A year of separation has done little to discourage a werewolf's heart, even if the consequence is death.
Alpha Andreas Baron loves Gerwalta Faust, even if she is his natural enemy, and he will have none other for his mate. If only he can convince her of that before the Grand Matron awards his beloved's hand to another...
Gerwalta knows that to give in to desire would sentence Andreas to death. What she feels is irrelevant. She will not condemn him by falling for his attempts at seduction. When she's given a mission that will take her far from the Black Forest, Gerwalta pushes forward, thankful for the distance. Until she discovers that Andreas will be part of the party, that is. Their capture a band of seven deadly vampires whose schemes would place werewolves and vampires on opposite battlefields for Europe's two great empires. The true danger, however, arises when the wolf and the watcher, away from the influence of clan and pack, cross the point of no return, changing the course of the supernatural world forever...
This is the second book in the Red Hood Origins series. If you haven't read the first book, I highly recommend starting there. You will be a little lost otherwise. Would time apart help the burning desire Gerwalta has for Andreas? She sure hopes so. Andreas may just have other ideas. With twists and turns and political deception and intrigue this book kept me reading late into the evening because I didn't want to stop. Another excellent take on "Little Red."
This story had it all, strong female characters, werewolves, vampires and intrigue. There were some minor typo's but other than that, very well written.
I enjoyed this back story even more than the first one. I was lucky to be able to get my hands on a copy early for review. Getting to know the "how?' and the 'why?' behind Geri and Tobias' story is so helpful. And this book did not disappoint in the action and slow burn that I have come to expect from Kendrai. Watching Gerwalta try to hold herself and to an extreme standard of prejudice that her people have ingrained in themselves, and fail so perfectly, was very satisfying. It proved once again how letting yourself experience something you've always been told you shouldn't or couldn't can set you free. Gerwalta and Andreas still have farther to go until they reach the freedom to live their truth in peace, but they are on the right path.
I rather enjoyed the banter between Andreas and Gerwalta. I was happy with the the time that they spent apart so she could grow older and more mature so that the intensity of the slow burn grew making it even more satisfying. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, Ms. Meeks sent another curveball my way, keeping my heart beating faster and clutching my kindle harder in frustration. LOL. I did get a little confused with all of the names that a certain mysterious vampire went by, but I suppose that is to be expected (and is most likely the point) with the many names one develops in immortality.
All in all getting to read this book before the next Red Hood release was a total bonus! I was a person who was 100% team Geri and Tobias and mildly liked the origin story in comparison. This book changed that for me and now Gerwalta and Andreas are giving them an incredibly run for their money!
The Wolf and the Watcher picks up a year after we last saw Andreas and Gerwalta, and Gerwalta has done her best to dissuade Andreas' affection for her. She can't seem to avoid him, though, when they are hired to complete a mission for a mysterious vampire. The chemistry between the two is palpable through the pages, heating up so much that my Kindle Fire practically lived up to its name. I admit that I had a hard time getting into this book at the beginning; with the way Beauty and the Betrayer ended, and knowing backstory from the Red Hood Chronicles, I was expecting a different start to this book. Once I got a few chapters in, though, it was hard to put down and I finished it in one night. Kendrai Meeks has a unique way of spinning fairy tales into new adventures and plot lines, and the way she ended this story (it went in a very different direction than I anticipated) has me excited for the next installment. I can't wait to get my hands on it!
The Wolf and the Watcher takes you on another adventure with Gerwalta and Andreas. Forced to work together again was not something that Gerwalta was hoping for, as she was trying to keep distance from the temptation that is in wolf form. Andreas spends the entire book trying to help Gerwalta face the facts and her feelings about him. Will she give in? Will she stay stubborn and continue to keep her distance from him? Overall, I enjoyed reading more about this couple and learning how they come to be. The ending was just what I was looking for, and leaves me excited to read the next book. There are a few new side characters with similar names, and I’ll admit, I did feel a little lost figuring out which was which a couple times. Besides that, it was good!
A year has past since Gerwalta and Andreas has not seen each other. Then one day Gerwalta goes in the pack land and sees Andreas and the feelings are the same. A vampire needs help and Gerwalta is sent to do the deed. Andreas is sent along. What will happen when they are throw together? Who is trying to kill them? Will they be able to complete their mission? Who will she marry? Who she wants, who her mother wants her to, or who else will want her? What will happen when everyone finds out the truth about her? I received a free copy for my honest review.
Great second book!! Gerwalta is sent on a mission to help an old vampire. Andreas is hired also without her knowledge and turns up on the road much to Gerwalta’s disbelief ,she has her will power over her feelings tested. Andreas however has no problem declaring his heart to the world even if it means his death. The dialogue between these characters is excellent as usual. The world building again is so good you get a real sense of the places. I’m looking forward to reading the third book.
