Wicked from the Fear Street Seinor series is a book I was not looking g forward to reading ,but I decided to knock it out.I've only got two more in the series after this and I'm done. This story follows Marla Newman. She is getting ready for a debate today for valedictorian. She ends up bumping into a girl named Clarissa and she spills tea all over her sweater staining it.Clarissa apologizes but Marla wants none of it.She focuses her anger on Clarissa and she falls but claims she was pushed. Two girls end up talking to her,Elena and Roxanne are sophomores and they tell Marla she has the power.Marla has no idea what they are talking about but they want her to join them. She brushes them off and goes on with her buisness. At the speach thing Marla ends up not being able to talk, and ends up burping and the whole school laughs at her.The next day she goes to class, but agian people are laughing at her.She is in homeroom when they play a full recording of her burping in front of the class.Marla gets mad and makes a list of people that made her angry. She runs into the girls agian and they talk her into getting revenge. She first goes after the French teacher I think and make his teeth fall out in the middle of class. She then goes after Josie.Marla tries to keep things rather calm as she makes her clothes rip,but the two witchy girls have other ideas. They focus their energy and make Josie fly through a glass door.Marla is having second thoughts and wants out,but the girls explain that once you sign the pact it's blood for blood you have to die. That's where I am going to leave this one.I'll be happy to tell you all reading this that we have finally gotten another good Fear Street Seinors book. This one was really fun.I liked how crazy and dark it got. There are two scenes I really wanted to mention. One is where they mention their previous third party who have never found their head and the other is where Marla is trapped with trees surrounding her and one of the evil girls says they are going to cut her heart out and eat it.The climax in this one was also good and had a pretty cute romantic side to the story.I give Wicked a four our of five stars.
I'm extremely sad that I don't get to know what happened before this one but I was also extremely happy to read this one so glass half empty glass half full situation I guess.
Marla Newman has had a few mentions but this book is all about her once we get past a prologue that is going to show us what we can expect in the scary department and it is gloriously gory.
Marla's deal is that she wants to be the class valedictorian. What is it with these Shadyside kids wanting to be such high achievers? Oh yeah...their parents and in this case, Marla's mom.
Well Marla isn't exactly an angel. She wants to outdo Kenny Klein to win that coveted spot just because I guess despite his being a pretty nice guy. Clarissa Turner trips and gets tea on Marla's blouse and she just freaks out because she was all dressed for success to win at the debate going against Kenny.
Also, way back we were told that Marla took the job that Josie Maxwell wanted for the summer and since Josie is good friends with Clarissa she watches the scene unfold and seem to escalate. Walking away, Clarissa trips and swears Marla pushed her. Josie, Jennifer Fear and Trisha Conrad are also there and seem to agree with her.
Marla didn't push Clarissa...but she did think it. This seems to get the attention of two junior girls, Roxanne and Elena. They wear black, have creepy jewelry that came from this late 1990s version of Hot Topic and Spencer's so clean-cut looking Marla is not impressed when they sit at her table.
Even more not interested when they say that Marla has...the power. You know...witchcraft but a natural witch like in The Craft and they want her to join them.
Marla blows them off and later in the day at the debate, Marla literally chokes from nervousness and it all culminates in a huge blech. The auditorium rings with laughter, Marla is mortified and Kenny beats her. The threshold for humiliation only grows when in French class, a recording of the incident blasts over the intercom for all of those not present to hear.
Marla finds that Josie, Clarissa, Trisha and Jennifer are behind it. Marla just can not catch a break but in Study Hall she vents her anger with writing down a list of people she hates. It's fine but she ends up putting almost all of her teachers and fellow seniors on that list for even the slightest well...slight given.
It comes back to bite her in the butt when it seems Josie gets a hold of it and posts it up for everyone to see. Instead of taking it in stride, Marla decides she's going to steal Josie's clothes during Gym and put them into the dumpster. Another karmic kick in the butt comes when Marla herself falls in and gets trapped.
Accident or on purpose, not sure but it is enough for Marla to now take Roxanne and Elena up on their offer of joining them in practicing The Dark Arts. To get revenge, to gain the spot of valedictorian she so rightly deserves.
It's fun at first and exciting to make people pay for laughing at her but soon Marla discovers that the power of course...has a price. It's even stated on the back of the book...blood.
Blood is the price Marla has to pay because that's what every dark power wants in return...
If Marla doesn't hold up her part of the pact she signed with her own blood in time she may meet a gruesome end...
Oh man there is so much I would love to spoil but I better stop before I say too much for those who have yet to read this entry in the Fear Street Seniors series. Twists, fake-outs, reveals and heart-stopping moments galore that almost had me passing out from holding my breath.
The climax and that ending...oh boy.
So now I am only one book away from finishing this series. Sadly, I'll have to miss out on the next episode but the finale...is just around the corner.
I never liked Marla Newman in this series cuz I thought she was a bitch but I seriously felt bad for her in the series after what happened to her cuz of those 2 girls
Barely four stars. Full of spoilers. I really wanted to like this book more than I did. We follow Marla who is in the lead for valedictorian but only by a tenth of a point in front of Kenny. She has a lot of pressure from her mom to be the best so she’s totally stressed out. At the start of the book she’s preparing for a debate against Kenny when Clarissa spills her tea on her perfectly planned outfit. As Clarissa is walking away Marla wishes she will fall, and then she does but Clarissa says she was pushed. But no one pushed her. Hmmmm. Gothy juniors Elena and Roxanne come up to her and tell her she has the power and should join them. Marla’s like get away freaks and leaves. At the debate Kenny is amazing and when it’s Marla’s turn she sees the two goth girls and suddenly her throat closes up and she can’t breathe and all she’s able to to is burp so obviously Kenny wins the debate. Marla is able to breathe but the girls are now gone. Next in French class Marla’s test is only an 85 and with Kenny getting a 97 he’s gonna beat her in becoming valedictorian. Later an announcement is over the speaker it’s Marla’s debate well burp. She’s humiliated she sees it was Josie and her friends. Josie is still mad that Marla took her summer job. Get over it Josie. Later Marla makes a hate list, which is basically everyone in the school faculty and lunch ladies included. Marla is becoming unglued. She goes home and her mother is like how’s your day, Marla starts telling her about her day and suddenly her test is a 98. Hmmm. She gets to school the next day and her hate list has been posted. Her life just sucks. So when Elena and Roxanne approach her again she’s like I’ll join you guys. The book becomes a convoluted witchy mess where they summon the dark power and Marla signs with her blood to join them. Then she uses her power to make a teachers teeth come out. Weird. And talks about pushing Josie through a glass door but decides against it. But it happens anyways. Marla is freaked out because she didn’t want to do it. Elena and Roxanne are like we did it we used your power. Then they tell her the dark evil needs blood and she has to kill. So she’s all like I’ll kill Kenny. She gets to his place and is all strangling him until she’s like I can’t do this and like tells him everything and he’s like it’s cool you tried to kill me, oh and my dad has books on witchcraft. These kids are so fucking dumb. Marla and Kenny are gonna fight back the meet up with the goth girls and it’s a fight to the death with Marla killing them both, the whole ending fight was dumb. Then twelve hours later Kenny rushes to Marla, who now has Kenny’s ring (like less than a day after she tried to strangle him to death but okay) and he’s like I deciphered the pact you signed even though it’s a dead language and it’s like if you kill anyone on your evil group with your powers you die twelve hours later and boom the ground opens up and Marla is dead. Okay that makes no sense because in the prolog another girl is killed by I’m assuming Elena and Roxanne and they are alive well after twelve hours. Make it make sense ugh. Also only one senior died. I’m so let down. The last two books better be so death heavy.
If Let's Party felt reminiscent of Scream, Wicked has more than a passing resemblance to The Craft. I don't mean that as a criticism. This is one of the more satisfying entries in the series--no fake-out cliffhangers (that I can remember, at least), no mundane explanations undercutting the supernatural elements, no twists to undermine the rest of the story. Also the ending is pretty sadistic.
Like Ty Sullivan in Sweetheart, Evil Heart, Marla Newman is a more dynamic protagonist than you normally see in Stine books precisely because she is kind of unlikable. Unlike Ty, though, she actually does seem to learn a lesson as a result of the events of the book. The fact that she develops some kind of control over dark forces, rather than simply falling victim to them, is interesting. I don't think that will come into play in future books, however.
The only real problem is that the revelation of the last chapter potentially contradicts the implications of the prologue, but I guess you can head-canon that into making sense.
Snippet: This was a pretty good read with an interesting plot, especially for fans of witchcraft. Of course, there are some pretty big issues, like how the pact exactly works. It’s very confusing. The power itself is also super confusing, because what even is it? It seems like people have the power before ever signing a pact, so does that mean the pact isn’t needed at all? It just strengthens the power? And if Marla had the power already, how come she never realised previously that she was able to manifest things so easily? And how did Roxanne and Elena know Marla had the power?
I wish Marla had taken advantage of the power before realising the horror of what she’d signed, because she didn’t really get much chance to enjoy herself with it. I did like her character though, she’s a huge bitch but she’d softened up by the end of the book...
Check out my full review linked up top for an in-depth recap :)
This was more of a The Craft fanfiction than anything. Marla is so concerned with being number one and graduating top of her class. It annoys her that Kenny is only 1/10 of a point behind her. But he's actually so sweet and kind of likes Marla and wants to help her. But she's so desperate to come out on top she realizes she has possession of the Power. And so do these two creepy goth chicks. And they tell Marla about the Dark Arts and make her sign this pact in blood even though it's in a language she doesn't understand. So using her cool new powers she kills them and then Drag Me To Hell happens, literally. While she's on the steps of the school the ground opens up and swallows her cause that was part of the pact, not being able to kill her "sisters". It was kind of a cool build up and a neat battle but what a wacky ending!
All the more reasons for me to watch The Craft since everybody pointed the similarities! I hated Marla at first since she was pretty much everyone's enemies but she kinda grew on me. I also loved the enemies to lovers trope between her and Kenny but what shame it had to end that way.
I feel like because I read the rest of the series back in Elementary school, I should read this one, because this one and 12 are the only one's I never read... Who knows if I'll actually get there or not though...
