The author of Deadly Wands and the asteroid-impact novel Regolith, Mr. Reilly has a Master's degree in Counseling, an autistic son, speaks Spanish, and builds oceanfront Caribbean condos.
The story seemed a confused mix of historical fact and total fiction. For example ending with Geronimo being tortured slowly on a remote island, which is not true. However, some of the incidents seem to be based around factual events, including names of Apaches and military involved.
The story seems very much two-speed. At times it goes into detail about family manipulation of circumstances surrounding events. At other times I seems to do not a lot more than state facts or abbreviate the fiction.
I did enjoy the main characters not being heroes but being as evil as everybody else (e.g. how they used Apaches to kill Mexicans and Americans in competition with them for land).
I give Mr. Reilly high marks for a lengthy, and very detailed adaptation of our Old West. Some of the characters had depth, like Apache Jack; but others did not. There was a tad bit of repetition in the telling; but isn’t that what Life is about, repetition. I felt the scene settings could have been brought to life better; but overall they were acceptable. Some good history mixed with fiction.
