East of the Sun West of the Moon
Read by Max Von Sydow Music by Lyle Mays
When a great white bear comes to a home of a poor peasant and his family, the bear promises that he will make the family rich if they give him his youngest daughter. The family agrees and the young girl is sent to live with the bear. Later on, however, the young girl finds out that the bear is actually a cursed prince and she sets off to the castle that lies east of the sun west of the moon to break the prince's curse.
The Five Chinese Brothers
Read by John Lone
When the evil emperor takes one of the Chinese brothers hostage after the Chinese brother tried to help build the Great Wall of China, his brothers try to come to his rescue.
This audio cd that contains four stories which are Anansi, East of the Sun West of the Moon, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, and The Five Chinese Brothers is a classic audio cd that many children will love for many years.
Rabbit Ears World Tales Volume 1, read by John Hurt and John Lone is a folklore collection audiobook. It is most likely intended for children ages 4-8.
Summary: A collection of two read-aloud folktales: The adventures of Aladdin with his magic lamp, and a tale of how five Chinese brothers with superhuman powers defeated the evil emperor.
Evaluation: I rated this audiobook 5 stars because it perfectly combines master storytelling with music and effects. What is interesting about this audiobook is the music that goes along with the speech. I believe that the music really helps to set the tone of the stories and because of it the listener is immediately immersed in the story. The language that the storytellers use occasionally includes difficult words but hearing them read aloud and in context is really all young children need to piece together their meanings. The storytellers really are masters of what they do: suggesting drama in the pace of their speech and creating a mood of excitement and mystery that has listeners constantly wanting to find out what happens next. This audiobook would be very appealing to young listeners because the stories are about far-away lands and magical powers, and because it immerses the listener completely and never gets boring. When working with children, after listening to this audiobook together, a class could discuss which story out of the two they liked the best and why.
Found this collection by chance at a library book sale, and was pleasantly surprised! I'd heard about the Rabbit Ears audio books in recent searches for folk tale collections, but hadn't had a chance to look into them until now. Four great and entertaining tales, read expertly by known actors. My particular favorite in this collection is "East of the Sun, West of the Moon." The format is convenient and user-friendly. A great way to wile away the afternoon enjoying some great tales.
