This is the first novel in the Fate of the Thaumatophane trilogy (pronounced TOW/MAY/TOW/FAIN or TOW/MAY/TOW/FAN). The Thaumatophane was a magical machine sought after by the alchemists of the Middle Ages, an all-powerful invention that not only turned lead into gold but gave omnipotence to its possessor. In this first in the trilogy, two teenagers, Jake and Helen, meet by chance at a literary festival in Florence, Italy, where the contestants have to recite passages written by Dante, the Italian renaissance poet. They soon become fast friends: Helen, daughter of a failed marriage between a somewhat seedy Irish art dealer and a Swiss heiress has been raised by her aunts in the chill and reserved world of Swiss chateaux and private schools. A loner, wary of opening herself to others, she longs for her London-based dad to pay more attention to her. Jake, from a rowdy Scottish-Italian Glasgow family, is a happy-go-lucky jack-in-the-box kind of guy, not a great intellectual but with a good solid head on his pragmatic shoulders. Together, they make a fine pair.
Very quickly they fall into a world of practitioners of black magic and the occult arts, for Helen's father has borrowed a 16th-century painting called "The Secret of the Alchemist" from her aunts' private collection and thinks he can hold his buyer up for a higher price by pretending to lose it for a few weeks. He meanwhile smuggles it out of Switzerland and secretes it in Venice, leaving the key for his daughter to find in an ornate desk he ships to Florence for repairs.
The alchemist of the painting is Ruggiero de Montefeltro, an Englishman who went to Italy in the 16th century and began to learn the secrets of the occult at the hands of a magician in order to lay his hands on the Thaumatophane. His own fate is left unclear until the apocalyptic finish to this riveting novel, which takes place in an ancient house in Provence where the very Gates of Hell are opened.

Simyacının Sırrı |3/5|
Merak ediyorum acaba bu kitap güncel bir tarihte çıksaydı, kitabı Paulo Coelho’nun yazmış olduğu Simyacı ile karıştıran çıkar mıydı? Kitapla alakalı böyle şeyleri merak ediyorum, evet, çünkü kitap ile alakalı merak edilecek pek bir şey yok.
Bir serinin ilk kitabı olmasına rağmen devam kitapları çevrilmemiş. Her ne kadar ayıla bayıla okumamış olduğum bir kitap olsa da devam kitaplarının da çevrilmiş olduğunu görmek isterdim. Halbuki tutmayacak bir kitap da değil. Nedeninin yayınevi olduğunu düşünüyorum. Başka bir yayınevi kitabı basmış olsaydı devam kitaplarını görebilirdik, bence.
Kitabımız, bir genç-yetişkin macera kitabı. Ana karakterlerimiz Jake ve Helen’in, Helen’in babasının ona teslim ettiği bir eşya dolayısıyla çıktıkları macerayı okuyoruz. Büyülerin ve simyacıların içerisinde olduğu karanlık bir dünyada, genç karakterlerimiz, simyacının sırrını hikayemizin kötü adamından önce çözmeye çalışıyor.
Kitapla alakalı sevmediğim şey kurgusu oldu. Karakterlerimizin başardığı pek bir şey yok ve kitap iki yüz sayfadan fazla olmasına rağmen pek fazla olayın gerçekleşmediğini de söyleyebilirim. Okuduktan sonra bile kitabın nasıl iki yüz sayfadan fazla tutmuş olduğunu anlayamadım. Onun haricinde, karakterlerin hepsi, bir numarası olmayan, bu tarz kitaplarda olması gerektiği gibi olan karakterler.
Kitapla alakalı güzel şey, çevirisiydi. Her ne kadar kitabın düzenleme aşamasında bazı kelimeler unutulmuş ve bazı kelimelerin de son heceleri unutulmuş olsa da çeviri olarak güzeldi, akıcıydı ve anlaşılırdı. Fantastiklik derecesi olarak da, ismi Simyacının Sırrı olan bir kitaba göre az derecede fantastiklik vardı ama belki devam kitaplarında bu durum değişiyordur, bilmiyorum. Devamını okuyamayacağım.
Farklı şartlarda, farklı bir yayınevi ile vesaire yayınlansa aslında bu kitap daha çok satıp tanınabilirmiş. Gerçi yurt dışında da fazla ilgi görmemiş sanırım, Goodreads’in yalancısıyım ben.
Tavsiye edeceğim bir kitap değil ne yazık ki, şu anda arayıp bulmaya değmez.

El secreto del alquimista.Es un libro de suspenso y misterio. Sus protagonistas son unos adolescentes, quienes por azares del destino se conocen en un concurso de declamación, y cuando se dan cuenta ya forman parte de la búsqueda de un secreto. Perseguidos por un alquimista malvado deberán viajar para poder hallar el misterio que envuelve la desaparición del padre de la chica y la relación de éste con una pintura , titulada precisamente, "el secreto del alquimista". El libro tiene una segunda parte, pero no lo he hallado.

Really enjoyed the art theft storyline, the chase, the crisp, descriptive writing all at a goodly pace after a long slow buildup. It didn’t feel like a young adult readers book though, lots to take in and process.

Me obsequiaron este libro en mi adolescencia. ¿Me gustó? Sí. La aventura de los protagonistas es muy emocionante, llena de adrenalina.

This is a beautifully written book.
Apart from a brief hint of time travel that is more probably a magical re-representation of the current world by either the evil Aurelian Pounce or by Dante (who makes a cameo appearance as protector), the book is set firmly in the 21st century. However it deals with quite ancient themes, mostly medieval black magical ones, though Ulysses makes a fragmentary appearance as part of Dante’s poem.
The characters are lively and well-drawn. Jake and Helen get off to a bitchy and amusing start, and Helen’s relationship with her self-centred and unreliable father is very touching as well as funny.
The intellectual level aims the book at bright mid-to-late teenagers, while the magic ties it into a general readership tuned to this overall genre.

Another reviewer claimed this story is a "DaVinci Code" wannabe. I do think it is like Dan Brown for Juveniles, however, saying it is a "wannabe" is a bit harsh. Especially considering Dan Brown is a Umberto Eco wannabe.
It was nice that they didn't call a Philosopher's Stone a Sorcerer's Stone (J. K. Rowling), or claim speculation as fact (Dan Brown). I enjoyed the story, but was a little disappointed with the ending and felt it could've been longer.

You need your wits about you for this one. This maybe a young adult book, but I found the concepts in it a little older--so, age 14yo and up.

Las primeras páginas fueron algo cansadas de leer, después se pone mejor la historia, creo que se pudieron ahorrar algunas cosas y ponerle más atención a otros detalles más importantes de la trama, aún así habrá que ver como sigue el siguiente libro.

The story drags on and didnt have the best ending but overall, its a nice mystery to read.
