The cure for our spiritual amnesia is the integration of Rumi’s lessons into daily life. There is a need to understand Islam in contemporary times. Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi is deeply rooted in the prophetic tradition. Rumi is the most populer poet of our age yet is almost completely misunderstood and misinterpreted in the popular culture. Within his Mesnevi, The Signs of the Unseen, and his other work, is the ‘Forgotten Message’ that can awaken one to the purpose of life. Today, when so many would like to read Rumi and remove any reference to Sufism and Islam, Shems Friedlander places him unequivocally within Sufism and the Heart of Islam, clearly and emphatically stating the necessity of studying Rumi in his essence, as a Sufi saint, the founder of the Mevlevi Order of Dervishes, as well as one of the greatest metaphysical poets and literary figures the world has known. Friedlander sheds new light on the relationship of Shems and Rumi and offers a theory about Shems’ disappearance not previously voiced. We are the heirs of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi. How will we treat this inheritance? Will we squander it among those who have been deceived by the world? “New York City’nin kalbinde” doğmuş olan Shems Friedlander ödüllü bir grafik tasarımcısı, usta bir fotoğrafçı, ressam, şair, film yapımcısı ve tasavvuf hakkında kitapları olan bir yazardır.
İkisi Hz. Mevlâna ve semazenler hakkında olmak üzere dokuz kitabı vardır. Tabloları New York ve Kahire’de sergilenmiş; çizim ve fotoğrafları muhtelif özel koleksiyonlarda yer almıştır. Çektiği Türk dervişlerin fotoğrafları, belgesel klasikleri hâline gelmiş; New York, Kahire, İskenderiye ve Dubai’de sergilenmiştir.
En son çektiği Faysal: Bir Kral’ın Mirası isimli belgesel filmin dünyada ilk gösterimi Kasım 2012’de Londra’daki BAFTA Tiyatrosu’nda gerçekleştirilmiş ve eser, Chagrin Falls Belgesel Film Festivali’nde gösterilmiştir.
Shems Friedlander başta Mekke, Medine, Kahire ve İstanbul olmak üzere bütün Ortadoğu’da muhtelif şeyh efendilerden feyz almış, istifade etmiştir.
Kraliyet İslami Araştırmalar Enstitüsü tarafından Sanat ve Kültür alanında 2012’nin “En Etkili 500 Müslümanı”ndan biri seçilmiştir.
Hâlihazırda Kahire’deki Amerikan Üniversitesi’nde görsel iletişim alanında profesör olarak ders veren Friedlander, dönüşümlü olarak Kahire ve İstanbul’da ikamet etmektedir.

Kalbin aklın almadığı akılları vardır, derler. Fakat kalbin bu mertebeye erişebilmesi için terbiye edilmesi gerekir. Ne mutlu bize ki, vahdetin ezeli nuruyla uyandırılmış bir kandil, bize kalbimizin dilinin okunacağı bir aydınlık sağlıyor. Mevlânâ Celâleddin Rûmî, o her okunuşu ayrı bir göz aydınlığı olan Mesnevi-i Şerif’de bize kalbimizi hatırlatıyor. Ne var ki, hakikat zamanla değişmese de, perdelenebiliyor; hakikatin mesajı unutulabiliyor. Shems Friedlander da Mevlânâ Celâleddin Rûmî’nin Unutulmuş Mesajı adlı eserinde unuttuğumuzu hatırlayalım diye bize vahdet dükkanından alınmış bir kandil uzatıyor.

Müslümanlıktan Ayrı Bir Tasavvuf Yok

Mevlânâ Hazretlerinin popüler olduğundan kimsenin şüphesi yok. Kısacık bir sosyal medya gezintisinde dahi kendisine atfedilen sözlere rastlayabiliyor, bir köşe yazısında ismine tesadüf edilebiliyor, Mevlevî ayin-i şerifine cüzi bir ücret karşılığı iştirak edebiliyoruz.

Shems Friedlander alışveriş listesi yazsın, onu dahi ilgi ve muhabbetle okurum herhalde. Hz. Mevlâna (ks) nasıl aşk ile kitleleri peşinden sürüklemiş ve bizler aynı topraklar üzerinde o hâlden bu hâle nasıl gelmişiz, insan gerçekten düşünmeden ve hayıflanmadan edemiyor. Aslında herkes kendi 'vicdan' evinin önünü süpürse, birçok şey güzellikle hâllolurdu. İnşallah öyle de olur.

This book of heart giving contentment drives the aspiring reader into the paths through which one can have desire or at least curiosity to true observation and, say, ecstasy. Now that we are speaking of Sufism and Rumi who is a world-renowned Muslim and Sufi master, his private life and Islamic teachings are open and generally exposed to diversions and variations. Friedlander has several arguments for this misunderstanding and the overarching Western "new-age" interpretations of Rumi's awareness of Unity.

He also offers not only knowing the verses Mevlana "had sung" but also living them by heart in daily routine if one professes awareness of Mevlana’s notions as a Sufi master, as a Hanafi scholar, as a companion, as a father. As a lover. There is a large section on Shems-i Tabriz's disappearance inducing several arguments on whether he was assassinated or not. Shems Friedlander uses many sources -both primary and secondary- to form a healthy basis and then he builds his theses on them, either concurrent or not.

His use of language is so much coherent that a non-native English speaker, especially into Sufism and Sufi nomensclature can easily have a grasp of the subject matter. Besides this, one can observe how English gently consorts the terminology.

I observe the "disclaimer alert" on Goodreads at times. True, I have a special love for the writer but I assume I am an objective reader to his "metamorphosis" story, the language usage and tone merging his profound knowledge with love, music, his former experiences and a special interest on Turkish sufi texts as much as the overseas practices.

Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi's Forgotten Message suggests editing our own actions through purifying our "ruh"s (spirits) by recalling the message that was sent eight hundred years ago.
