Thomas Kestrel must choose between the life he wants and a duty to his people. Both are threatened by an ancient evil that only he can stop.Is he willing to risk everything?
Even though he has yet to master the ways of the Talent, Thomas commits himself to fighting the evil of the Shadow Lord and to destroying the beasts who poison the land. Knowing that he must pass three challenges to join the Sylvan Warriors -- an ancient, almost forgotten order pledged to fight the Shadow Lord, he still can’t escape the call of his homeland.
In The Call of the Sylvana, the second book in the epic sword and sorcery fantasy series The Sylvan Chronicles, Thomas Kestrel returns to his ancestral Highlands in an ill-fated attempt to help the people who feared him as a child.
Learning that the High King is enslaving the Highlanders, Thomas devises a scheme to help.
Unfortunately, his plans implode, and Thomas must choose between killing the man responsible for the pain and suffering of his people or saving an innocent.
Find out why readers of Peter’s books are “enthralled from beginning to end.” As one reader said, “I love reading this series!! The strength of character, the courage and fortitude. The humor and wit. Truly fun, exciting and powerful! Peter Wacht is an excellent craftsman and great storyteller!”
Growing up in New York when I was a kid, I used to haunt the science fiction and fantasy bookstore in Yonkers, searching for the epic fantasy stories that I loved to read. When I exhausted all my options, I started writing my own stories, never realizing that one day I would publish them.
As you read my stories, you’ll notice certain themes and I like to carry them over from one book to the next. I always include adventure, humor, a few twists, a bunch of fights (magic and steel), and a little romance, along with a few good monsters. But for me it always starts with engaging characters. Because without characters who grow and change as they seek to overcome the challenges placed before them, as they seek to move forward, the story can’t move forward.
In particular, I like to focus on the reluctant hero, a man or a woman not seeking glory, but rather seeking to help others and challenge the evil plaguing the world – a world that I’ve created, The Realms of the Talent and the Curse. They need to learn how to believe in themselves before they can do what’s demanded of them. A personal journey that all of us experience, often more than once in our lifetimes, from lack of belief to belief in the self.

Reading how Thomas trains and grows stronger was a satisfying read. I love wolves and the next animals I love after them are horses, so the fact that there are Unicorns in this story makes it all the more appealing to me. The last few scenes with Thomas fighting for the freedom of his people was exciting... I look forward to seeing more of this in the next few books available.
this is not a book... it is not even a novella... thank goodness I did not have to pay other than for my Kindle Subscription... this could easily have been put together this the next book in the series... I am getting tired of being taken by these epoepl who chop up their stories in to chapters to make another book one has to pay for...
This series is told in a third person omniscient point of view. I do think this book does bring the series up to a young adult and above. the beginning of the book begins about a week after the end of book 2. We get some very similar if not copied descriptions of a few characters from book one. there's also some repetitive dialogue and a bit of a continuity missed step or two as conversations had in book 1 are repeated as if they've never been taking place before.
If I would grade this book on its own accord it would be a three-star book. But given that it is entertaining and flows fairly well with the first book and it's meant to be part of a seven book series rather than a book in and of itself I think if four star is appropriate. They're a good bad things series like this. If planned out appropriately it's a fairly quick read that is entertaining. They're not too many errors in it but it doesn't have the normal feel of a book with a beginning middle and end so much as a continuation of a story that's already begun.
I do not like how the book ends because it is typical of such series in that it is a cliffhanger. and a normal book it would work because the next chapter would see to it. this does make this book series more of a Kindle unlimited series in my opinion. Nonetheless it is entertaining.
The time jumps or the passing of time is a bit confusing in this book series. It seems as if a year has passed I'll page quite suddenly at towards the last 70% of the book. It doesn't really make sense and doesn't really flow well because if you miss the single sentence that tells you it you'd be completely lost.
While I do complain a bit I do think the author at the very least planned out the series or book before he split it up in such a way that it will flow together quite well as a finished product. The bickering between the grandparents while humorous at times does get a bit old when every conversation or break in a conversation ends with one or the other being irritated, angry, or annoyed. While it is interesting and endearing to see it in a relationship for it to happen so often with the same consistency makes it a running gag rather than a personality quark of the pair.
As it is it is a really fast read and again what seems to be a fairly decent Kindle unlimited series.
Thomas has been trained in all available weapons, and without them, by a series of spirit teachers. Now, he must advance further on his own. He has learned the subjects his MGP have taught him; he is ever more proficient in the talent; his woodcraft is improving and he can go off on his own. He knows the enemies created by the Dark Lord. He has been pit on his own and out, at first, with his MGF. He has begun dreaming of the black unicorn with increasing frequency. His MGP are members of the Sylvan Warriors and Thomas wants to join. So, after one last exhilarating (and tiring) lesson, they're on their way. There is only one chance to join. You either succeed, quit, or die. What will happen to Thomas, and what will happen after should he survive the trials? Does the prophecy his MGP refers to somehow involve him, or someone else....or is it tangential to him somehow? How does his promise as a child to his PGF fit into the things he has learned from his MGP? Will he ever again see that girl with whom he was so taken? Take a reading journey through this book and find out the answer.
I like the book but there some instances that I thought was bad.
For example Thomas is described as a great marksman, but even with is bow and a vantage point, he still hide instead of helping.
I don't get why Thomas didn't try to exchange the enemy leader he had at his mercy for his companion instead of just giving up. Make no sense to me to not even try bargaining.
There's about 200 Sylvanna warrior and not one of them though to reduce the enemy strength by killing warlocks and reducing the strength of the high king who is weakening the support they can get against the dark lord. The people that's supposed to protect the human just seem to be betting on a prophecy, instead of preparing themselves for the fight.
This is just some stuff that I had a hard time with, thanks for reading me venting my frustration. I will still continue to read the series since even after all that I want to know more about the continuations of Thomas journey.

Thomas grows in both skill and knowledge. But can he learn fast enough?
Thomas is fast becoming a fighter to be reckoned with, is still learning who he is and dreaming every night about the black unicorn.
His grandparents continue to train him in both the physical and magical realms waiting for the time to be right and for him to be Clyde called to his destiny
Finally he is called to the circle of the Sylvania and tested to determine if he will be accepted into the storied Sylvan forces.
This second volume continues with as much excitement as the first and provides solid reason to continue reading more. The hero becomes more significant in reclaiming the highlands and becomes more powerful due to his training. It’s hard to put the book down as curiosity builds. Love it, and will continue on to the next in the series. I highly recommend this series up to this point with more to come.
Well the story ends in a cliffhanger. The basic story is where the protagonist becomes of age, knows who is to protect and makes a few mistakes along the way. Accepts the call of the Sylvana, an elite group of people. They are the protectors from the dark lord. The story is well written. Easy to read and a little predicable. But, I will read book three. Because, I basically liked the characters and feel that there is more story lines to develop
Length and lackluster fluidity in writing not to mention severely overused tropes and a further step back in world building made this entry a bit hard to swallow. At times the book has me fully attentive and intrigued. It is a decent read, but lack of depth outside great characters left me iffy about future books in the series.
I almost put the first book in this series down. Too predictable. A story often told. But I went back to it and the imagination and the skillfully handled action scenes drew me on. Now I've finished the second book and the complexity still draws me onwards. The appearance of another strong character adds spice. I'm going to press forward with book three.
The great storyline continues, but this is really not a whole book, more like a part 2 of the storyline. This is not in anyway a complete story - it ends right in the middle of scene. I’ll keep reading only because the books are included with kindle unlimited. Not a fan of breaking up the plots in this way just to get another book published.
The book moves right along. Just enough depth to keep me interested but not so much as to be boring. There is enough detail to give me a picture then allows me to fill in with my imagination. I like it.
Great adventure story with training and learning of the hero. The imaginative creatures and settings of the highlands are captivating. Fast paced and exciting.
Thomas has been taught to fight by some of the greatest fighters in history. his Talent is constantly being honed. he has been chosen and now must decide just how to protect his Highlands.
This is a different and unique story, with strong/lovable characters who battle evil trying to save the people of their lands. Thomas is the main character who you'll be rooting for through out the series. Great Reading Everyone!
There is a good story in there somewhere but the writing is laborious with no respect for timelines, leaving the reader to sort it out himself/herself. I had hoped that as I progressed through the series it would become clearer, no such luck yet!
Book one got 5 stars from me. Book two was big on words but weak on action until the end. Then our hero demonstrates courage, ability, skills, and remarkable stupidity. Stupid doesn’t deserve more than 3 stars.
Thomas finds his place in the world as more responsibility on his shoulders.
Becoming a warrior as his grandparents knew he would was his next step in the prophesy. Now he must defend the Highlands and prepare to defeat the great evil.
Way more action in this book. The challenges Thomas overcame were intense. The final battle reminded me of a few scenes from The Witcher series. Oso is a way better companion than Dandelion.
Trite, hackneyed, predictable, I am really really disappointed by this volume, especially after the promising start. I WILL read the next volume sample. Hope it clears up soon
Book 2 is just as good as book 1. The story continues with Thomas taking on his new duty as a Sylvana monitoring the Highlands and beginning to rid the land of evil beings.
This was a good read but I finished it way too fast. I do like the build up in this story. The cliffhanger ending just made me want to get the next book ASAP
