Wilson Carlyle is an omega in need of an alpha. Not just any alpha, but one with a special set of skills. Wil needs a killer.
A year ago, his parents were murdered by his cousin Dominic, who is in debt and in trouble. Expecting an inheritance that didn't come, Dominic is now after Wil and his company, and he will do anything to get them.
Protection from Dominic isn't enough for Wil, he wants revenge, which is why he needs an alpha mate to stage a legal murder in self-defence. To make absolutely sure, he spends a quarter of a million dollars on Jack, a feral alpha from an illegal alpha-fighting ring. With blood already on his hands, Wil is promised Jack is exactly what he needs. He doesn't care about the personal cost of mating an alpha like that as long as he gets what he wants: Dominic's head on a plate. After that, Jack is free to go with enough money to make all his dreams come true. That's the plan, anyway.
But what happens when Jack turns out to be a good guy, who loves his mother and wants to love his omega? When he's upset to discover their mating isn't what he thought it was? When he isn't happy being asked to kill one last time, and Wil realises he might have miscalculated?
Note: This book is set in world different from ours, one in which male omegas can get pregnant. That said, Wil and Jack responsibly practice safe sex, so male pregnancy does not feature in their story, though the biology of it is discussed.
When I noticed that one of my favorite m/f sci fi authors wrote an m/m, I had to jump all over it!! As expected, I loved the writing, the world building and the characters.
In this story, omegas get to choose their alphas. Alphas are kept institutionalized when they reach a certain age, because without an omega to mate with, they produce too much betadrenaline, which makes them go feral. Omegas, on the other hand, don’t produce enough and need to choose an alpha or their body starts to fail. Once the omega chooses an alpha, during the heating cycle and the mating the omega will absorb the betadrenaline from his alpha. The omega gets what is needed to be and stay healthy and the alpha releases the excess to be and remain lucid.
Omega Wil sets out to find an alpha who will kill for him. He finds a feral alpha he believes will be perfect. Unfortunately, once mated and now lucid, Jack (the alpha), turns out to be a sweet guy with no interest in killing. And so, the arguments and disagreements on the killing subject began and went on and on and on… I got tired it. This goes on for a good part of the story and the reason behind my rating. I don't mind angst, but I found this relationship angst boring, repetitive and longwinded.
The best parts of the story that I enjoyed were the alpha and omega instincts that Jack and Wil couldn’t fight against. Those moments in their relationship were endearing and at times funny.
I’m really looking forward to the next book.
Warning to some of my GR friends who are not down for this: this world includes Mpreg and Mcycling?? (lol..yeah I just made that word up) omegas have periods…yikes!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
i LOVED this omegaverse book! there was an actual, in-depth explanation of alpha/beta/omega biology instead of just "well these males have wombs i guess lmao", like so many others, so i really appreciated that. i also liked the slight role-reversal of alphas being bought by omegas - although i still have a lot of questions about how that whole system works, and would love to see that explored in the next books.... whenever they come out (hint hint, Lancaster!)
The first three chapters were done really well. I was captivated reading those. You could just feel the tension and danger surrounding these characters. After that, my mind was zoning in and out. A part of me was interested in the whole the story but a bigger part of me wished I picked something a much more powerful read. The romance between Jack and Wil was actually good and I would probably have given this a solid 4 solely for that. However, the revenge scheme was literally downside in this. It felt light and just anticlimactic.
Aaaandddd it took me quite a while to finish this because I was so damn busy helping my little nephew with this homeworks and projects!
3,5 stars with an added bonus star for a/b/o with NO MPREG woohoo!!!
This is absolutely worth your time if you are into this trope even a little bit. The Romance delivers, the smut is hot and while the plot is pretty by the numbers it is absolutely entertaining.
I've said it once and I'll gladly say it again: a/b/o is the single greatest thing my fandom ever invented. It is such an incredibly versatile and sexy trope with endless possiblities. Too bad that the specifics of the trope are the one thing V.C. Lancaster didn't really manage to convince me and that's why I took some stars off the rating. Sometimes it's better to not try to reinvent the wheel and this is the perfect example. The a/b/o traits here are based on a somewhat simplistic hormonal imbalance - I recommend absolutely forgetting any scientific knowledge about biology and also suspension of all disbelief :) Once that's done it's a fun romp with a predictable but competently realized romantic storyline.
Where Omega's are often used as stand-ins for a somehow suppressed minority and victims of their biology this time around Alpha's are definitely the ones who are worse off. Sometime after puberty they end up turning into feral beasts who only turn back into useful members of society when mated by an Omega. I appreciate the way the power lies with the Omega in this society.
Lancaster does spend some time fleshing out the dynamics this leads to in Alpha/Omega relationships but also immediately negates all that interesting progress with the premise of the story. An Omega who gets an Alpha with the express purpose of needing a willing killer? The flaw in that plan is obvious pretty much immediately because the world-building is clear on that: An Alpha stops being feral after a mating. There's no reason to expect him to be a violent killer OR even willing to commit murder after he 'wakes up'.
Wil and Jack's entire relationship is overshadowed by this conflict and the outcome is telegraphed pretty strongly. I didn't care because I actually enjoyed the journed to the happy ending and could have spent more time with them and Max.
I would be interested in more stories in this verse even if I wish that the author had not built her Omegas quite as close to the female anatomy as she has. I read M/M precisely because I am not interested in things like periods, pregancies and birth control...
After his parents are killed, Omega Wilson Carlyle picks up the reigns of his family's business to keep it going though without an Alpha mate his clients have concerns over his ability to keep it afloat.
Wil's Beta cousin Dominic is proposing a mating between the two in more a business marriage of convenience sort of thing to keep the shareholders appeased and settle the growing concerns. The problem is Dominic is the very person who is circulating the rumor and responsible for the death of his parents.
In a last ditch effort to thwart his cousin and with an eye to the future, Wil goes to a site where out of control volatile Alphas are safely contained and caged for the protection of the general population. What the public doesn't know is the site is notorious for illegal cage fights between the Alphas for the entertainment of a paying crowd that expects bloodshed and death.
Wil decides on Killer, an Alpha who has the highest kill numbers in his fights and on the verge of turning feral.

To start, this story does not include paranormal shapeshifter characters. The setting and world building takes place in a CONTEMPORARY alternate reality Omegaverse world. While characters take on the characteristics of animal kingdom mentality, practices, and behaviors, they don't shift.
New author/new series that intrigued me with the story blurb. While it does have dark themed content in certain scenes, I don't consider the overall story falls under this tag.
Wil & Killer. The chemistry was there for these two characters for sure. As a fan of man on man action I enjoyed the Alpha/Omega dynamics between the two though I had some degree of reservation that Killer didn't live up to my expectations for overall personality in a similar manner that I expected Prime Rib but got Rib Eye, both good cuts of meat but different.
Secondary characters. All added to the world building and provided depth to the story but for the majority the characters were pertinent to the scenes they were in with little other value outside that.
My issues. While I enjoyed the overall story and journey to Wil & Killer's HEA, I wasn't on board with the foundation of the story. I kept questioning the current story line based on the back story situation. Not a deal breaker but I do look for reasonable rational reality even in my fictional world reading.
I did appreciate and enjoy the overall story and recommend fans of m/m Omegaverse erotic romance check it out.
One of the best aspects of the A/B/O world is that that world gets to be pretty much be whatever the Author wants it to be and I really liked the "world" created in this story. It was a new and interesting take.
It just didn't feel consistent.
I loved when Jack was all growly and full on Alpha and I think he pretty much stayed true to his Alpha self but Wil, well, Wil was at times a typical Omega but at others times, well, not.
He was also not a very compassionate person and because of that, not a very good mate and he never really changed.
The times they were together and being mates, getting to know each other and falling in love were really great times. The A/O dynamic was there and done well. They were hot and sweet and even funny. But the times Wil was just focused on revenge changed him and changed him more than I believe he could change after his mating. So yeah, it wasn't consistent A/O behavior and kinda pulled me out of the story but more so, pissed me off. I didn't like Wil all that much.
Real quick I'll bring up the bad guy. He was a bad guy but I don't feel like he got enough page time for us to really get a true belief of that, and I for sure don't think that Jack got enough time to make this decision. For the entire book to revolve around this guy I just never got a good feel for him.
Overall I feel it was a good story and I am not sorry I read it. I'm curious to see what is to come in this world.
Not going to lie..... I did not enjoy this as much as I thought. I was initially very excited because I loved this authors Ruth and Gron, mf series, so when I saw they did an MM I instantly moved it to the top my read next list. Unfortunately it just didn’t hit the spot for me.
Now the writing and the world building here were wonderful. We get a somewhat unique twist on an ABO plot line. Alphas become feral after their 18th birthday until they are mated, so this pretty much leaves them vulnerable and dependent on good omegas. As always people with money are able to plan ahead but alphas from poorer family seem to end up miserable condition, hence our alpha coming from a fighting ring.
Anywho obviously I enjoyed the world building and writing but what I hated in this book was the plot, and our omega, Wil. I did not like Wil’s self serving attitude and view of things. The whole story he tried to not be the “spoiled rich kid” but unfortunately that’s all he conveyed to me. He bought an alpha to serve his purpose, when the alpha turned out to be a decent human being he gave him an ultimatum. And then he pushed and he pushed until he ended up getting what he wanted. And even with all the sweet stuff in between I just couldn’t make it work in my favor. I already hated Wil and imo he didn’t redeem himself. An omega needing to redeem himself... can you imagine??
Will I read the next one??? For sure!

I am so exited this author wrote an MM. I really enjoyed their Ruth and Gron series
Hmm... this was a rather different take on A/B/O romance. I liked Jack and Wil but I could have done without the homicidal plans. Although that’s ironic considering that’s the entire premise of the book and on the title even! Lol...
It was enjoyable and hooked me enough to read the whole thing in one sitting. I just really found the murder planning a bit off putting, not that I’ve never read books with assassins as the MCs. I don’t know why it just sat badly with me this time.
It was still a good read though... can’t wait to see how the series unfolds
57% DNF. I love VC Lancaster's writing, but I can't get into the whole omega/alpha insta-attraction heat relationship thing. I want couples to fall for each other because of true emotions not because of lustful hormones. So I'm out.
Very unique in a good way! Never have read in this line of stories and took this risk because I just trust C.L is a great author and will pull it. And man she did! I enjoyed this book. Can’t wait for the next one!
This was such an unusual book. But I absolutely adored both of these men. And I loved that Jack was different what Wil had thought he would be… a much kinder, gentler soul.
This is definitely a very smutty book so be warned. A lot of this story happens “in bed”.
Wil has been terrorized by his cousin and has thought and planned how to kill him so he can have his life back. This is a complicated book in terms of morality and what is right. The debate over killing is not ever fully fleshed out.
It’s a fantasy world where men can have periods and be pregnant.
There’s a hint in the epilogues that there will be kinda in their future and that they are doing some important work.
MM romances set in an A/B/O verse are not my usual fare, but I'm a fan of the author's Office Aliens series so I decided to give this one a go. There's nothing wrong with this book, and I think V.C. Lancaster has managed to put an interesting spin on some traditional A/B/O world building elements, but I wasn't particularly interested in this subgenre to begin with and nothing about this story changed my mind.
3 starts for the writing but ZERO stars for Wil, I absolutely detest him as a MC. I’m sure he’s supposed to grow through the book and maybe he will but he’s an absolute moron with his bullshit excuses of why he HAS TO have his cousin killed. Like... Really this guy is so smart the only option he comes up with for offing someone is get ABO mated and have an alpha rage kill the guy? The guy is a moron and beyond spoiled to boot. He made it o to my weak stupid or horrible heroine shelf where this book will RIP.
Also I was bored
The sex wasn’t even what I signed up for. Why is this an ABO universe without knotting? GTFO of here book.
I was thrilled to see this writer wrote a MM book because I love her other books! Her world building is so good. There are not a lot of ABO/mpreg books I like because usually the stories are too predictable for my taste. With this world building it gave me enough twists to keep it interesting. It took me a while to warm up to Wil, which was a shame because everything was from his POV. I would have loved Jack’s POV as well. He was such a sweetheart. And OMG they were hot together!! 🔥🔥🔥
Can I just say that I loved (X17) this book. It was just perfect. This is my first time reading this author and I loved every part of it. And I loved Jack's character. The idea behind the story and the way the plot carried through was brillant. One chapter in and I was a bit skeptical, but damn things took a big turn ( all kinds of good though). I simply adored the two. And I do wish Marshall gets his own book too. Simply a great read. Cant wait for book 2.
Great! Very impressed by the world building in this one. Wil and Jack start out at odds but they fall for each other quickly and have to figure out how to solve the tension of Wil wanting Jack to kill someone for him....
that explains what the Omegaverse is and also has some drama. Now, that video is hardly an advert for anything Omegaverse, so it’s important to stress that this is a professionally written novel. Neither is it fan-fiction with the serial numbers filed off. However, the story follows Wil. His parents have been murdered and he has now taken over his father’s business and lives in a mansion with his butler. So Wil is Bruce Wayne; Jack, Batman; Max, Alfred and Dominic, Joe Chill. But these are just loose correspondences and I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t been looking out for it. Just clever references for readers with their eyes open.
Wil is externally a man, but has a womb up his bum. I’ll repeat that: this is a novel about a man with a womb up his bum. Obviously, genderqueer interpretations are available at this point, and are no doubt encouraged, but I think it’s telling that the novel is from his point of view. There are women in the book, all non-essential characters, but it is essentially a man-only world. Wil strikes me as metaphorically a woman and I suspect he functions as the entry-point for what is mostly a female readership. I found this method quite invasive, like the genre’s creators were inserting themselves into my body and taking it over. Reading it, I was constantly on edge and hyper-aware of my own gender. Metaphorically, I have been pegged by V.C. Lancaster. The world is hostile to man and I get the feeling that the novel is a safe space for women and an unsafe space for men. The male omegas suffer the indignity of having female bodily functions thrust upon them. The alphas go feral if they don’t get laid, are mentally incapacitated and institutionalised or sold into slavery. When they do have sex they regain their humanity. I should imagine there’s something of a women’s fantasy in there, that they’re so good in bed they can change a man, but there’s rather an offensive inference in this. The alphas pump a couple of times, cum, and don’t just take a long time to recover, but are NEVER THE SAME AGAIN. I don’t know what to say. We’re not like that in real life at all and I resent the implication.
This is all great stuff. I really enjoyed reading it and look forwards to the sequel. One thing I found particularly convincing was Wil’s psychology. He wants to kill Dominic as revenge for the murder of his parents. The plan he adopts to achieve this is totally ridiculous: buying an alpha mate to kill for him. So the mate will be either feral, with an urge to kill that cannot be directed, or mated and tamed with mental capacity but no urge. Obviously, Wil would be better off using a beta with a gun, and we know who that is when we’re introduced to Max on page one and he’s actually carrying Ibsen’s gun. In setting Jack to the task, Wil appears to be testing him at some primal level and is also attempting to replace the family he has lost: motivations he is entirely unaware of on a conscious level.
This shifter world view is mostly dark and painful, and not a pleasant visit at all. I was mildly intrigued by Jack and mostly annoyed or repulsed by Will. And Max? He was just “there.” Lots of over-written sex scenes; fantasy sex, mostly.
Alpha beta omega genre is definitely not a favorite but I wanted to read this because I liked the author. Sadly while I liked the relationship between characters and I liked how the author set up the abo world I didn’t like this all very much. Best thing about this book are Jack and Max.
I wanted to like it, I really did. However, I had difficulty getting into it and Wilson's plan to turn some unsuspecting Alpha into a murderer didn't sit right with me. Wilson ties Jack to him, as an act of self preservation. Jack turns out to be a decent guy who loves his family and is happy to have been chosen by an Omega, to have been saved from the mindless craze he has existed in for the last several years. Wilson comes to regret forcing Jack into possibly committing premeditated murder, but even if Jack wanted to leave, he can't. Genetics have tied them together and there could never be another for him.
It's sort of ironic, considering some of the things I've read have been much worse. Unfortunately something about this book unsettled me where the others didn't. Most people like this book, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
i think the concept of the story and what it could’ve been was much better than the actually story but it wasn’t bad at the same time. i think i was just disappointed bc i knew it could be better……still it was good and it kept me entertained right up to the very end…..also i’m OBSESSED with jack being a romantic at heart & dreaming of being in love which is the complete and total opposite of what wil saw in killer….love love love…..would most likely read the next book in the series if it ever comes out
So I'm pretty sure this was the first omegaverse book for this author. She is very talented when it comes to creating different worlds and characters, so I was quite intrigued. It is NOT like most of the other books in this trope. Basically,.The Omega is the Alpha, but then not. It was well written of course, I kinda hated Wil through most of it. I felt so sad for Jack. Still do.
The premise seems kind of bonkers but the author does a decent job of explaining it, and the ending works well. But mostly the story is about them getting to know each other, which is incredibly sweet and lovely. The worldbuilding is unique and interesting too. Very sad there were no sequels in this universe.
So this was not at all what I was expecting and I loved it! I really enjoyed the fact that the whole alpha/omega take was completely different! I also loved Wil and Jack, they were so perfect for each other. So I’m highly recommending this one!
