A full color, manga-style graphic novel telling a brand-new story in the world of Disney Descendants, starring Dizzy — the granddaughter of Lady Tremaine — and featuring a host of Villain Kids from the Isle of the Lost! This is the first chapter of Disney Descendants: Dizzy's New Fortune.
Dizzy’s New Fortune is a really cute Descendants story that takes place between the second and third movie in the franchise. It follows Dizzy as she’s worrying about whether or not she’ll fit in at Auradon Prep.
The four villains this graphic novel focuses on are four of my favorites from the movies, so it was really fun to see more of them. They each truly got their own moments to shine in here and it was fun to see what they’re like away from the main characters from the movies.
There were some really sweet and heartfelt messages throughout this story about being unique. Kids can take a lot away from this story, but even reading this as an adult, it was a nice reminder of how we’re all unique and how we should embrace that instead of pretending to be someone we’re not.
I was hoping to love the book, but ended up liking it. This manga follows Dizzy (the grand daughter of one of Cindrella's step sisters). She gets an acceptance letter from King Ben inviting her to Auradon. There are fortune tellers, pirates, fashionistas and villains. Dizzy tries to fit in different roles as a ship mate, pirate etc and discovers herself.
My daughter was happy to read this graphic novel as she loved the cover. She said it is geared to kids of course more than to teens (she 13) and found it sometimes a bit boring for her but she loved all the graphics and said she'd likely read others in this series. It is an easy and short read.
My daughter gave it a 4 out of 5 stars mainly as she loved the graphics, a 3.5 for the story. She said it was weird to summarize the story at the end of the novel.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you liked the Isle of the Lost series or the Descendants movies - this manga is for you! It's really short, but it has vibrant colors and characters! It is not read in the traditional manga format though - it's Americanized.
Dizzy is the character in the hair salon who dreams of breaking free of the isle. Beware: here there be pirates who stand in her way. Will Dizzy be able to claim her ticket and make it off the island? Read on to find out!
*received from netgalley for free for honest review* This was a lot shorter/ as in not much happened than I thought? The art was great but yea pretty much nothing happened, great for kids learning to read though
Dizzy’s New Fortune Dizzy goes to Celia Faciler for a tarot card reading. She’s anxious to know what awaits her in Auradon. Even tho Celia has a reputation for faking her readings. Celia warns her before she starts to read that the reading might be shocking and some people have left. Dizzy calls her out on it and asks if she’s sure that’s the problem. (Dizzy is pretty bold).
The first card Dizzy pulls is the broom. Celia tells her it symbolizes the hard work she’s done to help people and also how she’s cleaned up after her friends (Evie, Jay, Carlos, and Mal) who’ve come back to the Isle. She points out how Carlos … no (Dizzy tells her) Mal came back. Dizzy tries to explain she was trying to escape.
Celia says that Dizzy helped them design some costumes (Dizzy corrects smoke bombs) that helped them escape the Uma and her pirate crew. Dizzy starts to sense Celia is full of bull and tries to make up an excuse to leave. Celia tells her to stay. She has two more cards left and she’s not satisfied the deal is off.
The next card is a wand signifying change, transformation, and new beginnings. She feels like its related to Auradon. Celia says she sees Dizzy at the salon when an unexpected guest arrived. He gave her an invitation to be a student at Auradon Prep. Dizzy is somewhat amazed that Celia knows this. She says the cards know all and continues. Even more so when Celia tells her the real reason, she’s there is to know about her future in Auradon. But look at that! The times up. So, Dizzy pays her more.
The third card (the future) is of a carriage. Dizzy thinks this is a good sign. Carriages take you many places. Celia says not necessarily. Sometimes they might take you places you *don’t* wanna go and warns Dizzy there are tough times ahead. Celia says not to take it to serious, but sometimes things happen. VK’s don’t always fit in in Auradon. And then something big is about to happen. Bigger than they can imagine. Dizzy asks how she can fit in and Celia says its getting late she better be going before her grandmother gets on her case.
Harry Hook and (Gil?) bump into Dizzy on her way out. Harry’s heard her and Celia talking and he says he knows just the guy to give Dizzy advice on fitting in. Dizzy tries on different dresses and wonders if she should go back to Celia. She’s not good at not fitting in. Gil and Harry show up and try to bully Dizzy into paying them, but she says if they wanna get paid they’ll have to work for it just like everyone else. But they say collecting money IS their job and they’ll stay as long as they need to. Dizzy hands over some money and they’re about to leave but they tell her they’ve heard she’s worried about fitting in at Auradon and her being a “designer” just ain’t gonna cut it.
So, they offer in turn for a days wages they teach her how to be a pirate. She agrees. Dizzy goes around watching Gil and Harry “collect money” from people, but when she tries she’s not assertive enough. She makes a horrible pirate but Harry says there was a shipment of stuff from Auradon and he just might know how to get Dizzy to redeem herself. It’s the ultimate pirate test. They tell her to meet them at the dock after sun down. Dizzy’s test is to climb in the window of a house and open the door to let him (Harry) in.
Celia and Harry argue over whose Dizzy is. Celia says she has plans for Dizzy. Harry says fine. She can have her. She’s the worse pirate he ever had. It turns out, Dizzy left him hanging the night before. Dizzy finds a list of all the things Harry stole and decides to give it all back. Harry tells her she might want to find her quick because he sent Gil after her. Interestingly, Gil thinks Auradon will be terrible and he does think Dizzy will fit in. He says it’s just better to do stuff with a partner. But then Celia finds Dizzy from a letter she left her grandma and Gil goes off to meet Harry. (Celia says he wants him for something important). Celia says that they should work together. She can do readings in Dizzy’s shop to better “track her energies”. Dizzy says she’ll talk to her grandmother and see if they can set up a space for her in the corner.
Dizzy actually finds working with Celia fun. She tries to teach her how to read the cards but she’s not good at it and Celia tells her she’ll need her help to find the answer. But soon Celia starts taking over the shop. Dizzy even finds her trying to get private information on her clients. She starts to wonder if its all a scam. But that’s just how life is on the Isle. Everyone out for themselves. Dizzy shuts down the shop and tells Celia she can’t lie and steal from her customers, but Celia tells her the customers are use to it. They live on the Isle.
Dizzy tells her maybe that’s true, but Evie told her that having a good heart is about doing the right thing. Even if you have to do it solo. Celia tells her she’ll never be Evie and neither will she. She starts to get angry and walk away a card falls. Celia says its for Dizzy but she can’t see the meaning. It’s too foggy. Dizzy suggest they talk about it when Celia comes to Auradon. Dizzy writes Evie and catches her up on everything that’s gone on. She tells Evie at first she was worried about coming to Auradon but she realized its silly to worry about what’s in a card. The only thing that’s waiting for her is Evie and new potential friends. She’s discovered she’s good with not fitting in.
My Thoughts: The illustrations were still decent but I enjoyed Evie’s Wicked Runway a little bit more than this one. I liked the these cards and the symbols (the broom, the wand, the carriage) but the plot… I never really felt the need to *fit in”. Being who I am is never something I had to be taught. I’ve always just seen it as you accept who I am or you don’t. If you don’t think oh well.. I guess that’s why I couldn’t connect to this one as much.

I was expecting a little bit more from this Disney manga. The pictures are cute but the story is very simple. However, it is aimed at children so I guess it’s appropriate. All in all, I enjoyed reading about the characters but the story would need to be more complex to give it more than 3 stars.
Thank you NetGalley and DBD for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Since my parents are always at work either on business trips or meetings, I have to be the one reading with my 8 year old sister. She loved it and gives it 5 stars. I personally liked it as well, me being a long time Descendants fan. Anywho, this comic has a interesting plot that leaves the reader wondering what will happen next since it ends with a cliffhanger. I also really liked the art style of each individual character, It kinda gives like a anime / manga vibe. I really hope to continue this story with my younger sister, Great Read!
This book was really good and i liked that they told us dizzy goes to Celia for her future in auradon.
This is a 5 out 5 for me and I choose this rating because it was a good story on dizzy's life and I liked that it told a story about dizzy going to Celia for her future in auradon and I recommend this book to all of the descendent fans out there
It was pretty adorable and a nice start to a probably curious series dating between Descendants 2 and 3. It's worth a quick read off you wanna hear some background between Dizzy and Cecila.

It's okay, kinda cute and intesting. Could be great for my cousin just not my kind of story, but to be fair being a 30yr old guy this story was really not meant for me lol.
