Hector

Hector, le défenseur de Troie dans l'Iliade, semble un personnage bien fait pour intéresser et émouvoir un public de notre temps. C'est un héros plus humain qu'aucun autre. Homère aurait très bien pu montrer ce prince troyen sous un jour un peu hostile, comme un ennemi. Or, c'est le contraire qui se produit. En effet, Homère nous présente Hector, Hector seul, entouré des siens, de son père et de sa mère, de sa femme et de son enfant - et tout le monde connaît les adieux admirables d'Hector et d'Andromaque : ceci forme autour de la personne d'Hector un réseau de sympathie, d'inquiétude et de profonde pitié. Cette pitié trouve bientôt de quoi se justifier, car Hector va être tué dans le poème, il sera même maltraité après sa mort, Achille refusant de le laisser ensevelir. Ces chants d'Homère, qui sont les plus beaux et qui se terminent par un apaisement, expriment ainsi d'un bout à l'autre la douleur de la mort à la guerre et le devoir de respecter les corps des victimes. Deux thèmes qui ont de quoi toucher les hommes de notre époque tourmentée. Mais il se trouve aussi que ces textes sur la guerre de Troie n'ont pas cessé de vivre, d'être lus, d'être imités, d'être modifiés. Aussi je ne me suis pas contentée de cette relecture. À chaque fois j'ai voulu apporter des rapprochements : rapprochements avec d'autres textes grecs ; rapprochements avec des textes du Moyen Âge, de l'époque classique, de l'époque moderne; rapprochements même avec des scènes qu'il m'était arrivé de vivre ou de voir vivre. De cette façon, en plus de l'émotion suscitée par le poème luimême, le livre avait une chance de jeter quelques lumières sur un aspect particulier de l'histoire de la culture.

Jacqueline Worms de Romilly (March 26, 1913-December 18, 2010) was a French philologist, Classical scholar and writer of fiction of Jewish ancestry.

Born in Chartres, Eure-et-Loir, she studied at the lycée Molière, where she was the winner of the Concours général de latin and took the second prize in Greek in 1930. She then prepared for the École Normale Supérieure at the lycée Louis-le-Grand. She entered ENS Ulm in the class of 1933. She then passed the agrégation of Classics in 1936, and became a doctor of letters in 1947.

After having taught for some time in a school, she became a professor first at the University of Lille and subsequently at the Sorbonne (from 1957 to 1973). She was then elevated to the chair of Greek and the development of moral and political thought at the Collège de France — the first woman nominated to this prestigious institution. In 1988, she was the second woman (after Marguerite Yourcenar) to enter the Académie française, being elected to Chair #7, previously occupied by André Roussin. In 1995, she obtained Greek nationality and in 2000 was nominated Ambassador of Hellenism by the Greek government.

She was at one time president of the Association Guillaume Budé, and remains the honorary president of that institution.

Έκτορας...

Ο πιο πλήρης, ο πιο τραγικός και συνάμα ο πιο ανθρώπινος ήρωας της Ιλιάδας, δεν είναι Αχαιός, αλλά Τρώας. Γι' αυτόν μας μιλά και αυτόν μας αναλύει η εξαιρετική Jacqueline de Romilly, όχι με την κλινική αποστασιοποίση του ανατέμνοντος, αλλά με χάρη και τρυφερότητα, με έρωτα, θα έλεγε κανείς, για τον Έκτορα, την ελληνική σκέψη και τα ελληνικά γράμματα (και τα γράφω εγώ αυτά, που βλέπω σημαία παθαίνω αναφυλακτικό σοκ), με μια ματιά επιστημονική και δροσερή ταυτόχρονα, φρέσκια και αγαπησιάρικη, παρά το γεγονός ότι το βιβλίο γράφτηκε προς τη δύση του (μακρού ομολογουμένως και γεμάτου) βίου της, στην κάτι παρά πάνω από ώριμη ηλικία των 84 ετών (πρώτη έκδοση).

Ο Έκτορας ο πολεμιστής, ο σύζυγος, ο πατέρας, ο γιος, δέχονται το τρυφερό αλλά σίγουρο χάδι της ανάλυσης της Romilly και σε κάθε σελίδα ο αναγνώστης έχει την αίσθηση ότι το βιβλίο μιλά για κάποιον γνωστό του, κάποιον που, να, τον είδε χθες (ή προχθές ήταν;) και τον έχει ακόμα φρέσκο σαν ανάμνηση. Αυτή είναι και η μεγαλύτερη (κατ' εμέ) επιτυχία του βιβλίου. Η ανάλυση δεν ξενίζει, δεν είναι στρυφνή ή ακαδημαϊκίστικη, είναι λόγια μια γυναίκας που αγαπά και η κρίση της χωρίς να επηρεάζεται ή να θολώνει από τη βαθειά αυτή αγάπη την κουβαλά σε κάθε σημείο στίξης. Γνωρίζουμε τον Έκτορα και ανακαλύπτουμε πτυχές του που ίσως να μην είχαμε προσέξει, η σκέψη και δράση του ερμηνεύονται διεξοδικά με πραότητα και μια ανθρωπιά που τείνει να αρθεί πάνω από τα επιστημονικά μέτρα, η Jacqueline de Romilly αγαπά τον Έκτορα με πάθος και τρυφερότητα και το αποδεικνύει σε κάθε σχεδόν γραμμή που του αφιερώνει.

I have such a fond memory of this book.

It’s a tour guide of a city we all know; but instead of focusing on the main event, there’s a clear, learned and gentle voice saying : the Muses can sing of the wrath of Achilles but us readers, us library rats and investigators, we can take a turn left.

We can look to Hector.

Just like that, there they are, the secondary strokes of genius of Homer, deepened by time and poetic endeavors. There is Andromache, with her happy tears, the elegiac heroin of Racine and Baudelaire. There is Hecuba, not yet the furious queen Euripides wrote about, not quite the image of grief Hamlet longs to hear about and yet, the very same. There is Ulysses, cruel and arrogant, on the brink of an errance that can never end.

The Iliad is a story made world, an ancient and complex monster. Jacqueline de Romilly allows its depth to shine through masterfully.

I could never express how grateful I am for the time she devoted to these stories I love, dissecting them, interpreting them with disarming eagerness and confident erudition.

You simply have to read two pages of hers to understand how precious her work is, how vibrant and full of heart.

I care about it and I care about her!
