When a pirate festival blows into their small town, bakeshop owners Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and her best friend Ellie White expect they’ll be busy baking up a storm, but instead they find themselves marooned in a new murder investigation after someone kills a well-known food writer and TV personality . . .
Everything is shipshape at Jake and Ellie’s new waterfront bakery, The Chocolate Moose, especially now that the annual Pirate Festival is dropping anchor in their quaint island village of Eastport, Maine. Jake and Ellie are ready for the bounty of tourists sure to flood their shop. But their plans quickly sink when the body of celebrity foodie, Henry Hadlyme, is discovered in the Moose’s basement.
Jake and Ellie are horrified, but their shock turns to dismay when Jake is pegged for the murder. Now, to clear Jake’s name and save the shop, Jake and Ellie must swashbuckle down and figure out who among Henry’s numerous enemies scuttled him in the cellar. Was it a long-ago jilted sweetheart’s vengeful relative? His long-suffering personal assistant? Or perhaps some bitter-as-dark-chocolate unknown enemy, now aboard the mysterious ship lurking in Eastport’s harbor?
Alas, dead men tell no tales, so Jake and Ellie will have to get to the bottom of the case on their own and find the real killer before anyone else is forced to walk the plank . . .
Sarah Graves lives with her husband John, a musician and luthier, and their black Labrador Retriever in a house very much like the one Jacobia Tiptree is remodeling in Eastport, Maine. When she's not writing Jake's adventures, Sarah works with her husband on the house and she plays the 5-string banjo.
Librarian’s note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
I arrived in Eastport Maine at the chocolate moose to hang out with Jake and Ellie at the perfect time. Things were going great with the shop, and it’s the annual pirate festival. I love all things pirate! Aye matey. Yes things were great….well until the host of Eat This Henry Hadlyme showed up. A man with an over inflated ego about his celebrity status, a mean streak, and hidden agenda. He was in town doing podcast episodes for his show, and so far all he had done was make fun of the local businesses. Well Jake made it really clear (very publicly...I might add) that Henry was not welcome. Next thing I know Jake is finding Henry’s body in the basement of the shop. To make the “scuttlebutt” even worse Henry is found with a parrot pinned to his shoulder that belongs to Jake’s grandson, and he was killed with a weapon from her husband Wade’s collection. Ellie and I knew we needed to find the killer soon before a warrant was put out for Jake’s arrest.
My thoughts: This series continues to be up and down for me. The covers are always amazing, and I love the premise. Bakery cozies are my jam. The writing and mystery continues to be great! Fast paced and at times laugh out loud funny. I just never felt a big connection with Jake and Ellie or the chocolate moose. Sometimes their decisions are dumb and worthy of having to “walk the plank”. The supporting characters need to be more interesting, and please….less boat language talk.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank Netgalley, the author Sarah Graves, and the publisher for this opportunity.
Perhaps it's time for me to realize Sarah Graves and I need to break up. We've had a long and happy relationship, but we just aren't on the same page anymore. I'm not sure where to categorize her latest books, like terrorist thriller/cozy. In any case, I know most reviews love her latest book, so I will just say it wasn't for me. Jacobia "Jake" Triptree is suspected of murdering a disagreeable guest in town, when she and her buddy Ellie White come up against a plot to subvert the town's pirate festival. Much mayhem ensues. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
From practically the beginning of the book, Jake and Ellie were pitched right into a lot of action and adventure. Some of it was pretty funny like the snake and the caterpillars that Jake somehow met up with. After finding the dead body of a hateful TV foodie in her basement, Jake was eyed as a suspect, since the whole town had heard and seen her arguing with him and threatening him. With Ellie's help, Jake set about proving her innocence. Did she let a concussion or a bunch of scrapes stop her? Naaaaaa. Jake wasn't real great about following instructions or rules when it came to proving something.
This was a real roller coaster ride of a mystery. I had an idea of who was behind it and possibly why, but it was fun to read and see how much was going to happen before they got caught. Jake really managed to get into some crazy scrapes this time, but she and Ellie always came out as winners.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, and my opinions are my own.
The town's pirate festival promises to be good business for Jacobia "Jake" and her friend Ellie who own the local bakery. When a man turns up dead in their basement, Jake becomes the chief suspect and knows she needs to catch the person or persons responsible before she lands in jail. The bakery plays a secondary role in this adventure with the seaside location paramount. While the main characters feel better developed than in the first installment, the mystery itself needs better plotting. Jake and Ellie come across as bumbling fools who fail to heed their own intuition, rather than clever amateur detectives. I almost quit reading this installment when a snake scene went on far too long. Potential exists for the series, but it still needs a dose of reality achieve it.
We arrive in Eastport, Maine just in time for the annual Pirate Festival. Jake and Ellie are ready to welcome all the matey’s to The Chocolate Moose with the exception of celebrity foodie, Henry Hadlyme. The man definitely has a hidden agenda and the bakers want nothing to do with him. But that was not meant to be. When Jake goes to the basement for some cleaning supplies she finds the man’s dead body. What makes the tragedy even worse Jake becomes the police’s prime suspect. Shivers me timbers and batten down the hatches. Can she and Ellie clear her name or will she be joining some other scallywags behind bars?
Oh, what a fun story! This series is a continuation/spinoff of Sarah Graves’ A Home Repair is Homicide Mystery series but they can easily be read on their own.
I really like the family aspect in this series and how close Jake and Ellie are. The whole dynamic can bring both humor and drama to the story. All the characters are very well-developed but the author always seems to introduce new things about them in each book.
The mystery really takes off when a huge mysterious ship arrives in the harbor setting off a large explosion that rocks Eastport. Could it be connected to the very dead Henry Hadlyme? Ms. Graves sets off a great set of twists and turns herself. The pace really picks up as we find Ellie and Jake in some dire situations that had this reader on the edge of my seat. I did think I had most of the mystery figured out but was gobsmacked when all was revealed.
Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut was a wild mystery and a Perfect Escape. Death by Chocolate Snickerdoodle is screaming at me from my TBR stack. I hope to indulge in that tasty morsel soon
I really liked this one. I thought the pirate themed festival in their town was cute. Everything happening on boats in the water. It's perfect for a cozy mystery. While boats and the open water can seem comforting and beautiful, it can also be dark and scary. This went really well in the story. I really like the main character, Jacobia (Jake). She's tough and would do anything for her family, even living in a full house with them. I wouldn't feel the same myself having so many people in my house, but it makes her wholesome and loveable. The mystery was pretty good. I find the writing entertaining. I'm really enjoying the series and ready for the next one. Happy reading and good night. 🦜⛵️🛟⚓️🍩
Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut by Sarah Graves is the 3rd book in the Death by Chocolate Mystery series, and another fun addition. Jacobia (Jake) Tiptree and her best friend, Ellie White, from the Home Repair is Homicide series, have opened up a waterfront bakery called The Chocolate Moose, In Eastport, Maine. The Chocolate Moose, and the rest of the town is getting ready to rake in the business during the Pirate Festival. When a man, who Jake recently had an argument with, is found dead in the basement of their store, the sleuthing begins. I love the uniqueness of this book, especially with the pirate ship, that's all I'm going to say about that, but I couldn't stop reading. I only read one or two of the Home Repair is Homicide books, but I might have to read them all. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book and the first one too.. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is the first book I've read in this series. I have read lots of Ms. Graves work in the Home Repair is Homicide series and really enjoyed that. So I was looking forward to a new series, not realizing that she had given Jake and Ellie something else to work on. I loved it! It's great seeing them again and the mystery was really involved. I love all of the characters and they didn't disappoint. I also love the bakery and hearing about all of the treats. Just wish that they could come with the book somehow. I'm much more an eater than baker. LOL! Can't wait to read more of this series. I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher and voluntarily chose to review it.
Pirates and pompousness descend upon Eastport, Maine for the annual Eastport Pirate Festival. The pirates are everywhere which is good for business at the Chocolate Moose bakery owned and operated by Jake (Jacobia) Tiptree and Ellie White. The pompous part is played by Henry Hadlyme, well-known food authority and TV personality. Hadlyme, much former resident of Eastport is back and making waves by making scornful remarks about several of the local eateries including the Chocolate Moose. To even insinuate that they used carob instead of the finest ingredients was mutinous. His haughty attitude does not help him one but and does nothing but rile up Jake when he dares to show up to tape a podcast segment at the shop. Unfortuneately for Jake and her proclivity to be fiercely protective of her own (business, family, friends, town) a very loud and public scene takes place. Next comes the finding of Hadlyme's dead body, in the Moose's cellar, skewered with Wade's antique cutlass and adorned with Ephraim's plush parrot. Suspect #1 is Jake who is not going down this road again even though her good friend, police chief Bob, does not have her on his list, the State police just might. One thing to know about this book is that you are going to be craving chocolate before the end and wondering just how Jake gets herself into the positions/scrapes that she does. Oh wait, nope you'll quickly realize that she has a partner in crime, or rather crime-solving by was of her best friend and partner Ellie. It seems that there is more than one person who didn't like Hadlyme and they are actually locals. Old history and new motives will be discovered, sort of like the Double-Chocolate Ginger cookies (recipe at the end of the book) who would have though to make a wafer cookie with candied ginger and chocolate. The only thing more mysterious in this story than the sleek black pirate ship named the Jenny is the absence of the recipe for their chocolate donuts. This is a very entertaining story, it has several plot twists and keeps you going right up to the end. You do not have to be familiar with the characters and the author does a nice job of including a few pages of past history for Jake so you can read just how she ended up in Eastport, with the Chocolate Moose, a very large home, and a husband named Wade. Not to mention that any book with recipes is a winner and recipes featuring chocolate is treasure worth searching for. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for access to the ARC in return for an honest review.
Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut by Sarah Graves started brilliantly and just kept on improving! Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and her best friend Ellie White own a chocolate-themed bakery, The Chocolate Moose, (love the name 🤎) in their island town of Eastport, Maine, and the events of this story happen during the town's pirate festival. An odious, well-known food writer and TV personality, Henry Hadlyme, is in town, working on a podcast featuring small New England towns, and Jake finds him murdered in The Chocolate Moose's basement. When Jake becomes the most likely suspect, she and Ellie endeavour to prove Jake's innocence, and in doing so, reveal a bewildering entanglement of other suspects and motives.
Although I have read “Death by Chocolate Malted Milkshake” (book #2 in the “A Death by Chocolate Mystery” series), I haven't read book #1 “Death by Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake” yet. I don’t think this hindered my enjoyment of this book in any way. I really adore the way Sarah Graves brings to life this fictional, yet seemingly real, small-town of Eastport.
Though I am partially familiar with the characters' histories, I think most readers who haven't read any of these books or the preceding “Home Repair is Homicide” series, should have no problems reading this as a stand-alone. This story is highly entertaining, with plenty of action and an ample choice of suspects. I was delighted with the dynamic among Jake's extended family, and the reveal at the end is fulfilling and more than a little shocking!
With its fabulous story and wonderful characters, I would recommend Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut to all lovers of cozy mysteries. If you prefer more suspense and mystery than humour to your cozy reading, then this would be a superb choice. I hope this series continues and I can keep following Jake and Ellie's madcap adventures. My rating is five out of five chocolate hearts! 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎
I received a complimentary copy of this novel, at my own request, from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
In this third book of the series things are going well at Jake and Ellie's bakery and they are looking forward to the upcoming annual Pirate Festival. There will be an influx of tourists and that will definitely bring money to it only the town but to their bakery as well. Things go from positive and happy to utter shock for the ladies when the body of a celebrity foodie, Henry Hadlyme, is found in the bakery basement. How did he and up there and who killed him are the most important questions the ladies.need to answer. It gets even worse when it looks like Jake is who the cops are looking at as the killer. Now the most important thing is clearing Makes name while they hunt for the real murderer. Can the ladies figure things out before Jake ends.up in jail? Follow along as the two look through the Henry's family, enemy list, and past employees in hopes of finding a killer among them. This is such a fun series, filled with wonderful characters and a setting to die for.
Overall I liked this book. There was a murder that took place. Now they have decided that Jake was behind it. Her and Ellie now spend the book trying to clear her name. I will admit this would have been better if the ending had gone a little different. Hopefully if she writes another one it will go better.
I have enjoyed the previous two books in this series and this one was even better. Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and her best friend Ellie White are quite happy with how their shop, The Chocolate Moose, is finally becoming a successful business. Eastport, Maine is in the midst of the annual Pirate Festival and they are ready to welcome customers to the store. When Henry Hadlyme, a blogger and somewhat celebrity foodie, wants to film in their shop, Jake blocks his entrance and refuses his request. Their argument is heard by many and when he ends up dead in their basement, no less, she is the prime suspect. While not arrested yet, it gives her and Emily the time and opportunity to ask questions and follow up on leads they get.
This was an action packed story. From a rescue in the harbour, to a mysterious boat that has gun ports, a shot up store, and eventual kidnapping, these ladies seem to attract trouble. There are a few suspects, but many of the clues lead them into a cold case. Does it have anything to do with the recent murder? I really enjoy Jake and Ellie as the protagonists in these stories. They both seem to be down to earth, well accepted in the community, but put them together and they get into some pretty crazy situations. There is also some humour that had me giggling, especially when there are snakes involved. I am going to say, that you will have to suspend belief with this one, because some of the stuff that happens in this one is a bit over the top, even for a cozy mystery. The clues were there, but there was not a straight line to follow. I did figure out what was happening before the final reveal, but it was a lot of fun getting to the final climax of this one. If you enjoy a cozy mystery that is fun, adventurous and a bit hard to believe, then you will love this one.
This is my first Sarah Graves book and it is the third book in this series so I haven’t read the previous two. I really enjoyed the setting and I was able to catch up and understand what brought her to Maine and so I wasn’t confused. The reason I gave it three stars was the whole mystery part was so confusing and the end were she was catching the “ bad guy” I just couldn’t follow along! It was so crazy. I will try another one of her books though because I do like this character
Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree is one of the luckiest and unluckiest people in Eastport Maine.....that is if she was real. But she is not. Jake Tiptree lives in Eastport in a huge house with her husband, her son, his wife and their son, plus Jake's father and and his wife who also happens to be Jake's housekeeper. Jake and her best friend Ellie own The Chocolate Moose which is a bakery specializing in chocolate treats. In all that she is the luckiest person. She has a houseful of people who she loves and who love her. She works with her best friend and they get to see the enjoyment on people's faces while they eat the goodies from The Chocolate Moose. However the unlucky part is that she is always in the middle of a murder investigation.
Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut is the third book in the Death by Chocolate Mystery series by Sarah Graves and in this book it looks like Jake is heading straight to jail....do not pass Go and do not collect $200.
While the town is in the middle of their annual Pirate Festival, a well known food personality comes to town to do some podcasts for his Eat This show but no one in town is interested in doing it....especially Jake and she gets into an argument with him in front of the store and a bunch of people. So when he is found stabbed to death in the basement of The Chocolate Moose, Jake is at the top of the suspect list.
Of course everyone knows that Jake wouldn't kill anyone and if she did she wouldn't do it in the basement with a sword that belonged to her husband. Someone is going through a lot of trouble trying to frame Jake for the crime but who and why ?? Jake and Ellie decide to find out before the state police get to town and arrest Jake !!
Readers cannot help but love this series. You cannot help but love Jake and her friends and family. You will want to take a trip to Eastport to visit and taste the goodies they are making at The Chocolate Moose. And Graves will have readers so engrossed in the story that before you know it you will be closing the book and sitting back tired and hungry.......but well satisfied.
This is the third book in the Death by Chocolate mystery series by Sarah Graves.
You could just sense it on the wind that when a some-what popular podcaster is found dead that Jacobia, “Jake” for short, would end up being the one fingered for the crime. I mean, come on! The body was found in the basement of the bakery of Jake Tiptree and Ellie White own. It was an only natural assumption, right? The name of this dynamic duo’s bakery just cracks me up: The Chocolate Moose. So cute and so appropriate for the locale! They are hoping the business gets noticed a lot more since the Pirate festival is right on their doorstep. But I don’t think the notoriety in the form of a dead body is what they were thinking.
I thought this was a well written mystery that really kept me guessing. I have to admit that I had no clue as to the identity of the killer. No surprise there, right? The author’s always fool me. Dang red herrings! There is a lot of backstory which I thought was good since this was my first foray into the world of Death by Chocolate! Even though the premise says Jake and Ellie co-own the bakery, I felt like Jake was the main character here. I really resonated with her and her quirky personality. What a likable gal! And that is what you want in a story, people you resonate with whom you can follow and solve the mystery with. Enjoyed the heck out of this. Looking forward to book 4 (and books 1 & 2!)
I really think Graves and Alex Erickson should get together and do a collab. I mean Death by Chocolate and Death by Coffee. What a great match that would be!
If you love a good cozy mystery, you have to check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Jake and Ellie are not only best friends and owners of The Chocolate Moose but they are the worst influences on each other. In spite of being mothers and in Jake’s case, grandmother too, they get into one scrape after another. The reader can forgive them charging in where angels fear to tread. Jake finds an obnoxious food celebrity dead in the basement of the Moose. The fact that she had a very public spat with him and the murder weapon is an antique sword from her husband’s collection makes her a suspect. As the cherry on top, her grandson’s toy parrot is perched on the deceased shoulder. Thankfully the local cop does not believe Jake is the killer and that the set up is just a bit too perfect. But that does not mean she will not be arrested so the two ladies decide to investigate,. These two get into so many scary and life threatening situations in the course of one book .Somehow it never crosses the line and remains fun. The secondary theme- family- is equally engaging. Jake with four generations crammed into one house and another on the way is the poster child of a closely knit group. The villainous characters are products of loss, betrayal and abandonment. While the reader may think she has the mystery figured out, there are a couple of real twists that set the whole thing on its end. It makes for a great way to spend some hours. Five purrs and two paws up.
Jake is in real trouble. When an aggravating man with an inflated sense of importance shows up to do a podcast, he alienates many people in the community, including Jake. She threatens him to get him to leave her place of business, and later he is found there, dead. Now she, with Ellie’s help, must clear her name. To do so, she delves into the hated man’s past, and discovers she is not only one with reasons to despise him. The tale is entertaining, intriguing, filled with fascinating characters, and has enough twists in the plot to keep readers wondering how it will all shake out.
Jake and Ellie are excited by a pirate festival in town and how it can help in their chocolate store. Wanna be celebrity food critic wants to do a podcast from their store but he has a habit of putting stores down so Jake loudly in front of people has an argument with the food critic. When he is found dead in their store Jake is the prime suspect. The story seemed to drag and got very confusing with all the ships and boats.
I loved this book!! Great story!! Loved this series!! Hope she writes more books to this series!! Will read more of her books!! Received this book from Kensington books from netgally!!
The third in the Death by Chocolate mystery series, this book tells the story of what happens when, in the middle of a pirate festival, Jake (Jacobia) finds a dead body in the basement of the chocolate shop that she runs with her friend, Ellie. Because Jake has just argued publicly with the dead man and because the murder weapon belonged to her husband, she is the prime suspect, so Jake and Ellie do their best to find other suspects and to clear Jake's name. Despite grave danger to themselves, they succeed and uncover the true murderers.
Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut is the third book in Sarah Graves’ Death by Chocolate Mystery series. The characters are well developed, but the mystery in this book isn’t as well plotted as previous books.
Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and her friend, Ellie White, recently opened a bakery, The Chocolate Moose, in Eastport, Maine. When Jake finds the body of Henry Hadlyme, a food authority and TV personality she’d recently publically argued with, in the Chocolate Moose’s basement with a stuffed parrot pinned on his shoulder, which looked like her grandson’s, and a short sword in his chest, which appeared to be her husband’s, she becomes the prime suspect in his murder. Even though Jake had a motive, method, and a short period of opportunity, Ellie knows she’s innocent and is determined to prove it.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
This is a long time series with a name change. The Home Repair series has turned into the Death by Chocolate series with the same characters and settings... I am having trouble.
I find Ellie so much more interesting than Jake in the new books. Jake is a liability as Ellie spends more time pulling her up stairs, out of the cold water and making sure that the cases in their new business venture filled with chocolate goodies. Jake seems to be living the Perils of Pauline with family who care little for her.
The Lizzie Snow series, two books that came between the retooled tales, was a breath of fresh air. Quite different from the bumbling Lucy and Ethel show this series has turned into.
If my library was not closed and I was not sheltering in place, I probably would not have finished the book.
Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut” is the 3rd instalment in the "Death By Chocolate" mystery series by Sarah Graves.
I enjoy stories set in coastal locations, and the village of Eastport, Maine is a perfect setting from the description of harbour, the shops, the people. The protagonist Jake and her BFF Ellie have a wonderful friendship, always got each other’s back, plus I love her family.
There were plenty of suspects and plenty of twists and turns to keep me wanting to find out what will happen next. I did suspect the killer early on but then second guessed myself. The book was engaging from start to finish, grabbing your attention from the very beginning.
I highly recommend this series to all my cozy friends.
I requested and received an Advanced Readers copy from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Jake and Ellie make a fantastic team, and Death by Chocolate Frosted Doughnut is a great example of it. When Jake discovers a dead body, she becomes the number one suspect in his murder, which sets Ellie on a mission: prove Jake is innocent. While the mystery was fantastic and I had a great time reuniting with some favorite characters, I found the general writing lacking a bit. Usually this author always has something exciting going on in the background, and I didn't find that in this book. Be sure to pick up your copy on the release date.
It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last. It's an entertaining story with a good story line, an interesting cast of characters and a solid mystery that kept me guessing. I look forward to reading other story by this author, recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
