Rose Gardner collects secrets the way other people collect junk—and now she’s being asked to expose them. Special Prosecutor Mason Deveraux has called a grand jury to investigate the corruption in the Sweet Branch Police Department, and he’s summoned Rose as a witness. Any topic is fair game, and the criminals in Fenton county are rightly scared of what she might share under oath. While trying to placate the lawless men, Rose is also caring for her dying sister, Violet. Only Violet’s doctor has fled town after selling prescriptions, and Rose is sure big-time drug dealer Denny Carmichael has his hand in the situation. She has no intention of investigating, but like with a lot of her cases, clues keep falling into her lap. Then, just when it feels like everything’s at a boiling point, Rose gets shocking news that turns her life upside down. Now, she’s not just soothing the criminals’ anxiety, but actively seeking allies for a fight she hasn’t asked for—and her enemy just might be the man she loves.
This book is beyond amazing! Epic. The most anticipated book of all the Rose books. And it was so worth waiting! A total whirlwind of all the possible emotions. Yes, I admit I've been laughing, crying (more than anything else), upset, angry, shocked, surprised, yelling and more.. I've been preparing myself to anything happening in this book (that's what I thought) but Denise proved it was not enough even though I knew it won't be enough. She is the master of telling the stories of her character's lives - yes, I believe they live their own lives and Denise put it in to words to make it available for us to read! That's a great TALENT! I love the way this story goes even if my silly heart disagrees.. I think there's no need to say I couldn't put it down even if I wanted to make it last longer. Haven't read it yet? Just grab it and prepare yourself for a wild ride! And, don't forget to read the Bonus scene at the end of book! You'll be amazed more!
Each book in the Rose Gardner series is more complex and unexpected than the one before. I have thought about this review more than any other I’ve ever written simply because it’s so hard not to include spoilers. This book, which I sat up most of the night reading, completely changes Rose’s world as we’ve come to accept it through her journey from 28-1/2 Wishes.
Rose is definitely not a shy, scared, inexperienced girl anymore; she has grown into a strong, independent, worldly woman who is willing to stand up to even the most hardened criminals in Henryetta.
More than once my jaw dropped open reading this book. There were also a few laughs, and several tears. Denise is a master storyteller, and this book is another example of her talent as a writer.
When you love a story so much!!! When you love a series so much!!! When you fall for characters time and time again!!! When I story grabs you so, so much you go through a whole gamut of emotions, before, during and for a long time after, then you know you just read something very magical.
The intense anxiety leading up to a new Rose Gardener release is real, especially for die-hard longtime fans... The build-up toward another visit to Henrietta reading more about Rose's life, living it with her, it's so powerful sleep is impossible. When you actually get the book and you hesitate to open it because you just don't know what's truly coming, even if in your head you might have some idea... Denise Grover Swank is such a masterful story-teller she always manages to throw in a few surprises, some good some not so good... But always worth it in the end... I am always still amazed to think after all these books it's only been a span of 18 months for Roses' life... I mean seriously this young woman has just grown from strength to strength, she is surrounded by people who love her and people who hate her just for being herself but I have a feeling the people who Love Rose will always outweigh those haters... Now I'm ready for the next chapter...
Rose's ex-boyfriend...no, not Joe...no, not Skeeter either...Rose's ex-boyfriend Mason has called her before a grand jury investigating corruption in Fenton County. Violet, her sister who has terminal cancer, is coming to the end of her life.
I don't know....there is other stuff as well.
But it doesn't add up to a story.
I struggled to finish this book and honestly the only reason I forced myself was because when Denise Grover Swank is good, she's great. But this book is evidence that even good authors occasionally write terrible books.
First I have to say this book completely blew me away! I was completely in love with it even as it ripped my heart to shreds. It was so powerful and emotionally charged. The stories and characters that Denise gives us are unlike any others. I could never pick an actual favorite book but this entire series is a favorite and I will recommend Rose to anyone and everyone I meet.
We first met Rose in Twenty-eight and a Half Wishes, she sucked us in and took us on a crazy ride. Rose has grown and changed so much since we first met her just like a real person would. But she still lives by her heart. She takes care of people and she inspires loyalty. She and all her strays are complex and wonderful characters. You don't have this many books if you don't have an insanely amazing story and characters. I love them all. Even the damaged ones.
I was up until 2 am reading because I literally couldn't stand to put it down until I was done. And when I finished I just stared at it and cried. This book hit me deep. It was amazing.
Im sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but this book fell pretty flat for me. What happened to the characters personalities, their individual voices that are usually so prominent in these books? They were decidedly bland in this instalment. The story was predictable. It lacked the usual drama and suspense. It was obvious from very near the beginning that Rose was pregnant. It was obvious that Rose would not betray anyone in her testimony. It was obvious that she would be kidnapped and come out smelling of roses, if you’ll pardon the pun. There were no surprises, no shocking revelations, no twists or suspense. Even the bonus scene was boring. To add to the problems, there were so many errors missed in editing, especially in the dialogue. I am a fan of the series and the author, but this book was sub par. Not up to the usual standard at all.

Who needs sleep anyways?! This coming from a person that loves her sleep! I couldn’t get enough of this book!!! So I just finished and I’m blown away!!! I knew it would be incredible and I was definitely not disappointed. I’m forever grateful that Denise follows her heart when her characters insist she tell their stories. This one was so much more than I could’ve ever hoped for and I’m especially happy with this turn of events. This book is beyond amazing. This book is beyond epic. This book is everything!
This book has been one of the most anticipated episodes from the whole Rose collection. It goes without saying, but I will, you need to have read the other editions, as this picks up pretty close to where book 4 ends.
I find these are the hardest books to review, purely because so much happens and I do not want to spoil anything for readers. These mysteries are jam packed full of action that your head will move back and forth like a good tennis match. I suggest grab some popcorn and buckle in for an amazing ride.
This installment mainly takes place at the farmhouse and it’s time frame is no more than a week. Which brings about a lot of things happening in a short amount of time, but that’s Rose’s life in a nut shell. There is a lot activity coming and going from Rose’s home and also some hustle and bustle happening around the town. Plenty of emotions come into play with every factor undertaking. Some readers may be shocked with the outcomes but I for one am please how Rose has adopted her new perspective of life. She has definitely matured since Twenty-eight and a Half Wishes but she has also gained so much wisdom.
1. Get a big drink and put it next to your reading chair. 2. Put a box of tissue there, too 3. Turn off your phone. 4. Order a pizza so the kids won't need you to cook dinner. 5. Hang a "Closed" sign on your door so no one will bother you.
So good! Just fantastic. Rose Gardner is a favorite, and the series just gets better and better. Denise Grover Swank knows what she's doing and she takes you on a fun, funny, scary, emotional, devastating, hopeful ride this time out.
Since I don't want to spoil it for you, just know that this installment of the Rose Gardner Investigations series really ups the game and moves things along at a breakneck pace. Whether the book leaves you teary-eyed, heartbroken, hopeful, or completely stressed out (as it did me!) it is absolutely going to affect you.
Things To Do After You've Read This Book:
1. Take a few deep breaths, in and out, and pull yourself together. 2. Refill that big drink and maybe add some booze to calm you down. 3. Give rave reviews of Come Rain or Shine on every platform you can! (You'll want to, trust me.) 4. Call your best friend and tell them to read this book. 5. Get something to eat, then start reading it again.
Seriously, this book is that good. Well done, Ms. Swank. Keep 'em coming; I'm already chomping at the bit for the next one.
Wow!!! Left absolutely speechless!! Five stars all the way! I know I say this about every new Rose Gardner book that comes out but this is my new favorite. Things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows but this was such an emotional book and I couldn’t put it down. I cried at least seven times, laughed out loud at least five or six, and gasped at many parts. I am so emotionally invested in this series it isn’t even funny and it’s all thanks to the amazing writing and the constant development of characters.
Come Rain or Shine is changing Rose’s whole life and I absolutely cannot wait to see where the series is heading after this. There is so much more I want to know and read about and I do not ever want to see this series end. There may already be many books in this series but they are all different and new. There is not one part of this series, or the previous one, that I can say is boring or feels repetitive and I absolutely love that. Come Rain or Shine had so many twists and turns that I could not guess where it was going and that is the best kind of book to read. I will try my best to patiently wait for the next book.
The Gasp that was heard around the world. I haven't killed over. So that is good. I am still in shock at how this book came out. I think this book defined everyone's new roll in Rose's life. There is a bunch of new information in this book. I LOVED every Minute of it. I Think Rose has grown in so many ways in the past year. She has really struggled with her Identity. She finally has started realizing who she is. It is going to be a huge surprise with how she is going to take on the new weight that has been put on her. It is also nice to see Joe growing more. He seems to have gotten himself together also. Maybe now we will see him and Rose trusting each other more. We see some oldies but goodies come back for this book. It was very nice to see that they are still around. I think Rose's new hand picked family is something that she is going to need. They all love her and I think she is finally seeing that. I am really having a hard time trying not to add spoilers. This book will rock your Rose foundation. Don't believe everything you see or hear. You don't know how this book is going to go. I am going to end this with a hallelujah and Amen Denise. You did a great job Shaking up the world. I RECITED THIS ARC FOR A HONEST REVIEW
I don't know how Denise manages to out do herself with each Rose book, but somehow she does. I have loved every single Rose Gardner book, but Come Rain or Shine has to be the best yet!! My emotions were all over the place. I sobbed several times, was angry, irritated, happy, laughed, and so many more emotions. Denise Grover Swank somehow gave me everything I wanted and some things I didn't even know I needed in this book. It amazes me how each character has grown throughout the series but still stay true to each of their characters. I am in awe of how wonderfully Denise writes her characters so I feel personally involved with the characters. I feel their heartbreak, happiness, and anger. I experience it with them. I am very eager for the what is to come next for each character.
Fabulous! Magnifico! Wonderful! Have the tissues ready when you begin this book. My emotions were all over the place! My heart will never be the same. Thank you, Denise Grover Swank, for showing me tears aren’t bad when you are sharing them with your friends. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series!
I was on a rollercoaster of emotions from the beginning. First I laughed, got mad and before I knew it I was crying and just when I thought I had calmed back down the roller coaster of emotions started all over again It’s hard to even express all the feelings that I had... you know a book it good when you are talking out loud to the characters and literally sitting on the edge of your seat with anticipation of what is getting ready to happen..
She has done it again. This book is everything you are hoping it to be and some you didn't even expect. My heart aches but I love the direction Denise is taking Rose and her world. You definitely want the bonus scene so click the link!
This book made me question why exactly I loved james malcolm for rose so much. Because he treated her so horribly. I also enjoyed the pregnancy twist that was thrown in!

I’ve really enjoyed this series but this feels like half a book and just a bit lacking. There wasn’t the usual mystery to solve and the book ended very abruptly. Skeeter Malcom was behaving so out of character it was just ridiculous.

Absolutely without a doubt the BEST Rose Gardner book yet!!!! I finished it in the wee hours of the morning and have been obsessed with it all day, rereading parts as I try to get ahold of my emotions. I can’t get enough of it. I laughed, screamed at the book many times, cried (lost track of how many times) and had many "OMG” moments. I literally feel like I’ve been on an emotional rollercoaster, but in the best way possible. It takes a special talent for an author to achieve what Denise Grover Swank has with this series, she draws you in and makes you feel a part of the book. I feel lost when I’ve finished a book and miss by friends and family in Henryetta. Get your copy now!!!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
This book is by far the best one in this series. Denise delivered a punch and it hit home. It is a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the book. I shed tears several times, yelled at people, and even belly laughed several times. Denise, you completely outdid yourself in this book, and I absolutely loved it. The bonus content at the end is just what I needed to read after this book. I can’t wait for the next installment and see where Rose takes us.
Completely mesmerizing! **Disclaimer – Once you start this book you WILL NOT be able to put it down! This is the 5th book in the Rose Garner Investigations series, and man, does this book make me feel all of the emotions! Over the past 4 years I have been keeping up with the folks in Henryetta (and I love them and love to hate some, too). Every time there is word of a new installment coming out I feel like a little kid on Christmas. I can’t wait to rip open the book and immerse myself in the world that Denise has so thoughtfully created. Talk about a book that rips your heart out! Be sure to have a box of tissues nearby because, if you have grown to love Rose and her friends and family, you will need it. There are so many things that happen in this book that I don’t want to say and give any spoilers. I finished the book in one day and spent the next day trying to wrap my head around what I just read. Once again, this one knocks it out of the park. I cannot wait to read Dirty Money when it comes out. In the meantime, I may have to go back, get out a new box of tissues and re-read Come Rain or Shine. (Why is this not a TV series yet???)
Denise has left me spent. Finishing her books dry eyed is becoming impossible. I have to start off by saying that I am so glad that Miss Mildred made an appearance in this book. I have missed her dearly and she is always bring a comedic element (we all know someone she reminds us of). In this book I feel we really see how much Rose has grown in her journey, and just how her previous decisions can come back to bite her in toosh, and just what her new decisions have in store for her and her unconventional family. NK and Rose's friendship is tested with more revelations coming to light, along with showcasing just how much love they have for one another. Joe's journey within the books are showing the man we all never knew we needed him to be. Will he be able to stay out of the criminal limelight for long though? I don't want to give spoilers, so I will end this with this book is an emotional rollercoaster right up until the very last sentence. It's a must to read this book.
Spoilers****Never back a mama or soon to be mama into a corner. She will claw your eyes out. I felt Rose's pregnancy coming as I finished the last book. My heart is so torn with her decisions and I can't wait for the next book. I am Team James all the way but I am so upset by his actions but I understand where Denise is coming from in this book. Rose is as tough as they come and now with her own child to protect and her niece and nephew since Violet has passed. I don't hesitate for one minute that she will do whatever needs to be done to keep them all safe. I don't condone the decision that she made about Joe but I am sure Denise has her reasons and it will all come to fruition soon. I just hope not too many people are destroyed by it. Once again Denise has kept me on my toes. These are by far my favorite books.
Oh my goodness! I don’t even know where to begin. Denise has really done it again. I didn’t know what to expect with Come Rain or Shine, I was honestly a bit worried for what was to come. But it most definitely DID NOT disappoint.
Rose is at a cross road...she’s got so many decisions to make and she being pulled in so many directions. The decisions she needs to make are life changing and she doesn’t know if she can handle it. But of course she keeps pushing through for the ones she loves.
This book pulls you in from the very beginning and you have to hold on tight. I experienced every single emotion you could think of while reading this book and I can’t wait for the next release in this series to continue this wild ride.
5 Stars... Rose Gardner's life is complicated... Her sister is dying, she is called before a Grand Jury to testify on the corruption in Fenton County, her love life is in shambles, and every which way she turns someone is out to get her... Who can she trust? How will she survive the loss? What will she do with life's unexpected gifts? Rose, aka Lady in Black, must dig deep for courage, strength, and perseverance to face all the unknowns that life has to offer and rise above to continue to soar... Traveling with the character of Rose Gardner has truly been an honor; her growth throughout both series has been a joy to watch... I continue to look forward to each and every book in this series with great anticipation as to how this story will continue to unfold... Still so many questions to ask and answers to behold!:)
When you pick up this book, be prepared to not put it down again until the end! WOW! Rose Gardner Investigations #5 was an emotional rollercoaster. Full of jaw dropping plot twists, that were both unexpected yet fit the story perfectly. My favorite part of Denise’s writing is the depth of the relationships that develop between the characters. The interactions are so real, evoking moments of tears, anger and laughter. Rose shows us that family is not limited to the one you are born into. These characters have become a family and I am always sad when the book ends and I have to wait for the next visit to Henryetta.
I really commend Denise for making brave choices with her characters. I know that they make their own way but Denise has to put the words on the page for us to read. This last installment really was a page turner and I was holding my breath, gasping and whisper shouting at Rose. Do I feel Rose made the right choice...no but at the end of the day I trust Denise and will follow the story to see where it leads us. I never read a book so fast as this series and I am always itching for more which just has to be taken for a positive sign! ❤
Wow! This book was unbelievably amazing! I laughed and cried! I am heartbroken for Rose but she has grown and is so much stronger than she was I know she will be ok! I love her friends that are now family. I couldn’t put the book down, sped through it because I had to know what happened, and can’t wait for my re-read! Love the Rose Gardner series! Thank you Denise for such an amazing story!!
This book literally kept me up all night. Once I started it I was unable to set it down until I read the last sentence and all I can say is I want more! If you have read the Rose Gardner books then you certainly don't want to miss this one. If you have never read them, then you are certainly missing out on some great reading.
This book, I don't know what to say without giving away too much. The characters and story lines are so well written, that you will find yourself yelling and crying while you read this. I loved and hated this book both at the same time. I just couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Make sure you read this book
Holy!!! This book is beyond amazing and worth the wait. Rose has come a looonggg way from the beginning of this series and she keeps surprising me everytime. This book goes into the relationship of Rose and Violet in such a way that it breaks your heart. And the ever evolving relationship between Rose and Joe. Love, love, love!
