This was intriguing, entertaining, heartfelt at times while also devastating overall.
I'm sucked in & eager to hop into the main story! What an impactful & quick backstory for this phenomenal MC & world. It just gave me a taste of what is to come & I'm excited to continue.
It's hard not to love Rydel & be effected by all that he's going through. I was captivated from the start.
I listened to the audiobook which was so well done. The narration fit the story perfectly & I breezed through this fully immersed & wanting more!
This story ripped me open and left me in tears. I liked this character in the series and this story tells how Rydel came to be who he is in the main story. What a kick to the gut. I love him even more now.
I have not read the Ronin Saga yet, so I'm coming into the world fresh from this short. I found it to be powerful and absolutely beautifully written. I can't wait to start the series after this.
There were multiple outstanding reviews for this book. Many quoting another series of the author, which I have not read.
I felt the Sample was ok to good. The first three words are in a different font/size which was off putting. Maybe the author was shooting for an attempt at style.
My review is mainly based on quality versus length. If you were comparing to say a book like Penric's Mission: Penric & Desdemona Book 4 from Bujold, an experienced author with more than 30 yrs of best selling experience. The quality vs length and cost is not there. Her book for example has over 250 reviews and over 250 pages for $3.99 and yet this author feels he should be able to get a higher price for a measly 83 pages.
Way overpriced for length and writing/story quality.
I supposed that is why he only has 7 reviews all written within a 2 week period with no reviews written since.
I know my review is harsh, but I feel this is more a short story /Novella and should be advertised/priced as such. I was all most going to buy to see if the story would improve, but I have learned to check for misleading reviews/length. Once I saw it was a short story, I am glad I checked.
I also wonder about the other reviews authenticity based on all of them being 5 stars in a 2 wk period with none written in the 3 month period following.
Suggested price is K.U. or $o.99 . Even then I wasn't overwhelmed by the sample.
I did enjoy the story although I feel like it could have been better with an additional 20-30 pages and another round of editing, at least.
There were quite a few errors that pulled me from the story ranging from a missing space (which could be just a missed formatting error from computer to print) to sentences that honestly didn't make sense. They felt as though in the editing process, there were two combined but without adjusting the wording appropriately? I don't know.
I also thought the love interest did not add anything to the story and the nickname of "love" came from nowhere. I knew they'd hook up from the first interaction, but the lead up was lacking. When she died, I didn't feel much because her character was pretty flat. She was a fighter and liked him because he was different. that's pretty much it. To me, the story wouldn't change if she was not in it, which is a shame because a badass woman who can kick the ass of cocky men is up my alley.
All that being said, I'm intrigued by the story itself and am looking forward to Book One: The Knife's Edge and to more dragons! 🐉🐉 (We do need more dragon emojis though)

It was good. Definitely answered my questions on the mystery of the "Hidden" from his other books. I think there should have been more in Rydel's "experience" in his final test to be a Hidden (trying not to spoil). The depth of where his experience is placed seemed like it was rushed along as a simple 1 day challenge. That challenge should have taken weeks and as such, much more in depth which is why I knock off a star.
The price ($4.99) is definitely not worth a story this short. This should be down in the $2 range.
Still, I will look forward to the other Ronin Saga books.
I received a review copy of this book. After reading the other stories I've read in this world, I have to say, this was the best one. It was very well written, and the story flowed well. Regretable some events in the story, but of course, you knew from the start things had to turn out the way they did. Well done indeed.
A short story that packs a serious punch! For such a slim book, Wolf delivers developed, nuanced characters, epic and vivid fight scenes, and a love story that tugs at the heart. Just when you think you know where it’s going, the story launches into a series of thrilling, unexpected twists. An awesome prequel and sampler that has me reaching for more of the Ronin Saga!
Easily accessible fantasy book that’s a quick and enjoyable read!
The audiobook is especially phenomenal as the way Wolf describes action scenes in such detail is his absolute strength. The voice narrator is incredible.
Truly captivating and pulls the listener in effortlessly! I can’t wait to jump into the rest of the Ronin series!
I met the author at Comic Con 2023 and bought this book from him. It was a very delightful read and I didn’t expect some of the twists. It’s a great short story and well written so I highly recommend it. I might ge looking into the series when I get more time to read.
The dialogue was decent. But I struggled with the general description and overall flow of everything else. It was hard to get truly sucked in. I'm glad so many people enjoy this, but it wasn't for me.
I absolutely loved this addition to the Ronin Saga. A great little look into known characters and build up a good picture of the character development. It answered most of my questions about ‘the hidden’ and was very well paced. I do wish the ultimate challenge was a bit longer, I feel like towards the end it was a bit rushed and I was just a bit muddled on how, what, where... but it wouldn’t stop me reading it again.
