Matt Christopher is the writer young readers turn to when they're looking for fast-paced, action-packed sports novels. He is the best-selling author of more than one hundred sports books for young readers.

Matt Christopher is America's bestselling sports writer for children, with more than 100 books and sales approaching six million copies. In 1992, Matt Christopher talked about being a children's book author.

"I became interested in writing when I was 14, a freshman in high school. I was selling magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, and Liberty, and I would read the stories, particularly the adventure and mystery stories, and think how wonderful it would be to be able to write stories and make a living at it. I also read detective, horror, aviation, and sports stories and decided I would try writing them myself.

Determined to sell, I wrote a detective story a week for 40 weeks, finding the time to marry, work, and play baseball and basketball before I sold my first story in 1941, "The Missing Finger Points," for $50 to Detective Story magazine.

After writing and selling children's sports stories to magazines, I decided to write a baseball book for children. I was living in Syracuse, New York at the time, working at General Electric. I spoke about my idea to the branch librarian. She was immediately interested and told me that they needed sports stories badly. So I came up with my first children's book, The Lucky Baseball Bat. I submitted it to Little, Brown, and the book was published in 1954.

I'm sure that playing sandlot baseball and then semiprofessional baseball with a Class C club in the Canadian-American League influenced my writing. I had my own personal experiences, and I saw how other players reacted to plays, to teammates' and fans' remarks and innuendoes, to managers' orders, etc. All these had a great influence on my writing. My love of the game helped a lot, too, of course.

Out of all the books I've written, my favorite is The Kid Who Only Hit Homers. It's a fantasy, but the main character in it could be real. There are a lot of boys who would love to play baseball but, for some reason, cannot. The only difference between a real-life boy and Sylvester Coddmyer III is the appearance of a character named George Baruth, whom only Sylvester can see and who helps Sylvester become a good ballplayer.

I've written many short stories and books for both children and adults, and find that writing for children is really my niche. Being the eldest of nine children (seven boys and two girls), I've lived through a lot of problems many children live through, and I find these problems excellent examples to include in my books.

Sports have made it possible for me to meet many people with all sorts of life stories, on and off the field, and these are grist for this writer's mill. I'm far beyond playing age now, but I manage to go to both kids' and adult games just to keep up with them, and keep them fresh in my mind.Very few things make me happier than receiving fan letters from boys and girls who write that they had never cared for reading until they started to read my books. That is just about the ultimate in writing for children. I would never trade it for another profession."

Matt Christopher died on September 27, 1997. His legacy is now being carried on by his sons, Duane and Dale Christopher.

Personal Responds
I found this book to be exciting, informative, and it refreshed my memory of many important football games. The importance of the Manning’s family is evident in the NFL history. I was reminded of three great quarterbacks: Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning. Each of their stories was told in this book. I enjoyed following their football careers through high school, college, and the NFL. Archie is the father of Peyton and Eli Manning.

Plot
This biography tells of the struggles, hard work, and success of two outstanding quarterbacks. Their father Archie Manning, also a successful quarterback, was very influential on his two sons, Peyton and Eli. Their quarterback positions came easily in high school but not in college. Peyton struggled in college by throwing many interceptions, but his numbers improved with time. Peyton’s effort showed in his outstanding statistics: Super Bowl victory, Pro Bowl selections, and MVP awards. Peyton became a great leader of his NFL team.
Eli also was chosen in the first round of the NFL draft like his brother, Peyton. At Ole Miss, Eli red-shirted his first year. His second year he was a backup quarterback until he was called into play to replace a senior quarterback, Romaro Miller, in the fourth quarter. Eli threw three touchdowns in six and ½ minutes. After that, Eli was starting quarterback for Ole Miss. Eli was very successful in his next years as leader of the team as their quarterback. Eli broke 47 school records including 81 touchdown passes.
Eli was selected by San Diego Chargers but an hour later was traded to the New York Giants. The New York Giants kept improving, and in 2008 they were Super Bowl Champions. Eli was named MVP just like Peyton the year before. The Manning family has been described as the most dynamic family in football.

Characters
The Manning brothers were always competitive but always supported each other. Both Peyton and Eli were each successful in their high school career. Eli showed little emotion when he plays football. He was serious, thinking about the next play, and remained calm even in a crisis. Eli played at Ole Miss and their mascot is the Rebels. Peyton played for the Tennessee Volunteers. Peyton was emotional when he played and has become a fan favorite. The three brothers are- Peyton, Cooper, and Eli. Copper was the oldest, then Peyton and youngest is Eli.
Copper had a successful career playing high school football, but when he got to college he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis which ended his sports career. He remained Peyton and Eli’s biggest fan.

Impacts of Setting
The Manning family lived in Drew, Mississippi where Peyton, Eli, and Cooper played many sports very well. For Eli and Copper, they went to college at Ole Miss, while Peyton went to the University of Tennessee. For Peyton and Eli, the setting mostly took place at a variety of NFL football stadiums. The New York Giants home field is called Metlife stadium. Peyton’s Manning home field for the Indianapolis Colts is called Lucas Oil Stadium. The setting in this book was all dictated by their profession.

Recommendation
I would recommend this book to all die-hard football fans and also, anyone wanting to know more information on the Manning brothers. The reader should be 12 years old or older and have an intense interested in play by play description of football actions. Male or female football fans would enjoy this book.I gave this book a five-star rating, because I like reading about NFL history. I particularly enjoy reading the play by play sections of the book.

Personal Response
This was a quick easy to read book. I liked how it started off talking about the dad and then talked about how the kids grew in a family of football. Each one took a different road to get to the NFL, while one brother fell short of his dream. Eli and Peyton both had big shoes to fill. Luckily for Eli, he had his younger brother to prepare him for the big games. Eli and Cooper played on the same high school team, Eli then had a top receiver he could rely on.

Plot
There were three quarterbacks in the Manning family along with one wide receiver. Archie Manning was an outstanding high school quarterback going on to play football at Ole Miss University. He excelled there too. He then went on to play for the Saints in the NFL. His oldest son, Peyton, was the next one in the family to excel in football. Many expected him to follow in his dad's footsteps. They expected him to go to Ole Miss, but he decided to go to Tennessee instead. He went on to have an amazing NFL career with the Colts then finishing out his career with the Denver Broncos. Eli on the other hand followed directly in his dad's footsteps attending Ole Miss University. He was then selected in the NFL draft by the New York Giants. He is, currently, the starting QB for them. Cooper had a rough road, though, watching everyone else in his family go on to play college football. His dream was smashed when the doctor told him he had a rare disease and had to quit playing football.

Characterization
Peyton is a very calm person in my opinion. He does not really show much emotion on and off the field. He is quiet when he is away from football, staying out of trouble. Peyton is a great role model for kids to look up too, he sets the example for the kind of teammate a player would want. He is always respectful to his coaches, teammates and officials. He is a leader, coaching the young players along the way. Eli acts the same way Peyton does. He tries to avoid the media as much as possible. Today it is not the easiest to do that, because everywhere celebrities go they are being watched. Eli is an all around good person who tries to always make the best decision for him and others he is associated with.

Impact Of Setting
The Manning brothers grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. They were all born around the 1980's. Football back when Archie played was not as big as it is now. People were still learning about the game. Things have changed, though, since Eli and Peyton starting playing. The NFL is becoming more strict with players, even changing many of the rules of the game.

Audience/Recommendation
This would be a great read for any high school football player looking to be the best teammate they possibly could be. It shows how to act on and off a field. The Manning's are great people that others should look up to.

Personal Response:
I really enjoyed reading this book. I am a huge football fan and really like Peyton. Eli was a lot better when he was younger but has recently taken a turn for the worse. I also really enjoy reading about their early years in middle and high school. I find some of their younger years to be very interesting.

Plot:
The book starts out with Peyton and Eli's dad, Archie. The author goes through his pro career in the NFL in decent detail. Archie spent his whole career in New Orleans as a Saint. Then the book turns to Peyton and his career during high school and college as a volunteer. Peyton was drafted in the first round to the Indianapolis Colts. He helps the struggling team to a Super Bowl win in his eighth season. Eli is up next and decides to go to his father's school as a Razorback. Eli came close but was never was able to win a championship in his college career. Eli was drafted in the first round to the New York Giants.

Characterization:
The main characters are only the three people of the Manning family, Peyton, Eli and his dad Archie. Peyton is a very determined and loud person that likes to win and hates setbacks. Peyton is also very competitive and in the end usually wins. Eli is very similar but very quiet and more easy going. Eli does not like losing either but is much less emotional about a loss. He also takes it with a chip on his shoulder to improve upon.

Impacts of Setting:
The setting is mostly on a football field. Different fields all over the country but always on a field. Ranging from the early 1970's to present day.

Thematic connection:
The biggest theme in this book is perseverance. These players never gave up and in the end they both won a Superbowl. The teams they were drafted to were horrid teams. They stuck it out and in the end they achieve the highest award in the NFL.

Recommendation
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys football. Most likely boys or men in middle or high school. There are some girls that may like this story too. If you like football you would enjoy it. I give it a four star rating.

Personal Response:
I am a big time football fan and I loved this book. Reading a biography of some of the all time great quarterbacks was just awesome. I learned a lot of information about their younger years, and it was really interesting.

Plot:
The book started out explaining Archie Manning’s football career. Archie was Peyton and Eli’s dad. He played his entire career in New Orleans for the Saints. Peyton was a high school stand out and played just as good in college. He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the NFL draft. Peyton won a Superbowl eight years into his career. Eli, quietly, had a great high school and college football career. He was overshadowed by Peyton's success, so not many people paid attention to him. Eli was selected as a first round pick by the New York Giants. Eli went wet on to win a Super Bowl against the undefeated New England Patriots.

Characterization:
The main characters were Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. Peyton was a very outgoing person and liked to speak his mind. He was also very competitive and didn't accept anything less than a win. Eli was the quiet one. He kept to himself and let his game do the talking. Eli handled pressure like no one else and always made the clutch play.

Setting:
The setting took place on many football fields around the United States. Starting in the 1970’s from Archie’s era, to present day Peyton and Eli’s era. Peyton and Eli are both current quarterbacks who have changed the NFL.

Thematic Connection:
The theme of this book was to never give up. All of the Manning's had to fight through tough times with their teams. They all fought through low times and came up big when it mattered. For example, Peyton was down 21 at half against the Ravens, and they ended up rallying back and winning. In the end, Peyton and Eli both have won a Superbowl.

Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys football. This book fits guys or girls who are in middle or high school. I rate this book five stars.

The Mannings are definitely my favorite sports family! Because of this, I felt intrigued to learn more about the heroic family, and read "On the field with... Peyton and Eli Manning" by Matt Christopher. One thing that impressed me was how detailed the book was when talking about games and plays. Christopher even tells you exact yardage on plays from over 10 years ago! FORESHADOWING: Christopher uses this author craft a lot when talking about the big moments in the all star's career's. One example of foreshadowing is when he says that Peyton would be watching the next Super Bowl cheering on a Manning other than himself. He does the flashback after Peyton wins his first Super Bowl (Christopher 68). This book has made an impact on me by making me dream as big as I want because if you put in the hard work, anything is possible.

Personal Response:
I liked this book, because it was about some of the best quarterbacks around. It also talked a lot about how they led their team to win superbowls and turned their teams around. It also showed their stats and awards that they have won, and it showed all of the records that they have set. These star quarterbacks started at day one with their father, Archie Manning.

Plot:
This book is about how Archie Manning and his two sons, Peyton and Eli, made their careers of football. It started back in high school, and all three of them were quarterbacks. Peyton and Eli didn’t really play their freshman year in high school, but for their sophomore year they both started and lit up the field. Payton went through school a few years earlier, and they set tons of records there. Then came along Eli,and if he wasn’t breaking his records, he was very close. Archie went to Ole Miss for college and set records, and Eli came and beat all of his records.Peyton went to University of Tennessee and shattered records.

Characterization:
Peyton Manning was the second child in the Manning family. He was a great quarterback and leader. Everyone looked up to him, and he didn’t have many people dislike him. However, many people were jealous of him, because he was so talented. Eli Manning was the third and final child in the Manning family. He was about as good as Peyton, but both had some things they did better than the other. They both went to the same high school and did great. Then they went to different colleges and did amazing there. Both were then early picks in the NFL draft, and they did even better at the professional level.

Setting:
This book doesn’t have a specific setting. Isidore Newman High School is where it started out for both Eli and Peyton Manning. For Peyton, the setting changed to Tennessee University and then Indianapolis to play for the Colts. Eli’s setting was Ole Miss University and then New York. This was important to the story, because it showed where they were living when they were playing on each different team.

Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to middle school or high school boys, because it is simple book. It was a very interesting book to read at the reading level. Also, the reason I recommended it to boys was because usually guys tend to like football more than women do.

Personal Response: This book was a very fast and fun read. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't stop reading. Matt Christopher did a great job mending Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning's stories together into an action packed book. I plan to read more Matt Christopher books in the future.

Plot: Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning were the NFL's quarterback dynasty. Each of them were great players and each of them won the ultimate title, Super Bowl champs. Archie is the father of Peyton and Eli Manning. He was a legend in the world of football back in the day. He played on a level that no one else was at. Archie was the inspiration to his two sons who watched him in the stands when he dominated on the field. Next, it was Peyton's time to shine. Peyton grew up with a very competitive attitude. He always wanted to learn more and do what he could do to get better. Peyton had a very hard work ethic. Not only did he dominate on the field while he was in school, but he also dominated in the classroom. He was always an academic student who always wanted to learn more. He was determined to make it to the NFL. His grades and football skills were enough to earn himself a first round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts. He went on to play many record breaking seasons that would carve him out a spot in the Manning dynasty and a Super Bowl ring. When Peyton was playing in college and then the NFL, his little brother Eli was watching his every move. He learned to play as good, if not better than Peyton by challenging him in everything they did together. Eli was a rising star in his high school career. He was also a whiz in the classroom, while dominating on the field. He played on a level above everyone he played against. He was a star in college and was a hot topic in the 2004 NFL draft. The San Diego Chargers had the first round pick. He had begged the San Diego Chargers to not draft him, because didn't want to be on a team with no potential. He was drafted by the Chargers, but was traded right to the New York Giants. Eli went on to play very well in the NFL. He won himself a spot in the Manning dynasty along with his father and brother. He also scored himself a Super Bowl ring. The Manning quarterback dynasty is a legendary trio that will never be forgotten in the NFL.

Characterization: Archie Manning was a hard working man back in the day. He always played on a level above everyone else. Archie set a new standard in the NFL that will later be matched by his sons. Peyton Manning was also a very hard worker and always wanted to know more. He was skilled academically and physically. Eli Manning was the last edition to the Manning Dynasty. Eli, along with his brother and father, was also a hard worker. He was skilled in the same ways as his brother. He was a smart and quiet young man who never quit. He also always wanted to know more. The trio all shared the same great qualities that made them legendary quarterbacks.

Impacts of setting: There were many different settings in this book. Archie Manning lived in New Orleans, Louisiana. He raised his family there, but also traveled around the nation playing football. He went to Ole Miss for college, which was in Mississippi. Archie had always been on the road but when he was at home, he loved life the most. Archie's son, Peyton Manning, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He took a different path than his father and went to Tennessee University. He then played in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts. He traveled all around the nation playing football just like his father. Archie's youngest son, Eli, took in his footsteps by accepting a scholarship to Ole Miss where he broke many of his father's records. Eli went to play for the New York Giants in the NFL. He followed Peyton and Archie's footsteps and traveled around the nation playing the sport they all loved.

Audience/Recommendation: I would recommend this book to any sports enthusiast who likes an action packed book with many statistics. I think any guy over ten would like this book more than a girl because, they tend to like the sport of football more than girls do. I think it is a great read for anyone who is into sports. If you like an action packed book that will keep your attention until the end, then this book is for you!

i read about Eli and Payton Manning and about their NFL careers. The book begins by talking about their father, and how he was put out of a college. Then he was scouted to play at Tennessee. He was hurt too many times playing football, and he was a second string quarter back. When the other quarter back went down, Archie Manning was made first string. He was a good backup quarterback, which let him be a starter.

The book compared Peyton and Eli, and said they took their father's road and got good at being quarterbacks. They decided to be the best. Peyton Manning doesn't pick up the phone when he throws, and Eli doesn't either, he puts it all the way down and then picks it up. Peyton rushes to get the ball out of his hands, and Eli stands behind the line.

I like this book because it gives a lot of details about both of them that I didn't already know before. It helps me in my personal life to get skills to being a quarterback when I get older. I would recommend this book to quarterbacks my age (which is 11-13) who play in leagues because it can help them right now and when they get older.

I liked this book. It included experiences from every point of view for Peyton, Eli, and Archie. It includes in the book where each one goes to college and where each one went to the NFL at. I had no clue that Archie actually went to the team I liked. The New Orleans Saints. Also, it told us how Peyton led the Colts to a super bowl.
This book was about the Mannings growing up and how they had to deal with everything in there life. It also was about how much of a role model Archie was to his kids and what he did to make them like football so much. It ALL came natural to the boys and you can tell.
One thing I didn't like about this book was how in the first chapter, it talked about how there grandfather committed suicide right away. Other then that I recommend this book to 12-14 year olds.

This book was about the life of Peyton and Eli Manning, but this book was also about their father Archie. This story showed the road Eli and Peyton took to get to the NFL and the book even compared the two future hall of fame quarterbacks. This book showed all their accomplishments so far in the NFL and it showed the college life, and even high school.

My opinion on this book was that it was a great read for me, I really enjoy football and love the game. The whole expierience of getting to the NFL is my favorite part because it shows me what I have to do to get there. I recommend this book to anyone who likes football, anyone who likes brotherly competition, and anyone who wants some hints on how to be successful.
