Prior to embarking on her writing journey and developing the popular THREADS psychological thriller series, she poured her passion for creativity into her work as the director of a fine art gallery in the Pearl District in Portland, Oregon; she also served as a governor-appointed member of the Oregon Arts Commission.

When she’s not traveling or spoiling her two pups and three grandsons, she enjoys giving back to her community through participation and support of various charitable, medical and educational organizations in the Pacific Northwest. Her award-winning time-travel adventure, HIGH FLYING, asks challenging questions that will linger long after the final twists are revealed. Jumping to the supernatural-horror genre, Kaylin's clever GEHENNA series takes readers into the pit of Hell, through the mechanisms of secret societies, and across the Earth’s crust, ever raising the stakes for this soulmate duo—a roguish, Nephilim creature and beautiful guardian angel presented with mind-boggling challenges.

With each story she writes, this author delivers unexpected twists and turns and keeps her readers on the edge of their seats, leaving them guessing and thoroughly entertained.

FUN TIDBITS

Kaylin is proud of the fact that her great aunt Bessie B. Cordell, an evangelistic missionary during WWII, was instrumental in opening an orphanage in Tientsin, China and also wrote two published novels, Precious Pearl and Blossoms of the Flowery Kingdom, documenting her dangerous, harrowing experiences.

She keeps a glass of wine close by while writing love scenes, Kleenex on her desk while writing heart breakers, and has been known to empty a box of chocolates when she's completely stumped.

A consummate "pantser" and perfectionist, she writes and edits as she goes, and uses photographs of models and actors from tabloid magazines to visualize her characters.

She loves her husband of 48 years dearly, however, if Josh Holloway, Hugh Jackman or Ian Somerhalder came knockin', well... their marriage just might be put to the test.

High Flying is a completely unique, refreshing read. I’ve read nothing like it.

Skylar Haines has a tragic past. She takes risks all the time and her newest method? Becoming a stunt pilot.

She is in the sky during an air show when a storm comes causing her to have a near-collision with another aircraft. She’s headed down fast, but with some help, she is able to land safely…but she’s in a different time when she does.

What time? Just before she was born and close to when her father was murdered.

Skylar realizes she can change her family’s destiny, for good or bad. She has to handle it just right.

High Flying is filled with drama and adventure. There’s plenty of action and great tension with this mystery. Skylar was a main character to champion, and I was rooting for her throughout.

High Flying crosses genres in a unique way. It’s science fiction, thriller, and action/adventure. It reads quickly and is tons of fun. Highly recommended for adventurous readers who love an original read!

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

If you could go back in time and change a piece of your history, would you? Kaylin McFarren has seamlessly cooked up this genre potpourri. A dash of science fiction, a dollop of action adventure, a sprinkling of drama, all mixed together into a compelling story. Skylar’s father was murdered before she was born, this left her grouchy grandfather to raise her. Schuyler did not have the easiest of childhoods and always carried around the sadness of her father‘s murder. As an adult she is a complete adrenaline junkie and her latest obsession is stunt flying. One day while flying she encounters a storm that slips her back into time eight months before her birth prior to her father’s murder. Now it is up to Skyler to change the course of history or not. Will this improve her life or destroy it?

Skyler was an interesting and intense character. I really was keeping my fingers crossed that she would do the right thing throughout this book. The concept is extremely thought-provoking, and you did have to suspend believe a little (unless you believe in time travel that is). Made you think that every action you take, every decision you make, ultimately impacts not only your life but the lives of so many others. So what if Skyler does stop her father’s murder? Would that make her life better? What parts of her life would she have not lived, what people would she have not met if history were altered? I got a little philosophical with this book, made me think about my own life a bit. This was an incredibly compelling story with a intriguing premise. Whether or not you believe in time travel this is one to add to the TBR!

*** Big thanks to the author for my copy of this book ***

Part science fiction, part thriller plus adventure High Flying by Kaylin McFarren is a fast-paced quick read, action packed and involving time travel, illegal drug smuggling, drug cartels while also dealing with some sensitive issues like mental illness, substance abuse and self harm.

Like I mentioned, it is a fairly short read, but does not feel rushed. The story is brisk yet well executed. A nice touch was a plot-relevant quote at the beginning of every chapter. I was initially a little skeptic of the time travel aspect, but it was also not overdone and I really liked how the author wrapped things up.

However, I got a bit confused with the number of characters that were introduced midway, and the series of events around the mid mark also seemed a bit haphazard, though I believe it all got sorted out towards the end. I also sort of guessed the major twist but that could be more because I've been reading plenty of thrillers lately, and not because the twist was obvious, it was actually a good one.

Overall, I'd say it's a decent read, so pick it up if you're looking for a quick action filled adventure story with a time travel angle.

Thank you, GetRedPR and SuzyApprovedBookTours for a copy of this exciting read and this blog tour opportunity, in exchange for my honest review. This title released May 18, 2019.

What could be better than a psychological thriller about time travel, drug smuggling and cartels!?

This was a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride, with a side of science fiction (time travel). Normally I shy away from science fiction but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It was a fairly quick read with well executed plot twists and turns, and I enjoyed the quotes that started off each chapter – they were all relevant to the plot, which I thought was an interesting touch.

You will be kept at the edge of your set from the very first page. There is definitely more to the story than the action-packed items described above. The author also addresses some more sensitive issues such as mental illness (and specifically self-harm and suicide) – Deep right?! I can assure you that these were all well-executed.

I enjoyed watching Skyler’s character evolve throughout the story as she started unraveling the secrets behind her family and their ways. It was inspiring watching her try to rectify their wrong doings and create a fresh start for them – albeit and unsuccessful feat. The story alternated between the past and present seamlessly, despite the many characters and storylines going on at the forefront.

This was a fun read for me and definitely got me out of my reading comfort zone and I highly recommend this book if you are looking for fast-paced action but willing to step outside of your usual genre.

“High Flying” is the latest riveting psychological thriller by Kaylin McFarren.

Skylar Haines has led a difficult life. In addition to the pain of having lost both parents, she has also suffered the loss of close friends. Her father died before she was born, and she lost her mother after sharing a difficult relationship. Raised by a cold-hearted grandfather, Skylar learns to cut herself for emotional release. As an adult, she finally begins living her life according to her own terms. Trading cutting for an endorphin-releasing career as a stunt pilot, Skylar is finally living her dream. She is also attracted to another stunt pilot named Jake, who encourages her to push beyond what she perceives to be her limits.

This all changes one day during a stunt show, when Skylar experiences a strange storm while flying during a particularly dangerous stunt. Coming out of it, she discovers that she has been thrown back in time to eight months before her birth. Though desperate to try to change history, she quickly gains a greater understanding of why things ended up as they did. Readers follow along as Skylar works against time to change the future.

“High Flying,” is a fast-paced, suspenseful, psychological thriller. Readers will find themselves with their hearts pounding while they read this! In addition to addressing some sensitive topics such as self-mutilation, and suicide, the author also touches upon a serious subject that is near and dear to my heart. This involves the drug cartel and drug trafficking.

Living in the Imperial Valley, which was briefly mentioned in this book, I frequently see the results of the trauma caused by this issue. It is also interesting to note that the members of the drug cartel have homes on this side of the border so that they can keep their children safer. They take care of themselves while destroying the lives of others. This is well demonstrated in “High Flying.”

It was also fascinating to watch the protagonist’s character evolve as she gains insight into why her family was the way that they were. The knowledge made her stronger as she fought to try to create a new future for them. I appreciate that in spite of the new knowledge, the characters were still flawed. This made everything more believable. The time travel aspect added a greater dimension to this story. It was handled well in a way that made it seem plausible. The author also did a great job of smoothly going between the past and the present, so that readers will not be confused by where they are at in the story.

It was a pleasure to read another great novel by Kaylin McFarren. Her current fans and readers who enjoy suspenseful thrillers will enjoy “High Flying.”

“High Flying” by Kaylin McFarren is an action-packed, psychological/paranormal thriller that captures readers attention from the first page.

Skylar Haines life is less than desirable due to the loss of her mother and father. Given that she is unable to cope with past trauma and has low self-esteem she finds that participating in self-harm, specifically cutting, helps to relieve the emotional stress.

McFarren does an excellent job of stating at the beginning of the story that “People cause harm to themselves for various reasons. For the most part, it's to attempt to re-connect with their emotions. They want to feel something other than utter emptiness.” And for this reason, I would caution readers about the descriptive cutting behavior.

Skylar lives with her grandfather, Jessop Haines who is controlling, arrogant and often abusive. At the same time, it is her grandfather who took her in after her mother died, so she didn’t end up in foster care. Regardless of the verbal, emotional and sometimes physical abuse, she remains in his house.

At her wit's end, Skylar runs away and ends up in Nevada as a pilot doing stunt shows with her partner, Jake Brennen. During a high-risk maneuver, Skylar’s plane goes spiraling toward earth during a sudden storm. When she lands, it’s as if she entered a time warp finding herself in 1998 helped by Dylan Haines, her 25-year-old father. It is at this point in the story my thoughts are how great would it be to go back in time to meet your father before he knew you were his daughter? The author does a superb job of introducing each character at the right time and showing how each fit into the plot. Numerous individuals from Skylar’s past play an important role in her personal growth some of which readers will either love or hate.

While Skylar is figuring out how she traveled back in time and what it means, the author presents several characters, some of them very shady and full of revenge and they keep you on the edge of your seat. It is hard to figure out how this story is going to end until the actual end. Clues are given, but the plot keeps twisting and turning so the reader will have to wait until the last chapter to know for sure who the bad guy actually is.

“High Flying” is one of the most unique suspense thrillers I have read in a while. I highly recommended reading Kaylin McFarren's story for intrigue, deception, kidnapping, and an excellent perspective of self-harm. The author provides readers with two stories in one while at the same time providing excellent research and information on self-harm.

Stunt Pilot Skylar Haines is an adrenaline junkie who lives on the edge. During an airshow, she nearly collides with another aircraft in a mysterious storm, only to land safely – in 1997. September 20, 2017 to be exact — eight months before her own birth, and just six days before her father died.

With just $48 in her pocket, a bump on her head and a suspicion that she might actually be dead, she manages to make it to her family house where her biological father – Dylan Haines – is indeed alive.

Is this a second chance to get to spend time with the Dad she never knew? Or is it more than that? Can she somehow prevent his death? Maybe so, but after witnessing Dylan, Lily and her grandfather have an explosive blowout, her first task is getting her future parents back together. Along the way, she’ll become an amateur sleuth and fixer who has to navigate a world full of villains like “The Chaplain,” the murderous leader of a vast drug cartel.

This is a gripping psychological thriller about redemption wrapped in a rollicking time-travel plot, High Flying is a rare work of fiction that makes you feel better about humanity and the future.

I love how many good quality thrillers are becoming available with a strong female lead. Gone are the days when the female roles were limited to beautiful women in need of a male saviour. Kaylin McFarren turns that notion firmly on its head with Skylar, the lead character, as a strong minded, thrill-seeking stunt pilot who is desperate need of sorting her life out. The journey she goes on to get there is a terrific, exciting roller coaster through drug cartels and high-speed adventure.
The inclusion of self-harm in the book I probably found the only troubling aspect. While the author dealt with that and other mental health issues sensitively, I am not sure that the including it so graphically is the best, possibly being a ‘trigger’ for someone who has, or is, struggling with cutting, but I appreciate that I may be being oversensitive on that point.
I am not always a fan of time travel in novels as it often seems to push the story into the realm of ridiculousness but again, McFarren manages to avoid that, masterfully allowing the reader to accept it as a matter of fact. It also allows the reader to travel with Skylar as she comes face to face with her dead parents and can finally make sense of who she is as she sees the world and her own history through new eyes.

Linda's Book Obsession Reviews "High Flying" by Kaylin McFarren, Creative Edge Publishing LLC, May 18, 2019.  .

Kaylin McFarren, Author of "High Flying" has written an exciting, intense, intriguing and entertaining novel. The Genres for this story are Fiction, Science Fiction, and Suspense. There also is time- travel. The author describes her characters as troubled, dysfunctional, complicated, and complex. Some of the characters have low self-esteem and low feelings of self-worth.

Sklar Haines is very anxious and finds herself most comfortable when she is flying a plane. While performing in a stunt show, Skylar encounters unusually bad weather and finds herself in a different time, before she was born. Is it possible to right some of the wrongs in her life? Can Skylar make changes and come back to her home time? There are dark deep secrets, betrayals that Skylar sees in her family and neighbors. "High Flying" reminds me of the movie "Back to the Future". I recommend this intense and suspenseful book.

Time travel is an overused theme in movies and novels. Most writers regurgitate what they’ve seen or read. Not Kaylin McFarren, she expertly combines adventure and mystery with the sub-genre. Her book elicits strong emotions and makes us wonder what could have been. Her characters are a little overexaggerated, but readers will make a connection with the protagonist. Anyone who wishes they could turn back time and undo a tragedy will love the conundrums the heroine faces. Readers will find themselves rooting for the heroine and hoping she finds peace, without making her life worse.

Time traveling into the past to embrace the future, only heard that one about 1,000 times.

Despite that starting sentence, this book was not what I expected. And I say that while also full well acknowledging that the blurb is 100% spot on. Quite the paradox isn't it?

All started good and well with an excellent hook that also got a genuine laugh from me: “In the beginning God created man, but things didn't get interesting until man created the airplane and a strong-minded woman to fly it.”

Then things stayed on on track with an author's note that sets the tone of a book that was written while self-conscious that it's going to deal with subjects such as self-harm as well as that 'strict' things like police procedure are intentionally bent for the sake of the story and warns accordingly. I appreciate that, it shows that choices going forward are deliberate as well as with an awareness not everybody will be okay with certain themes.

Then I have to give the highest praise to the Guardians of Time, a rhyming poem. Not going to lie, I didn't think it could be done well but that poem is a piece that is absolutely fabulous, it paints a clear picture, answers questions, gives backstory without giving everything away. Just wow... For a sci-fi book. And here (in case it wasn't obvious) is where things start to veer into that 'unexpected' I was talking about.

This book is a story that has already been done a thousand times so without giving any specific spoilers I'd just say that the best example of the type I'm talking about is the Back to the Future movies. And though I say that, I also have to say that what I admire most about this read is that though it's general concept is as old as time, somehow it still managed to keep it fresh. Heck, right after reading I dare say I felt something that could be expressed like 'wow, that was a really interesting story' which yeah, doesn't sound groundbreaking but when that thought is soon followed with a 'wait, I can name five other stories about going back in the past' and then 'but I still really thought this one was interesting', well I hope you can start to understand my rating better.

Another thing I have to highlight is that the angle of the cartel, drugs and the significance the 'high flying' has to it all is absolutely superb. No, it's not the world's most original, especially when the 'who is it?' that takes up most of the story is a question whose answer I strongly suspected from the start and was certain was right about halfway through the story (if not sooner). However I thought the melding of “cartel wars” with “time travel, family drama” was an excellent choice and it kept things, like I said, interesting. I also really liked the many twists and turns *surrounding* finding out who The Chaplain was. Oh, and the Jake bit was cute.

That said, it's not like this story is without faults. One of my largest ones it is that in the beginning Dylan seems to welcome Skylar with open arms (sure she saves him but that hardly justifies how he seems to openly spill his life to her afterwards) and then he does a complete 180 and doubts her judgement, actions and words, again with what to me seemed like trivial reasons...No, let me rephrase, he *shouldn't* trust the stranger that drops out of the sky but if he decides he's going to THEN COMMIT!... Okay, frustration vented.

Yes, I have a few other gripes with this tale (like *really?* Roxie was **that** influential for it all to end with what felt basically like a dismissal of what happened to her?) but all in all only the Dylan one I think is one I can “blame” on the writing while the rest I think fall more under a matter of my personal taste.

So overall I liked this book and though I don't think this'll be going into my reread pile (which means that I'd normally give it 3 stars for being an okay 'I read it, it was average') I decided to give it an extra star for all the really thought provoking bits it has throughout. I think an extra star *should* be given when the book has just that little something extra, like for example it doesn't just stick with the obvious “temporal morals” but it also makes you question things like “what makes you who you are?”, “how do you use what you know?” and it also has extremely deep quotes at the start of most chapters (to be clear *all* chapters start with a quote, I just think some are better in that other regard than others).

To end this I'll say that I'd recommend this to people who like mysteries of the whodoneit variety, maybe those who like thrillers/mexican cartel gangster like stories and also if you liked Back to the Future (and other stories like that) then this is probably up your alley.

Skylar Haines is a character that every reader would hate to not love. The girl may have struggled with personal issues for a better part of her life, but the character she displayed was both rousing and engrossing. I was obsessed with Skylar and Jessop Haines’ relationship. They had an eccentric grandfather and granddaughter relationship, making them the most fascinating pair in the book. Skylar always wanted to experiment and try new things. I enjoyed her high adrenaline levels as they made her adventurous and distinct. Her story got to be more exciting when she got the urge to start flying. Skylar as a hardened stunt pilot is one of the things that made me love her more. Her life in the sky created an illusion in my mind where I imagined myself as her co-pilot.
The story shifted from being thrilling to a little bit scary when Skylar came across a peculiar storm that left her confused and dazed. The reader is left shaken, frightened but still has the urge to read on. I could imagine how disastrous things could have been had I been in Skylar’s space. In an attempt to save the day, Skylar almost hit an aircraft head-on. This is where my heart stopped. I love how the author makes one too invested in the main character's life, that when scenarios like the storm happen, one feels like they are part of the storyline. I held my breath as I read on, hoping that Skylar would survive this bizarre storm. Skylar somehow managed to land safely and was taken to another time. I was not prepared for the turn of events as Kaylin McFarren introduced us to another feature in the story, time travel.
‘High Flying’ is a stimulating, sensational and brilliant fantasy book that will have you fall in love with the characters and the writing style the author applied. You will go for adventures, time travel, view life from a different spectrum and enjoy the events in the plot. I loved the transition of Skylar throughout the book. I at first viewed her as a gloomy, depressed and miserable character because of the criticism of her grandfather. I for many reasons wished her father was in the picture. Skylar, however, developed to this amazing and skilled character that everyone loved. Her relationship with her friends was fun too, as she tried to live out loud. I appreciate the author’s efforts to make Skylar the one character that every reader loved.
The action, adventure, humor, writing tone, creativity, suspense, and plot twists are some the things that make ‘High Flying’ an electrifying book. I recommend the book to readers who enjoy psychological fiction as this book will have you hooked from the start to the end. The most exciting part is perhaps when Skylar went back in time. Time traveling made Skylar wonder if by changing her past, she could change her future. The chapters are excellently arranged and Kaylin McFarren’s diction above standard.

Written by author Kaylin McFarren, High Flying is the exciting psychological thriller and adventure story of Skylar Haines. Skylar has been plagued by her past all her life. What with the murder of her father before she was born and being raised by her strict grandfather, it is no wonder that she struggles to find herself. This all changes when she discovers the life of a stunt pilot. During one of her shows, she hits a storm and is sent back in time to eight months before her own birth. Like anyone would, Skylar takes this opportunity to try to change her own family history for the better. The book is exciting and fast-paced as we follow Skylar on this whirlwind adventure. It is a great mix of dangerous and thrilling plot with lots of intriguing mental and emotional exploration.
Skylar is a strong character for many reasons. On the one hand, she fits into the classic strong female lead by being determined, adventurous, a thrill seeker, unafraid of a challenge, and willing to fight those in her way. But what makes her more of a complex character while still showing her strength is watching her mental journey through this book. Skylar has been through a lot of trauma but does not let it hold her back. McFarren speaks openly throughout the book of subjects like dealing with loss, self-harm, depression, and anxiety. This is a strength to the book as a whole, and seeing how Skylar deals with them adds to her own strength and character growth. I will say that if intense topics like this are something that is hard for you to read, this is not the book for you. There is a lot of discussion of it, and the book starts with an emotional and intense scene of self-harm. McFarren also gives this warning at the beginning. It is sometimes hard to read, but I think that McFarren did a wonderful job of writing about it to show the struggle of these experiences.
The subject matter in this book is well-developed and intriguing. McFarren does a wonderful job of exploring these topics. The psychological thriller aspect of this book made it stand out, pulled me in, and made for an emotional and intense adventure. The overarching layer of the book with the murder and time travel gave the book a little bit more fun adventure element that made the book an enjoyable read. I appreciated these elements because they added magic and mystery to the story that was woven in really well with Skylar’s mental journey.
I very much enjoyed reading this book. It was nothing like I expected but captured my attention from the very beginning and made for an engaging and powerful read. I would highly recommend this book and will definitely be following this author to find more of her work in the future.

Time travel, action, heart pounding suspense and a families destiny. If any of those words sound interesting to you, then
High Flying should be put on your TBR list. In this book, Skylar has dealt with her personal demons for years, to the point she tries to escape them any chance she can. Recently, she has started stunt piloting, which is terrifying and exhilarating all at once. During a recent flight, a mysterious storm comes on in a flash, and Skylar is almost hit by another plan. Before she can brace for impact, she is thrust into the past. Before she’s born, and before the death of her father.

Though she is confused and worried about getting back to the present, Skylar realizes the gift that she’s been given. She can see her father, and she can possibly change history, so that he doesn’t pass away after all. We’ve all had those moments where we wished we could go back and see a family member that has passed away, Skylar is given a wonderful opportunity and she doesn’t take it lightly.

There are some things that happened in the past that Skylar didn’t know, and some people from her present that had a lot to do with the things that went wrong in her life, as well as her dads. Skylar realizes that her father is mixed up with some really bad people, and she needs to try and figure out how to get him away from them, but ends up getting herself in a sticky situation as well.

This book has all the elements of a perfect storm (ha, no pun intended) of storytelling. Usually I really love time travel in books, and this one brought it to a whole new level. I love that it happened quickly, and that there wasn’t too much to think about how it happened, just that there was a reason for it and Skylar had a mission.

Watching Skylar come to the realization that her life could have been much different if her father had lived, and that her personal demons came from things that happened in her past was very truthful to how most of us live our lives. Skylar is a brave soul, her character is very inspiring in this novel. I love that she took her destiny full force and didn’t try to shy away from what she had to do to help the present and her situation.

This book will grab you from the first page and won’t let go until long after you’re done reading. The author Kaylin McFarrin can create the perfect atmosphere to bring her story to life. She is also very open about certain traumatic experiences like death, self-harm, and mental illnesses like anxiety and depression. Reading about these so openly was a breath of fresh air. Next time you are in the mood for a suspenseful psychological thriller with a sweet family aspect, you should definitely try this book. It won’t let you down.

Skylar Haines has always been an adrenaline junky, but it has always been so she could avoid thinking about her inner demons. Seeking further escape from these fears and struggles, she becomes a stunt pilot, after finding a love for flying. During one such stunt, she encounters a strange storm where after emerging from a perilous dive, finds herself landing in a different time. Yet, it is not just any time, but exactly eight months prior to her birth and one week before her father was murdered. Skylar now faces several options to either help or worsen her family’s situation, the question will be, and can she do it before she is somehow sent back?

McFarren has created a rather fantastic and intimate thriller. Skylar pulls you in by virtue of her compelling, but wounded personality and the tension is immediate. The story is fast-paced and remains a very high level psychological thriller, while dealing with not only the personal issues of Skylar, but greater society ones as well. There are comments on gangs, drugs, and self-harm, as well as other more “hot button” issues. This adds some depth to the novel in question and shows that McFarren is more than willing not to leave any story unturned in that way.

Skylar also grows throughout the novel as she receives insight as to how her family is, by watching their history play out before her. This is an interesting reflection, though not new, but the engagement in it by McFarren is enjoyable and only hammers our heroine’s characterization further. The interaction between herself and her young father is touching and it truly comes through in the story.

While the time travel is a pure McGuffin it would have been nice if McFarren had addressed this further at some point. There are some portions of the book may seem hard to follow given by how brisk the prose and narrative can be, which is just the author leaning perhaps too much into the thriller genre. Another causality of this to some degree are the “bad guys” who are present in the past and they become a little lost in the plot as well.

Overall, the book comes to a satisfying, though played out ending. McFarren can tell a decent story and this much can be seen in her work here.

There is a trigger warning note placed before the rest of the book, which is appreciated. Readers who enjoy psychological thrillers and young adultish stories should be encouraged to check this story out!

High Flying by Kaylin McFarren is a surprising, twisting, turning story of heartbreak, family, friendship and hubris. The main character Skylar is a disturbed young woman driven by promises made to her teenage best friend to become a stunt pilot. One day, an unexpected and inexplicable accident catapults her back in time on a collision course with the father she never knew. What unfolds is a story of danger, drama and drug smuggling in the not-so-distant-past of Skylar's own life and the lives of those she thought she knew.

This book will give you whiplash as it throws one surprise and plot twist after another in your direction. The reader is treated to a nice dose of dramatic irony as Skylar meets character after character we recognize from her life in the future and see where they came from and, in some cases, come to understand how they ended up where they are in her time. It's a fun romp through the winding path of Skylar's father's life populated by a cast of colorful characters with equally colorful secrets.

My main complaint with this novel is the pacing. Some scenes are dramatically drawn out to their breaking parts, and others that should take chapters unfold in mere pages. The concept is fine and it's told in a fun way, but stylistically I think it needed some more smoothing out and streamlining. In general the editing of concept and style could have been a lot better, especially from an author who has several literary awards under her belt. From the style of writing it almost felt like it should have been a middle grade book, but the seediness of many of the characters' lives and the themes of self-harm, drug use, prostitution and more make it clear it's aimed towards an adult audience, so that could have been cleaned up a little.

Overall it's an interesting concept with high drama and lots of heart, and who doesn't love a time travel adventure? The ultimately uplifting ending is a nice change of pace from the fairly dire life most of the characters experience along the way, and the message of perseverance and kindness over tradition, greed and hardship is one that never gets old.

High Flying by Kaylin McFarren is a book with many genres: psychological, drama, action, adventure, comedy, suspense, and a touch of romance. The introduction instantly captured me because it gave me an impression that a great adventure awaits. It was then followed by a narrative poem that was still a part of the book’s introduction to an amazing story, and the author sure did write an amazing one.

There are many things I love about this book: (1) The dramatic opening that showed Skylar’s personality and anxiety disorder. I was able to relate to her anxieties and how she’s coping or not coping with different situations, (2) Skylar’s character is one that will be loved by many because of her courage and determination to go through life, (3) Skylar’s conversations with her dad were amusing, (4) The dialogue, in general, made me feel like I was watching a movie and could vividly picture the humorous scenes, dramatic outbursts, and entertaining action scenes, (5) The title is perfect for the story, referring to Skylar’s career as a pilot, and a metaphor related to drug-smuggling, (6) It teaches the value of family and friendship, (7) I was instantly excited upon reading the introduction, “In the beginning, God created man, but things didn’t get interesting until man created the airplane and a strong-minded woman to fly it,” (8) Every chapter has a quote related to its contents, and lastly (9) Considering its cliché theme, the storyline is quite impressive. I never thought I’d like another time travel story, but I did.

Surprisingly, despite the many things I love about this book, there is one thing I don’t like about it: it has poor editing. The good thing is, it didn’t impact my reading experience. Overall, I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. It’s packed with all genres possible in one book, so there are no dull moments. Each chapter kept me wanting for more, so I finished reading it in less than a day. That being said, I highly recommend this book to ALL mature readers, regardless of what genre of book you prefer.

High Flying is a high stakes adventure story with a little time travel fantasy thrown in for good measure.

Skylar Haines has been raised by her heartless grandfather since the death of her father in a suspicious plane crash and her derelict mother years later. She clashes with him on just about everything, but especially her tendencies toward anxiety and self-harm. It is only through leaning to fly — and perform aerial stunts — that Skylar comes into her own, finding something uniquely hers in which to throw her focus and energy.

But a chance incident during a performance at an air show takes Skylar literally back in time, to eight months before she was born, putting her directly in the path of her parents and other characters that will have huge impacts on her future fate. It turns out that so many of her personal demons are linked to ghosts of her tragic past. But can she use this chance to right past wrongs? And if she did, would that change everything, including who she is today?

Kaylin McFarren presents a psychological thriller that demands readers’ full attention from the first page. She takes her audience on a personal journey with Skylar, one which happens to be filled with intrigue and adventure. The result is a fast-paced read with a main character that has true personality and depth. Skylar is also the strong female lead that so many young adult females seek.

While characters are distinct, the “bad guys” do get a bit muddled in the heat of the action. Regardless, Flying High is a unique story angle that will delight readers of young adult fiction.

Besides a page-turning tale, the best part about Flying High is McFarren’s dedication to facing sensitive subjects head-on. Through its themes of loyalty, responsibility, and trust, this book teaches everyone that no matter what lies in one’s past, believing in oneself and learning to let go can help you move past it.

*I was given a copy of this book in return for my fair and honest review.*

High Flying is a high tension, hold on to the seat of your pants, thriller fused with a bolt of science fiction. If you love adventure, intrigue, and a unique plot, this book is for you!
It's 2018, and Skylar Haines is a stunt pilot, chasing her next adrenaline rush and running from the demons of her past. When her plane flies into a lightning storm during a stunt in Nevada, Skylar manages to safely land her plane, but quickly realizes she has gone back in time- 8 months before her birth. One week before her father was murdered. Can Skylar change the past in time to save the fate of her families future?
This is a fascinating crime/time travel thriller with a somewhat unstable yet strong heroine. There is so much more to this story than meets the eye. At the heart of the plot is a crime/thriller sub plot full of shocking revelations, secret identities and betrayals. Honestly, time travel didn't really need to be involved, as the thriller aspect holds the story up on it's own. Sometimes it felt that the time travel took away more than it gave to the plot.
The characterization was well done, all the characters fleshed out fairly well. We get to meet younger versions of people we meet at the beginning of the story, and it's interesting to see how and why they have changed and become who they have become over the the years. A great cast of characters with dark secrets. Skylar is a very sympathetic character and her story is heartbreaking, but this leads to what the story is about- perseverance, second chances, and forgiveness. Skylar fights with every fiber of her being to change her families destiny. She realizes she's been given a gift and takes full advantage of it. Definitely an MC to root for!
With a strong and bold writing style, a fantastic female protagonist and a original storyline, Kaylin McFarren will keep you on your toes and turning the pages with High Flying!

I really enjoyed this book! It was a perplexing page turner that I just could not put down. After mysteriously being sent back in time, Skylar Haines realizes she might be able to change her future by changing her past. Skylar is a troubled young girl that was raised by her emotionally unavailable grandfather in the wake of her parent's death. She suffers from anxiety and turns toward self-harm - something her grandfather does not handle in the appropriate way. Skylar discovers a love of flying and while competing in an air show she is mysteriously sent back in time. There she meets many of the adults she knows in her present as well as her late father.

Skylar hopes that she might be able to change her future by changing the past which presents the reader with an interesting conundrum. Should she change her past? Things are great in the present, but what if changing the past changes her? What if things are worse in the future after she changes things? As the reader, there have been several times in my life where I think "if I could just go back..." but, now fairly, I think would I? The opportunity to go back in time not only gives Skylar the chance to change things but it gives her a chance to fully understand what had gone so wrong in her life and it gives her a chance at closure.

Kaylin McFarren is an excellent writer that had me hooked after just the first few sentences. I was invested with Skylar for the get go and I coudn't put this book down until I knew what her outcome was. I will for sure be checking out other books from this author!

An awesome read!! This is my first McFarren novel, and the twists and turns that are woven into this gripping thriller has left me wanting more from this highly talented author. I will definitely be reading more of her work. This book is filled with characters that are life-like, a plot line that will keep you up long into the night, turning page after page to find out what happens, and an ending that will have you thinking.

If you could go back in time and change the past, would you? I honestly can’t say yes or no to that question. Sometimes, I wish I could, but ultimately, I want to stay where I’m at because I wouldn’t have some of the things or the people in my life today. But, the way McFarren created this time traveling, psychologically twisting novel was genius. I was instantly hooked on Skylar’s story. I could feel her emotions, I traveled with her to her past, I was twisted up in ways I didn’t know I could be twisted up as the dramatic scenes unfolded.

If you are looking for a gripping, intense, wonderfully written 4 star novel to escape reality with, then look no further than this awesome novel by a superbly talented author. McFarren will take you high into the skies as you get mixed up in the breath taking, heart pounding suspense of Skylar’s past, and present. Don’t miss it!

High Flying - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Wow! What pantheon of imagination, events, personality traits, characters and their interactions, a mystery with a flavour of  Back to the Future, supernatural elements, what if...? suspense and much much more lie within this tense, fast-moving drama.Kaylin McFarren's High Flying compares many nuances on the title - MC Sky(lar) Haines literally flies high, as part of her story details how she's a stunt pilot, therefore high flying is part of her career. Then again 'high flying' means having success in life/career and aiming high with the burning ambition to get to the very top - and naturally Skylar has ambition, bravery and the feistiness to fight her inner demons - that she flies higher and faster to get away from. When she time-travels back to 'become' her post-conception self, how will it affect Skylar if/when she returns to the present and going forward?
Kaylin McFarren's cleverly-written novel High Flying takes the lover of fantasy, seeker of truth and anyone who wants to get in touch with the reality of who they are/what their ancestry, family, past tragedy and having to overcome the odds means for the future. So many thought-provoking themes are concealed within this novel, showing how our feisty MC with her risk-taking gritty life of drama and changing realities, mean Skylar Haines won't be easily forgotten by anyone who meets her within its pages. Get your copy today - it's sure to be a winner!

Skylar Haines is a young pilot who has overcome a past filled with many hardships and tragedies to realize her dream of flying stunts in an airshow. As she is just about to complete her first show with her partner and love, Jake Brennen, a storm engulfs her plain and somehow she is transformed to the past, where her life is saved by a man named Dylan, who turns out to be the father she never knew due to his death prior to her being born.

Skylar quickly learns that everything about her current life that she thought she knew is not what it seems. The legacy of her dead parents is not what she had been told, the connection to hear mentor Ethan is deeper than she once thought, the seemingly random death of her best friend may not have been random at all, and her grandfather may be more evil than she could ever have imagined. As Skylar attempts to change the future as she knows it, she also gains valuable insight into her family, friends and herself.

While touching on subjects of mental illness, substance abuse, trust issues and corruption, High Flying also shows just how much strength can be gained with right amount of determination. Sometimes the plot holes can cause a bit of confusion, but overall a nice read.

“High Flying” by Kaylin McFarren. This is the first book I have read by McFarren and it won’t be the last. “High Flying” is one of those books that have you hooked from the first page and doesn’t let go until you turn the last page. “High Flying” has it all action, adventure, thrills and time travel. The author keeps you on the edge of your seat. I did not want to stop reading even when I hit parts that made me hold my breath. This thriller of a book is an exciting and fast-paced time travel mystery novel, it also touches some very sensitive issues like dealing with self-harm, depression, drugs, loss and anxiety. I liked that the author added a note at the beginning of the story it warned readers about the potentially sensitive topics that are written about. High Flying is very well written and keeps you turning the pages. The main character is very well developed and believable Skylar is a very strong female, someone for young females to look up to, the adults on the other hand are very unlikeable. “High Flying will keep you guessing with all the twists and turns. This book has something for everyone. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you Suzy Approved Book Tours, Get Red PR and Kaylin McFarren for my copy of High Flying.

Kaylin McFarren does it again! She is one of those writers that grabs you into the story from the first sentence. She takes you through a journey and helps paint every moment in the book. I couldn't put it down and read it straight through.

Skylar Haines's upbringing and her illness are topics most people don't talk about, but Kaylin brings it to light with the stark realization that this is an issue that needs to be addressed. There is a way out and learning what is right for each individual is important. "High Flying" is an exciting time travel mystery thriller! You think you can figure certain things out in the book, then she puts a twist on it.

...ten minutes to survive the past!

I highly recommend "High Flying" to everyone!
You can find it on Amazon right now!
