I bought this thinking I would be driving around Normandy on my own, in which case it would have been extremely helpful. We decided to go with a tour guide instead (which I would recommend to get more out of your trip - at least your first time), but still thought the book was interesting and well-done.

CARRY ONLY THIS ONE BOOK!
Compelled to visit WWII’s decisive battleground of June 6, 1944 on the beaches of Normandy? – This is the only history-rich and battle-documentary guidebook I’ve read that brings that horrific time of loss and victory into an organized and captivating telling. Once you get past the stunning cover of the GIs of the 29th Infantry Division making their assault on Omaha Beach heartbreakingly rendered into an iron sculpture, “Ever Forward”, the authors put you on the road to discover and memorialize these brave men.
They went by names like Shifty, Slim Jim, Chief, Wagger, Lightning Joe and Dutch – you’d imagine them in a poker table tableau out of a Jack London novel – but these men by water and air took out the formidable enemy. Their blood, bravery and persistence won freedom, not only for our allies, but preserved ours. For all the information, it is a compact, light book to throw into your pack or pouch and like all their other books, fluid reading.
I thank the authors for including the quote from combatant Lt. Richard Winters of Easy Company who later on reflection stated – “Wars do not make men great, but they do bring out the greatness in good men.” If there’s anything positive out of conflict, it is this insight.

Review of the 80th anniversary edition. A comprehensive resource for any trip to the Normandy battlefields. Having the what3words address should get you to exactly where the authors want you to go and see history. I cannot wait to visit a number of the places mentioned when I visit in 2026. The addition of films to watch and other books to read to enhance the Normandy experience is also very helpful.

Excellent collection of significant information regarding D-Day, WWII, historic sites, monuments, museums, beaches and the relationship of American, Canadian, British and German troops battling for control in this landmark location known as the D-Day Beaches of Normandy.
