This is the third book in the series, it could be read on its own. We’ve met both Gabriel & Elizabeth in earlier books as he is best friends with Jeffrey Worthington & she’s a close friend of Phoebe Winters. The author has once again written a book that I found hard to put down & I read it in under a day. A very strong heroine & a hero who is very much a Duke! Plus they also have a past. I loved the verbal sparring between Gabriel & Elizabeth & the sexual tension that sizzled between them. I also loved the premise of a woman being the senior partner in a large successful bank. Throw in a slimy villain & I was one very happy reader. I was drawn in the from start & loved this entertaining read

Elizabeth Moreland inherits her grandfather's senior partnership in his bank. Gabriel Lockridge, the Duke of Clarence is bored. When he learns of Elizabeth's role in the bank, he decides to take a more active part as a partner. Five years ago he made a mistake. Elizabeth has yet to forgive him. The attraction is still there, but it's more than it was before. A second chance goes through a lot of turmoil and distrust until they both realize nothing matters but love. A steamy romance.

DNF'd around the 30% mark. This author used to be a go-to for me, and although I stopped reading her based on objectionable messages in a recent book, this was written a few years ago and I thought it might be decent, since the women in this series are supposed to be strong, breaking Society's mold. MFC Elizabeth isn't super engaging, a bit stiff and sanctimonious, but under a lot of pressure as she has inherited her grandfather's bank, so OK. The MMC, a duke of course, is supposed to be witty and smart but comes across as annoying, bored and concerned about the perfection of his hair, constantly questioning MFC about her fitness to take over the bank. He pretends to go along with her weasel of a cousin to "help" her, but seem to do little that's helpful, except be handsome and tempt her into kissing him.

Even better, he'd once been engaged to MFC and she caught him cheating. He needed to grovel plenty, considering there was no confusion, the woman she'd caught him with hadn't thrown herself at him or set him up, he'd just been young and randy. But at the beginning of Chapter 13, there's this little nugget: "Elizabeth felt he had wronged her, and though he agreed with her now, he knew that many would argue the fact. A woman, they would say, should be aware that such was the result of entering into a relationship with a man like himself. Many women--most actually--would have little to no expectation that she would remain his only woman. In fact, most would expect a man like him to take other lovers." So, because he's a rich duke, the Ton expects him to sleep around, and MFC shouldn't scold too much?? Ugh. This isn't really true to the time period anyway. Once you were engaged in those days, even if a duke, sleeping around was not condoned. It was only once you had your heir and spare that Society turned a blind eye regarding discreet affairs. In fact, what he'd done could have ruined MFC, especially if their engagement was formal. Then MMC continues: "And yet...he had known what type of woman Elizabeth was, and, at the very least, he should not have been so entirely obvious in his trysts with others." OK, so because Elizabeth was a "good girl" she deserved more discretion when he slept around??

I don't know when this author became hung up on creating characters who convey toxic ideas about women and relationships. Maybe this guy's going to have a huge character arc, but he's not interesting enough to keep me reading.

London, 1815 A story of the power that is usually not bestowed upon a woman in these times, comes to Lady Elizabeth Moreland when her beloved grandfather passes away. He leaves her his senior partnership in the bank Clarke & Co! Wow, this really did not make her family happy, the greedy lot, but she was overjoyed. She had spent so much time at the bank learning much with her grandfather and she loved the challange.
Gabriel Lockridge, Duke of Clarence was bored. Yes, the aristocrat with too much money and really doing nothing in life except what he wants. When he hears about her inheritance he becomes intrigued as these two had a past and it was not good on his part.
But as often the case, a disgruntled relative was furious to be left out of the will so he enlists Gabriel's help to shatter Elizabeth's reputation.
So what will happen? A delightful story that will take you on a journey with the vivid words of Ellis St. Clair and whose characters come alive as the story unfolds! Truly enjoyed this book!

Lady Elizabeth Moreland spends most of her time with her grandfather at the bank he runs. She has always enjoyed learning everything about it from him. Since she backed out of a possible marriage years before she has worked to be independent. She will soon find out just how strong and capeable she is.
Gabriel Lockridge, the Duke of Clarence can and does do anything he likes. Unfortunately it gets boring so he likes to "help" where he thinks it's needed. His past behaviour with one of his partners in the bank could cause unexpected consequences.
A fun story with a marvellously strong minded heroine. With a family like hers who can blame her when she has trust issues.
Our hero is just a little too full of himself and not used to being told no.
This is part of a series of books that can each be read alone. They are all very entertaining.
Great fun.

Great

I found this a really good book. Elizabeth is an amazing character. She is extremely smart. She decides to follow her grandfather's final wishes and does the job to the best of her abilities. Gabriel is also a good character and is the perfect partner in business and life in general.

A second chance

Gabriel was young with his first engagement to Elizabeth and afraid! Fear made him cheapen it, break her heart with cheating! Elizabeth already reserved continued to be tutored by her grandfather! Tutoring turned to trust as he left her in charge and in close proximity to Gabriel! The two are still very drawn to each other and slowly began to trust again! Vicious rumors and lies circulated to discredit not only the bank and Elizabeth! Could Gabriel be a part of the plot and would he break her heart again? My favorite in this series! A must read!!!

This amazing story lets us see how very hard it was for women in 1815 in London. The world was run by men and women were to do as told mostly. They were good for children, bring wealth and title to a gentleman down on his luck or after he had lost all gambling or his father had. If lucky they might find a man, they actually loved but mostly their husbands were picked for them ! Yikes, we are so lucky.
Elizabeth Moreland was luckier them most, she was the daughter of a Viscount. She was seen by the ton as a perfect Lady. But secretly she loved the time she spent with her beloved Grandfather, Thomas at his bank, Clarke & Co. He had taken a small bank and built it into the largest bank in London. She is the only one in the family who loves the financial work. She doesn't really enjoy the ton events which her mother makes her go to. Reading, learning the ledgers and all Thomas can teach her is her true love.
Then everything in her life changes, her beloved Grandfather dies, and in the reading of the will he leaves her everything including the Senior Partnership of the bank !
Gabriel Lockridge, Duke of Clarence, one of the wealthiest men in England we met in Book 2, "Lady of Fortune". Gabriel and Elizabeth have a history that is not a good one. Many years ago, the meet and become engaged. Then Elizabeth called it off suddenly and they haven't spoken since.
Gabriel is bored even with all his estates. His best friends have married and now are busy with their life's. Then he gets a unexpected visit from Elizabeth's cousin Henry asking for his help to destroy her.
He agrees only to be able to get close to her. Now the story gets really intriguing . Elizabeth is entering a man's world with many against the idea. Knowing her cousin is going to cause trouble. She is suspicious when Gabriel starts showing up whenever she needs him ? Can she trust him? Deciding to find out what's he is up to she keeps him close to watch him. Unfortunately, their past is not as over as they thought and old secrets and feeling come to light.
Wow, so much going on in this story you just can't put it down. Lies, secrets, underhanded evil man
and lots of misunderstanding between two rather nice people. What will happen to the bank, will
our couple be able to find happiness ? Do the nasty fellows get what they should ?
Guess you will have to start ready and find out. This is a somewhat steamy story for those who like to know. I have read all the stories in this series so far and it is hard to say which is the best, they are all so good.
I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

So there are a few authors I read that I call my “go to” authors. Ellie St. Clair is one of those authors. I have read all my "regular read" authors new releases and looking for more to read until the next group of new releases come out. Nothing against not calling her one of my “regular authors” because I really enjoy her books and always get a good read. I just picked up her books way later than some of the other authors I read. I like to know I have some good authors to fall back on and also I can actually read a whole series back to back and not have to wait in-between each new release within the series.

I read one of her books in 2017 and then two in 2018 but didn't really pick up again until May, 2022. This is the 3rd book in this series. This is now my 24th book by her.

I have been waiting for this story. I was so excited to read what went on with these two. As soon as Elizabeth mentioned in book 2 that “something but nothing” happened between them, I was excited to read what it was.

I loved Elizabeth and Gabriel's story. It was so good and did not disappoint. I loved their personalities and their story. There was such great depth of characters and so well written. Just an overall great read.

A heart's tale of every working woman

When proving yourself in a man's world becomes your motto, when stress builds up and consumes you without even letting you realise that, when incessant questions on your ability brings blades of self-doubt to your own self - you feel as if you will crumble, but then again, you find your strength, your will, your confidence and you stand high...this is so real for every working woman and this has been so accurately expressed in this book! I could not put it down until I finished it!!
This story is also a tale that tells you that people change, and that change is has power of infinity! I was initially so much against Gabriel - he was in the worst category of rogues, but he did change...and his actions in this book are really what we all want in the man of our choice, specially working women!
The story is gripping, thoroughly emotional, very well written. I would recommend it with a ten star!

Lady Elizabeth Moreland beloved grandfather passes away and he leaves her his senior partnership in the bank. Elizabeth is seen as the perfect lady, except she yearns for the opportunity to work in a world of which she is enamored banking, her family’s business. Gabriel Lockridge, the Duke of Clarence is intrigued by the latest change of fortunes for Lady Elizabeth Moreland, a woman he wronged many years ago.
Her cousin Henry is out to destroy her reputation and her new-found position. Henry requests Gabriel’s help and he agrees, but Gabriel has his own agenda. I love this story of two strongly independent people who have a past, their witting banter and as sexual tensions run high in this story of a woman entering into a man’s world of banking and the one man from her past who wronged her. A great story!!! I have voluntarily read and review this book.

Second chance at love! Drawn together in their youth Lady Elizabeth and Gabriel were once engaged but the bethroal ended in her broken heart. Fast forward five years they meet again. All the attraction is still there. Like other heroines in this series Elizabeth is strong, self sufficient, the perfect lady. Interested in banking like her grandfather he wills her the senior partnership in the family bank. Much to her cousins frustration! While Gabriel has grown into impeccable duke. He looks out for his friends often meddling in their lives to insure their happiness. He now has eyes only for Elizabeth. He realizes she is strong enough to stand on her own with grace and resolve. See how this beautiful story unfolds. I love the epilogue!
I was provided an advanced reader copy of this book.

Elizabeth has always been her Grandfather’s shadow, which has led to her learning his trade, as a banker. With his death, she is given the senior partnership of CLarke & Co. This is not agreeable to her family, especially her cousin, Henry.
Henry approaches another partner of the bank, Gabriel Lockridge, to ask for his assistance in voting Elizabeth out and Henry into that prestigious position. Gabriel agrees, but only to get rid of him, not realizing that Henry would proceed on his word alone.
Through many lies and issues, Elizabeth shows that she is more than worthy of what has been given to her and earns Gabriel’s respect and eventually his love.

The Duke of Clarence, Gabriel Lockridge, has it all - title, properties, money, good looks & approval from the Ton. But, even with all of that, he is bored - he has trusted stewards overseeing his properties, a solicitor to manage his finances & he tends to help friends where he thinks it is needed.

Lady Elizabeth Moreland grew up spending most of her time with her grandfather at his bank he runs & has learned everything about the banking business from him. Five years ago Elizabeth was betrothed to one of the partners at the bank, Gabriel Lockridge, but she broke the engagement & even though she is heartbroken she must be the strong & press forward showing no emotion. Her grandfather suddenly dies & leaves the senior position at the bank to her along with his entire estate after his wife passes on.

Gabriel & Elizabeth were a great couple but they were too young the first time they were infatuated with one another - this second chance will prove to be hard for him to convince her he can be trusted & for her to let go of the past.

I love unconventional Elizabeth & how, against all odds, she made her way in business with men. Gabriel was pretty much stuck on himself but I loved his character & Elizabeth did manage to knock him down a peg or two.

A second chance for them both.
What I liked in this book in fact the whole series is how the heroines are written. Elizabeth like the others are strong willed, determine, gifted, and intelligent. The heroes are charming, strong, and a bit thick at times, but are just right for the ladies but what I really liked is that they are realistic with all the human flaws we all have. The work is brilliantly written and well worth reading. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Can Ellie and Gabriel overcome their difficult past to find love?

Five years ago Gabriel Lockridge (Duke of Clarence) betrayed Elizabeth Moreland’s trust.

Now he is trying to help her run the bank her beloved grandfather left her in control of, or is he?

Elizabeth is finding it hard to trust Gabriel given their past history.

There are others who do not like the fact she has been bequeathed the senior partnership in the family bank.

The two of them must overcome their lack of trust to work together to make sure the future of the bank and their relationship.

Lady Elizabeth Moreland smart, kind and way ahead of her time is her Grandfather's favorite who has taught her all about his banking business. When Thomas Clark passes he leaves the bulk of his estate to her along with his shares in the bank, his family is stunned and his grandson plans to take his place which means he will have to undercut Elizabeth. Henry Clarke makes a miscalculation involving Gabriel Lockridge, the Duke of Clarence.... Loved everything about this book

This is another wonderful story in this series. Elizabeth is strong willed and fervent about her beliefs. She inherits a bank which places her in the crosshairs of several people. Gabriel is a Duke who is bored with the way his life going. These two have a past relationship that did not end well. Together they spark as they clash. The author does a great job with the plot and the characters. This is a spirited story. It is wonderful to watch two strong characters become vulnerable and fall in love.

The banker

Great story, great characters, a different type of story line. But good non the less. Elizabeth
Was a beautiful young lady with a mind of her own. She spent a lot of time with her grandfather the banker, and learned all he was teaching and telling her about the banking business. When he passed he left it all to Elizabeth. But he also made partner Elizabeth one time love. Can the lady banker and the bored Duke find love a second time?
Thank you ❤️

Not clean

The premise drew me in and while I checked the reviews at the time of purchase, there was no indication at the time that this was not a clean read. There are two counts of blasphemy, one (that I recall) of swearing and several intimate scenes. I don't enjoy having to skim parts of a story because of this. The story could have stood on it's own as it was good, Nice ending. But I won't be rushing for this authors books in future as I prefer clean reads...

Elizabeth and Gabriel had an ill-fated love when they were younger. Now, she has inherited the Senior Partnership of her grandfather's bank. The other partners are not happy with a female partner, and her cousin is doing his best to add to the discontent. But then, Gabriel, now a Duke, is back, and adding to her confusion. Why is he pursuing her? I received an ARC of this book.

This is my favorite book in this series so far. The dynamic between Elizabeth and Gabriel had been building since the first time they were mentioned in a previous book, and it was so strong that I could feel exactly what they were feeling. It was also well-written in the sense of what had happened in the past and how they managed to overcome it.

I loved this story, especially how the characters were written within it and how I didn't want to put it down. As I read this, I felt many emotions for the various characters; cheering for the strong Lady Elizabeth, hoping the Duke of Clarence Gabriel will be that better person and feeling the frustration of her cousin who is trying to ruin her reputation.
I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review.
