I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
This was an sweet and gentle romance. Will, who was now a duke, had returned from the war a shattered man. His injuries to his face affected his confidence and his moods. Luckily his aunt came to stay with him. Augusta, had a dreadful life with her father and had taken things into her own hands. Their romance was a very gradual realisation of how they felt about each other. This was helped along by Aunt Jane! Of course, Augusta is a commoner, there is her father to contend with and Will’s problem in meeting people. This was an enjoyable read.
SORRY. WHILE I LIKE THE WHOLE IDEA OF THE STORY...THE PLOT AND CHEMISTRY ITSELF FELL FLAT. The hero seems to be wallowing in his own self pity yet not and there was nothing sensual or no sexual awareness at least of each other between the characters. Forget that it was a clean romance, the story itself nearly put me to sleep.
A wounded and scarred hero, makes it back home, but nothing will ever be the same. Now having inherited the title of Duke of Ravenswood, Will had to face the breaking off of his engagement and his limitatons. After all, he was no longer the handsome man he was and did not have his full eyesight back. He has no desire to go out into society but he does have his wonderful Aunt Jane for company. But fate was going to step in as he and his aunt were taking one of their nightly walks and came upon an injured woman. She has been badly beaten it appears and is so thin that he decides to take her back to the estate to take care of her. But when she finally wakes up she will not tell them her name. He name is Augusta who had escaped her violent father that almost killed her. This is such a heartfelt story. The wounded hero and the mistreated heroine. They both needed healing of the body and spirit. Could they possibly help each other? Such a wonderful story that will make you believe that there is always a second chance at life and love..
I enjoyed this story. It was a clean (or behind-closed-doors) historical romance with a damaged hero. It was a 4 star for me, but I dropped it down 1 star because I skim read a lot. I did feel there were just too many repetitive thoughts to read. Those thoughts just went too far deep and I didn't miss out by skipping them.
This book didn't grab me like I hoped it would. I do love my scarred heroes and Will was definitely that and lived as a recluse for the most part, but I was hoping for more angst, I guess. Will was a doctor (and a duke) and had some sort of explosive device detonate on the battlefield, leaving his face scarred and his vision impaired. He knew he was ghastly to look at and wandered into the village only at night, accompanied by his Aunt Jane. He didn't want to scare anyone nor did he want to see anyone, but he still had his duties to his people.
During one of their jaunts, they came upon a woman who had been beaten and had an injured ankle. Instinct took over for Will and he took her back to his manor to treat her and let her recover. He didn't know who she was and she refused to speak to him for days. Since she refused to give him her name, he called her Miss Brooke.
Augusta was an obstinate thing. She didn't want him to send her back to her abusive father and offered neither him nor his aunt any real information. Even though she didn't want him to send her back, she knew she couldn't stay there forever and she didn't milk him or abuse his generosity, which was a plus. However, I didn't think she was a very convincing character. It was said that she had some sort of accent. It wasn't developed at all. Somehow, her mother educated her; taught her to read and write. I'm all about that, but it just didn't seem all that feasible. Maybe. I don't know. It's fiction. Anything can happen in fiction, which is why I read it.
I didn't feel Will and Augusta falling in love. I didn't feel even the remotest of attraction between them, although I did appreciate that Augusta was not in the least bit put off by his scars. She saw way past that and saw him for who he was. I did like that. Their first kiss wasn't until almost the end of the book and the steam level was at zero.
I didn't hate this book. I just thought it was a bit dry and lacked any real grit.
This is a sweet, lovely romance. Augusta Copperweld and William Ainsworth, the Duke of Ravenwood are both rather broken. Augusta, ‘Gussie’, is the victim of an abusive drunk of a father while Will is a war hero with injuries that have greatly affected his appearance and life. Will is a third son, never wished for a dukedom, and lives a lonely existence with a widowed aunt his only regular company. Will and his aunt come upon Gussie in an unusual setting and see she needs assistance. They take this unknown girl to their home to help her and this is where the relationship begins. Will was a talented physician and has the ability to help her, but he needs his aunt to prod him into doing so. Augusta is reticent to share her identity for fear she’ll be sent home to her father, a hell she has no wish to ever revisit. These two people begin to discover each other, their interests, opinions, strengths, and an attraction grows between them from an ember to a flame. ( Along with a little help from a well meaning, match making aunt.). There are conflicts, and each is able to help the other solve them, bringing them closer together. This story is poignant and gentle, and I really enjoyed it. I recommend it, especially for those looking for something ‘sweet’ in the romance genre.
The Duke of Destiny series are 4 short novels each featuring a duke who was injured at the Battle of Salamanca in 1812 and upon returning home, had to adapt to changed lives. Each also addresses marriage between nobility and commoners.
The second in the quartet is the Duke of Sorrow, Will, whose face and vision is severely damaged by an explosion while tending the injured on the battlefield. This duke is a physician rather than a typical soldier. Will returns home and elects to seclude himself from all in his country estate, believing he to now be such a horror to behold, as to be monstrous. He only leave the manor for long walks late at night, and during one of these he stumbles upon a young woman lying by a stream, clearly the victim of physical abuse. Having no idea who she is and where she belongs, he brings her back to the manor to recover.
This is very much a Beauty and the Beast retelling, with the beauty, Augusta, refusing to disclose her identity as she fears being returned to her abusive father. Ultimately small but mighty Gussie brings Will back to the light and the living. This was a far better and more interesting story than the first in the series. You can't help but cheer on Will and Gussie as they find their way to justice and love. Loved Will's Aunt Jane and her story as well.
Lord William Ainsworth, Duke of Ravenswood is a younger son come into a dukedom he never expected or wanted to inherit. Will does returns home from the service as a doctor a wounded man after an explosion leaves his face disfigured and sight impaired. Will decides to stay for home and his Aunt Jane comes to comfort him. He’s rejected when his fiancé dumps him and he steadfastly refuse to go out into society, the locals feel sympathy for start to call him the “Duke of Sorrow”. One night Will and Jane are out walking on his estate when they stumble upon an injured young woman. He’s a healer at heart and decides to bring her back to his manor so that she can recover. Mystery woman, Augusta Copperweld has a fever and welts on her caused by someone hitting her with a crop. As she’s recovery she will not tell them her name or what happened. Her one thought was to run away from home before she is was killed, she doesn’t want anyone to know. A captivation story with mystery, sorrow and a lovely romance between two wounded souls who desire and deserve love and happiness. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
The second book in the Dukes of Destiny didn't fail to please. Poor William Ainsworth, Duke of Ravenwood, once a handsome young man was left horrifically scared on the battlefields of France, not only had he horrific injuries but his betrothed called off their engagement as soon as she saw him as she couldn't tolerate the sight of him. What a shallow person she turned out to be, but her decision hurt Will badly. He returned to his estate, appointed an estate manager who turned out to be a rogue and met a young lady who he found injured by a Brooke one night, and his life changed. Augusta Copperweld (my goodness what a name for a 'commoner') aka Miss Brooke as she was named as she wouldn't tell Will her name, wheedled her way into his heart, ably assisted by Will's aunt Jane. Augusta who was fleeing her abusive father. Finally with Will's support she confronted her father and Will confronted his fears, it all turned out splendidly, the epilogue was particularly sweet. A lovely, well written story, with a simple and charming plot, of love, strength and over coming fear, well worth a read. I would thoroughly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this story & the characters William Percy Ainsworth, Duke of Ravenwood & respected physician & Augusta "Gussie" Copperweld were both scarred inside & out. Will's face suffered an explosion when he was a physician during the war & his whole upper part of his face was scarred & his vision had mostly come back after losing is completely. He has returned to be a scarred recluse with bitter temperament & he wishes to have no guests or go anywhere to see other people.
Gussie had been beaten by her father many times with his fists or riding crop leaving scars on her arms & neck.
While on their nightly walk, Will & his Aunt Jane found Gussie unconscious, with welts on her arms & Will takes her back to his manor so he may treat her & ascertain if there are any more her injuries he could not see in the dark.
This is where their love story begins & it is emotional, funny, deceitful, romantic (just kisses), love & Aunt Jane adds so much wonderful tidbits to the story. I highly recommend this to all historical romance readers.
Can Augusta and Will save each other from their dark pasts?

Lord William Ainsworth, Duke of Ravenwood, never thought he would be his family’s heir. The youngest son was happy with is lot in life; as a Doctor and Military Physician in Spain. But the death of his father and brothers brought reality too him, then a bomb exploding as he was tending a wounded soldier, sealed his fate. Sent home a hero, with a disfigured face and poor eyesight, his fiancée breaks their engagement. Withdrawn from society and scared, Will opts for home and his Aunt Jane comes to comfort him. On a night walk, through the village, they find a young injured woman lying by the creek. His instincts as a Doctor take over and they take her back to the estate to recover. She will not tell them her name or what happened; and a mystery evolves. However, this mystery, gives Will and Jane something to untangle besides the sorrow he carries. What wonderful characters Whitney Blake has created in her latest work. This is a page turner and one to enjoy.
William Percy Ainsworth also known as the Duke of Ravenwood is a gentle kind soul who was not excited about becoming a Duke he has always wanted to be a doctor. He had no choice as he has lost all his family except his aunt. When he was called to war to help with the wounded he did his duty until he became the casualty and sent home. Will has been disfigured, his eyesight diminished and his betrothed has cancelled the engagement. Will never leaves his home during the day he prefers night time jaunts. One night he comes across a young lady who has been severely abused, he bundles her up and takes her home to see to her care. Augusta refuses to give Will her real name although she has a good heart she is fearful her father will find her and she does not fully trust the damaged Duke. I enjoyed this feel good story.
William had always known how his life would be. He was the third son of a Duke and a doctor, until life threw many obstacles his way. Resigned to the fact that he is now the Duke he is unprepared for what the future holds for him. Terribly disfigured from an explosion in the war William has come home to a fiancée that can’t look at him and has broken off the engagement. Augusta hasn’t been dealt the best life and after a severe beating by her father collapses as she is trying to run away when William finds her. Both are broken in different ways and both in need of healing. This was such a wonderful story to read. I enjoyed both characters and their journey. This is one book I definitely recommend!
Chapter one is painfully slow. I quit twice to dust and I hate dusting, Once chapter two began I read non-stop and finished quickly. Will a combat physician is horribly injured in battle while treating a injured soldier. He returned to England a Duke, only to have his betrothed wish to be free of the betrothal due to his disfigurement. Partially blind, horribly scarred, single and depressed he goes into seclusion. His aunt comes to stay but cannot bring him from his despair. He encounters a young woman badly beaten and takes her to his home to care for her injuries. With his aunt as a chaperone he cares for the unknown lady until she heals. During this time they come to care for each other.
William Ainsworth was the youngest of three sons, so the only responsibilities he had was to himself. He decided to study to be a doctor. He never expected that his brothers and both his parents would die, and leave him as the new Duke of Ravenswood. Now he has returned home from the war badly wounded and scarred forever. He has always been the quiet type, now he is reclusive. Augusta Copperweld is the abused daughter of the town drunk. Her one thought was to run before she is killed. She didn't get far. This is a sweet, emotional story of two damaged people learning to live again. Lovely characters and a little humour. An enjoyable read.
Duke Of Sorrow is a a phenomenal historical romance by Whitney Blake. Ms. Blake has provided readers with a well-written book populated with a stellar cast of characters. Will returns home after being injured in battle to be dumped by the woman he was to marry. Augusta fled from her father after a beating and was found by Will and his aunt. Augusta and Will's story is loaded with drama, humor, action and suspense. I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to reading more from Whitney Blake in the future. Duke Of Sorrow is book 2 of the Dukes of Destiny Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
The Duke of Ravencourt, Will Ainsworth, comes Home from war with a scarred face. He’s decided that he’s just too disfigured to go into public and hides from his tenants and walks into the village at night. Enter his beloved Aunt on a mission to get him back into society. They find a young woman severely beaten next to a brook and take her to his home to heal her wounds. She won’t tell them her name or where she’s from Aunt starts planning and the games begin. I enjoyed this story. The descriptions are so real I felt like i was there
This is a great book about William Percy Ainsworth, the Duke of Ravenwood, and Augusta Copperweld. Will was injured in the battle of Salamanca.he came home a bitter man with the injuries on his face. Will and his Aunt Jane found Augusta by the brook. She had a fever and had welts on her caused by someone hitting her with a crop. Will carries her home so he can attend to her injuries. Now the story needs to be read to find out what has happened.
Augusta suffered from an abusive father beaten nearly to death she tripped on a beach from her injuries! Will only went out at night literally stumbles across her! Will suffered from facial injuries he feels made him a monster! Half dead and No where else to go Will and his Aunt take her home. Will's doctor training kicks in and he nurses her and his own heart back to health!
This was an especially good read. The emotional ups and downs were poignant. My only problem with the book is that I find it highly unlikely back in his day for the Duke to fall in love with a commoner such as Augusta. However, that being said, he was what she needed and His Grave certainly needed Augusta so it was a win-win situation for literally everyone in the chounty. Well written, funny and saad. They needed each other. Well done!

Wonderful story and well written William became such a recluse after serving the the military and be coming injured but then he and his aunt Jane rescued Augusta on a night when they were walking and nursed her back to health after being abused by her father. Aunt Jane knew all along that William needed to return to the living and she knew that Augusta could bring love laughter and life back into William so glad they had they HEA would highly recomnend
William's tragedy is do true for the world today. Gussie's story unfortunately still happens today. This book made me think how many things have changed and how many haven't. It was a good read that could have been morose but it wasn't. It's a sweet story of finding your own.
No attempt to sync the setting, very modern language and characters. H is titled, a surgeon in Napoleonic war, now disfigured. The h is hurt, her father beats her, so a good start. But the H finds the h, she's hurt so takes her home, and yes her aunt is there to chaperone, but they treat her as a guest. She's a local girl, yet she knows just how to act as a lady. It seemed silly to me.
I enjoyed this sweet little story for the most part. I did find some scenes a bit confusing, especially when the characters would have memory flashbacks. Very difficult to follow. It's good. Characters are quite realistic and scenery is well described. With a bit of editing it could be much better.
Four stars, Augusta a commoner who was abused by her father..William a Duke was scarred from explosion in his face during the war.. Could they find love, him with his face and she from lowe class.. Fairy tale with a good ending.
